Deptford

 

Defining Attributes

Square and linear check stamped finishes on compact, well made sand tempered bodies.

 

Age

Generally accepted to be 500BC to 500AD, though carbon dates associated with the ware in South Carolina range from 857BC to 591AD (Calib 5.1 applied, median).

 

Distribution

Throughout the Coastal Plain, but not far into North Carolina. Seen as Yadkin Check there, Cartersville in Georgia, and a variety of local types as far west as Louisiana (link).

 

Description

Paste/Temper

Varies locally, but almost always includes sand. This ranges from an almost temperless fine sand to very coarse and granular sizes. Bodies tend to be compact and relatively hard.

Plain, check stamped, simple stamped
