Living Land - Episode 6: Improving Livestock health

24:03
Livestock production is vital to farmers living on large tracts of communal land in our country. However, adverse climatic conditions, a lack of adequate infrastructure and outdated farming methods can seriously hamper their progress. These constraints directly affect the quality of the animals and the livelihoods of entire communities. Communal livestock farming is one of the world’s oldest farming systems and in South Africa between 17 and 20 million people live on communal land. In this episode, the Living Land team visits various outposts across the country where livestock improvement initiatives are being implemented. Producing healthy animals on communal land is often severely constrained by the prevalence of a variety of diseases. Sturdy, well-built crushing pens and dipping tanks enable the farmers to effectively inspect, prevent, diagnose and treat their livestock to improve productivity. The actual benefit of these improvements becomes evident when the crew experiences a live cattle auction and happy farmers earn good money for their animals.

23:58
In this episode Living Land takes a long, hard look at land reform. To date land redistribution and especially new farm projects have had a disappointingly low success rate. We unveil some of the reasons for this trend as we spend time with a successful new farmer in Mpumalanga. Jeremiah Mathebula from Klipplaatdrif in the Amersfoort district uses about a third of his land for growing crops and the rest is reserved for grazing his herd of 600 cattle.
