A Boy Named Moses - the fifth estate

40:10
He was only five years old when his adoptive parents decided they didn't want him anymore … so they gave him away to a complete stranger – on the Internet. In a fifth estate investigation called “A Boy Named Moses,” Gillian Findlay looks at the unregulated practice of what is euphemistically called “rehoming.” “It's a very comforting way of saying trafficking in children,” says Mary Ellen Turpel Lafonde, British Columbia’s Children Advocate. Moses was adopted from an orphanage in Liberia by a couple from British Columbia, but soon they found him too troublesome to keep. They found Internet chat rooms and forums where people, like themselves, posted ads about adoptions gone wrong. They quickly found a willing taker in Texas and Moses’ adoptive father dropped him off at a Houston hotel with a stranger, a woman they had never met in person before. When the authorities discovered what had happened, Moses was eventually returned to British Columbia, but the couple that used Internet to give him away were never charged. The BC Ministry of Child and Family Development refused to discuss the case. Moses is now a thriving and happy 13-year-old, living with a B.C. couple who have taken in many children who have suffered through failed adoptions. “It’s unbelievable anyone could be that inhumane… with a little boy,” says Cathy Gilbert, his new adoptive mother. --- Subscribe for more videos from the fifth estate : http://bit.ly/25W8cpn Connect with the fifth estate online : Website : http://bit.ly/1d0FBxq Facebook : http://bit.ly/1UO9B8S Twitter : http://bit.ly/237VM8P Instagram : http://bit.ly/25W8SLs About the fifth estate : For four decades the fifth estate has been Canada's premier investigative documentary program. Brainwashed: The Secret CIA Experiments in Canada: Patients at a psychiatric hospital in Montreal were subjected to intensive shock treatments, LSD and drug-induced comas in the 1950s and 1960s. The brutal experiments were funded by the Canadian government and the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. The Fifth Estate began investigating the story in 1980 and followed the victims who successfully sued the CIA. Now, as result of our reporting, more and more victims and their families are coming forward. Newly unearthed documents reveal how Ottawa kept files secret, misplaced vital documents – and forced victims to keep compensation agreements confidential. David Corn on Donald Trump and Russia - the fifth estate

12:46
Veteran Mother Jones journalist David Corn broke the story about claims that Donald Trump may have been compromised by the Russians. The allegations were based on a 35-page memo, compiled by a former British Intelligence agent, hired by Trump opponents to find information damaging to his presidential bid. The dossier contains details of alleged co-operation with the Russians as well as Trump’s possible exposure to blackmail because of suspected bugged phone calls or sexual acts recorded in hotel rooms. The allegations have not been substantiated and have been dismissed by both Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Corn broke the story in Mother Jones. His source – now known to be Christopher Steele, the former Russia specialist for Britain’s MI-6 intelligence service. Steele’s unverified report alleges Trump might have been targeted during that 2013 Miss Universe pageant in Moscow. --- Subscribe for more videos from the fifth estate : http://bit.ly/25W8cpn Connect with the fifth estate online : Website : http://bit.ly/1d0FBxq Facebook : http://bit.ly/1UO9B8S Twitter : http://bit.ly/237VM8P Instagram : http://bit.ly/25W8SLs About the fifth estate : For four decades the fifth estate has been Canada's premier investigative documentary program. Driving High: Is the test for weed reliable? - The Fifth Estate

29:25
As Canada prepares for legal pot, the federal government plans to spend as much as $80-million to train 750 police officers to smoke out high drivers. But how sound is the test? A Fifth Estate investigation raises serious questions, showing it can lead to false arrests, is prone to police bias and, according to one scientific expert, is no better at detecting high drivers than “flipping a coin”. For now, there is no roadside test for marijuana like the breathalyzer test for alcohol. So police have to rely on tests based on observations and judgements – and that can sometimes turn out wrong. We’ll show you the test, debate the science behind it and introduce you to Canadians who’ve been suffered because of it - putting the test to the test. We’ll also take you to the United States, where the American Civil Liberties Union is taking the police to court, and pose the question: is Canada headed for a similar legal stand off? --- Subscribe for more videos from The Fifth Estate : http://bit.ly/25W8cpn Connect with The Fifth Estate online : Website : http://bit.ly/1d0FBxq Facebook : http://bit.ly/1UO9B8S Twitter : http://bit.ly/237VM8P Instagram : http://bit.ly/25W8SLs About the fifth estate : For four decades The Fifth Estate has been Canada's premier investigative documentary program. Shafia family murders : House of Shafia (2012) - the fifth estate

45:15
A father, a mother and a brother stand convicted of the first-degree murders of four women found drowned in a submerged car in a Kingston, Ont. canal -- the so-called "honour killing" that has shocked a nation. But so many questions still remain. How were three young women and their stepmother held as virtual captives in their own home in a country that prides itself on protecting women and children? How did police and social workers -- highly trained to recognize vulnerable people in potential danger -- not pick up and act on the warning signs that were so obvious to teachers, relatives and friends? Family and friends break their silence for the first time and reveal what life was like under the iron-fisted rule of a domineering father whose word was law; with a brother who was his eyes, ears and accomplice; and with a mother whose indifference to her daughters' pleas and whose willingness to be a partner in their murders has shocked so many Canadians. With exclusive interviews, we'll hear from those close enough to know what was going on: relatives who feared for the girls' safety; teachers at their school who knew there was trouble at home; and the two young men who dared to have feelings for the Shafia sisters, but who in the end could not save them. --- Subscribe for more videos from the fifth estate : http://bit.ly/25W8cpn Connect with the fifth estate online : Website : http://bit.ly/1d0FBxq Facebook : http://bit.ly/1UO9B8S Twitter : http://bit.ly/237VM8P Instagram : http://bit.ly/25W8SLs About the fifth estate : For four decades the fifth estate has been Canada's premier investigative documentary program. More on The Miner's Daughter : Aluminium dust in mining - The Fifth Estate

10:41
It began on The Fifth Estate in 1979 with Ian Parker's explosive report on McIntyre Powder called "Powder Keg" -- and to this day, Janice Martell is fighting for answers. Her fight began for her father, a former miner who has Parkinson's disease, and has now turned into a nationwide campaign to seek help for miners exposed to the fine aluminum dust called McIntyre Powder. Now, her fight is getting the attention of scientists and researchers across Ontario -- and they say they've found "concerning" links between the incidence rate of ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease and McIntyre Powder. --- Subscribe for more videos from The Fifth Estate : http://bit.ly/25W8cpn Connect with The Fifth Estate online : Website : http://bit.ly/1d0FBxq Facebook : http://bit.ly/1UO9B8S Twitter : http://bit.ly/237VM8P Instagram : http://bit.ly/25W8SLs About the fifth estate : For four decades The Fifth Estate has been Canada's premier investigative documentary program. The Muskoka Murder Files - The Fifth Estate

18:33
Secret police documents reveal new details and shed light on what police believe may have happened to four elderly people who mysteriously vanished two decades ago from a secluded part of Ontario's cottage country north of Toronto. Police spent years searching for bodies, clues and answers, but none of the four have been seen since, none of their bodies ever found. They are still missing -- presumed murdered -- and still no one has been held accountable for their disappearance. In an update to a joint investigation which first aired last September, The Fifth Estate and The Walrus magazine have obtained more pages from long-secret police documents. They offer details about a potential murder weapon, revelations about the abysmal living conditions in so-called "retirement homes" the four were living in -- and a money trail that leads back to one local family. --- Subscribe for more videos from The Fifth Estate : http://bit.ly/25W8cpn Connect with The Fifth Estate online : Website : http://bit.ly/1d0FBxq Facebook : http://bit.ly/1UO9B8S Twitter : http://bit.ly/237VM8P Instagram : http://bit.ly/25W8SLs About the fifth estate : For four decades The Fifth Estate has been Canada's premier investigative documentary program. Secret audio tapes and an exclusive television interview with an industry whistleblower reveal a shady practice that is industry-wide. A Fifth Estate investigation shows how Costco pressed one generic drug company for illegal payments to stock their products -- undermining government attempts to protect consumers. Two Costo executives pleaded guilty to professional misconduct in front of the Ontario College of Pharmacists and the company says it suspended the practices upon conclusion of its own internal investigation. Costco says it didn’t use the funds to “line our pockets” but on the contrary the payments “are used to defray our operating costs to allow us to pass the savings on to our customers.” Hear the secret audio tapes for the first time and meet the man who blew the whistle. The Unrepentant : Russell Williams, Karla Homolka and more - the fifth estate

41:35
They are marked by their ability to kill without passion and without remorse. Some are called psychopaths - a term that evokes nightmare images of murderers and monsters. But the label can also apply to men and women who are successful, intelligent, charismatic, charming and amusing - and so all the more dangerous. Linden MacIntyre looks at what makes a psychopath through the fifth estate's close encounters with of four of Canada's most frightening criminals. the fifth estate begins with "Lightning" Lee, a former kick-boxer who brutally victimized women and children who was described as a "textbook psychopath." The other criminals MacIntyre takes on didn't outwardly seem to be the type - the respected commander of an air force base, Russell Williams; and Karla Homolka, who convinced police and a psychiatrist she was a victim, even though she helped her husband assault and kill young girls, including her own younger sister. Finally, MacIntyre revisits the harrowing story of two teenaged friends, Atif Rafay and Sebastian Burns, who conspired to murder one of their families and were caught in a controversial RCMP sting. They are all disordered personalities, whose lack of empathy and shame inspires both fear and fascination. --- Subscribe for more videos from the fifth estate : http://bit.ly/25W8cpn Connect with the fifth estate online : Website : http://bit.ly/1d0FBxq Facebook : http://bit.ly/1UO9B8S Twitter : http://bit.ly/237VM8P Instagram : http://bit.ly/25W8SLs About the fifth estate : For four decades the fifth estate has been Canada's premier investigative documentary program. Before his career at the CBC, Bob was a Grey Cup champion offensive lineman with the Ottawa Rough Riders in the 1970s. In an era when concussions weren’t talked about, Bob recounts sustaining several of them during his career. One so punishing that after a game he threw up all night and had a blinding headache for a week. But he, like all then other players back then, never told the doctors or trainers. Bob tells the stories of his former teammates who are suffering from Alzheimer’s or who passed away after years of battling dementia. Meanwhile, the CFL has offered no support or compensation to past players who are suffering from degenerative brain diseases. Which leads Bob himself to wonder, what does the future hold for his own health? While Bob awaits his fate, he decides to make his own contribution to future science by signing up to donate his brain after his death to a concussion research clinic that is studying Canadian football players. --- Subscribe for more videos from the fifth estate : http://bit.ly/25W8cpn Connect with the fifth estate online : Website : http://bit.ly/1d0FBxq Facebook : http://bit.ly/1UO9B8S Twitter : http://bit.ly/237VM8P Instagram : http://bit.ly/25W8SLs About the fifth estate : For four decades the fifth estate has been Canada's premier investigative documentary program. Murder in the Village: Bruce McArthur and the Mysterious Deaths in the 1970s - The Fifth Estate

19:53
In early 2018 Bruce McArthur was charged with six counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of missing men from Toronto's gay village, the news of an alleged serial killer shocked a community, a city and a country. But the case is far from closed and as the police continue their investigation, the death toll is expected to rise. The allegations are that McArthur spent years masterfully covering his tracks. McArthur denies all the accusations. The police are also looking as far back as the 1970s when McArthur was a young man in his twenties, working in downtown Toronto. Then, as now, death stalked the village. Then, as now, tensions and distrust between police and the gay community hampered the investigation. The Fifth Estate uncovers the stories of men from Toronto’s gay community who were brutally killed over four decades ago. Many of those cases are still unsolved – cold cases that are now being re-opened. --- Subscribe for more videos from The Fifth Estate : http://bit.ly/25W8cpn Connect with The Fifth Estate online : Website : http://bit.ly/1d0FBxq Facebook : http://bit.ly/1UO9B8S Twitter : http://bit.ly/237VM8P Instagram : http://bit.ly/25W8SLs About the fifth estate : For four decades The Fifth Estate has been Canada's premier investigative documentary program. Dellen Millard, convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Tim Bosma, is facing two additional first-degree murder charges in the deaths of his ex-girlfriend Laura Babcock and his father Wayne Millard. Journalist Ann Brocklehurst, the author of a recent book on the Bosma murder titled "Dark Ambition," says there are legitimate questions to be raised about how Toronto police dealt with the investigations into Laura Babcock's disappearance and Wayne Millard's death. The JFK Files : The Murder of a President - The Fifth Estate

More than five decades after the assassination of John F. Kennedy in November, 1963, for many people there remain troubling questions about the official story: Was Lee Harvey Oswald the killer? Did he act alone or was it a conspiracy? Now, thousands of once-secret classified documents about the Kennedy assassination have finally been made public. Can those recently-released records explain the inexplicable -- and what’s in the thousands of assassination records they still refuse to release? When The Fifth Estate first broadcast its investigation into the JFK assassination back in 1983, it was the most watched show in the program’s history. Now Bob McKeown updates that story, with new interviews with some of the leading investigators of the JFK mystery: what did they find in those files, and what questions do they still have? --- Subscribe for more videos from The Fifth Estate : http://bit.ly/25W8cpn Connect with The Fifth Estate online : Website : http://bit.ly/1d0FBxq Facebook : http://bit.ly/1UO9B8S Twitter : http://bit.ly/237VM8P Instagram : http://bit.ly/25W8SLs About the fifth estate : For four decades The Fifth Estate has been Canada's premier investigative documentary program. Denis Ratté & Wendy Ratté : The Vanishing - the fifth estate

41:56
For Anna Ratté, growing up just outside Prince George, British Columbia was an idyllic childhood. Her parents were an unusual couple - her father, Denis Ratté, was a rough-hewn French Canadian labourer while her mother Wendy was a free spirit from a well-to-do New England family - but they made a loving, stable home for their two children, Anna and Gabriel. But on August 18, 1997, that family was torn apart when Wendy Ratté suddenly vanished. Days and then months passed, with no word from her. Seventeen-year-old Anna Ratté began a long, difficult search for answers, and she learned more about her mother's secret past. It seemed Wendy had left her own family as a teenager, lived in the New Hampshire woods, and wrote indecipherable letters signed 'Shanna' - a wild, spiritual personality who would become her alter ego. Anna had to face the question: was Wendy dead, or had her mother simply decided to leave her family? It was years before Anna began to suspect that her father Denis was not telling her everything he knew. In 2008, the RCMP took another look at Wendy's case, and launched an undercover sting to convince Denis - now eating at soup kitchens - that he could join a gang and get rich, as long as he came clean about his past crimes. What happened next would shatter Anna's world and send a man to prison. the fifth estate has obtained police video from that trial that will be broadcast for the first time in The Vanishing. --- Subscribe for more videos from the fifth estate : http://bit.ly/25W8cpn Connect with the fifth estate online : Website : http://bit.ly/1d0FBxq Facebook : http://bit.ly/1UO9B8S Twitter : http://bit.ly/237VM8P Instagram : http://bit.ly/25W8SLs About the fifth estate : For four decades the fifth estate has been Canada's premier investigative documentary program. Bus 1170 : Vince Li and the Greyhound Bus Murder (2011) - the fifth estate

41:05
A seemingly random decision, to take the Greyhound from B.C. to Winnipeg rather than a friend’s offer of a plane ticket, would cost 22-year-old Tim McLean his life and profoundly change the lives of those who witnessed his murder. On Greyhound 1170, Vincent Li, a diagnosed schizophrenic on his own randomly chosen bus journey, sat beside McLean and then, obeying voices inside his head, repeatedly stabbed and then cannibalized McLean’s body. The Fifth Estate recounts the story from the perspective of two of the surviving passengers, a truck driver who stopped to help, forensic psychiatrist Dr. Stanley Yaren, and Tim McLean's family. His father, stepmother and mother struggle to understand why the RCMP stood outside Bus 1170 for five hours, as Li cut up their son’s body, before intervening. The Pour Update : Treating Alcoholics with Wine - The Fifth Estate

16:13
It starts at 7:30 a.m. and ends at 9:30 p.m. It’s called “the pour” -- an hourly dose of wine that’s given to chronic alcoholics. It’s a bold move, but still a controversial way to deal with alcoholism. It’s known as the Managed Alcohol Program, and Ottawa is one of eight cities across Canada that has adopted the program. Mark Kelley first visited the Oaks a year ago -- a former hotel that is now home to about 50 residents who are given a new chance at life: a permanent home, health care they desperately need, food, friendship and, of course, alcohol. On this journey, we catch up with some residents to see where they're at now: Jimmy, whose story went viral when we told it last December with 2.5 million views on Facebook; an Inuit artist who has found new hope; and the doctor behind it all who now plans to devote even more time to the program. Alcohol doesn’t discriminate -- it can devastate the lives of the poor and the privileged. Ottawa’s program is winning the attention of doctors, politicians and treatment centres across the country -- and around the world. The same question remains across borders: whether the drink that has destroyed so many lives could now help save them. --- Subscribe for more videos from The Fifth Estate : http://bit.ly/25W8cpn Connect with The Fifth Estate online : Website : http://bit.ly/1d0FBxq Facebook : http://bit.ly/1UO9B8S Twitter : http://bit.ly/237VM8P Instagram : http://bit.ly/25W8SLs About the fifth estate : For four decades The Fifth Estate has been Canada's premier investigative documentary program. It started with a patriarch named Abe Harms, who fled Ontario after being busted for marijuana smuggling and set up a drug-running operation in Mexico. But when his son Enrique took over the family crime business, they graduated to moving massive amounts of cocaine across the border. That caught the eye of American drug investigators. U.S. authorities carried out large-scale undercover operations and drug busts -- and now Enrique is a man on the run. Gambling on Addiction : How Governments Rely on Problem Gamblers - The Fifth Estate

24:18
When it comes to gambling, Canadians have plenty of skin in the game. Last year, we spent about $13 billion on legal, government-run gambling. That's more than we spend on movies, hockey tickets, and Tim Horton’s -- combined. Everybody knows that provincial governments in Canada love those gambling revenues, but the dirty little secret is just how much government casinos rely on problem gamblers to fill government coffers. Experts say that as much as 50% of that gambling revenue comes from problem gamblers. So who here is the real addict? Are provincial governments in Canada actually preying on gamblers? Despite promoting responsible gambling, a new investigation by The Fifth Estate reveals how government programs are failing to keep addicts out of their casinos, while reaping a windfall from those who make it in. --- Subscribe for more videos from The Fifth Estate : http://bit.ly/25W8cpn Connect with The Fifth Estate online : Website : http://bit.ly/1d0FBxq Facebook : http://bit.ly/1UO9B8S Twitter : http://bit.ly/237VM8P Instagram : http://bit.ly/25W8SLs About the fifth estate : For four decades The Fifth Estate has been Canada's premier investigative documentary program. Lottery fraud : Lucky 7 - the fifth estate

40:30
Someone collected a huge lottery prize that really belonged to someone else. From 2012, Linden MacIntyre brings you the climax of a story the fifth estate first told you in 2006 when we discovered that some lottery ticket buyers had their winnings cashed in by crooked shopkeepers. As the fifth estate investigation revealed, one particular insider lottery jackpot looked especially fishy. It was a family that claimed a huge $12.5 million jackpot in 2004 with a ticket issued in their store. After police charged three members of the family with fraud and money laundering, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) was swamped with calls from people claiming to be the rightful owners of that winning ticket. It would take a dying woman's intuition and the OLG seven years to find the true winners of that lottery jackpot. How it happened is a true-life drama full of strange twists, false claims, counter-claims, court battles and a nifty new computer program that can meticulously track the habits of people who play the lottery game. OLG investigators reveal to the fifth estate how they found them, and the lucky seven ordinary guys who suddenly struck it rich speak publicly for the first time since their win. --- Subscribe for more videos from the fifth estate : http://bit.ly/25W8cpn Connect with the fifth estate online : Website : http://bit.ly/1d0FBxq Facebook : http://bit.ly/1UO9B8S Twitter : http://bit.ly/237VM8P Instagram : http://bit.ly/25W8SLs About the fifth estate : For four decades the fifth estate has been Canada's premier investigative documentary program. Melissa Ann Shepard : Internet Black Widow (2012) - the fifth estate

42:28
Family members say she preyed on the lonely, then married and buried them. Now the so-called Black Widow has been charged with attempted murder after the the suspicious sudden illness of another husband. the fifth estate's Linden MacIntyre first spoke to Melissa Ann Shepard, then Melissa Friedrich when she was in jail in Florida, and then again on the phone last year after she moved back to Nova Scotia. In this 2012 doc, MacIntyre tells her troubling story, with exclusive interviews and details on the latest twists and turns in an unfolding mystery the fifth estate has been following since 2005. Alexander Strategos did what any lonely 73-year-old retiree in Florida looking for love would do -- he logged on to a seniors' website and made a date. The 69-year-old brunette from Canada who answered his call arrived in a new white Cadillac and quickly made herself at home in his condo. Over the next two months, police believe Melissa Ann Friedrich drugged Strategos, took control of his home, stole his life savings and was already searching for her next victim on Internet dating sites. the fifth estate's Linden MacIntyre investigated Sheppard 's remarkable and complex story, including a lengthy and dramatic interview with her in prison. After police arrested Sheppard on charges of exploitation of the elderly, they learned she had at least 13 aliases and at least 30 prior convictions for various kinds of fraud dating back to 1970. They also learned that she was convicted of manslaughter in 1992 after running over, not once but twice, her 44-year-old husband on a dirt road near the Halifax airport. Another husband died in 2002, and while Friedrich was not charged, to this day family members suspect her in his death. And in March 2005, Sheppard was convicted on seven charges of theft and forgery. She was released from prison in Florida in 2009, and until this 2012, had apparently been living a quiet life for three years. Shepard left prison in 2016 after serving an 3.5 year sentence for administering a noxious substance and failing to provide the necessaries of life to Fred Weeks, who was her newlywed husband. Stephen Reid : My Friend the Bank Robber (2011) - the fifth estate

41:38
"I've known Stephen Reid since we were both in our early 20s... Our lives have intersected many times since then. In a way, his story is also mine." In a particularly personal broadcast, the fifth estate's Bob McKeown traces the career of, and his friendship with, the always fascinating, charismatic, and confounding Stephen Reid. For decades, Stephen Reid has captured the imagination of Canadians — an outlaw bandit who robbed banks with stopwatch precision, a fast-talking charmer, and master of disguises who twice escaped prison, a reformed convict and accomplished best-selling author, nad a loving father and husband. It seemed Stephen Reid's story might have a Hollywood ending. But real life isn't so kind. The master of the quick get away, Reid couldn't escape the life everyone thought he'd left behind. Canada's most famous bank robber is now back on the inside, serving out an 18-year sentence and searching for redemption behind bars. During a crime spree that spanned decades, Reid and his cohorts earned their name from the stopwatch he wore around his neck as they robbed banks all across North America. Among the Stopwatch Gang's notorious scores were the biggest Canadian gold robbery ever, the biggest bank job in San Diego history ($283,000 US) and about 100 other bank jobs from Seattle to Miami to Montreal, bagging some $15 million. Over this same stretch of time an unlikely friendship developed between Reid, the professional thief, and Bob McKeown, longtime correspondent with the fifth estate. In the years before he became a journalist and played with the CFL, McKeown used to share beers with Reid at Ottawa's famed Prescott Tavern. It was McKeown who first brought viewers the story of Canada's answer to “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”. It was McKeown who shared occasional dinners with his old friend during those many years Reid was writing and raising his family with his wife, celebrated poet Susan Musgrave. And it's McKeown who now brings us face-to-face with Reid, and reveals, for the first time the secret that poisoned his childhood and launched a lifelong struggle with addiction. Cross Lake: “This Is Where I Live” - The Fifth Estate

58:58
Last winter, five young people killed themselves in the northern Indigenous community of Cross Lake, Manitoba. In the weeks that followed 140 more attempted suicide. Cross Lake declared a state of emergency. The Fifth Estate went to Cross Lake to find out why and spent nine months there, talking to people, filming -- and giving young people their own cameras to tell their stories. We arrived expecting darkness but we also found plenty of hope and struggle. Young people let us into their lives and opened up about their fears, their concerns about their parents, their desire to protect their siblings. They shared their dreams about finding a new life -- whether through sports, music or romance … and even by becoming young parents. And we met the adults struggling to help them -- a dedicated principal trying to keep her students safe and a determined Chief fighting for a better future for her people. Come meet the people of Cross Lake and take a journey you won’t soon forget. --- Subscribe for more videos from The Fifth Estate : http://bit.ly/25W8cpn Connect with The Fifth Estate online : Website : http://bit.ly/1d0FBxq Facebook : http://bit.ly/1UO9B8S Twitter : http://bit.ly/237VM8P Instagram : http://bit.ly/25W8SLs About the fifth estate : For four decades The Fifth Estate has been Canada's premier investigative documentary program. Mount Everest : Into the Death Zone - the fifth estate

But in the hours that followed, things would go dreadfully wrong and she would perish, like hundreds before her, high up in Everest's "Death Zone." Since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's first ascent of Everest almost 60 years ago, it has been an irresistible fascination for aspiring mountaineers. Hundreds make the attempt every year, and many don't make it. This year was no exception as hundreds made their way to the summit even as worrying signs pointed to trouble. Among them was Shriya Shah-Klorfine, the cheerful and energetic Torontonian. She had never climbed a mountain before, and despite warnings from her friends, husband, and seasoned Everest sherpas, she was climbing the world's highest peak, determined to succeed. In this 2012 documentary, Bob McKeown travels to Nepal and pieces together what happened with exclusive never-before-seen video of Shah-Klorfine's final hours on Everest. the fifth estate uncovers startling information about her deadly climb into the icy oxygen-thin expanse of Everest known as the Death Zone. --- Subscribe for more videos from the fifth estate : http://bit.ly/25W8cpn Connect with the fifth estate online : Website : http://bit.ly/1d0FBxq Facebook : http://bit.ly/1UO9B8S Twitter : http://bit.ly/237VM8P Instagram : http://bit.ly/25W8SLs About the fifth estate : For four decades the fifth estate has been Canada's premier investigative documentary program. It seemed so perfect, so scientific - a hair test that could objectively determine whether parents of young children were abusing drugs or alcohol. But it turns out the 'Motherisk' hair testing was flawed, and improperly administered all across Canada over twenty years. The results were devastating. Families broken up, children seized and irrevocably adopted out. The Fifth Estate tracked down parents who share stories for the first time on Tainted Tests: Broken Families. Mark Kelley reports.
