How To Write An Email To A Professor For Graduate School Admission? - Thesis Help

07:41
In this video, I describe how to write an email to professor for graduate school admission. This video is useful if you are looking for things to write in an email to supervisor for master thesis or have difficultly knowing what to writing in an email to a potential PhD advisor. First, you should consider what you should look for in a potential phd supervisor? Do you want a younger professor or more established professor? Do you want a professor at key schools? Basically, you are looking for characteristics of a good supervisor that fit with yourself. You should always focus on research. Professors will not care about other areas of your life, unless you are highly accomplished. You should be polite and respectful. Professors do not have much time. Further, consider emailing the school first, rather than directly to the professor. A direct email to your professor will only work if you know the professor. Even still, they are unlikely to respond quickly. One last tip to about how to write an email to a professor for graduate school admission? Don’t ask for anything, especially money, resources, or time. Only focus on what you can be of service to the person. Asking for money will not get you anywhere. You have to focus on what you can add value to the professor. PhD Interview: What Does An Interview Mean For A PhD / Doctorate (In Business)?

09:14
When you get a PhD interview, what does it mean about you as a candidate? Generally, it means that the school is quite interested in you. You have passed through several hurdles, which schools use to screen out applications. For example, you made it through screening based on sheer numbers, you were letters of recommendation, and based on your statement of interest. What are potential advisors looking for in the interview? At this moment, they are looking to see if you would be OK to work with for several years. They are looking to see if you have thoughts on your own, and are capable of being a good colleague. Most importantly, they are looking to see that you’re not going to disappear during the PhD program. That is, they’re looking to see whether you actually are serious about doing a PhD in business or related area. Why do they have PhD interviews? PhD interviews are necessary because the applicant can often seem a little bit more different on paper than they are in person. What are stages of PhD interviews? There can be multiple points for PhD interviews. There might be an initial Skype screening with one person, then there will be a group Skype interview, and then eventually a campus interview with multiple people. How should you act during your PhD interviews? You should try to dress and act for the occasion. The best thing that you can do is dress formally, but then enjoy the process. If you can feel engaged, than that is probably a good sign during the PhD interview. 2 Masters Degrees Vs PhD: Is It Easier To Find A Job With Masters / MBA Than With A PhD?

07:53
The short answer is ‘yes,’ it is easy to get a job with a Masters / MBA than with a PhD. How can that be? You have to think about the supply and demand of a PhD degree. A PhD degree is a relatively specialized degree, and there are only limited number of spots where you can find a job that fits this skill set. Most people believe that it is the candidate that is unwilling to take lower positions, but I really do not think this is the case. While you do gain a lot of specialized knowledge from the PhD that far exceeds what you would gain in a masters degree, most people do not understand what a PhD is and thus, it reduces the number of industry opportunities for you. It is more that the PhD screens you out of opportunities. I have had a family member that is a recruiter tell me that I would have better success if I removed the PhD from my resume. That is crazy, but it is a matter of people having a ‘bin’ for you, and if you do not fit that ‘bin’ than they will quickly find another candidate to fit that classification. This is why it is very common for PhDs to move great distances to obtain jobs, or even take considerable pay-cuts for their comparable skillset. It is extremely common for MBAs at business schools to make more than their professors. This is called salary inversion. Then, why do people choose to do a PhD? The answer is that you are pursuing something that you love that people are willing to take a pay cut for this luxury. Further, in the long-run, you also possibly have great opportunities if you keep pursuing your dream. *************** Check out: The Biggest Lesson Learned For A PhD https://youtu.be/fcd3M1T826Q Imposter Syndrome in Academia: How Did You Deal With Self Doubts With A PhD? https://youtu.be/FtCGTEuDoWo Why Do Dual PhDs, Joint PhDs, MBA/PhDs, JD/PhDs, And PhDs With Other Programs? https://youtu.be/HQpQ-JnpoRk Negotiating Doctorate / PhD Stipends in Business Administration Programs https://youtu.be/aZr91cUOwv0 PhD Options After An MBA With No Recognition https://youtu.be/Hjbvjp-P2k8 Dr. vs Professor: What Do You Call Someone With a PhD? https://youtu.be/F7z4HgMQQSs PhD Interview: What Does An Interview Mean For A PhD / Doctorate (In Business)? https://youtu.be/E8f8_DulTrQ Should You Start A Doctorate / PhD In Business To Change Careers? https://youtu.be/sHZ4ozp2Ovs Do You Need Management Experience To Do A PhD Or Doctorate In Business Administration? https://youtu.be/5N8VcKHGKqM Do PhD Scholarships Matter For Acceptance In PhD Programs? https://youtu.be/r2AiegscD58 Overcoming PhD Challenges: Solutions To Common PhD Challenges https://youtu.be/BJNEJVKS9ik Masters / MBA / PhD Student Debt: How To Make It Through Grad School In Business With Little Debt https://youtu.be/NmLgyWTFBtU 7 Tips For Meeting With A PhD Advisor https://youtu.be/O4XuS8x2EIs Postdocs In Business Administration: How To Find A Postdoc Positions and Postdoc Jobs? https://youtu.be/0fhMeT4Fl4Q Graduate School Teaching: Tips On Being A Graduate Student Instructor https://youtu.be/TcYSdEIbsG8 Doctor Of Business Administration (DBA) And PhD in Business Administration Program Cost https://youtu.be/9JD-PMqRusU How Long Does It Take To Become A Full Professor? PhD Student Depression & Anxiety: Dealing With Mental Health Issues During Your PhD

11:58
If you are having suicidal thoughts or would like to harm yourself or others, please immediately call the National Suicide Prevention Hotline 1-800-273-8255 or seek help immediately. While my experiences are mainly attributable to people that are doing a PhD in Business Administration, depression and anxiety happens to many PhD students,  no matter the program that you choose. One of the toughest things to deal with during your PhD is a feeling of low self-worth, and dealing with PhD Student Depression and Anxiety.  This is quite common and I think it is the largest reason why people quit their PhD.  Why do you have this feeling of low self-worth? Realistically, you're at the lowest end of the academic status ladder and  you're constantly being corrected on your ideas. additionally, you are stuck in your own head most of the day. Many of your negative feelings come from ruminating over these ideas and having wandering thoughts. How can you deal with these feelings of depression and anxiety during your Ph.D program? 1. Know that your PhD academic career is not the only thing that you're good at.  Try to get out and get extra curricular activities that involves non-academics or people that you can trust.  This interaction with non-academics or PhDs that you don't compete with will give you a reprieve. 2. Get some exercise. As soon as you start feeling negative emotions stop what you're doing and go get some exercise. It almost always makes you feel better. 3. Try to help other people. Oddly enough, helping other people often makes you feel better because you realize you're not the only person that is having negative feelings. 4. Try to find a more  supportive research team.  one of the reasons why you often feel negative during your Ph.D program is how other people are interpreting your ideas. Try to find a group of people that build on your work rather than tear it down. 5. The last resort is to know that you can always pursue a different career. You are  never stuck. You can always quit and nobody is going to really care that you quit. This is your life and you get to direct your own life during your doctorate. PhD Transfer: Leaving A PhD Program For Another PhD Program

11:54
Transferring PhD programs is common but few people openly talk about changing PhD programs. There are several reasons why people change or transfer PhD programs: 1. PhD candidates learnt about what they like to do. 2. PhD students did not get a long with some aspect of their current program. 3. PhD students did not perform well with their current program, and switch to other programs. The problem that you have when you switch PhD programs is to communicate that you are doing so to the outside world because of point one. Outside audiences might infer that you are some how difficult to get along with or that you are not good enough for their program. The key is to come up with an excellent rationale to show others that you are interested in the new program. Read up on the program, and try to craft a paper that fits the interests of the new program. Your goal is to communicate that the new area fits what you are interested in. Some other tips: 1. Switch to the new program sooner rather than later. If you do not like the material that you are learning, it does not get better. 2. Try to not communicate the switch is due to the difficultly of the program or due to your distaste for the material. All PhD programs are difficult. They are meant to be. Avoid switching because of the difficultly - it is not going to be easier in their other area. 3. Look at the long-run. Most roles change with time in any field. What are the people in your field doing 10 years from now? Is this something that you want to be doing? 4. Build your own PhD program. If the ideal program does not exist, build it yourself. Nothing stops you from exploring in graduate school, or doing visiting positions at other schools. 5. The current program is likely going to persuade you from leaving the program - they have invested in you and want to see that you are going to make their program look good. Tips For Freelance Proofreading: Creating Your Own Proofreading Business

07:31
I discuss several tips for freelance proofreading and how to get into editing and proofreading. Specifically, this is focused on the business of proofreading, how to set up proofreading business, and creating your own proofreading business. The video is helpful for those who want to learn how to become a freelance editor proofreader. Those that are starting a proofreading freelance business are most likely going to benefit from these tips. 1. Do Not Be Afraid To Give Proofreading Away For Free. One thing that you will realize is that you have to give much away for free to create a business. Creating a freelance proofreading business is similar. You have to give away samples in order for people to see that your services are justified. 2. Focus On Being Of Service. The key to building a freelance proofreading business, as with any business, is to focus on being of service to the client. Figure out what the client needs and try to solve their problems before they ask. 3. Create Checklists For Your Proofreading Business. To increase your ability at freelance proofreading, I would suggest that you start to systemize your freelance proofreading. Keep focusing on making systems and checklists to make your life easier with proofreading. 4. Know That A Freelance Proofreading Business Is Going To Take A Long Time. Bet that building your proofreading business will take a lot longer than you thought it would. Every business takes a long time to build, unless you are quite lucky. 5. Start With Small Projects. I would start with small proofreading projects first, and then move to larger projects like novel editing, dissertation editing, or scientific editing. You should build to get to these larger projects. Doctor Of Business Administration vs. PhD In Business Administration: Differences? - Thesis Help

17:03
What is the difference between a Doctor In Business Administration versus a PhD in Business administration? What are the similarities between a DBA and a PhD in Business? Both of them leave you with a doctorate and a very good understanding of business. Both will require at least 3 to 4 years of dedicated schooling. Both will require a GMAT and as well as a MBA in an appropriate subdomain, like an MBA in finance or MBA in strategy. But there are important differences in the outcomes: 1. A PhD will teach you to do research. A PhD in business is primarily a research degree, which is required to teach and become a professor in most top business schools. A doctor of business administration (DBA) can allow you to teach in a research school, however you are unlikely to be tenure-tracked. A DBA will also be much more focused on executive education and allow you to do work in industry. 2. A PhD is likely to take longer and be more uncertain than a DBA. A DBA is primarily coursework-based and the project is significantly less research focused. Thus, a PhD in business administration is likely to take longer than a DBA. 3. A PhD program will require you to move. There are online DBA programs that can allow you to work while pursuing this degree. 4. The outcomes of a PhD take longer to achieve. Generally, if you pursue their PhD in business administration route you are likely going to become a researcher and consequently this is going to take a lot longer to establish your career. A DBA is much quicker and is usually preferable for those that are interested in going into consulting or advancing their executive career. 5. A PhD in Business Administration is more competitive. Getting a PhD in Business Administration is likely to be a lot more competitive than a DBA. You Can Finish Your PhD! Motivation To Keep Going With Your Doctorate.

10:34
If you are early on in your doctorate, and you’re having second thoughts, this is absolutely normal. However, if these second thoughts are giving you a strong message to quit, you really should. If you are working on your PhD or your doctorate, I just want to point out that you really can get this done. Doing any particular task is really quite simple if you start breaking it down. Imagine yourself as climbing a mountain. What do people do to climb the mountain? They take one small step at a time. I want you to do the analogous thing: Disregard all of the stuff around you. Just write 1 sentence on your doctorate dissertation. Every day, just try to write one sentence at a time. Keep one hour of your time to writing. Just keep going with your doctorate. The prospects are really quite bright if you do, or do not do your PhD. 1. You have a valuable skills that others do not possess. 2. You are creative and curious. 3. You are have determination. ****************** Check out: What Are The 3 Of The Hardest Parts Of Research During A PhD In Business Administration https://youtu.be/g-Rjsq5ff8A Emotions Of Starting An Online New Venture, New Idea, Or Doing Something Difficult https://youtu.be/znaOeKLwl58 Startup Anxieties: Anxious When You Are Not Working On A New Idea https://youtu.be/nFw0Yq2Al4Q How To Be A Better Person https://youtu.be/waemVbvk83s Why Are Performance Appraisals So Difficult To Do? Tips To Write A Statement Of Purpose For A PhD Program That Actually Work

There are many things to think about when you write a PhD statement of purpose, and you will have many good resources on the internet to find a basic statement of purpose. However, I think there's a lot of different things that you can do much differently to improve your chances with your statement of purpose. Focus on the research of the place that you are applying to. You should read some of the researchers’ articles, and talk about how you found those articles interesting. You might even point out how you can build on these papers. Focus on your skill sets that can help improve their research productivity. If you are good at databases, then point out how you can assemble databases for them. Try to point out relationships that you already have, or that you have ongoing relationships with somebody at that Institution. Applying to PhD positions, like jobs, is very relational. Focus on being as helpful as you possibly can and try to remove your ego from the equation. Very few people really care that you were a CEO of a company or something along those lines. What they care about is whether their performance improves. Don't be afraid to be sincere and point out some of your weaknesses and how you might actually either improve these weaknesses, or specialize in a specific area. ***************** Check out: Doing A Doctorate In Entrepreneurship: Can You Research, & Teach Entrepreneurship In The Classroom? https://youtu.be/hb4jm-hDDOQ Leaving A Six Figure ($100k-500k) Income To Pursue A PhD in Business Administration? https://youtu.be/mctYMjwKvuM What Is Better A MS in Information Technology or A PhD in Business Administration? https://youtu.be/UjUZektziDk Tips About PhD Research Seminars https://youtu.be/f1wkJzb34bE Doing A PhD Forces You To Be Open And Honest With Who You Are https://youtu.be/FA1D0a3nkx0 MBA or Masters? What Are Some Research Paper Topics? 10 Good Research Topics To Explore - Monday Writes

08:54
What are some research paper topics that you can choose to explore? There are many examples of good research topics that might be useful to anyone that is interested in science and technology. There is still much to know in most areas, and many of these established research areas are quite controversial and provide good research report topics, once you start looking into them. The key is finding research paper topics that matter to you as a person. There are so many examples of research topics that you are likely to care about: 1. Identify research paper topics that you find unusual in your day-to-day life. What makes you stop and say, “That’s strange, why does that happen?” These topics can be focused on anything around you. 2. Look into certain paper topics by changing the level of analysis. This can be useful for those that are interested in technology research topics because technology occurs at many levels. The level of analysis is the way in which you look at something. If most papers are focused on its chemistry, think in terms of its biology. This little technique will help you see many new insights. 3. Identify research paper topics by asking friends and family. Ask your friends and family what they would research if they were you. What curious thing is going to make them excited that you are doing research on that topic? This might involve getting out and talking to people. 4. Focus on a research topic that many people have investigated, but use a different theoretical lens. If many people have focused on transaction cost economics, maybe look at the same phenomenon using an organizational perspective. 5. Try to identify something that is impossible, and try to explain what conditions might make it possible. For example, what if gravity worked in the opposite direction? How might that work? 6. A good research topic to explore might be on what you tend to spend your money on the most. Look at your receipts for the past 3 months and see what you spent the most amount of money on. This likely means it is important to you. 7. A worthy research topic is sometimes very “meta.” If you’re looking at an organizational phenomenon, for example, try to think in ways that would explain your own life. 8. Make a brainstorm list. Write down 25 research topics in the next 30 minutes, and don’t stop, no matter how stupid they are. After the 30 minutes are done, go through and select the best research topics. 9. Look for available datasets for a research topic. If there’s already an existing research dataset, why not exploit it for your own research? 10. Mimic another person’s paper by trying to replicate what they did, and then trying to make a variant once you were able to reproduce the results. Are you interested in getting more examples of research topics, maybe you should check out some of these previous videos about writing and research: How To Write An Academic Paper In 5 Simple Steps - From The Bottom-Up https://youtu.be/ESLRFfmD8uk How To Write An Amazing Scientific Research Paper - Nerd-Out Wednesday https://youtu.be/hkzaichInt0 How To Write An Amazing Introduction For A Research Paper In Science - Nerd-Out Wednesday https://youtu.be/VJyceRiuY5w A Simple Trick To Find Your Gap Or Niche In Writing Papers And Beyond https://youtu.be/zGPiYSp61qs ******************** David Maslach is a research professor of entrepreneurship, innovation, and business strategy, I discuss topics, such as behavioral science, strategy, innovation, and entrepreneurship, and apply these to my new peer proofreading and editing platform. 08:39
This is relevant for any PhD that is looking for research topics in strategic management, research topics business management, or organizational behavior topics for a thesis. When looking into PhD research topics in strategic management for a thesis proposal (also called dissertation proposal), you should look for: 1. Problems that resonate with you. You have to be interested in it for a long time. 2. Problems that are going to be relevant in 5 years time, not that are relevant right now. 3. Problems that intersect an interesting context, an interesting method, an interesting theory. 4. Problems that are reasonably completed in time. One idea or relationship at a time. When you think it is too simple or dumb, that is perfect. 5. Problems in which you can gather data. You have to be practical, and think about where you can get data easily. Advantages Of A PhD Or DBA In Business Administration Degree - Thesis Help

15:05
I discuss the advantages of doing a PhD in Business Administration. Some programs will call this a Doctor of Business Administration (DBA). There are also executive doctoral programs in business that are quite similar to the PhD or DBA. This is part of my thesis help series where I am trying to provide helpful advice for anybody that is thinking of doing graduate school, particularly those interested in doing a masters or PhD in a business school. It will be very useful for those that are writing PhD theses in business. Why would you get a DBA or PhD degree? What are the advantages of a PhD in Business Administration? 1. PhD Salaries. The DBA Vs. MBA salary is actually quite similar, and will vary on the institution you graduate from. Generally, most doctorate in business will earn you over $100,000 per year in the USA and Canada, and slightly less in European countries. Of course, this will be different if you are doing an executive PhD program. 2. You will know a lot. The PhD thesis and the DBA thesis will make you think and understand the world. You all have a very deep and rich appreciation for organizations and firms and how they run. You will find that they are fascinatingly complex. 3. You should have a good understanding of statistics and science. Most PhD programs will train you on understanding how mathematics and science works, and you will very much appreciate the complexity of doing good science. Even if you just do a DBA thesis or PhD thesis, and that's all you do, you will have a good appreciation of science. 4. You can get a number of different kinds of jobs. PhD in Business Administration programs generally train researchers to go work in universities, but DBA programs train you to work in industry. It is not uncommon for people to have cross appointments with NBER or some other government agency. 5. You will be very entrepreneurial with your career. Doing a PhD means that you create your own research path, and it is up to you to make your career with your PhD in Business Administration. Is A PhD In Business Worth It? Limitations Of A Doctorate In Business Administration - Thesis Help

12:11
I discuss what are the limitations of getting your Doctorate in Business Administration. I am referring to both a PhD and a DBA degree. This is part of my thesis help series where I talk about topics that might be of interest to those that are pursuing graduate school or research, coming from the perspective of an actual research faculty. Is A PhD In Business Worth It? What Are The Limitations Of A Doctorate Degree? A doctorate degree is all about specialization. This means by definition that you are going to have to give up studying or learning about other things. You will become an expert in a specific area at the cost of knowing a lot and other areas. A PhD degree is an expensive degree if you account for opportunity cost. one of the biggest things you'll realize with doing a doctorate in business is that it is a costly degree in terms of its opportunity cost. You give up a lot to get a PhD, and thus, you have to be committed to completing the PhD program to gain any benefits from the degree. A PhD is somewhat isolating. Your goal is to become an expert in one particular area in the world, and thus, you have to have confidence in what you are doing to keep moving forward. A doctorate in business remove some of the mystery of how organizations work. Because you will understand markets and organizations a bit better, you might become disenfranchised with certain aspects of organizations. However, you'll likely grow in appreciation of other aspects. You will likely have to move. It is difficult to stay in one particular area to do a PhD, and you have to move to where the organizational science is hot or that appreciates what you are interested in. 7 Tips For Meeting With A PhD Advisor / Graduate Supervisor

14:50
These are a few tips that I learnt from meeting with my own PhD Advisors and with interacting with graduate students. These tips are useful for people that are meeting with their graduate supervisors, whether they are PhD advisors or Masters supervisors. 1. Always go to their office with a least some work completed. Your job is to have at least 1 sentence completed from the last PhD meeting. You need to work during your PhD, and this is one way to make sure that you will complete your degree. 2. Do not disappear. Check in with your PhD advisors on a regular (every other week) basis. We want to make sure that you are not getting into a funk, and that you are making progress on your PhD. 3. When you are stuck on a problem, go talk to your PhD advisors. I would toil at one problem too long, and forget that I can ask people for help. 4. You can talk to PhD advisors about occasional life problems. Completing your PhD is a lot about life, and you have to deal with life issues openly. 5. Think in terms of status and time. You arrange your schedule to meet their schedule. Some advisors are not going to make arrangements for you. 6. Graduate advisors are people too. Often they will have up days, and then they will have down days. You have to role with the punches. 7. Try to smile during the graduate meeting. This helps to deal with tough meetings, and to get through tough moments. PhD In Canada Or The USA: What Are The Differences?

14:55
There are some key differences between doing a PhD in Canada versus doing one in the USA. However, keep in mind that doing a PhD is a global degree. I mean that if you do research, you have to compete with everyone around the world. What are the differences between a PhD in Canada or the USA? The size of the market for PhDs. The marketplace for universities in Canada is a lot more smaller, and the number of ones that do research on a given topic is even smaller. The USA is a massive engine for higher education, so you can more easily find jobs. You will face the liability of foreignness if you do a PhD in Canada. Canada is just less well known in the rest of the world, so you will not have the brand recognition. Getting scholarships and stipends is generally easier in Canada. NSF and NIH grants are generally impossible to get, however, the equivalent funding sources in Canada, NSERC and SSHRC are more available. Some people complained about the cold in Canada, but it is no worse than the North East in the USA. I would almost say that people in the US are more option to industry collaboration, and industry opportunities. In the end, there are just nuances and I would not say that they matter too much to your research career if you are dedicated to the profession. ************ Check out: After The Research Gap: What To Do After The Research Gap? https://youtu.be/8syQdkhzepg What Is A Fly-Out Interview In Grad School? What’s the Difference Between A Heuristic And A Bias In Decision-Making? Nerd-Out Wednesday

09:04
I discuss the difference between a heuristic and a bias in decision-making. A heuristic is a cognitive shortcut that allows you to make faster rough decisions that are often “good enough.” A bias in decision-making occurs when the choices you make systematically differs from the optimal choice. A heuristic can result in a bias in decision-making if the heuristic is inaccurate or poorly matches the environment. A heuristic is likely to be in accurate when you have a poor mental model, or an involved in such a way that you poorly understood the environment. The most likely reason why heuristics are inaccurate is because the environment changed, and you’re trying to apply an old heuristic to a new environment. This can occur when technologies change, or consumer preferences change. Heuristics can be quite accurate if you calibrate be heuristic from time to time. The bias often results because we do not calibrate or update our mental models on a regular basis. If you want to increase the accuracy of your heuristics in decision-making, keep an open mind, and continuously test any assumptions that you hold. Essentially the key way to improve decision making heuristics and to remove any decision-making biases is it to continuously learn over time. Doctorate In Business: What Are The Benefits Of Having A Doctorate In Business Administration?

14:44
What are the benefits of having a doctorate in business administration? Are you interested in getting you doctorate in business administration? First of all, I am either talking about a PhD or a DBA degree. They are distinct in their outcomes and process, but will yield you similar ideas. From my perspective, there are four benefits of getting a doctorate in business administration. 1. A PhD in Business Administration will allow you to see things in new ways. You cannot put a price tag on this ability to identify new ideas, or do you have a very rich understanding of the world. 2. A Doctorate in Business Administration has status associated with it. This is not the same as financial success. However, the caveat is that you actually have to going to complete the degree. 3. A PhD in Business Administration will give you a very focused understanding of your research topic. If you have something that you’re very curious about, the PhD will help you understand that topic a lot more than an MBA will. A Masters of Business Administration just give you a broad overview. 4. You will develop a ability to nerd-out on ideas. You will be able to focus on curious things a lot more than you used to do. Notice that I never mentioned the financial pay-back of the degree. Doing a PhD is not a degree that you should think about the financial returns. There are returns, but they are much longer than one would expect. The primary benefit of the doctorate of business administration is to allow you to see the world in a different way. What Are PhD In Business Administration Salaries? And, Why?

12:44
You can check out the salaries from the AASCB here: https://www.aacsb.edu/publications/datareports/staff-compensation-and-demographics Why are the PhD In Business Administration salaries this way? 1. Supply and demand for the skill set. Different people working on different ideas are in more demand than others, and the supply is relatively low as only a few people are able to get a PhD. 2. Many of these folks already have in demand degrees. It is not uncommon to find faculty in business schools with law degrees, accounting degrees, engineers and other degrees. People self select into this career. 3. The value of some of the knowledge can be generated to have a return. Whether it does or does not is not relevant. What matters is other people believe that this knowledge is some how more applicable than other knowledge. Also, some of the knowledge is likely easier to demonstrate a return. 4. People at the top of their career are valuable, inimitable, rare and non-substitutable. It was really difficult to get there, and few people in this world choose to be like them. If you select any industry / field, and you get the top performers, you will find very high wages. PhD Programs After Bachelors: Can I Get A Doctorate In Business Without A Masters Degree?

10:43
In short, yes. Most PhD programs will take bright students with a Bachelor’s degree. However, not having a Masters or an MBA is penalty against you. You can imagine that getting into a PhD program is like a point system. Everything you do well gives you points, and everything you do poorly on the application takes away points. What is normal is for the PhD evaluator to add up the total number of ‘points’ for you application, and take the best applicants. For example, if you have a high GPA or grade in your undergraduate program, you get 1 point. If you come from a school that is well recognized, you get another point. If you have letters of recommendation from people evaluators know, you get 1 point. And so, and so forth. Normally what happens is there a pool of obvious PhD candidates and a bunch of people that are a clear ‘no.’ If you have a good year for applications, then you will have to compete against steeper competition with better credentials. What does the Masters degree or MBA do for you? It gives you extra points when evaluators look at your application. For a business school application, having work experience and an MBA is generally a large plus. What if the Masters degree or MBA was from a non-recognized university? What if your GPA or grades were low? These are likely going to count against your application, and lower the points that you get. Check out: Are European Degrees Recognized In The US? PhD Dissertation: Tips On Editing A Dissertation / Thesis - Monday Writes

10:27
What should you look for when you edit a dissertation? There are several things that are important to editing a thesis, and I will discuss these important steps below. This video is market of my Monday Writes series where I discuss things that are important to academic writers, undergraduate students, graduate students, or people that are interesting in proofreading or writing. Here are some important topics to think about when you edit a dissertation: 1. Are the constructs defined early and often? New constructs in every dissertation should be discussed and explained in detail early on in the paper. 2. Are there redundant sections? Tell the authors to remove material that seems redundant or boring when you are reading the thesis. 3. Can you cut out extra phrases? Look for phrases that you can cut out of the dissertation. There are often many phrases that you can cut out and still get the same impact. 4. Are the sections following the guidelines of the university? Most universities and colleges have their own guidelines for writing. Download these guidelines and apply them to the manuscript. 5. Is the reference list a mess? Make sure that the reference list as the same format when editing a dissertation. 6. Can you understand the dissertation? If the dissertation is to complex for a lay editor to read the manuscript, this usually implies that the dissertation needs more work. You can communicate that to the writer when editing the manuscript. Business PhD vs. Economics PhD: PhD In Business Administration Vs A PhD In Economics? - Thesis Help

12:42
You might think that these PhDs are similar, but they differ dramatically in their focus, style, and outcomes. The general focus of a Business PhD is to understand how to how organizations work, and how they interact with their environment. They may interact through markets, or other stakeholders. Some people study decision-making within organizations, some study markets, some study technology, and other people study culture. The general focus of an Economics PhD is to understand how to improve decisions and make optimal decisions for the economy. An assumption that is made a lot in Economics research is that there are best alternatives that one could choose. What are some differences between a PhD In Business Administration Vs a PhD In Economics? 1. People that study organizations often borrow from Economics literature, and other fields like Sociology or Psychology, but the general focus is on organizations. 2. You can also study organizations in Economics, but they have distinctive assumptions that they tend to make about organizations, such as competition and inherent assumptions about supply and demand. It is common in many fields in organizations often pit their theories against traditional Economic theories, such as in Entrepreneurship or behavioral theories. 3. Economics trying tends to be more methodologically rigorous than the training in a PhD in Business Administration, however, Business PhDs are much more option to differing methodologies of study, such as ethnographies. 4. Business PhDs are trained to teach and do research in business schools, but Economics PhDs are trained to do research in Economics departments. These have different outcomes on salaries and career outcomes. Business PhDs generally may also provide more focused and practical guidelines for managers and how to run a business in their teaching. Doing A PhD In Your 30s Or PhD Before 30?: Average Age To Start PhD in Business Admin - Thesis Help

17:42
Knowing when to start a PhD is a big decision. Many people think that you should do a PhD before 30, or immediately after undergraduate school. However, you will be surprised by how many people actually do their PhD in their 30s. Indeed, most people that pursue a PhD in Business Administration will be doing a PhD in their 30s. Why do people pursue a PhD in their 30s in the business school? The primary reason is that most PhDs in Business administration usually require an MBA or in an equivalent degree. It is totally normal to start a PhD in Business Administration in your early and even late 30s. Here is what you need to know if you are think about a PhD and age: 1. If you choose to do a research intensive PhD in Business, know that the outcomes of doing research generally take a long time. If you start your PhD in Strategy in your 40s, for example, you might not get tenure at a Business School until you are 55. This could be even later. 2. Young PhD’s are usually greatly discounted in the classroom. This is especially true if you are expecting to teach executives or MBAs. Being older or doing your PhD at 30 is often an asset if you want to teach. 3. At the current moment we are facing a situation where are many senior people that are looking to retire but few people are able to replace their administrative roles. People with administrative experience might actually have an advantage when they are thinking of roles like the Dean of a Business School. 4. If you have a family, you will face many more demands in school than other students will. This is fine, but just know that there are lots to do in school and you will be making many family-work trade-offs. What Is The Unit Of Analysis In Research? - Nerd-Out Wednesdays

10:31
The unit of analysis is the phenomenon or entity being studied. It is generally the thing that you are sampling in a quantitative study. It varies depending on what you are interested in. The unit of analysis may differ from the unit of observation, as you use the unit of analysis to explain the relationship set the theoretical level in the unit of observation occurs when you actually sample data. This idea of understanding the unit of observation versus the unit of analysis is important for quantitative research. The unit of analysis is important for both quantitative research and qualitative research, but it is often discussed in quantitative research. It differs from the level of analysis. The level of analysis generally pertains to the level at which you are analyzing a particular mechanism for a unit of analysis. For example, you might use population ecology to study the behavior of firms. Population ecology occurs at the population level (ie. aggregate) of firms but you are really studying firm behavior. It is important to get the right unit of analysis so that the theories you choose hold and are consistent when you analyze your data. For example, if you analyze transaction costs but then you look at firm behavior, you’re likely going to capture something other than transaction costs. Generally, you want to have the unit of analysis at the same level of analysis of your theory. You can also focus on a unit of analysis that cuts across levels of analysis. This is called multi-level theorizing, but it generally is not recommended because unless it is well done, it makes your paper seem very shallow. Most people end up just gathering theories from many different areas to explain the unit of analysis. The reason why you want to ensure that the unit of analysis in the level of analysis are similar is because you are unlikely to explain the phenomenon fully if you choose different levels of analysis, and rule out other possible explanations. What Do You Do With A PhD In Innovation And Entrepreneurship?

09:40
Many people think that most people will go into industry if they get a PhD in innovation or entrepreneurship, this is rarely true. Most people go into academia if they try to get a doctorate in innovation and entrepreneurship. You will not go start a business, or create new technologies. The majority of the people will become business school professors, or professors in an engineering school. If you get these positions, this is a good career, although there are difficulties, like competitive demands. Academia is generally very competitive. The people that go to industry after a Doctorate in Innovation And Entrepreneurship, tend to be from DBA (Doctorate of Business Administration) programs. These programs are more focused at providing a doctoral education for those people that are interested in industry or consulting. What kind of people get a PhD in Innovation and Entrepreneurship? Generally, these are the people that are interested in something, and just curious about the world. There are many things that we still do not know about how innovation and entrepreneurship works. For example, how do entrepreneurs think, and why do we believe that they are somehow different? Where do innovations come from? Much of these ideas will draw upon psychology, sociology, and economics. If I was to do my PhD over again, would I do it again? To be honest, I don’t know. There are significant costs in pursuing the PhD, but once you get an academic career is exciting and interesting. It really is a personal choice that is likely to depend on who you are, and what your current lifestyle is. Grad School Interview: Questions To Ask During Your Grad School Interview For A PhD

11:15
There are many questions that you ponder if you are thinking of doing a PhD. This would have been helpful to have these questions when I was going through my own PhD In Business Administration. Here are several questions that you are free to ask during your grad school interview: 1. What do you research? 2. What kind of research support will I get as a graduate student? 3. How would you handle if I decided to switch supervisors? 4. Where have your PhD students gone in the past? Who is your most famous student? 5. What would happen if my advisor moved to a different institution? 6. What is the average salary of those who graduated in this program? What is your pass rate? 7. Where do PhD students usually publish in this program? The goal is to find a program that is both research intensive but also fits your lifestyle. You should always weight research heavier than teaching when you first start your PhD. Dr. vs Professor: What Do You Call Someone With a PhD?

05:49
The key thing to remember with problem is to be polite, and choose the title that best fits the setting. If you are in a formal setting, then you likely should use professor if that particular person is working at a university. Generally, if you’re in undergraduate student, the best thing is to always call them by Professor. If you were working with that particular professor as a graduate student, you should ask them what they prefer once you’ve been working with them for a long time. How To Get A PhD In Strategy And Innovation - Thesis Help

14:36
I talk about why getting a PhD in Strategy and Innovation is very interesting. This is also of interest to those that might consider a PhD in Strategic Management or an Innovation DBA. I also discuss their careers you might get from it, and as well, where you might actually find a university with a Doctorate In Strategy And Innovation. What do you study when you get a PhD in Strategy and Innovation? Often, why are you going to study with a PhD in strategy and innovation is how companies produce technologies, and as well as how technologies impact the value produced and appropriated by companies. This is not inclusive, but it does cover the majority of what people will study in this area. Why is a PhD in strategy and innovation extremely interesting? You get to study at the 10000 foot high prospective of why companies actually innovate, or why they might spend money on research and development. You also get to study technology and innovation from a broad perspective. This is much different than using a engineering or natural sciences perspective. You are much more of a social scientist. Where might you find a program with a Doctorate in Strategy and Innovation? I would first suggest that you go in talk to the faculty of where you did your MBA or undergrad and ask them where the best possible place that you should go to is. There are many PhD programs that are not called strategy and innovation, and yet people will actually study strategy and innovation. You can also look at the rankings of the Colleges of Businesses around the world. I would be quite careful though as there are many programs that have world class faculty that are not in the top places on this list. You also have to think strategically and find the place that best suits your needs. Examples Of Latent And Manifest Variables - Nerd-Out Wednesday

13:51
What are latent and manifest variables? Latent variables are the unobservable theoretical constructs that we has researchers study. Manifest variables are the observable indicators of the latent variables. We as researchers study the latent variables, but we can only measure the manifest variables that we can observe with our 5 senses. Here is an example. How do I know that my dog actually loves me? I cannot observe the latent variable of love, and I will never be able to with a dog. However, we can observe the manifest variables that present themselves. She wags her tail, pants and comes nears me to get attention when I am around. These are all manifest indicators of the unobservable. This happens all the time within research on organizations. How do you measure risk and uncertainty? How do you measure innovation? How do we measure expectations? We have to measure manifest variables that are often very imperfect. It is often the case that is were we can make a large contribution to the literature by looking at this divide between manifest and latent variables. What Is A Dissertation Defense?: Dissertation Defense Tips For PhDs - Thesis Help

14:56
What is a dissertation defense? A dissertation defense occurs when a PhD candidate defends their work. Usually a panel of experts, some from inside and outside of a university will ask questions about the candidate’s dissertation. What is a dissertation defense like? From the PhD candidate’s prospective, it is quite stressful and I don’t know of anyone that likes this process. However, many ideas become clarified with the dissertation defense. From the examiner’s side, it is a chance to read through and clarify another person’s work. The goal is to help the potential PhD to see their work more clarity and in a simpler way. How long does a dissertation defense last? The PhD defense can last any length of time, but in most universities, it will last several hours. It will be definitely longer than 1 hour and shorter than 5 hours. However, the length of time can vary dramatically based on the candidate’s work and the institution. What are dissertation defense tips for PhDs? 1. Practice rehearsing your presentation many times. You will find out where you do not understand the material when you rehearse your presentation. 2. Read up on some of the latest literature. You want to read up on the latest literature in your area so you can speak to why your research is important. 3. Read your thesis several times. You should know your thesis well, and be able to defend your thesis such that you can demonstrate your mastery of the subject. 4. Create a list of potential questions that people will ask, and have preplanned answers for them. For example, why is your research important? How is it different than everything else? Why did you use this measure and not something else? 5. Try to enjoy the process. You will be stressed out. This is a given, but try to lean in and enjoy this stress rather than be afraid of it. 6. Plan an activity for afterward. You should have something planned, either going out for dinner to vent or to celebrate. Measurement error - Threats To Statistical Conclusion Validity - Nerd-out Wednesday

09:55
In this video, I talk about measure error which is a statistical conclusion validity problem. Threats to statistical conclusion validity occurs when when draws inferences based on statistical tests and the statistical tests are misrepresenting the actual causal relationship. Measurement error is quite common in the social sciences as we measure imperfect constructs. We often do not have a good understanding of the construct itself, and then you compound on top of that items that do not measure the construct well, and you can have problems with statistical conclusion validity. Measurement error reduces the relationship between the variables of interest. To reduce measurement error and to improve the statistical conclusion validity, I would suggest the following: 1. Keep constructs simple. Don’t force constructs. 2. Measure constructs in multiple ways, both with more methods and more items within each method. 3. Think in terms of ideal ways to test. 4. “Measure twice, cut once.” Check out: Range Restriction: Why It is Important For Statistical Conclusion Validity - Nerd-out Wednesday https://youtu.be/tF-kp4GQJLk Dealing With Low Statistical Power - Threat To Statistical Conclusion Validity - Nerd-Out Wednesday https://youtu.be/JRV9hdPssWA What Is The Average Effect? - Words In Science - Nerd-Out Wednesday https://youtu.be/ZV0H5VEp0sQ What Is Regression? How To Ask A Professor For A Letter Of Recommendation For Grad School - Monday Writes

10:15
How do you ask for a letter of recommendation from a professor? The key idea of asking for a letter recommendation is to put yourself in their shoes. There are many things to think about when you asked for a letter recommendation: 1. Does the professor know you enough? Did you do well in the class? If you don’t know them well, get to know them. If you can feel comfortable that the professor knows and likes you, than it is acceptable to ask them for a letter of reference. 2. How can you make the process easier for them? In the email for the letter recommendation, I would send them additional documents: (1) prewritten letter by you to make it easier for them, (2) a 1 page bullet point sheet of interesting facts not on your resume, (3) your resume / CV, and (4) a plan of what you are going to be doing in the future. Your goal is to make the letter of recommendation process simple and easy for them. 3. How can you demonstrate that you will make them proud? The key aspect behind a letter recommendation is that you are getting a vote of confidence. How is it that you are going to make the proud to write this letter? 4. Always be grateful. Your job is to check in and let them know how grateful you are of their support. Intermittent PhDs In Business: Weekend PhD Programs, Part-Time PhD, Online PhDs, & Executive DBAs

11:15
Intermittent PhDs in Business are weekend PhDs, part-time business PhDs, online PhDs, executive PhDs, or executive DBA programs. Should you do an intermittent PhD, like a weekend PhD program or a part-time Business PhD? For the majority of people that are thinking about becoming a business professor, the answer is a firm ‘no.’ A PhD in Business should be your full-time 60 hour a week job. However, this does not mean that everyone wants to become a tenure-tracked business professor. People want a PhD for all sorts of reasons: (1) status, (2) the challenge, (3) to apply knowledge, or (4) just for the joy of learning. For any other reason than doing research for your full-time job, doing intermittent PhD in business could work for you. What are the limitations of doing weekend business PhDs or part-time business PhDs? 1. You will likely not get a tenure-track professor position in a major university. You can teach, but you can also teach with significant experience and an MBA. 2. You have a high chance of failure. Generally, any program that is self-directed is more difficult as the only person that is answerable to your performance is you. 3. Weekend PhDs and Part-time PhDs are quite difficult as it requires you to devote all of your off-time to even more difficult work than you are used to. 4. Executive PhDs, DBAs, Online PhDs in Business, weekend PhDs in Business, and Part-time PhD programs all tend to be rather expensive. For many people that can afford such programs this is fine, but if you are thinking of doing it to increase your income and you are already making little money, do not do these programs. Most often, you will not get a large increase in salary that you are seeking. PhD After MBA? PhD in Finance or PhD in Strategy? Steps To A PhD in Business Administration

14:06
This video for those that are interested in doing a PhD in Business Administration. There are three steps that you should consider when choosing your PhD: 1. Choose whether you want to do a PhD after the MBA. A PhD in Business Administration is a rather different degree compared to an MBA. A PhD is much more I can do you a social scientist or a PhD in Chemistry than an MBA. Your job will be focused on discovery. An MBA is focused on execution. You should really go out and ask other people what they think about the PhD in Business Administration. If you want quick returns and probably an easier lifestyle, I would choose to go to a MBA job route. However, the returns on your sense of accomplishment is higher if you do a PhD. It is the same feeling that you might get if you climb a mountain. 2. Choose your field in Business Administration. For me, it was whether I wanted to do a PhD in Finance or a PhD in Strategy. A PhD in Accounting was out. Both of these types of fields are interesting and they pay well. You should really think about what you want to research in the long-run. This will be your life. 3. Choose your set of schools that you are interested in. There are lots of things to consider, such as location and costs. These matter, but, if I were you, I would focus on research interests. Overcoming PhD Challenges: Solutions To Common PhD Challenges

10:55
I think there are common PhD challenges that doctoral students face, and they are equally challenging. These YouTube videos are geared towards those that are doing research, and the challenges that they face. 1. Social problems during a PhD. If you are experiencing social problems during a PhD, I would recommend that you go join an outside club so that you can maintain your sanity. 2. Motivation challenges. I would recommend to overcome the motivation challenge to get your work done to do one simple trick: Just start by writing 1 word per day, and by writing some form of diary of what you find interesting. 3. Financial challenges. You should look at ways to leverage your understanding in meaningful and simple ways. Also, just get your PhD finished as fast as you can. The best way to overcome the financial challenges of doing a PhD is to complete the PhD and move on. 4. Advisor - student relationship challenges. Think of this as a cost-benefit analysis Try to build other relationships, and to use your frustrations to complete your thesis quicker to get out of that relationship. 5. Getting stuck on a problem. Go talk to other people or take a walk. You will be surprised how easy it is to solve the problem when you do that. Check out: You Can Finish Your PhD! Best Free Writing Apps For Academics, Writers, And Graduate Students

09:21
In this video I talk about the best free writing apps for academics, writers, and graduate students. Writing is in important part of these careers, and as an academic I thought I would be as help as possible to others. Here are some free writing apps that might help with your writing process. Note – I generally write on MS Word and do not have too many writing apps that I go to on a regular basis. I thought I would just compile a list of writing apps for you: 1. www.grammarly.com Most people know about Grammarly, and I truly like what they are doing. Grammarly uses software to identify writing errors. While I don’t use grammarly on a regular basis, I can tell that they have the writer in mind. 2. https://evernote.com/ Lots of people use Evernote for their writing down of ideas and taking notes. Again, what I do is use plain old paper for making notes or a text editor, but you might like this application. 3. www.prowritingaid.com ProwritingAid is often used by other writers. I have not heard of feedback from friends on this writing tool, but they do have a lot of features that might be useful. 4. https://www.libreoffice.org I did try using Libre Office a few years ago because they had some features that MS Word did not have. Libre Office is an open source word processor. All of the features are similar and they work a lot like MS Word. Just because I focus on simplicity, I removed this writing app from my computer. However, I still think it is a good source if you want to get MS Word for free. 5. https://www.latex-project.org/ If you are an academic you really need to check out Latex. It is open source word processing software to make your writing appear very nice, and provides the best output for any paper. I used Latex in the past and I would use it again. This is used a lot in any technical writing. 6. https://osf.io/ Open science framework is a platform to plan your studies before you begin. I have not used it, but I could imagine for large studies this could be very useful. 7. https://cos.io/prereg/ Pre-registration at the Center for Open Science. Pre-registering your experiments is important to improve the validity of your studies. It is an important part of scientific writing, and likely will continue in importance. Doing A PhD For An Executive Business Career

05:46
Doing a PhD should not be considered for an executive business career, unless you are in the hard sciences. It is somewhat common to see people get a PhD, and then an MBA in the hard sciences. This allows them to go into management after their science career. However, a PhD in Business Administration is geared towards becoming a professor at Business Schools. Indeed, there are strong norms against going into industry after you do your PhD. Although, some people do pursue the non-academic route, they tend to do so after they decided that the PhD academic route was not for them. I would highly suggest that you only do a PhD in a Business School if you are choosing to become a Professor. *************** Check out: What Is A PhD In Healthcare Administration? How Do Professors Check For Plagiarism?

08:46
It turns out that checking for plagiarism is quite easy given how the internet works, and human behavior. First of all, it appears to plagiarizing is quite common. When I type, “how do professors…” plagiarizing is top of the list. If you are plagiarizing someone’s work, it generally means that you are either being lazy or you are resource constrained. You are unlikely to do an elaborate scheme to protect yourself from being detected. Many professors, including myself, use turnitin.com to check for plagiarism. However, I find it easy to check for plagiarism by just sensing when the the tone of the article changes, and doing a simple google of a few lines of text. It turns out if you are going to plagiarize, you are going to plagiarize the words from the first few sites on Google. Google is very smart at suggesting the best content for the student, and it is also very smart at suggesting the best content for the professor. Why do people plagiarize in such a simple manner. They are doing a cost benefit analysis. They think what is the benefit I will get if I cheat the system compared to the probability of getting caught and the cost of getting caught. They generally believe they will not get caught, even if the penalty is quite high. Those that do cheat and get away with it consistently, usually have some elaborate scheme that consumes more resources than it does to do the work. What is the lesson of thinking about plagiarizing? Don’t cheat as the cost generally outweighs the benefit of actually doing your work. You can usually get the work done very quickly if you just sit down and do the work. PhD In Leadership: How To Get A PhD In Organizational Leadership?

15:50
Many people might be interested in doing a PhD in Leadership, but they are likely going to be mistaken in the program that you're going to choose. Most leadership programs do not call themselves a leadership program. What you are looking for are phds in strategic management with an emphasis on Upper Echelons or Top Management Theory, or a PhD in Organizational Behavior, with either a focus on individuals or teams. There are also people doing leadership in education, and strategic human resources. There are going to be significant differences in the outcomes that you Get if you pursue a PhD in Leadership versus a PhD in either Strategic Management or Organizational Behavior. A PhD in leadership is going to be more practitioner-oriented, however the more mainstream PhD programs are older and more established. What will you study in this PhD programs? you will study things like the dynamics of teams in large organizations, and how it affects the performance of the firm. You will also study things like leader-follower dynamics. You will be surprised and how little we actually know about leadership and its impact on the organization. There is still much to be understood. The key thing that you should be thinking about when you are doing a PhD is to understand why you want to do it. a PhD is generally a research degree, and you will likely be doing research activities if you pursue it. If you're thinking of doing a PhD in leadership to understand your business a little more or to go into clinical practice, I would recommend that you look for comparable MBA programs as well, or even industrial psychology programs. **************** Check out: PhD In Canada Or The USA: What Are The Differences? https://youtu.be/QIe8Y3Jmckk After The Research Gap: What To Do After The Research Gap? https://youtu.be/8syQdkhzepg What Is A Fly-Out Interview In Grad School? 5 Simple Tips For Doing Well On Your Grad School Comprehensive Exams

08:04
Writing your comprehensive exams is very stressful for most PhD students. I don’t know of anyone that loved the comprehensive exams. Once you are done the comprehensive exams or core exams, you are happy you did that step of the PhD process, but you are also happy that you will never do them again. Here are a five tips that might help you with your PhD comprehensive exams. Spend an adequate time on study for the exams. You should spend enough time preparing for the comprehensive exams but not so much time that you cut into your time for doing research and writing papers. Look around you for research questions with the theories you are using. If you read the newspaper, then see if you can apply the theories you learnt to come up with new lens on the thing you read. Create a spreadsheet of the different theories and assumptions of these theories. Make sure that you think and write about the different theories, and how they fit together. What are the similarities and differences between the theories? What theories do you prefer and why? Tackle a set of theories or literatures in a set period of time. I would have a target of what theories you want to read through and keep track of during your study period. Make sure you cover these papers. For the last 1-2 weeks, try to read some of the current articles in your lead journals. See if you can make sense of these papers using the tables and spreadsheets you created for your comprehensive exam study guide. ************* Check out: PhD Job Market: I Have A PhD And Can't Get A Job (PhD Jobs In Business, Marketing, and Management) https://youtu.be/IdkYmFKAGYA How Many Years Of Coursework In A PhD / Doctorate Of Business? https://youtu.be/4iIucp6C2Sk 16 Business PhD Programs Basics: 16 Things You Should Know Before You Do A Business School Doctorate https://youtu.be/Rixl40n9mHo How Do Professors Check For Plagiarism? https://youtu.be/MqfVyUj3Zas PhD Guilt: Feeling Guilty As A Professor When Not Doing Research / Work https://youtu.be/WRJVX4TaS9Q Returning To Become A Tenure-Track Professor After Taking Time Off https://youtu.be/t3agr56vOic PhD Rejection: Should You Be Concerned With Business PhD Rejection Results? https://youtu.be/0z2xD5dvq9Y Career Advice For Doctoral Students In Strategy Research https://youtu.be/PD6QIYnrYU4 How To Have A Discussion With A Professor About Graduate School https://youtu.be/maVNmA3XmXI GMAT VS GRE: Which Is Easier? https://youtu.be/Dr50uzEUi-w When Do PhD / Graduate Programs Start? Is It Possible To Get Multiple PhDs?

06:56
Absolutely, it is possible to get multiple PhDs. Generally, there are two reasons for the multiple PhDs: You are upgrading your current PhD from another country. You are transferring to a new area of research, and you need to get extra skills in a new area. Why don’t more people get multiple PhDs? Getting a PhD is generally a tough process, and very few people want to do one over again once they do it once. **************** Check out: Should PhD Students Have A Website? https://youtu.be/CfeM5XWRfPs Finding Ways To Travel During Your PhD (In Business Administration) https://youtu.be/VKtHeNnhp9I How To Make The Most Of Your PhD https://youtu.be/HbTYX_G9zDw Is It OK To Do A PhD / Grad School After Being Out Of School For a Long-Time? https://youtu.be/Q0H0DF7Yfig Undergrad Not Engineering / Science / Math, Should You Do A PhD In Business / Innovation? https://youtu.be/NyEzf2WDgP8 Exercising In Grad School https://youtu.be/5s4GZeyWLj4 Completing PhDs For Working Professionals https://youtu.be/UtsDCtVH4tc A Simple Trick To Find Out The Best Graduate / PhD Programs https://youtu.be/AlLhNYBOY-4 What Are Some Requirements To Get A Doctorate In Business Administration? https://youtu.be/qGJPvHpwUAA Is A PhD Useless?: What Are Valuable Skills You Gain During A PhD? https://youtu.be/Aq2TE4WCWbE How Much Can You Make With A PhD in Business? https://youtu.be/AU_nRRvpuxI How To Budget In Graduate School. https://youtu.be/mWiLxIZaPsM Why Do Dual PhDs, Joint PhDs, MBA/PhDs, JD/PhDs, And PhDs With Other Programs? https://youtu.be/HQpQ-JnpoRk Negotiating Doctorate / PhD Stipends in Business Administration Programs https://youtu.be/aZr91cUOwv0 PhD Options After An MBA With No Recognition https://youtu.be/Hjbvjp-P2k8 Dr. vs Professor: What Do You Call Someone With a PhD? https://youtu.be/F7z4HgMQQSs Doctorate / PhD In Innovation: What is Your Focus? https://youtu.be/v26rY4UKNtc What Is The Size Of PhD Classes?: Why Are PhD Classes So Small? https://youtu.be/MEFkYxYKfOU 2 Masters Degrees Vs PhD: Is It Easier To Find A Job With Masters / MBA Than With A PhD? https://youtu.be/Pg7i7dxOgjc The Biggest Lesson Learned For A PhD https://youtu.be/fcd3M1T826Q Graduate School Teaching: Tips On Being A Graduate Student Instructor https://youtu.be/TcYSdEIbsG8 Doctor Of Business Administration (DBA) And PhD in Business Administration Program Cost https://youtu.be/9JD-PMqRusU How Long Does It Take To Become A Full Professor? How To Increase Switching Costs? - Business Strategy

09:11
I discuss how to increase switching costs. Switching costs are the costs that a customer or user has when they switch to a new firm or technology. Why are switching costs important? Switching costs prevent people from leaving your business, and thus increases the customer base for your business. A larger customer base that is active is generally more profitable. How can you increase switching costs? 1. Make your product / technology more customized and used to the specific needs of the customer. The better that you are solving the customers problems, the less likely they will look for other solutions. 2. Invest in your customer to increase switching costs. Try to invest in improving the relationship between you in the customer as this creates a stronger relationship. 3. Don’t be unpredictable. Make your behavior as predictable as possible to increase trusted relationships between you and the customer. 4. Look for products with increasing returns to scale. If there are more people using the product, than these people will be the draw to the product, not you or the product’s features. 5. Become a trusted advisor. People are only likely to switch if they do not like the information that you are providing. Provide content that helps and motivates users every day. Why You Should (NOT) Get A PhD Or Doctorate In Business Administration

There are many reasons to get a PhD or a doctorate in business administration (DBA), but there are a lot of reasons that people don’t talk to you about why you should not get a doctorate in business administration. Reasons not to get a Doctorate in Business Administration. 1. The returns on your education are far too long in the future. Please do not consider a PhD as a way to actually slack off for the rest of your life. It is very difficult! 3. You will cry or get angry at somebody multiple times. Because there is a lot of uncertainty and ambiguity in a PhD in Business Administration, you often get very emotional and take this out on others. 4. MBA Vs. PhD: What Is The Difference Between A MBA And PhD In Business Administration - Thesis Help

09:09
There are a couple of important differences between an Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and a Doctor of Business Administration. What are the key differences?: 1. In a PhD program in Business Administration, you will be focused on building and developing theory. In a MBA program, you will be focused on an applied project, even when you are doing research. 2. A PhD in Business Administration is focused on publishing and advancing the science of organizations and markets. In an MBA, you will focused on solving a localized problem. 3. You will have a much better understanding of statistics in a PhD program. An MBA will be much more focused on gathering and analyzing simple trends. 4. Your professors are your equals in a PhD of Business Administration. In an MBA, you are less likely to develop a relationship with your professors. 5. Your main job in a PhD is the generation of novel ideas. In an MBA, your main job is to execute and learn how to execute as a team. Things About A PhD In Business Nobody Talks About

09:17
You noticed on this channel I'm pretty open about Academia and being a business professor. there are many different things that people never talk about when they do their PHD in business. I want to talk about a few of these things in this video. You will never be the same person once you do your PhD. You will look at the world completely different compared to what you did prior to doing your PhD. A PhD is a difficult and often painful journey in which few people make it to what is considered the pinnacle of success in the field. As a corollary, this means that many people drop out for various reasons. People are motivated to do their own PhD for all sorts of reasons beyond your own point of view. The stress and demands of doing a doctorate does not disappear as you progress and achieve more success in the field. It actually gets worse. That discovery of a new idea takes years and when you achieve that discovery it happens in a matter of seconds. Academia is based on a system of reciprocity and social norms. Without this reciprocity, the entire system collapses. Why Do Dual PhDs, Joint PhDs, MBA/PhDs, JD/PhDs, And PhDs With Other Programs?

19:41
There are a lot of common joint PhD or dual PhD programs that one could think of: PhD and law degree, PhD and MD, and PhD and MBA programs. I personally am a big fan of them because they give you options. If you find out that you do not like one thing you can do another. It also allows you to see things much more creatively than others. Having a different view point gives you a new perspective. You should also think about what they are training you to become. If you are doing a PhD / Law degree, you are likely going to work in a law school as a professor. A PhD and MBA program will likely get you to work in a pharma company, and a PhD / MD program will train you to do research at a med school. You can also create your own PhD program by taking courses in a particular area. I find that people are generally nice, and will allow you to take courses in anything in university. It benefitted me a lot to take difficult courses in other areas (PhD in Finance / Econometrics) while I was doing my PhD in Strategy. What are the problems with doing a joint PhD degree? 1. Not everyone is going to be supportive. It requires extra work for other people to do this, but aware that you are putting a lot of stress on them. 2. It will likely take you longer to finish your PhD. If you are worried about getting well trained, than this is worth the time to pursue the extra training. However, it will be depressing when you see other people graduate that did not do this route. 3. Some people are going to discount you as being not serious about a particular topic. PhD Options After MBA: What Should Be Your Next Degree After MBA?

13:11
I discuss several PhD options and other course options that you can take after you do your MBA. If you are interested in doing research and are curious about the world, stay tuned for the discussion about PhD options after the MBA. If you are choosing to do a practical route and you prefer to execute on ideas, rather than create them. Consider these options: 1. Law degree. A person will a MBA / LLB law degree well help you understand the business environment. Normally what you will do is go into some form of corporate law or a partnership. 2. Accounting degree. A CPA after a MBA will provide a good combination for you to excel in accounting. 3. Finance. A CFA is fairly difficult to get but allows you to work in a securities industry. If you are interested in generating new ideas and you are curious about the world, these are great PhD options after an MBA. Look into these programs: PhD in Business Administration, PhD in quantitative finance, PhD in industrial psychology, PhD in Sociology, PhD in engineering, PhD in economics. I would suggest that getting a PhD in a business school will generally net you much higher wages, although people can do well with a PhD in other areas. We have a torn relationship, as we like to publish academically in these mother fields (ie. economics or sociology), however, the wages are quite a bit lower in you go to those disciplines. Why? The external market does not understand this dynamic. Executive PhD Programs & Executive DBA Programs: Pros and Cons Of These Business Doctorate Programs

15:13
Executive doctoral programs make a tremendous amount of sense to me. One of the disadvantages of doing a PhD is that you are focused on doing research. An MBA generally tends to be more practice orientated. Executive PhD programs and executive DBA programs fit in the middle. What are some advantages of executive PhD and DBA programs? 1. Executive PhD Programs allow you to get a new wants the understanding of the world, and a much more rigorous perspective and then you would get in an MBA program. 2. Executive DBA programs are still quite research intensive, so you’ll get a understanding of what it means to do research and why it is important. 3. Executive PhD programs generally have a much smaller class sizes and you get to interact with the professors. 4. Executive doctoral programs will allow you to apply a lot of the stuff that you learn in your own organization What are some disadvantages of an executive PhD 1. It will be very difficult to get a tenure-track position in a university with such a PhD degree. 2. Some of these executive PhD programs are quite expensive, but you have to see the value from the PhD. 3. Executive DBA programs will be a lot of work, and you have to weigh the sacrifice of getting that degree against your current life. ************** Check out: Intermittent PhDs In Business: Weekend PhD Programs, Part-Time PhD, Online PhDs, & Executive DBAs https://youtu.be/nOlINIk8tNw How To Pay For Graduate School And Living Expenses: Fully Funded PhD Programs In Business https://youtu.be/6LV_SfgV3WY Business PhD vs. Economics PhD: PhD In Business Administration Vs A PhD In Economics? - Thesis Help https://youtu.be/yPV1zJ2nvbo Should You Get A PhD In Business Administration To Become A Consultant Or To Teach Executives? https://youtu.be/MYUabmCkQN4 How To Ask For A Letter Of Recommendation From A Professor - Monday Writes https://youtu.be/DKpKccUP_VU Is A PhD In Business Worth It?
