Ghost Town 4: Cyprus
Ghosts have occupied the town for 40 years, but the displaced families of Famagusta could return to their homes if the politicians learnt how to use the gas rents beneath the sea to unite the Greek and Turkish communities, argues Fred Harrison.

Cyprus. : Bank Has Stolen My Money
Thousands of customers are expected to visit banks in Cyprus as they open their doors for the first time in almost a fortnight. Queues grew outside branches across the country, but there were no signs of panic as employees served customers from midday local time. Cash withdrawals and other transactions are subject to tough restrictions, introduced by the country's Finance Ministry in an effort to avoid a run on the bank. The country's crippled banking system was effectively closed down on March 16 while the terms of the controversial 10bn euro (£8.5bn) bailout were agreed and implemented. Large depositors face losses of as much as 40% of their savings as part of the deal, leading to fears that customers would attempt to withdraw large amounts of money when the banks reopened. As a result, strict capital controls include a withdrawal limit of 300 euros (£253) a day and a ban on cashing cheques. Travellers leaving the country can only take up to 1,000 euros (£845), or the equivalent in foreign currency, with them in cash - significantly less than expected. Police and security staff were deployed to maintain order at branches, and G4S employees worked to ensure cash machines were filled up overnight. The giant global firm was the contractor that failed to meet their promises over security at the London Olympics prompting the British military to step in. G4S's managing director in Cyprus, John Arghyrou, told Sky News: "I feel we have the resources, I feel extremely confident as a security company that we can undertake and meet the requirements of our customers." Some 180 guards were deployed to banks across Cyprus to work alongside police officers and other security firms. Mr Arghyrou added: "It is not really guarding it is assistance services ... but close co-operation with the police is essential." With just 860,000 people, Cyprus has around 68bn euros (£57bn) in its banks. This outsized financial system attracted deposits from foreigners but has struggled since investments in neighbouring Greece went sour.

7 Facts about Cyprus
The weather in Cyprus is paradise-like and Nicosia remains the only capital divided between 2 nations. Plan your holidays to Cyprus, because you’ll have plenty of things to do there. Learn, Share, Subscribe ------------------------------------------------ Watch the entire series here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLbZJ71IJGFRTa_XMM9a4hDh2Yo9CsZzOR Follow: https://plus.google.com/+blinder00 https://twitter.com/Sebastian2Go https://www.facebook.com/official7facts ------------------------------------------------ In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Cyprus, the most Eastern island in the Mediteranean. The country is a member of the European Union and is mainly a European culture, although the map of Cyprus is divided between Turkish occupied Northern Cyprus and Greek Cyprus. More information about the video content bellow: 1. The Cypriot dessert wine commandaria is recognized as the world's oldest named wine. Knight crusaders have named it in the 13th century, but it may have been made for 5,000 years. King Richard the Lionheart of England called it "the wine of kings and the king of wines" at his wedding. 2. In 2004, archaeologists found the remains of a person buried with a cat at a Neolithic archeological site in Cyprus. Dating back about 9,500 years, this is the oldest known pet cat, predating Egyptian civilization and pushing back the earliest known feline-human association significantly. 3. Since 1974 Northern Cyprus has been declared a separate state under Turkish control. The “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” is ruled by the Turks, but this title is only recognized by Turkey itself. Not only is the island of Cyprus largely divided so is the capital city of Nicosia, which lies separated by “The Green Line” akin to the manner in which Berlin was once divided into East and West Germany. It is now the only capital in the world to be divided between two ‘nations’. 4.Cyprus lies in the midst of several Middle Eastern nations—including Syria, Lebanon, and Israel. But its closest country in proximity is Turkey to the south. This unique location has set up the island of Cyprus as a neutral crossroads for many diplomatic proceedings throughout history. 5. Human presence is first recorded on the island in the 10th millennium BC. Groups of people from the Asian mainland visited the island for short periods of time in order to hunt the pygmy hippos.By the 9th millennium BC sedentary communities are settled in Cyprus. 6. Perfume originated from Cyprus. Aphrodite must have smelled pretty good if the 4000 year old traces of perfume found by archeologists in Pyrgos are anything to go by. The perfumes were discovered in alabaster bottles within an enormous underground cave. Archeologists believe they were produced on an industrial scale. 7. The pine forests of the Troodos and the Kyrenia mountains owe their existence to none other than Winston Churchill. As a junior minister in the early 1900's, he ordered a re-afforestation programme to replace the famous forests of centuries gone by, systematically eroded by centuries of felling to build ships and provide fuel for smelting. The island's forests now provide a tranquil haven from the searing heat of summer. My Top 5 Countries to Live in Overseas as an Expat Traveler
If you've been following my videos, you'll know I taught English abroad for 15 years and decided it was time to punch out. I do a lot of traveling now and I was recently asked what my top 5 favorite places to live overseas are. Please note that these are not major ESL teacher countries. I go through them in no particular order and discuss a few things that appeal to me in terms of looking for the ideal destination. What's important to one person may not be important to others... but these are what I base my criteria on. Most of my favorites are in Latin America. One thing I failed to mention in the video is that I really like Latin America because I get zero jet lag when traveling, I am in the same/similar time zone for business phone calls, and it is easy/cheap to get back to the States in a pinch the same day. *********** 🥇COACHING/MANUAL/RESUME SERVICE ▶︎http://www.benteachesenglishoverseas.com 📕 FREE BOOKLET "The Big 6" ▶︎http://www.benteachesenglishoverseas.com/blog 📰 BLOG: http://www.benteachesenglishoverseas.com/blog 🎥 YOUR PERSONALIZED SKYPE CONSULTATION http://www.rockstarESLteacher.com 🔻 FOLLOW ME ON SOCIAL MEDIA🔻 🔵 FACEBOOK | http://facbook.com/benteachesenglishoverseas ✅ INSTAGRAM | http://instagram.com/benteachesenglishoverseas 💙 TWITTER | http://twitter.com/benteachesESL

13 BIGGEST Houses
13 BIGGEST Houses From mansions to palaces to crazy people who got money in ways we don't understand these are the 13 BIGGEST Houses. Antilla is the name of a giant futuristic mansion in Mumbai, India and is the first billion dollar residential home to ever exist. It was commissioned by the world’s fifth richest man Mukesh Ambani, who is the owner of the biggest company in India, Reliance Industries. Mukesh’s 27 story mansion towers above the surrounding apartment high-rises and comes complete with a cinema complex, helipads, a health center, and hanging garden. Hala Ranch is a 95 acre estate just north of Aspen, Colorado in the Rocky mountains. Hala Ranch originally belonged to a Saudi Prince named Bandar bin Sultan before it was purchased by an American hedge fund manager named John Paulson.10 years ago Hala Ranch was the most expensive estate ever listed in the U.S., priced at $135 million dollars in 2006. 135 million seems like a fair price for a 56,000 square foot area that trumps the White House in size. 50 Poplar Hill Drive, in Farmington Connecticut is the address of 50 Cent’s crazy crib. His 51, 567 square foot mansion comes complete with all the amenities any rapper could need: 21 bedrooms, 25 bathrooms, an indoor pool, a gym, a basketball court, a green screen studio, a recording studio, and an underground disco room complete with stripper poles. This pimped out mansion is as lavish as they come but has unfortunately cost 50 cent more than a million and has spiraled him into bankruptcy. The Manor, also known as the Spelling Manor named after its previous owners, now belongs to a British heiress named Petra Ecclestone. The Manor is a 56,500 square foot estate in the posh neighborhood of Holmby Hills, California. Previously the most expensive home in America priced at 125, million dollars, it was sold at the low low price of 85 million to the heiress. The Hearst Estate is a huge property that spans several hundred acres and includes a huge ranch and a herd of zebras. The property is actually made up of one main house and several smaller guest houses. Casa Grande, the main house is 65,000 square feet, with the other houses amassing a total of more than 10,000 square feet. This huge house has seen many celebrity guests and has famously been used as a backdrop in the Godfather films. Although originally a residence for the Hearst family, it was registered as a California State Park in 1957 and has been open for tourists to visit since.

Cyprus: Digging the Past in Search of the Future (documentary)
Thousands of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots were killed during violence and conflict in the 1960s and 1970s - many of them have never been found. In this documentary, Lakhdar Brahimi, Jimmy Carter and Desmond Tutu join four teenagers on the island - two Greek Cypriot and two Turkish Cypriot - to learn about efforts to locate and identify the remains of these victims and return them to their families. Their journey raises difficult questions about the nature of forgiveness, and how communities living side by side deal with past conflict. The film was premiered at special screenings in Nicosia and London and broadcast on Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot television in 2011. The Elders and their young friends, Idil, Tayfun, Thalia and Michael, hope that the documentary will help current and future generations to better understand the painful memories of their families and communities, and that dialogue and understanding may eventually help to heal the wounds of the past. Duration: 38 minutes Download a discussion guide to accompany the film: http://www.theelders.org/docs/cyprus/cyprus-documentary-discussion-guide.pdf

Documentary | The Island of Cyprus - National Geographic
UrbanTV Cyprus Presents - Part of National Geographic's series on "Islands - Cyprus" Find us on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/UrbanIncCY for updated photos and videos from Cyprus! Info - The Cyprus dispute is the result of the ongoing conflict between the Republic of Cyprus and Turkey, over the Turkish occupied northern part of Cyprus.[1] Initially, with the annexation of the island by the British Empire, the "Cyprus dispute" was identified as the conflict between the people of Cyprus and the British Crown regarding the Cypriots' demand for self determination. The dispute however was finally shifted from a colonial dispute to an ethnic dispute between the Turkish and the Greek islanders.[2] The international complications of the dispute stretch far beyond the boundaries of the island of Cyprus itself and involve the guarantor powers (Turkey, Greece, and the United Kingdom alike), along with the United States, the United Nations and the European Union. With Turkey's military action of 1974 (disapproved by UN Security Council Resolution 1974/360),[4] Turkey occupied the northern part of the internationally recognised Republic of Cyprus, and later upon those territories the Turkish Cypriot community unilaterally declared independence forming the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), a sovereign entity that lacks international recognition-with the exception of Turkey with which TRNC enjoys full diplomatic relations. After the two communities and the guarantor countries have committed themselves in finding a peaceful solution over the dispute, the United Nations have since created and maintained a buffer zone (the "Green Line") to avoid any further intercommunal tensions and hostilities. This zone separates the Greek Cypriot-controlled south from the Turkish Cypriot-controlled north. - wiki

Is Renting Always A Waste Of Money?
If you're ready to put down roots for a long time and buy a house you can truly afford, owning has worked out very well for most people. But renting doesn't always mean you're just "throwing your money away". If you're disciplined with your finances, then renting can be a perfectly fine lifestyle choice in the short term without putting you behind financially. It can even make sense over the long term for very financially disciplined individuals. For a more detailed explanation, including a spreadsheet you can download to adjust the variables: http://wheredoesallmymoneygo.com/rent-versus-buy-calculator/ To start to understand when it can make sense, this video helps explain some of the variables that can affect the success of renting (and investing) as well as owning.

Hello, this is my house. Can I come in?
A typical Kypraia visits her home to the occupied part of Cyprus. She suddenly remembers her mother and father are dead, and her grandmother. Typical line: "Hello, this is my house. Can I come in?",, She discusses with the illegal Turkish settlers the possibility that she returns to her home. "What will happen?" she goes crying. Soon, however, as you will see, the Cyprus problem is solved in the film.

German Retirees in Eastern European Homes | Journal Reporters
For the many elderly Germans who need care, the cost of nursing homes can be prohibitively high. Some are now turning to Eastern Europe for the solution. Care homes in countries like Poland and the Czech Republic are cheaper than in Germany. But others are still put off by differences in language and culture, as well as the increased distance from their relatives. More Journal-Reporters: http://www.dw.de/program/journal/s-3232-9798
