Non-Destructive Evaluation {Engineering Testing} (1978)

Wright Aeronautical Laboratories: Air Force Strategic Command. Aerospace Audio Visual Service (MAC) For Air Force Systems Command AVR 180 Non-Destructive Evaluation {Engineering Testing} (1978) NON-DESTRUCTIVE EVALUATION - DEMONSTRATION OF NEW MATERIALS FOR AIRCRAFT STRUCTURES WITHOUT DESTROYING THE MATERIAL' 'AFSC (Air Force Systems Command) STAFF FILM REPORT 265... Originally A Public Domain Film From The US National Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization. https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nondest... Nondestructive testing or non-destructive testing (NDT) is a wide group of analysis techniques used in science and technology industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component or system without causing damage. The terms nondestructive examination (NDE), nondestructive inspection (NDI), and nondestructive evaluation (NDE) are also commonly used to describe this technology. Because NDT does not permanently alter the article being inspected, it is a highly valuable technique that can save both money and time in product evaluation, troubleshooting, and research. The six most frequently used NDT methods are eddy-current, magnetic-particle, liquid penetrant, radiographic, ultrasonic, and visual testing. NDT is commonly used in forensic engineering, mechanical engineering, petroleum engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, systems engineering, aeronautical engineering, medicine, and art. Innovations in the field of nondestructive testing have had a profound impact on medical imaging, including on echocardiography, medical ultrasonography, and digital radiography. Various national and international trade associations exist to promote the industry, knowledge about non-destructive testing, and to develop standard methods and training. These include the American Society for Nondestructive Testing, the Non-Destructive Testing Management Association, the International Committee for Non-Destructive Testing, the European Federation for Non-Destructive Testing and the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing. NDT methods rely upon use of electromagnetic radiation, sound and other signal conversions to examine a wide variety of articles (metallic and non-metallic, food-product, artifacts and antiquities, infrastructure) for integrity, composition, or condition with no alteration of the article undergoing examination. Visual inspection (VT), the most commonly applied NDT method, is quite often enhanced by the use of magnification, borescopes, cameras, or other optical arrangements for direct or remote viewing. The internal structure of a sample can be examined for a volumetric inspection with penetrating radiation (RT), such as X-rays, neutrons or gamma radiation. Sound waves are utilized in the case of ultrasonic testing (UT), another volumetric NDT method – the mechanical signal (sound) being reflected by conditions in the test article and evaluated for amplitude and distance from the search unit (transducer). Another commonly used NDT method used on ferrous materials involves the application of fine iron particles (either suspended in liquid or dry powder – fluorescent or colored) that are applied to a part while it is magnetized, either continually or residually. The particles will be attracted to leakage fields of magnetism on or in the test object, and form indications (particle collection) on the object's surface, which are evaluated visually. Contrast and probability of detection for a visual examination by the unaided eye is often enhanced by using liquids to penetrate the test article surface, allowing for visualization of flaws or other surface conditions. This method (liquid penetrant testing) (PT) involves using dyes, fluorescent or colored (typically red), suspended in fluids and is used for non-magnetic materials, usually metals. Analyzing and documenting a nondestructive failure mode can also be accomplished using a high-speed camera recording continuously (movie-loop) until the failure is detected. Detecting the failure can be accomplished using a sound detector or stress gauge which produces a signal to trigger the high-speed camera. These high-speed cameras have advanced recording modes to capture some non-destructive failures. After the failure the high-speed camera will stop recording. The capture images can be played back in slow motion showing precisely what happen before, during and after the nondestructive event, image by image.

The purpose of the association is to maintain and enhance the standards of professionalism of the AME and the aircraft maintenance industry as a whole, and to promote the rights and privileges of the AME. The association works with and is consulted by Transport Canada in the formulation of new rules and regulations to promote the viewpoint of the AME. We are represented on various committees and working groups involved with aircraft maintenance and licensing. We support the community college aircraft maintenance programs throughout Ontario through annual monetary awards to their top students. Two workshops are conducted annually. One in the Toronto area and the other in Thunder Bay. These workshops are run by separate committees under the auspices of the association. The workshops (Toronto is a two day event and Thunder Bay is a single day event) feature speakers on a variety of topics. An industry trade show with over fifty booths from various companies, suppliers, manufacturers, and other organizations is part of the workshop presentation. Attendance at this and our various other smaller workshops and training sessions can be counted towards the recurrent training requirements by Transport Canada. We publish periodic newsletters which contains items of current interest to our members as well as commentaries and articles on maintenance procedures. This Millennial Physics Genius Is Being Hailed As The Next Einstein

07:42
Please do not forget to visit the site http://scribol.com ************************************************************** When a young Sabrina Pasterski informed her teacher at Aurora’s Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy that she had once flown a plane, the response she received was, “That’s nice, but what have you done lately?” Those words might sound gratuitously cutting had they not been so influential. That’s because for Pasterski, now a 23-year-old physics wunderkind and one of the most daring minds in modern science, they’ve become the mantra by which she strives to surpass her previous achievements. Pasterski’s questing ambition began at an early age and is arguably in her blood. A first-generation Cuban-American who was raised in Chicago, she reportedly developed an interest in aviation and space travel at the tender age of four. Her father, meanwhile, is not only an attorney but also a pilot and an electrical engineer. And it seems as if Pasterski’s parents were keen to cultivate her inquisitive mind from the offset. When she was just nine, for example, they began taking her to Canada so that she could have flying lessons – the age restrictions in the United States being too high. But for Pasterski’s teacher, seemingly, this wasn’t enough. So at 12 years old, the determined Pasterski bought a kit with the components she needed to build her own aircraft. She subsequently spent a month constructing the engine from the scraps of other machines, with the completed model being classified as a “Sabrina 0-200A” by the Federal Aviation Administration. Then, just under a year after starting the project, Pasterski’s airplane was complete. “I told you, Daddy, I told you,” exclaims a teenage Pasterski in a YouTube video she uploaded in 2008, entitled “Building an Airplane for my Dad.” The excitement in her voice is tinged with significance – at just 13 years old, Pasterski has awakened a lifelong, consuming passion for physics. When seeking clearance for the aircraft, meanwhile, Pasterski marched into the offices of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her diminutive figure stood out in the male-dominated environment and caught the attention of executive secretary Peggy Udden. “I couldn’t believe it. Not only because she was so young, but [also] a girl,” she told news website OZY in January 2016. After her aeronautical triumph, then, Pasterski decided to take her skills to the next level. She applied to MIT, though initially she was put on a waiting list. However, an impressed Udden made sure that Pasterski’s talent didn’t go unnoticed. Udden had brought the video of Pasterski constructing the aircraft to the attention of two professors, Allen Haggerty and Earll Murman. The professors fought her case, and Pasterski was finally accepted as an MIT undergrad in the fall of 2011. Haggerty in particular has been vocal in his support for the young physicist, telling OZY, “Her potential is off the charts.” And we can safely guess that MIT did not regret its decision to accept Pasterski. After all, she garnered a whole host of accolades and work-experience placements while studying at the college, including stints with Phantom-Works, CERN-GMS and even NASA. Indeed, she was actually the first freshman from MIT to be accepted to the NASA January Operational Internship. ************************************************************** ►You can support the channel: PATREON https://goo.gl/KtaKrp ►web: http://watchjojo.com ► SUBSCRIBE US: https://goo.gl/Z4nZcg ► Follow Us On Google Plus: https://goo.gl/JYf9Rr ► Like us Our Facebook Page: https://goo.gl/C5Rv92 ► Follow On Twitter: https://goo.gl/PZ2U1R ►For more articles visit: http://scribol.com ►Article link: https://goo.gl/t9TGxw #watchjojo

Episode 37 Gary Taubes discusses low carb diets and sheds light on the hazards of sugar

02:00:29
Subscribe to the podcast at http://stemtalk.us Full show notes are available at http://stemtalk.us/episode-37/ The front pages of Gary Taubes’ new book on sugar feature a blurb excerpted from the magazine Scientific American: “Taubes is a science journalist’s science journalist who researches topics to the point of obsession – actually, well beyond that point – and never dumbs things down for readers.” Gary’s most recent obsession is documented in “The Case Against Sugar,” a book that argues that increased consumption of sugar over the past 30 to 40 years has led to a diabetes epidemic not only in the United States, but an epidemic that’s now spreading around the world. Episode 37 of STEM-Talk features a more than two-hour conversation with Gary about his latest research as well as a look back at other nutrition and science topics that have dominated Gary’s journalistic investigations since the 1980s. Gary first burst onto the national scene in 2002 with an article in the New York Times Magazine titled, “What If’s It’s All Been a Big Fat Lie?” Gary made the point that Robert Atkins and his high-fat, low-carb diet had a better history and scientific record of helping people lose weight than the low-fat diet that was and remains the centerpiece of the nation’s health policy and food pyramid. The article had an immediate impact. As Michael Pollan pointed out in the introduction of “The Omnivore’s Dilemma,” in the fall of 2002 bread “abruptly disappeared overnight from the American dinner table.” Virtually overnight, wrote Pollan, Americans changed the way they eat. Gary did not set out to become a science journalist. He graduated from Harvard College in 1977 with an S.B. degree in applied physics and went on to earn an M.S. degree in aeronautical engineering from Stanford University. But while at Stanford, he realized he wasn’t that passionate about becoming an aeronautical engineer and decided to enroll in the Columbia School of Journalism to become an investigative reporter. In the ‘80s, Gary became fascinated with flawed science and started writing a series of magazine articles about bad science. That eventually led to a pair of books: “Nobel Dreams” in 1987 and “Bad Science: The Short Life and Weird Times of Cold Fusion” in 1993. After “Bad Science,” Gary turned to nutrition reporting and that resulted in the 2002 article in the New York Times Magazine. He followed up on his research for the article with two books: “Good Calories, Bad Calories” in 2007; and “Why We Get Fat” in 2010. Both books detailed how refined carbohydrates are largely responsible for America’s rising obesity rate and a primary cause of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, and other chronic diseases of the Western diet. His new book, “The Case Against Sugar,” takes this argument a step further and shows how the explosion of sugar consumption and sugar-rich products in the United States has led to a global diabetes epidemic. Dan Barber, author of “The Third Plate,” wrote in a New York Times review of Gary’s book, “Comparing the dangers of inhaling cigarettes with chowing down on candy bars may sound like a false equivalence, but Gary Taubes’s “The Case Against Sugar” will persuade you otherwise. Here is a book on sugar that sugarcoats nothing. The stuff kills.” Below are links to Gary’s books: “The Case Against Sugar” http://amzn.to/2ps8Qbl “Good Calories, Bad Calories” http://amzn.to/2qTwJJ6 “Why We Get Fat” http://amzn.to/2qKuv2u “Bad Science” http://amzn.to/2qTjyrI “Nobel Dreams” http://amzn.to/2pXpRgK

Astro Turf: The Private Life of Rocket Science

09:06
Frank Joseph Malina (October 2, 1912 – November 9, 1981) was an American aeronautical engineer and painter, especially known for becoming both a pioneer in the art world and the realm of scientific engineering. Malina was born in Brenham, Texas[1]. His father came from Bohemia. Frank's formal education began with a degree in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M University in 1934. In 1935, while a graduate student at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Malina persuaded Professor of Aeronautics Theodore von Kármán to allow him to pursue studies into rocketry and rocket propulsion. The formal goal was development of a sounding rocket. Malina and five associates (including Jack Parsons[2]) became known at Caltech as the "Suicide Squad" because of their dangerous experiments (and failures) when testing rocket motor designs. Malina's group was forced to move their operations away from the main Caltech campus into the more remote Arroyo Seco. This site and the research Malina was conducting would later become the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Malina served as the second Director of JPL.[3] In 1939, the Société astronomique de France (French Astronomical Society) awarded Malina the Prix d'Astronautique for his contribution to the study of interplanetary travel and astronautics. He moved to France and joined the fledgling United Nations as secretariat of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) under Julian Huxley. In 1951, Malina became head of UNESCO's division of scientific research. Two years later, Malina left UNESCO to pursue an interest in kinetic art.[7] In 1952, at the height of the Red Scare, Malina was indicted for having failed to list his Communist Party membership on an old security questionnaire from Caltech. He was declared a fugitive, to be arrested if and when he returned to the United States.[8] In 1968 in Paris[9] he founded Leonardo, an international peer-reviewed research journal that featured articles written by artists on their own work, and focused on the interactions between the contemporary arts with the sciences and new technologies. The Leonardo journal is still published as of 2018 as a project of Leonardo/ISAST, the International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Malina

♦♦ Motorized swing/extend TV mount for 90 inch TV ♦♦

02:16
Cello was brought in at the end of a multi-year residential project in Phoenix (articles about which were published over the last three years in CEPro magazine under the title, "$20M home install") to design a solution for a TV that was to be located in a side wall alcove. Cello's solution; a motorized swing/extend mount, which provides for comfortable TV viewing from a variety of seating locations. Since the location for the TV was recessed into casework, the mount not only had to swing, but also extend the TV out into the room, and the mount had to be completely stable, silent, and safe for the client's grandchildren (designed for zero deflection even at twice the design load, and having a 4x safety factor). Cello was not the integrator on this project, so the control side had to be easy to integrate into the existing control system specified for the house. For all these reasons, Cello rejected a multi-actuator approach suggested by the client and their contractors, and instead solved the swing/extend motion problem with mathematics and a geometric structure similar to aircraft landing gear (not too surprising, given that Cello's owner is an aeronautical engineer with a minor in math!). In addition to the mount design, Cello collaborated with the fabricator to devise an anchoring system that would work for the existing conditions (allowing installation without modifying the wall structure) and provided onsite supervision of the installation. Engineers Are Makers: Nathan Tornquist, Purdue University

For the past seven years, @TheHighCalling [thehighcalling.org] has supported the @Jubilee Conference [jubileeconference.com], an annual gathering of thousands of college students learning how to worship God with their whole lives. Whether a person is interested in engineering and science or art and music, law and politics or medicine and mission, justice and families or college life and the years to come, Jubilee has someone speaking about what it means to be involved in those places faithfully. This video is one of our 2015 entries in a contest to inspire students to share what God is doing in their work and what he will do. "Throughout my life I've watched my father work in his community. He showed his faith through his work. As an engineer he used his problem solving skills to transform our community, and publicly shared his trust in God through his words and actions. There was never a distinction between his work and his faith; it wasn't the church side and the rest of his life, it was just life.Engineering teaches me how to look at problems analytically, stepping back from emotional decision-making. However despite the efficiency of logical analysis, it can also damage people and communities. When you look at problems from an engineering perspective coupled with God’s Word, you open yourself up to make decisions that are both technically and morally sound. The Gospel teaches that work is good, so it is my responsibility to use my skills to take care of and cultivate the world. I am a steward, not just a consumer, and I need to do work for people, not just for a paycheck. A lot of tech companies today treat people like parts of a machine. They buy good people, use them up, then just buy more. When looking for a job, I wanted to work somewhere that valued people: both the customer and the employee. I was drawn to a company that develops loan software. They provide loans that are carefully designed to help people, providing credit options to those in need and ultimately build up the underprivileged. Like my father, I want to use my skills to help people. I want to share God's love through my work and use my skills as a software engineer to build tools that can provide opportunities to people in need. Engineers are makers. I want to be a difference maker." Like what you see? Join us now over at http://TheHighCalling.org for videos like this one, discussions, articles and more!
