Flexible Single Master Operations Roles (FSMO)

12:53
Understanding FSMO roles is key to ensuring a stable network infrastructure for your Active Directory. Doug clears up the mystery. Active Directory is "multiple-master". That means that all but the RODCs host a read/write copy of Active Directory. Some services do require that there is a single "master" copy. These are known as Flexible Single Master Operations roles, also known as FSMO. In this excerpt from the Windows Server 2008R2 Administration Epic Live class, Senior Technical Instructor Doug Bassett explains the forest and domain FSMO roles and what can happen if the role goes offline. This is an example of the real-world, online HD certification training done at StormWind.com. The Difference between Authoritative and Non-Authorative Active Directory Restore

04:27
Whoops! You deleted the wrong thing in Active Directory and need to recover. Do you choose an Authoritative or Non-Authorative restore? In this video, Doug Bassett explains the difference. There are two types of systems in the IT industry, those that have failed and those that will fail. There are also two types of administrators, those that have deleted important data and those that will delete important data. In this excerpt of our Windows Server 2008 R2 Administration class, Senior Technical Instructor Doug Bassett explains the type of Active Directory restore you would use in each of these situations. This is an example of the real-world, online HD certification training done at Stormwind.com. DHCP and the DORA Process

08:12
DHCP is vital for handing out IP Addresses. It is important to understand how DHCP uses the DORA process to operate. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is used to automatically assign IP address to client machines. Without DHCP, you would have to go to each machine and manually enter the address. DHCP is broadcast-based, using UDP ports 67 and 68. In this video, Senior Technical Instructor Doug Bassett explains how this process works and saves you TONS of time! This is an example of the real-world, online HD certification training done at StormWind.com. Host Files for Fun and Profit

05:17
DNS is awesome! But what do you do when the resource isn't registered? Also, how can you use host files to block unwanted sites? Doug explains all! The Domain Name System is used to locate resources in your network and on the Internet. DNS matches the Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) to the IP address. But if the record isn't found, you could be out of luck. The Hosts file is a text file that allows you to manually match a name to an IP address. In this video, Senior Technical Instructor Doug Bassett explains how to use the Hosts file to replace DNS for name resolution for "lost" records. He also explains how you can use the Hosts file to block access to unwanted websites. This is an example of the real-world, online HD certification training done at StormWind.com. MCITP vs. MCSE - Certification Deathmatch

06:44
MCITP: Enterprise has been the expert level certification from Microsoft. Now things are changing. In this 6:43 video, Senior Technical Instructor Doug Bassett explains the changes and what it can mean for you! MCITP:Enterprise has been the expert level certification that many use to prove their mastery over a Microsoft enterprise infrastructure. This certification evolved from Microsoft Certified System Engineer, or MCSE. Now Microsoft has announced a "new" certification called Microsoft Certified Solution Expert, also known as MCSE. WHAT? In this video, Doug explains the requirement for obtaining MCITP:Enterprise and how that compares to obtaining the new MCSE and why it is important to bypass all the flame wars and bitterness and examine the change objectively. Creating Answer Files For Windows 7

09:54
Answer files are used to automate the installation of Microsoft Operating Systems. The Windows Automated Installation Kit has really changed how these files are created. Doug demonstrates using the Window System Image Manager to create a Windows 7 Professional Installation answer file. Answer files have been around for a long time. These files allow administrators to deploy new installations of Windows without the need to babysit and answer a ton of questions. The answer file now selects the defined options, but still gives the opportunity for user customization. Windows 7 now uses the Window System Image Manger to create the appropriate answer files. Once you have installed the WAIK, you will go into the Windows System Image Manager and create the configuration set. This configuation set is what makes up the answer file. If you are unfamiliar with the System Image Manger, you are faced with a big GUI and no ability to add the needed settings. This has proved very frustrating to new administrators. In this video, Senior Technical Instructor Doug Bassett shows how to locate the needed WIM files and how to create the new answer files that are needed to automate your deployments. If you want to learn more about answer files and how to ensure proper configuration, optimization and security, we invite you to attend our Windows 7 Epic Live course.
