A New Continent Is Discovered on Earth In the Pacific Ocean

10:32
How to Stop Water Polution. In case you're wondering what water polution has to do with a new continent discoevered in the Pacific Ocean, here's the answer to this mystery. This new continent is an island that consists solely of garbage and plastic waste. Some countries are ready to announce an ecological disaster. Let’s see if there’s something we can all do to save the planet. TIMESTAMPS The popularity of plastic 0:26 Garbage islands 1:47 The Great Pacific Garbage Patch 2:30 Problems connected with the plastic pollution of the ocean 4:39 Bali ecological disaster 7:31 Several ways to solve problem 8:26 #newcontinent #garbageisland #ecologicalproblem Music: Butchers - Silent Partner https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY -2 million plastic bags a minute are thrown away. As for bubble wrap, the amount produced in just one year would be enough to cover our planet around the equator. 500 billion plastic cups are used and disposed of annually. -There are 3 huge garbage islands in the world: in the central North Pacific Ocean, in the Indian Ocean, and in the Atlantic Ocean. -The size of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is currently more than 600,000 square miles. According to the journal Scientific Reports, there are more than 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic that have accumulated in this area. -Plastic objects in the ocean kill animals or get stuck in their bodies. Some types of plastic are toxic. In addition, plastic has the ability to absorb such poisonous substances as mercury. Birds often choke to death after trying to swallow a bright object that has caught their eye. -Indonesian authorities have recently declared a “garbage emergency.” More than 100 tons of waste brought ashore every day to beaches from Seminyak and Jimbaran to Kuta. -To solve the problem, people can find a way to remove the garbage that is already in the ocean. Another way out is to decrease pollution or stop it completely. Every 2 hours, we throw away enough trash to fill up the largest container ship in the world. Thankfully, people are now setting all kinds of eco-friendly trends, and companies are coming up with green technologies that let consumers live a low-waste yet equally comfortable lifestyle. Here are some of the best examples! NOHBO produces drops and balls that can replace plastic bottles. Available now on www.Nohbodrops.com Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - Disposable cutlery is a major contributor to the growing plastic waste crisis. That's why using an edible alternative can help cut back on all that plastic garbage. They taste like crackers, so you could just have them as a snack too! - Waterlily is a relatively small turbine that converts moving wind or water into actual electricity! So, yes, you can use it to charge all your USB-powered devices such as tablets, smartphones, cameras, and so on. - Another super cool thing for camping enthusiasts is the Biolite CampStove 2. It works only on wood, and its fan creates smokeless fire that can cook food and boil water in minutes. - Water blobs are an alternative for single-use plastic water bottles. They consist of water surrounded by a jelly-like capsule made of seaweed extract. - The Barsha pump is a hydro-powered pump that works anywhere there’s flowing water. When placed in a river or stream, it uses the energy from the current to send water inland without the need of expensive fuel. - Mr. Trash Wheel is the cute nickname Baltimore locals thought up for the Inner Harbor Water Wheel. This awesome machine collects garbage flowing down the Jones Falls River. - A Canadian company has invented a turbine that turns a river's perpetual flow into power and makes up to 12 kilowatt hours, which is enough to power your home. - Tire shredder gives tires a second life by separating the rubber from the textile, fiber, and steel cords. You can then recycle these materials into new products, like for construction! - Shampoo pods are plastic-free and come in a soluble form that contains enough product to wash hair of any length and simply melts in water. - Powder that cleans dirty water kills off all bacteria and mixes with dirt and pollutants so that they fall to the bottom. - You can place all kinds of food and organic waste into the HomeBiogas. Then, bacteria inside the bin decompose the organic material and release biogas that travels through a gas pipe and is ready to be used for cooking! - Ingeniously dubbed the SpinCycle, this machine just looks like a bike with a plastic drum attached to it. But what it actually does is wash your clothes while you go for a nice bike ride! - Waterotor is a special turbine that harnesses green energy from slow water currents. This one can create a sufficient amount of electricity when it's submerged in water that moves as slow as 2 mph. - Bright minds in Africa decided to turn feces into fuel! They first let it dry for 3 weeks in a greenhouse and heat it up at really high temperatures. After all that, the waste loses its smell, and you can start planning your next barbecue! Here's why we need to rethink veganism

A brief climate change video essay on the environmental impacts of veganism, and how we can reframe going vegan less as a lifestyle and more as an aspiration. Top 10 AMAZING New Green Technologies in the Works

10:03
The world is feeling the effects of climate change. Storms are getting stronger, weather patterns are changing, food is becoming scarce, and animals are going extinct at an alarming rate. Fortunately, while there are many people that are continuing to hurt our environment, there are also people out there who are working feverishly to help it. From simple ideas to entire Eco-cities, new ideas are being developed everyday to help improve the environment and our lives. Air Purifying Roof Tiles A big problem with green technology is making it as practical as it is useful. With this in mind, a new trend in practical green technology is the coating of roof tiles with titanium dioxide, which is useful in cleaning the air. Titanium dioxide works as a photocatalyst by oxidizing nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds into soluble nitrates and fatty acids when exposed to UV light. Studies have shown that a thick coating of material on roof tiles reduces 97% of target greenhouse gases, while a thinner, cost effective coat still reduces the target gases by 88%. This means that it could cost just five dollars to coat an entire roof with the purifying compound. One home could remove 21g of nitrogen oxide a day, which is the equivalent of what a car releases driving 18,000 km. Widespread application would allow every home in the world to become a mini-air purifier. The idea is still in the testing phase, but early results have been extremely promising. The lighter color of the tiles also has the added benefit of producing a small cooling effect. There’s also a possibility of producing tiles to remove carbon dioxide, but this would decrease the practicality of the tiles by making the roofs harder to install. Smog-Eating Buildings Mexico City’s Manuel Gea Gonzalez Hospital constructed a 2,500 square meter facade that breaks down air pollutants when exposed to UV light. The honeycomb increases the surface area by 200% and allows the structure to neutralize the same amount of pollutants in one day that’s produced by 8,750 cars. →Subscribe for new videos every day! https://www.youtube.com/user/toptenznet?sub_confirmation=1 → → GET A T-SHIRT - http://shop.spreadshirt.com/toptenz →Top 10 Objects That Were Clearly Invented Just to Annoy Physics: https://youtu.be/0MVGeRa-vLo →Simon's VLOG: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvqt8j7DfPmveJp3UOk9XTg Entertaining and educational top 10 lists from TopTenzNet! 15 Dramatic Changes on Earth Revealed by NASA

05:42
If you compare some of the photographs which can be found on NASA’s website, you can really see how human beings have changed the appearance of our world over the years. The time difference between these images ranges from five to 100 years. Incredible stuff. The photo taken in 1917 shows that it was an ordinary massive glacier once. No icebergs are visible anymore. - The Aral Sea in Kazakhstan almost disappeared by 2014 due to the extensive irrigation of cotton fields. - Lake Oroville was hit hard by the lack of water while California was suffering from a severe drought. - The photo taken at the same place almost 100 years later shows that the Carroll glacier still exists, but it has serious problems. The ice cap has melted and has been covered with natural debris. - Powell Lake is an artificial reservoir located on the Colorado River. It’s easy to notice that its water level has reduced over 15 years. - The rise in temperature from 1950 to 1990 caused the giant Bear Glacier to retreat by one mile. From 2000 to 2005, it moved another two miles. - Since the 1960s, Amazon rain forests have been actively cut down. According to current estimates, they now have about 80% left. The state of Rondonia in Brazil lost most of its forests. - Toboggan Glacier covered a large territory once. Unfortunately, like many other glaciers on our planet, this one keeps melting fast. Comparing the two photos, you can see that there is less snow in 2000. - Qori Kalis Glacier located in the Andes mountains of Peru. Frankly speaking, it's almost impossible to recognize this place nowadays – the difference is truly shocking. - Mar Chiquita Lake is the biggest salt lake in South America. As you see, it has become smaller in recent years, but the area still looks lush. Endangered Species: Worth Saving from Extinction?

06:09
Species are going extinct at crazy high rates. Does it matter? TEACHERS: Get your students in the discussion on KQED Learn, a safe place for middle and high school students to investigate controversial topics and share their voices. https://learn.kqed.org/topics/5 Species are going extinct at crazy high rates. Does it matter? Find out in this video. ABOVE THE NOISE is a show that cuts through the hype and investigates the research behind controversial and trending topics in the news. Hosted by Myles Bess. *NEW VIDEOS EVERY OTHER WEDNESDAY* SUBSCRIBE by clicking the RED BUTTON above. Follow us on Instagram @kqedabovethenoise What does it mean when a species goes extinct? A species goes extinct when there are no longer any more of that species left on earth. That species is gone forever aka extinct. What is the 6th mass extinction? Throughout earth’s history there have been five major mass extinction events-- where a large percentage of species died out. Scientists estimate that we are in the middle of the 6th mass extinction event right now, where species are dying out at 1,000 to 10,000 times baseline extinction rates. Why should we care if a species goes extinct? Moral and ethical arguments to try to prevent species extinction include reasons like all life has a right to be here, or that we owe it to our grandchildren to protect species so they can see them in the wild. Species also impact the ecosystems they are a part of; plants and animals depend on each other in an ecosystem for things like food and shelter, so if one species dies out, then that could affect other species in an ecosystem. For example sea otters live in kelp forests and eat sea urchins, and when they were hunted almost to extinction the sea urchin population increased and ate all the kelp-- destroying the kelp forest habitat. What are ecosystem services? Ecosystem services are the collective benefits we get from ecosystems. Ecosystems provide us with a lot of great things like natural resources and water, and are home to living things we depend on-- like insects that pollinate our crops and decomposers that get rid of our waste. Ecosystems are healthiest when they are the most biodiverse. Get great ideas from Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/organything/new-uses-for-things-you-already-have/ Check out our blog for useful articles like this one: Living a frugal lifestyle can seem daunting, and a desire to "keep up with the Joneses" can lead us to spend money on possessions we don't need or even really want. So how do we escape this cycle of mindless spending? It's simple. Find new, creative and fun ways to use what you have. Organize Anything has a few great ideas of how to avoid spending money on things you don't really need. 1. Don't buy new books or magazines. Read the ones you bought and never got to, and give away the ones you aren't going to read. Magazines tend to pile up, so cancel your subscriptions and only purchase one if it contains articles you really want to read. 2. Reacquaint yourself with your local library. Beyond books, most libraries have a comprehensive DVD, CD and EBook collections. Some libraries also offer an excellent collection of online, downloadable offerings for those of you who prefer to listen to a book than read it. And the best part? No clutter at home and it's free! 3. Revisit old hobbies. If you've been itching for something to do in your spare time, take a look at the last hobby you picked up. If you gave up knitting because you didn't have time, give it another shot. You already have all the supplies you need, don't need to relearn how to do it, and you may discover a new appreciation for it. If you don't it's now time to pass along to someone who would enjoy the supplies. 4. Spare change no more. Gather all your spare change into one place and keep it in a jar. Once the jar is full, roll it up and use it to buy a treat or give it in increments to your kids for lunch money. You'll be surprised how quickly the pennies will add up to a substantial sum of money. 5. Make your own fancy dinner. Grocery stores carry some excellent frozen gourmet meals. Pick up a few components that you can store in the freezer, so the next time you want to go out to eat at a swanky restaurant you can recreate the experience at home. 6. You collect the points, so redeem them. It seems that everyone offers a loyalty point program these days, so take advantage. Take a look at the rewards selection and treat yourself to a trip, service or product. 7. Shop from your friend's homes. Have a clothing swap or let others know you are letting go of some articles and would like to exchange them for things that you need. You'll be surprised by how well this works for your pocket book and it's a fun way to connect with friends and family as well. 8. Use up those gift certifcates. When you receive a gift certificate, note the expiry date in your calendar. Use them to treat yourself to a spa day or a nice dinner when the budget is a tight. Frugal living takes a little planning, but it doesn't have to negatively affect your lifestyle. These easy eight tips will start you on your way to reaping the benefits of a more frugal lifestyle If you have any questions, or would like to book Colette to come and help you, visit us online at www.organizeanything.com, on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/organizeanything, on Twitter at http://twitter.com/organizenow or at our blog: http://www.organizeanything.wordpress.com

A 70-Year-Old Grandma Cleaned 52 Beaches in Just a Year

07:23
Spring is here, and it’s a time for spring cleaning! But while you might be deciding what room to tackle first in your house, there’s one elderly lady who has decided to deep-clean this planet -- one beach at a time! And that lovely lady is Pat Smith. She was inspired by a documentary about the negative effects of plastic pollution on the planet. What she saw in the film kept her up at night worrying about the problem. When she got up in the morning, she decided to do something about it. Pat Smith is from Cornwall, which is the most southwestern county in the UK. With the Celtic Sea on one side and the English Channel on the other, Cornwall is a place with a LOT of beaches. And this 70-year-old grandmother has already cleaned 52 of them within a single year! Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - Pat Smith set herself the challenge of cleaning one beach every week for the year of 2018. With the support of the Cornwall community and the help of some volunteers, she actually completed that goal! - After her year of grueling hard work, she started a campaign called The Final Straw. Her mission is to raise as much awareness as possible about not only the uselessness of plastic straws but also the harm they can bring to the environment and its wildlife. - One of the biggest culprits of this pollution problem is single-use plastic. n fact, every flimsy little plastic straw will outlive every person living on the planet right now! - Scientists can’t really measure the exact amount of plastic in the ocean, but an engineering professor from the University of Georgia estimated that it’s between 5 and 14 million tons. - Large bodies of water become filled with microplastic that could end up in our tap water or in the drinking water of animals that we use for meat. The food that both animals and humans eat could be grown in toxic soil. - Smith has already convinced local businesses like cafes and restaurants to ditch the use of plastic straws. - It'll take hundreds of years to rid the world of the estimated 9.2 billion tons of plastic (only around 7% of which ever make it to recycling). Smith’s efforts are only the tip of a really big mountain of garbage, and it’s gonna take a lot more people like her to undo the damage. Water Pollution for Kids | #aumsum

02:48
Our topic for today is Water Pollution. Contamination of water by harmful substances, which affects life on earth, is termed as water pollution. Due to human activities, our water is getting more and more polluted day by day. Household garbage is disposed into various sources of water. Many people perform their domestic activities like bathing, washing clothes and utensils, etc. in these sources of water. Also, industrial wastes are discharged into the water, leading to water pollution. Consumption of this polluted water leads to diseases like cholera, typhoid, diarrhoea, etc. in human beings. Polluted water also adversely affects the aquatic life. Thus, we need to make sure that we do not pollute water. Domestic activities such as bathing, washing clothes and utensils should not be done in rivers, lakes, ponds, etc. Household garbage should not be disposed in the various sources of water. Also, sewage and industrial waste water should be treated before discharging into the water.

What If Ocean Water Lost Its Salt

08:32
Lots of people on certain parts of continents don’t have access to fresh water from rivers or lakes, and this crisis is getting more and more serious each year. Every 7th person on the planet suffers from a lack of access to clean drinkable water right now. And some experts say that as the world population doubles by 2030, that statistic will skyrocket to one-half! Actually, 97% of all the water on the planet has always been briny, and you can safely assume that it’s this way for a reason. …So magically pushing a button to make it fresh water in this hypothetical situation would be devastating for life on this planet. And here's why. Other videos you might like: What If Megalodon Sharks Didn't Go Extinct? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xh6pVbaEJTw& What If You Were the Last Person on Earth https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uGAINMAiL0& What If You Poured Some Water On The Sun? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0GOPAxEBDro TIMESTAMPS: Why the ocean is salty 1:44 Was seawater originally fresh? 3:08 Food chains would be destroyed 4:15 How the climate would change 5:36 Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - Rivers constantly bring fresh water to the oceans. You’d think these sources would dilute the sea and decrease the salt content. But in fact, it’s quite the opposite. Water in rivers is also brackish – it’s just 70 times less salty than in the ocean. - Each year 4 billion tons of salt are carried into the ocean just from rivers alone. If you keep doing that for the billions of years this planet has been in existence, you can imagine how much salt would gather there. - Sea salt derives from a hydrochloric acid, while river salts are from carbonic acid. More scientists today believe that the oceans have been salty from the start because of volcanic activity. - The most obvious consequence is that the innumerable forms of marine life can only exist in briny water – they wouldn’t survive in fresh water. - Without them, we’d lose this source of food, which would have a serious impact on not only the countries that are highly dependent on their fishery sectors, but also those they export to! - Like animals, algae are capable of feeding on organic material in their environment. Like plants, they take part in photosynthesis. They play a huge role in sustaining life because of this. - Ocean currents make the climate on earth a lot more tolerable and suitable for living. Take salt from the oceans, and the currents will disappear. Salt water has a much lower freezing temperature too. Without the salt, bigger parts of the oceans would turn to ice during the winter. - Plus, all that salt would eventually start appearing right back in the oceans! Minerals from the Earth’s crust would start dissolving into the sea again, and oceanic floor vents would also pump minerals into the water. Are electric cars really green? An investigation of Bjorn Lomborg's claims.

21:03
CORRECTIONS: 11:30 -- Estonia's electricity is not mostly coal-powered, it is mostly oil-shale powered. They both produce large amounts of CO2, so the point is the same. The result is that electric cars powered by the Estonian grid are much less green than in France. The photo of the 'lithium mine' is a diamond mine, according to National Geographic. A real lithium mine in Western Australia looks almost identical: www.wattelectricalnews.com/NEWS/Lithium-Mining-Delivers-BIG-for-WA,-Increased-Spodumene-Production/46120 SOURCES ARE BELOW If you would like to support this channel financially, I don't need the money. I make these videos if people donate to a charity I strongly endorse called Health in Harmony. It’s building clinics in Borneo that provide affordable health care to villages in return for a pledge not to cut down trees. The pledges are monitored, and the result is a dramatic decrease in deforestation rates and an increase in the health of the local population. You can make a donation here… https://healthinharmony.org/donate/ See https://psmag.com/social-justice/save-the-trees-well-save-your-life-46121 for an explanation of their work for details. GLOBE MAN SAVES THE PLANET

08:25
The not-so-friendly neighborhood Globe Man embarks on a journey to save the planet and educate us about global warming! #Globalwarmingisnotajoke A few weeks ago, my english teacher asked the class to make videos (in groups) to spread awareness on problems concerning the environment. Me and my friends, decided to make something a little different. In a way, it was special to us, so much so that we decided to upload it to youtube! But behind all the dumb and cringey jokes, were very important messages: global warming is not a joke and there is no payment necessary to start acting! 6 Practical Ways to Save the Planet

12:13
*Citations and resources linked below!* Our planet is in trouble. And we aren’t doing enough about it. Heck, some people don’t even believe in climate change (which is their right, though it does affect the rest of us). I believe most people care about our environment and want to make a difference. But it can be difficult to know how to start. And after writing an article called “Why I Hate Recycling,” I also believe a lot of people feel like super heroes just because they recycle. But it isn’t enough. With positivity and understanding, I hope these tips help you make a couple lifestyle changes beyond recycling. I know it isn’t easy, because we lack policies to hold companies accountable for our environment and a lot of the responsibility falls on us—but that’s why we need to all pull together and try a little harder to reduce our impact on the planet we claim to love so much. Although this is my opinion, I try to cite as many reputable sources as possible. Some of the links below are from non-profit organizations that focus on the environment, but they are backed by reputable research done by scientists (if you are the kind of person who believes in scientists :) ). Let me know if the comments if you have made any of these changes—or if you have any tips for me! Wire Tree Tutorial – Model Railroad

11:44
Building fantastic looking and very realistic trees from scratch doesn’t have to be hard and I’ll show you just how easy it really is. This tree will look fantastic on any model railroad, war gaming terrain or a display diorama and it will add life to any layout. Follow along as I step you through the process I use to create this great looking apple tree. The great part is you can still manipulate the tree to change its shape even after you’ve completed it. It’s a time consuming process but the results are well worth the time and effort. This particular tree is in HO scale, the wire I used scales down well to N scale and it’s simple to use thicker gauge wire to model in the larger scales. Check out http://www.bouldercreekrailroad.com for more articles and tutorials about modeling and model railroads. Jeff Bezos Radical Plan To Preserve The Earth

10:07
Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/neoscribe Jeff Bezos, the founder, and CEO of Amazon, who at the time of writing this script, is worth an insane amount of money at over $135 billion. Bezos earns $1… every 1.66 milliseconds… Haha! That’s hard to grasp, so to illustrate how much he earns, I’m going to periodically flash how much money he’s earned since the start of this video, like this. So, what does the richest person in the world dream about, what does he strive for? Bezos has an incredible vision for humanity and hopes to help preserve the Earth, that involves millions of people living and working in space someday, starting with the moon! But before talking about that, we need to talk about Blue Origin, Bezos commercial aerospace manufacturer, and spaceflight services company that he founded in September 2000. And Bezos is pouring $1 billion per year into the company. Blue Origin has 2 short-term goals that they’re actively working on. The first is their space tourism is sending space tourist to the edge of space at an altitude of around 100km, on board the reusable suborbital launch vehicle the New Shepard. Blue Origin completed their 8th test flight of the New Shepard back in April, and they plan to launch a manned test flight the end of this year and to finally begin launching commercially in 2019. Oka,y and their 2nd short-term goal is the completion of the New Glenn Orbital Launch vehicle. The New Glenn will be a 2 or 3 stage rocket, the first stage will be reusable and the vehicle will have a payload capacity of 45,000 kg to LEO. Blue Origin recently purchased a landing ship for the first stage of the rocket which they will start to refit soon. The New Glenn rocket is currently being constructed at a brand-new facility on Merritt island near Spaceport Florida Launch Complex 36 and they plan to have the first launch in 2020. Now let’s focus on their long-term goal which is to help establish and support a permanent colony on the moon! And this is the first step towards Bezos vision of the future of space and society at large. Bezos vision for a moon colony is different from what you might imagine, it will not be for everyday people but more for so to serve as a base for major companies involved in Heavy Industries. You see, his radical idea is that in the coming decades heavy industry will start to shift to the moon and in 100 years, all heavy industry will be located on the moon driven by solar power. And at that point, Earth will be reserved for residential and light industrial use which he believes will ensure the health of the planet. Heavy industry may look a lot different in 100 years than how it looks today but it is defined as industries that are very capital-intensive, requiring a lot of machinery and equipment to produce, additionally they often have a large impact on the environment. Although ecosystem managers in Australia have worked hard to preserve the reefs, the past couple of decades have brought a new threat that can't be solved by any one country alone: human-induced global warming. Rising ocean temperatures have caused mass coral bleaching in coral reefs around the world, in every tropical ocean from the Caribbean to the South Pacific. This is now considered to be the biggest threat that coral reefs face, and they face many, including overfishing, pollution, storm damage, and invasive species. A Unique Creature on Earth That Can Never Be Killed

13:48
Earth is the only planet in our solar system, our galaxy, and potentially our entire universe that sustains life. Us humans believe we’re practically indestructible, but it turns out there’s a unique creature tougher than us that can’t be killed. Meet the tardigrade, one of the most resilient animals in the world – and possibly the universe. TIMESTAMPS It’s also called the water bear. 1:18 It’s really small. 2:20 It’s really, really old. 3:08 It can live anywhere. 4:02 It’s (mostly) harmless. 5:00 It’s practically unkillable. 6:04 It survives extinction events. 10:45 It might survive on another planet. 12:33 Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music SUMMARY -A tardigrade is commonly called a water bear because it is most often found in water, where it prefers to dwell, and because of its slow gait, which resembles that of a bear. -The biggest full-grown tardigrade is about 0.5 mm or about 1/50 of an inch, which is smaller than flea and tick larva. -The earliest fossils we have of the tardigrade species date back to the Cambrian period, some 530 million years ago. -Tardigrades have been found on the high-altitude peaks of the Himalayas, in deep trenches in the ocean, in mud volcanoes, and in tropical rainforests. -These unique creatures move into a new environment and help to establish an ecosystem, not unlike a gold prospector setting up shop out in the frontier. -Many tardigrades can enter a dehydrated state to survive almost any dangerous outside environment. They curl up into a barrel shape, their bodies become glass-like, and they put themselves in stasis, during which time they’re pretty much indestructible. -The tardigrade has survived all possible extinction events, from the Ordovician-Silurian extinction 440 million years ago all the way up to the extinction events that took out the dinosaurs. -The conditions on Mars are within the tardigrades’ capabilities to survive, assuming that a sufficient amount of water exists to support them. 10 Unique Animals You Won’t Believe Exist

09:42
10 strange and amazing animals that you have probably never heard of. Nature is truly full of surprises! We live in the twenty-first century, and all continents have already been discovered, all secrets of our planet revealed, all mountain peaks conquered. Just when you think you have seen it all, some new bizarre creature makes an appearance instantly restoring your faith in the impossible! TIMESTAMPS Mangalitsa Pig, a.k.a. “a pig in sheep’s clothing” 0:50 Rhinopithecus or golden snub-nosed monkey 1:33 Emperor tamarin 2:13 Patagonian Mara 3:04 Fluffy cow 3:52 Markhor Goat 4:44 Raccoon dog 5:23 Blue Footed Booby 6:25 Malayan Colugo 7:13 Venezuelan Poodle Moth 8:09 BONUS 8:56 SUMMARY - The birthplace of this curly-haired pig is Hungary where it was discovered in the mid-19th century. Due to the fleece covering this animal, it resembles a sheep, therefore, such a name! - The name of this species is roxellana, and there is a story behind it. It is believed that they were called this way after the supposedly snub-nosed courtesan of Suleiman the Magnificent (a 16th century Sultan of the Ottoman Empire). - They were called like this because of the resemblance of their mustache to that of German Emperor Wilhelm II. - Patagonia Mara is the fourth largest rodent on our planet. There are several interesting facts about them. Females often put offsprings into crèches for safety. - Fluffy cows are looked after by people whose work is to wash, dry and use products to style these animals, so they look as fluffy as they do! It is necessary to maintain them daily, and it will take months of regular grooming until they get this lovely look of kids toys. - If you see a creature which looks as if it’s trying to catch an alien radio signal from space, it’s most likely Markhor Goat. They can grow as long as 6 ft from head to tail! - If you can’t decide if you want to have a dog or a raccoon as a pet, we have just the thing for you - raccoon dog! Despite having raccoon-like markings on their fur, they are not very closely related to the North American raccoon. - Blue Footed Booby are to catch your eye if you ever visit the Galapagos Islands. They can look a bit clumsy and comical on land, but they are excellent at flying and swimming. - Colugo has a large gliding membrane (like a flying squirrel), and they can glide for long distances between trees standing far apart. - Even if the Poodle Moth may look as if it lives in Antarctica with all this fur, in fact, it comes from Venezuela, a tropical country. Its hairs don’t serve for heating. BONUS Cloud Antelope! This species lives in the clouds (that’s why such a name)! Its bright blue fur is the reflection of cloudless blue skies in the area of its habitat. Its diet consists of sun rays and candies... There are 80,000 dams in the U.S., but only 3 percent of those dams create hydroelectric power. Why do we build dams and how do they affect the environment? Read More: The Downside Of Dams: Is the Environmental Price of Hydroelectric Power Too High? http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-do-dams-hurt-rivers/ "Dams are a symbol of human ingenuity and engineering prowess-controlling the flow of a wild rushing river is no small feat." 10 Things You Didn't Know About Hydro-Power http://energy.gov/articles/top-10-things-you-didnt-know-about-hydropower " Hydropower is one of the oldest power sources on the planet, generating power when flowing water spins a wheel or turbine. It was used by farmers as far back as ancient Greece for mechanical tasks like grinding grain." Its mission was to unify and oversee the meteorological, climatological, hydrographic, and geodesic operations of the United States. It operated until 1970, when it was replaced by the new National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The first U.S. Government organization with the word "environment" in its title, ESSA was the first such organization chartered to study the global natural environment as whole, bringing together the study of the oceans with that of the both the lower atmosphere and the ionosphere. This allowed the U.S Government for the first time to take a comprehensive approach to studying the oceans and the atmosphere, also bringing together various technologies – ships, aircraft, satellites, radar, and communications systems – that could operate together in gathering data for scientific study.
