Epidemiology the backbone of public health

05:53
Epidemiology underpins everything we do in public health and global health. Epidemiology is more than just research methods and qualitative and quantitative study design. Its about understanding the distribution of states of health and the exposures that cause them. And its about causation. Epidemiology is about population health, outbreaks, pandemics, epidemics. And of course its includes non-communicable diseases too. This channel posts global health and public health teaching videos and videos about how to find the right job in global health. What is public health?

05:41
In this video, Dr Greg Martin takes a look at the question, "what is public heath?" and also considers what it is that public health professionals do including research and surveillance and actions to prevent disease and improve access to care and treatment. This is a useful video for people wanting to work in public health. If you're considering a career in public health and want to know a little more about what a job in public health might look like, then take a look... -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Know how interpret an epidemic curve?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SM4PN7Yg1s -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-
Know how to interpret an epidemic curve?

07:39
Epidemic curves are a visual representation of the onset of cases in an outbreak. In this video Dr Greg Martin explains how to interpret and epidemic curve for point source outbreaks, common source outbreaks and propagated outbreaks. Epidemiologists and public health professionals use epi-curves (or epidemic / epidemiological) curves to better understand infectious disease outbreaks. This video was created with support from the University of Notre Dame. Find out more about their program here: http://ntrda.me/2btUrXb If you're interested in epidemiology then consider watching the epidemiology playlist on this channel, here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLujS9ooBebKWlbmIQOtYaJBjKE4VSimXJ
Health Systems

07:20
The public health and global health community talk about strengthening health systems. In this video, Dr Greg Martin provides a brief overview of what health systems are and how it is that the building blocks of health systems fit together. Health systems are made up of 1) leadership, management and governance, 2) health finance, 3) human resources, 4) inventory, 5) infrastructure and 6) health intelligence. If the public health community is going to make improvements to health systems in poorer countries then we need to have a clear understanding of what they are. To improve health systems we need to apply what we understand about epidemiology and health economics to national programmes. Epidemiological transition

06:41
Epidemiological transition is the changing patterns of disease (and causes of death) seen in human history. Those of us interested in public health and global health need to understand that this process isn’t over. The epidemiology of non-communicable disease and infectious disease is still changing. In this video, we look at some of the challenges faced by developing countries in terms of the double burden of disease and the difficulties associated with managing non-communicable disease. We also look at the future and the likely return of high rates of infectious disease globally. This video was sponsored by the University of Edinburgh. How to write a scientific paper

08:34
Do you want to write and publish an academic or scientific paper? To get a paper published in a peer-reviewed journal is not difficult. This video will provide you with insights into what to include in each section of the paper and talk you through some of the best practices for writing. This video deals mostly with how to write up the results of quantitative research. The principles, however, apply to qualitative research too (with slightly different content in the methods section). You’ve done a study, you’ve collected and analysed the data. Now it’s time to write it up and get it published. Health Economics

05:26
Global health and public health practitioners use Health Economics to better understand the decisions that get made that affect health. Calculating the DALYs averted or QALYs gained for per dollar spent, for example, can help NGOs and Governments decide which health interventions to invest in. These sorts of cost utility and cost effectiveness (economic evaluations) help with decision making. Support for the creation of this video came from DCP3. mHealth - what is it?

03:40
This is part of a series of 3 videos that were made by Master of Public Health students at Wright State University Master of Public Health Program, Boonshoft School of Medicine, Dayton, Ohio, USA. This video was also entered into #khanacademytalentsearch. Did you know that cellphones have the capacity to improve our health? mHealth: What is it? How is it working around the world? What challenges does it face? This 1st video is about what is mHealth, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO). The 2nd video looks at how mHealth is working around the world. youtube.com/watch?v=Q9lPFXz5AMY The 3rd video is about the challenges mHealth faces and how they are being overcome .https://youtu.be/ruG28Q9MAZ0 mHealth – What is it? “mHealth” or Mobile Health is part of electronic health or “eHealth,” and is the use of handheld electronic devices, such as cell phones and tablets, used to communicate between healthcare providers, public health, and individuals. This first video discusses the World Health Organization’s 6 initiatives for mHealth, including use in public health emergencies, such as the Ebola outbreak in Nigeria, and medication reminders, such as SIMpill. It also reviews the Gates Foundation’s funding of low-cost existing technology for public health concerns, such as vaccinations. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Know how interpret an epidemic curve?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SM4PN7Yg1s -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-
R programming for beginners – statistic with R (t-test and linear regression) and dplyr and ggplot

The social determinants of health represent aspects of people’s social identity, their social environment and their social position that can health and public health. It’s a broad topic and includes issues like justice, inequality, health inequity, poverty and human rights. The WHO states that, “The social determinants of health (SDH) are the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life. These forces and systems include economic policies and systems, development agendas, social norms, social policies and political systems. The SDH network across WHO supports action on the SDH. Pandemics - a worrying global public health threat

08:14
Pandemics are one of the greatest existential threats facing humanity today. Over the last few centuries, we've seen outbreaks and epidemics kill millions of people. From plague in the 14th century to influenza in the 20th century, infectious disease has been able to ravage society again and again. More recently, we've seen MERS-Co-V, SARS, Ebola, Zika and others viruses spreading across the world. The public health and global health measures that need to be put in place are rather obvious and yet these things are not being done on the scale that is required. Locally we need outbreak control measures that can engage with the epidemiology of zoonotic infections while at an international health level, we need countries to work with the World Health Organisation with the International Health Regulations (IHR). This video was sponsored by DCP3 (www.dcp-3.org). Go to their webpage to find out more. If you're interested in pandemics, you can see their pandemic chapter here: http://dcp-3.org/chapter/2601/pandemics-risks-mitigation-and-costs If you're interested in outbreak control and investigation, here is a video that I've created about that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xqoaGhxrIfY This channel posts global health and public health teaching videos and videos about how to find the right job in global health. mHealth challenges video #3

03:29
This is the third of a series of 3 videos that were made by Master of Public Health students at Wright State University Master of Public Health Program, Boonshoft School of Medicine, Dayton, Ohio, USA. Did you know that cellphones have the capacity to improve our health? mHealth: What is it? How is it working around the world? What challenges does it face? The 1st video is about what is mHealth, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO). (https://youtu.be/A5hSs8yTXvc) This 2nd video looks at how mHealth is working around the world. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9lPFXz5AMY) The 3rd video is about the challenges mHealth faces and how they are being overcome. mHealth initiatives are working with older models of cell phones due to the lack of reliable internet and electricity that hinder the use of smartphones. However, there are initiatives to develop smartphones that are cheap and use less electricity. Often mHealth applications cannot share information, so more integration is needed within and across health systems. All the information collected by mHealth has the potential of being analyzed as “big data” to improve health. Cheaper and more accessible cell phones are needed to improve population health around the world. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Know how interpret an epidemic curve?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SM4PN7Yg1s -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-
HIV - an exceptional epidemic? An interview with Prof Alan Whiteside

02:44
Is the HIV / AIDS epidemic exceptional? Should the global health response be differentiated from mainstream health interventions? Dr Greg Martin interview Prof Alan Whiteside who talks about a paper that he published in Globalization and Health that addresses this very question. Global health (and public health) is truly multidisciplinary and leans on epidemiology, health economics, health policy, statistics, ethics, demography.... the list goes on and on. This YouTube channel is here to provide you with some teaching and information on these topics. I've also posted some videos on how to find work in the global health space and how to raise money or get a grant for your projects. Please feel free to leave comments and questions - I'll respond to all of them (we'll, I'll try to at least). Feel free to make suggestions as to future content for the channel. How to write a literature review

09:21
How to write a literature review. It’s easier than you might think! In this video, I demonstrate how to search the literature and identify relevant papers for your literature review. I do a pubmed search using Boolean operators and MeSH terms (these are extremely powerful tools that will help you sift through the large number of academic papers out there). So if you’re doing a master’s thesis or a PhD, or you’re doing research and writing a paper, at some point, you’ll need to do a lit review. A big part of that review is the search and this video is going to help you get that right. You might be doing a systematic literature review or meta-analysis – again, you’ll need to do a good PubMed search that identifies the right studies. Thanks to BMC !!! ----------------------------- This video was sponsored by BMC – (click here to go to BMC: https://goo.gl/RFaUA2 ). As a pioneer of open access publishing, BMC has an evolving portfolio of high-quality peer-reviewed journals including broad interest titles such as BMC Biology and BMC Medicine, specialist journals such as Malaria Journal and Microbiome, and the BMC series. BMC is committed to continual innovation to better support the needs of research communities, ensuring the integrity of the research we publish, and championing the benefits of open research. BMC is part of Springer Nature, giving us greater opportunities to help authors connect and advance discoveries across the world. I’m particularly excited about having BMC’s support because I’ve been working with them for nearly 15 years as the Editor-in-Chief of the journal Globalization and Health. I’ve been extremely impressed by them as a company that has integrity and that is truly making the world a better place. LEARN MORE about literature reviews ------------------------------------------------------------ Of course, there is more to a literature review than just the search. You need to have a structured approach to selecting paper, extracting data, writing the review itself and creating a bibliography. For more detail on these aspects of a literature review, go to www.learnmore365.com where I have a full course on literature review (it takes about 30 minutes to complete). Gender-Based Violence and Violence Against Women - a public health issue

04:08
In this video, we look at gender-based violence (and violence against women, including domestic violence and rape) and take a look at what we as individuals and as a society can do to address the problem. Things like promoting gender equity and equality, ensuring that our political representatives have values that include protecting the rights of women, and being visible and vocal in our support of women.
