What is COMMODITIES EXCHANGE? What does COMMODITIES EXCHANGE mean? COMMODITIES EXCHANGE meaning - COMMODITIES EXCHANGE definition - COMMODITIES EXCHANGE explanation. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. A commodities exchange is an exchange where various commodities and derivatives products are traded. Most commodity markets across the world trade in agricultural products and other raw materials (like wheat, barley, sugar, maize, cotton, cocoa, coffee, milk products, pork bellies, oil, metals, etc.) and contracts based on them. These contracts can include spot prices, forwards, futures and options on futures. Other sophisticated products may include interest rates, environmental instruments, swaps, or ocean freight contracts. Commodities exchanges usually trade futures contracts on commodities, such as trading contracts to receive something, say corn, in a certain month. A farmer raising corn can sell a future contract on his corn, which will not be harvested for several months, and guarantee the price he will be paid when he delivers; a breakfast cereal producer buys the contract now and guarantees the price will not go up when it is delivered. This protects the farmer from price drops and the buyer from price rises. Speculators and investors also buy and sell the futures contracts in attempt to make a profit and provide liquidity to the system. However, due to the financial leverage provided to traders by the exchange, commodity futures traders face a substantial risk.

A Useful Idiot talks about a new report from the Financial Times about commodity trader profits over the last decade - a staggering $250 billion - and an examination of the lead up to this explosion in commodities speculation and bubbles. It would be safe to say that even that number - $250 billion - is probably a low estimate as this private industry has so little oversight. This is particularly relevant in light of the recent crash/panic of gold, massive global money printing, and the apparent end of the commodity supercycle spurred on by rapid growth in the developing world. Continued global contraction, continuing slowdown in China, and continued Eurozone problems are making the money shift around yet again and making it apparent that there is still much trouble ahead. Contracts on financial instruments were introduced in the 1970s by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and these instruments became hugely successful and quickly overtook commodities futures in terms of trading volume and global accessibility to the markets. This innovation led to the introduction of many new futures exchanges worldwide, such as the London International Financial Futures Exchange in 1982 (now Euronext.liffe), Deutsche Terminbörse (now Eurex) and the Tokyo Commodity Exchange (TOCOM). Today, there are more than 90 futures and futures options exchanges worldwide trading to include: CME Group (formerly CBOT and CME) -- Currencies, Various Interest Rate derivatives (including US Bonds); Agricultural (Corn, Soybeans, Soy Products, Wheat, Pork, Cattle, Butter, Milk); Indices (Dow Jones Industrial Average, NASDAQ Composite, S&P 500, etc.); Metals (Gold, Silver) Intercontinental Exchange (ICE Futures Europe) - formerly the International Petroleum Exchange trades energy including crude oil, heating oil, gas oil (diesel), refined petroleum products, electric power, coal, natural gas, and emissions NYSE Euronext - which absorbed Euronext into which London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange or LIFFE (pronounced 'LIFE') was merged. (LIFFE had taken over London Commodities Exchange ("LCE") in 1996)- softs: grains and meats. Inactive market in Baltic Exchange shipping. Index futures include EURIBOR, FTSE 100, CAC 40, AEX index. South African Futures Exchange - SAFEX Sydney Futures Exchange Tokyo Stock Exchange TSE (JGB Futures, TOPIX Futures) Tokyo Commodity Exchange TOCOM Tokyo Financial Exchange - TFX - (Euroyen Futures, OverNight CallRate Futures, SpotNext RepoRate Futures) Osaka Securities Exchange OSE (Nikkei Futures, RNP Futures) London Metal Exchange - metals: copper, aluminium, lead, zinc, nickel, tin and steel IntercontinentalExchange (ICE Futures U.S.) - formerly New York Board of Trade - softs: cocoa, coffee, cotton, orange juice, sugar New York Mercantile Exchange CME Group- energy and metals: crude oil, gasoline, heating oil, natural gas, coal, propane, gold, silver, platinum, copper, aluminum and palladium Dubai Mercantile Exchange JFX Jakarta Futures Exchange Montreal Exchange (MX) (owned by the TMX Group) also known in French as Bourse De Montreal: Interest Rate and Cash Derivatives: Canadian 90 Days Bankers' Acceptance Futures, Canadian government bond futures, S&P/TSX 60 Index Futures, and various other Index Futures Korea Exchange - KRX Singapore Exchange - SGX - into which merged Singapore International Monetary Exchange (SIMEX) ROFEX - Rosario (Argentina) Futures Exchange NCDEX - National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange, India Futures traders are traditionally placed in one of two groups: hedgers, who have an interest in the underlying asset (which could include an intangible such as an index or interest rate) and are seeking to hedge out the risk of price changes; and speculators, who seek to make a profit by predicting market moves and opening a derivative contract related to the asset "on paper", while they have no practical use for or intent to actually take or make delivery of the underlying asset. In other words, the investor is seeking exposure to the asset in a long futures or the opposite effect via a short futures contract. Speculators typically fall into three categories: position traders, day traders, and swing traders (swing trading), though many hybrid types and unique styles exist. With many investors pouring into the futures markets in recent years controversy has risen about whether speculators are responsible for increased volatility in commodities like oil, and experts are divided on the matter. An example that has both hedge and speculative notions involves a mutual fund or separately managed account whose investment objective is to track the performance of a stock index such as the S&P 500 stock index. The Portfolio manager often "equitizes" cash inflows in an easy and cost effective manner by investing in (opening long) S&P 500 stock index futures. This gains the portfolio exposure to the index which is consistent with the fund or account investment objective without having to buy an appropriate proportion of each of the individual 500 stocks just yet. This also preserves balanced diversification, maintains a higher degree of the percent of assets invested in the market and helps reduce tracking error in the performance of the fund/account. When it is economically feasible (an efficient amount of shares of every individual position within the fund or account can be purchased), the portfolio manager can close the contract and make purchases of each individual stock. The social utility of futures markets is considered to be mainly in the transfer of risk, and increased liquidity between traders with different risk and time preferences, from a hedger to a speculator, for example. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Futures_contract

http://www.kinconsortium.com/commodities.html Whether it is Gold or Oil, certain commodities thrive in chaos and uncertainty. Morgan Stanley actually bought a physical oil tanker filled with oil, in the midst of the financial crises in 2008. History has also shown us how people have chased that soft and shiny metal Gold for one reason or another. In fact, there are companies in both Madrid and Dubai that offer Gold per ounce through ATM Machines 24 hours a day. These two commodities in particular offer their respective owners the perception of safety and comfort, in an environment where the World Media is riddled with stories about chaos and bankruptcies. It seems the most prudent investors are investing into these commodities with great success. The international stories in the news are raging about insurance companies going bankrupt like AMBAC and MBIA. These two are not regular insurance companies that cover higher risk corporate or individual concerns. These two defunct insurance companies happen to insure the debt of individual State Governments in America. The facts is that there are Municipal Bonds in America that are currently yielding higher interest rates than corporate bonds in December of 2010. Despite the higher payoff, according to our research at The KIN Consortium, investors are still focussed on commodities. The response of the market seems to indicate there is a lack of confidence in securities vs commodities. As a result, most people tend to rely on underlying assets that are actually tangible and have a perceived value. In fact we here in the Islamic World see that exact principle at the root of Islamic Finance with asset backed debts called sukuk. Everywhere around the world people are growing wary of metaphysical insurance vehicles that are long on promises and short on delivery. Lets track the prices and see where the investors have been going with their cash. When there is a lack of trust in the financial vehicles, people turn to commodities like oil and gold. Drawing on 22+ years of successful commodity derivatives investment experience and tested over the course of multi-year market cycles, Martin Fund LP, MFM's flagship fund, employs short- to medium-term trading programs with low macro correlation and disciplined risk management targeting the unique and uncorrelated soft commodities markets. In this Opalesque.TV interview, Mr. Martin introduces his background, where early in his trading career he recognized specific spread correlations in coffee, sugar, and cocoa. Over the last 25 years Martin has lived through many multi-year cycles, developing systems along the way, and more recently, adapting its sophisticated analytics to an electronic execution method. In Martin’s words, his data “isn’t back-tested, it’s something that I’ve lived,” as he brings personal experience to these extremely niche, uncorrelated markets which have “their own elasticity.” With the vast majority of the crops harvested in the same manner as they were over a century ago, Martin’s track record trading “antique” markets and lengthy personal experience are a rare fit in markets with a dearth of experienced traders. U.S. government officials are expecting a record year for American agricultural exports, as agriculture commodity prices continue to climb near the all-time peak levels reached in 2008. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack said at the Commodity Classis convention in Tampa, that exports of farm and food products are expected to reach $135.5 billion in fiscal year 2011, which ends in September. That would be the best year ever for US exports in the sector, and would represent a 25% increase in value over fiscal 2010.
