BitTorrent solves a different transport problem that TCP. TCP is designed to allow a pair of machines to exchange data quickly and reliably. In contrast, BitTorrent is designed for a large group of machines to exchange the same file quickly and reliably. Rather than optimizing a single path, BitTorrent tries to take advantage of all available network bandwidth by dividing the transfers needed to retrieve a single large file between multiple cooperating peers. This allows it to frequently outperform the typical model in which clients download only from a central server. Join Sebastian Castro as he outlines a simulation-based workflow for designing and controlling a two-legged walking robot. In this video, Sebastian shows how to model the rigid-body mechanics of a two-legged walking robot using Simscape Multibody™. You can use MATLAB variables to define the geometric and inertial parameters of the robot such that they can be quickly modified. Alternatively, you can import an existing robot model supported CAD platforms such as SolidWorks or Onshape, or from URDF files. To complete the robot walking simulation, Sebastian will also show how to add actuator motion and contact forces to the model. Sarah Drewes and Christoph Hahn of MathWorks set up an optimization task for a suspension assembly in Simulink Design Optimization™. They look at the mathematics involved and share best practices to obtain optimal results in an efficient manner. The underlying models are available on MATLAB Central File Exchange. Starting from there, an optimization problem is setup in a mathematically rigorous manner. Two different formulations are discussed as well as the relevancy for algorithms to solve the system. To support that, Sarah and Christoph show a simple demo that graphically illustrates how a smart choice of algorithm and method can prevent users from finding local optima instead of the global optimum. With regards to the suspension model, they go through the full workflow of setting the optimization problem up in Simulink Design Optimization, followed by choosing the appropriate solver to converge to the desired result in timely manner, and assessing the final results.

As the clock ticks down to the introduction of the new General Data Protection Regulation on the 25th of May 2018, you may be questioning whether your company’s data transfer and file sharing practices will be compliant under GDPR. If, like most organisations, you are using a mixture of in house scripts, bespoke tools and email attachments to transfer personally identifiable data, it is quite likely that you are NOT acting in accordance with the GDPR’S stringent requirements. Under GDPR, it’s not just in the case of a data breach that your business is exposed to the significant fines and potential reputational damage but also if you fail a data protection audit. Businesses are required under this regulation to do a full review of their technical systems to ensure they have data protection by design and by default and to ensure they can demonstrate compliant processes. But, Wizuda is here to help. Wizuda’s unique software solutions are built with privacy by design and include a multitude of powerful compliance features enabling your organisation to transfer data and share files in accordance with the GDPR requirements. Wizuda’s Compliant Data Transfer (CDT) solution goes beyond the benefits of traditional Managed File Transfer (MFT) providing One Central Platform to Assess, Anonymise, Control and Securely Transfer all internal and external data flows while Maps and Diagrams enable you to regain and retain full visibility and control of your data transfers. Evidence-based reporting directly links compliance reporting to the reality of data transfer operations while also satisfying the GDPR requirement to provide proof of compliant data transfer activity within the required timeframes. For the sharing of individual files containing sensitive, personal data, Wizuda’s Compliant File Share (CFS) solution provides a powerful alternative to insecure email attachments. Compliant File Share boasts many features which enable GDPR compliance including customisable impact assessments, data minimisation, easily implementable data retention policies and intelligent recipient lookups which helps to avoid the common human error of sending an email to the incorrect recipient. Embedding compliant file sharing behaviour in your business is easy with Wizuda’s CFS solution which has been specifically developed to enable your organisation to comply with the file sharing requirements set forth in the upcoming GDPR, but without compromising the speed and efficiency of your business operations. Getting the right technical solutions in place is one of the first steps to becoming compliant, and with Wizuda we make the rest of your journey to compliance that bit easier. To learn more about how Wizuda can help you mitigate the risk of a data protection breach and quickly pass data protection audits, request a demo today.

In a peer-to-peer (P2P) file exchange system, there is no central server that would store all available files and distribute them to users. Instead, the system self-organises in a way such that exchanges occurr directly between users, between peers. Here we represent the spreading of a file among users of such a system: each node represents a peer, and each peer is linked to the peers which provide the file to it. The dynamics consists in appearance of new nodes and links. In general, a new link arrives with links to one or several other peers, which means that they provide the file to it first. Afterwards, it may be linked to other peers because they provide the file to it, or because it itself provides the file to them. One may observe many facts in this video. First, it clearly shows that many peers are linked to only one other, which means that they asked for the file to this peer but never provided it. This may be due to interrupted downloads, or to free-riding: it is well known that many peers refuse to provide files although they download some. More interestingly, one may notice that we observe cascade phenomena: a peer provides the file to another one, which provides it in turn to another one, and so on. This is essential to the system, as peers generally disconnect rather rapidly, and this illustrates an important feature of peer-to-peer exchanges: even though the initial provider is not in the system anymore, the file is still available. One may also notice that some peers appear disconnected from the others. This means that they are provider of the file when they arrive in the system: they probably downloaded it previously or elsewhere. (New nodes and links appear in red; afterwards, the color of nodes indicates their time of arrival: the first arrived nodes are white, and then darker and darker.)

Organizations exchange files with their customers and partners in many different ways. Their employees may send a customer a file that is too large to fit in the corporate mail system, so they use a purpose-built solution to send files to that person. Employees may also be sending files to systems, and there are other data transfer combinations such as systems sending files like monthly statements or human resource documents to employees or customers. Finally, organizations often have systems that send files such as inventory data or other large files to their business partner systems on a scheduled basis. Workflows in an organization that relies on file transfers are typically grouped into two areas. There are those in which people such as employees and customers are involved in the workflows, and there are those in which systems are involved in the workflows. From a people-centered workflow perspective, it is important for IT departments to provide tools. For instance, when employees need to send files that are too large to go through the corporate email system, if the IT organization does not provide tools to those employees to send files to their customers, then employees are going to go rogue. They are going to use Internet services that send files. These services may not be approved and they may not be secure. The organization loses its visibility and control over those file deliveries. Employees are going to get their jobs done whether IT provides the tools to them or not. Systems are typically much more complicated in setting up workflows. They are based on scripts, and each workflow that needs to be created may require a series of scripts to get the file from the internal systems all the way through to the external partner. In one state government, for example, they have tens of thousands of workflows in which their systems participate. Each one of those workflows requires different scripts. From a system perspective, workflows are very difficult and expensive, and they do not afford a lot of agility. They are very purpose-built and fragile. Since workflow is comprised of both people-based and system-based file transfers, organizations have typically implemented two different silos. They employ two different purpose-built systems; one is for people to send data, and the other is for systems to send data. Utilizing two silos immediately doubles the complexity and cost, and it reduces the organization’s compliance and central visibility. If organizations do not provide tools to employees, employees tend to go rogue and use unapproved Internet services. Unapproved technology puts an organization at risk of privacy breaches. A central platform approach unifies workflows by providing centralized control and visibility. In addition, there are techniques that allow systems to eliminate the need for scripting when sending files to their partners. For example, in that state government that utilizes tens of thousands of workflows, the scripting of thousands of workflows is eliminated. Minimizing the complexity of the systems that send files to partners drives down cost. It makes it much more agile as well, to stand up new workflows as business needs evolve.

See more from the AT&T Archives at http://techchannel.att.com/archives The purpose of this film was to show employees, back in 1951, how calls were automatically switched through an SxS office. This film gives a general appreciation of the importance, complexity, and cost of switching equipment in an average 1950s telephone office. The path of a call is illustrated as it runs through a demonstration unit. "Careful adherance to Bell System maintenance practices" is stressed. While this is only part I, Part II eventually showed the equipment in various types of use, and Part II showed the internal circuit operations. Switchers today are digital and look drastically different. These systems at this time were still not even transistorized, so this film shows a system that's not only years back in time, but many generations back in terms of technology. This lesson will illustrate how trade flows should lead to appreciation and depreciation of currencies in a floating exchange rate system, and then explain how in the case of China, central bank policy aimed at buying large quantities of US government debt keeps the supply of Chinese currency high in the US and the demand for US dollars high in China. This means the dollar remains stronger than it otherwise might relative to the Chinese RMB, contributing to the persistent trade deficits the US exhibits in its trade with China. This video chronicles the trials and tribulations of our benevolent engineers as they are swung from great success to great despair and back on their way to building a drone that can fly itself with MATLAB or Simulink. This is the second episode of a series of videos about the 2013 MathWorks Summer Research Internship project during which an automated autonomous emergency response system for humanitarian aid was developed. First a MATLAB controller for the Parrot AR.Drone is built and used to fly the drone between offices. Next, a Simulink controller is designed using more formal control engineering principles. At the end of the video, the Simulink controller shows to perform well in the face of some pretty rigorous perturbation testing The drone can be given a set of waypoints and flies itself to these locations by using drone sensor information only. The MATLAB or Simulink controller runs on a notebook that connects to the drone via an ad hoc WiFi network. Control of the drone can be handed over to a smartphone app while the drone is hovering in mid air. This way we can automatically send the drone to an emergency responder in the field who may, for example, use the drone camera for visual inspection after an earthquake. The MATLAB and Simulink controllers are available from the MATLAB Central File Exchange.

We present a phase-field model for fracture in Kirchoff-Love thin shells using the local maximum-entropy (LME) meshfree method. Since the crack is a natural outcome of the analysis it does not require an explicit representation and tracking, which is advantage over techniques as the extended finite element method that requires tracking of the crack paths. The geometric description of the shell is based on statistical learning techniques that allow dealing with general point set surfaces avoiding a global parametrization, which can be applied to tackle surfaces of complex geometry and topology. We show the flexibility and robustness of the present methodology for two examples: plate in tension and a set of open connected pipes. In this example we show the flexibility and robustness of the present methodology to deal with a thin shell of complex topology and complex crack path. The middle surface of the shell body consists of a set of six connected open pipes. The boundary curve at the bottom is fixed, whereas the top boundary curve is incrementally displaced in the upward (0, 0, 1) direction. Material parameters have been selected as: Young's modulus E=10MN/mm2, Poisson's ratio nu= 0.3, Griffith's critical energy Gc=1N/mm. While the thickness is t=0.005mm, the regularization parameter for the phase field is ele=0.03mm, whereas the high of the tubes is L=3 (characteristic length). The discretization of the geometry (geometric markers) and the control points consists of two arrangements of 25,668 and 100,380 unstructured set of points respectively. The original coarse point-set has been obtained from the MATLAB central file exchange and subsequently subdivide it through Loop's subdivision algorithm by using Paraview. The phase field is represented as a colormap on the reference configuration (left) and the physical deformation obtained has been amplified by a factor of 20 to give a better idea of the resulting displacements (right). http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.tafmec.2013.12.002 https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Daniel_Millan2

EXP: “How to file a complaint”. A simple guide to help you file a complaint in case you have a legitimate problem when buying an item or service. And with you today… PST: Professor KnowItAll… EXP :Ok, Professor KnowItAll, go ahead… PST: Thank you, thank you… Well, let me tell you. If you have a problem with a purchase, the first thing you should do is complain to all your friends on social media… EXP: No, not at all! I have the Consumer Action Handbook here, and it says the first thing you should do is inform the seller about the problem. Most complaints are actually resolved that way. And do it as soon as possible because some stores offer limited time for returns and refunds. If your problem is not resolved on the first try, ask to speak with a supervisor or manager. Sometimes it’s just a matter of knowing who to talk to in order to resolve the issue. PST: That’s what I was saying … So in other words, if you didn’t like the final score of the game you watched last night, you should complain immediately so you can get your money back… EXP : No! It doesn’t work that way… I think I’ll need to be more clear…Look, Professor, if, for example, you buy a television set, and you carefully take it home, then you unpack it and the screen is cracked, then you should make a complaint at the place where it was purchased. PST: And if I didn’t like the game that I watched on that television, can I return it? EXP: He’ll never understand… Back to the topic of how to file a complaint… PST: You should meet my friend Luis; he’s an expert at complaining! EXP : Professor…So if the complaint is not resolved after contacting the seller, you should begin a formal process by writing to the business in question, and express your complaint following these recommendations: One : Start by keeping a record of everything that’s happened. Two : Contact the seller or manufacturer. Explain the problem in detail, but be brief and to the point, and state whether you want a refund or an exchange, and how long you are willing to wait for a response. Don’t be threatening or rude. That won’t help you. Provide your name, address and your phone number so they can contact you. Three : If the problem does not get resolved there are various other options that you can consider, like contacting trade associations or national consumer organizations. Four : You can also contact local or state consumer protection offices, or the closest BBB . PST: Oh yes, of course, Big Bad Business EXP: No professor the BBB is the Better Business Bureau, which is a nonprofit organization that helps resolve consumer complaints. PST: Now everything is starting to become clear. If I have a complaint about a product that I’ve purchased, I should call to complain, and if it’s not resolved, I should write to the seller. And if it is still not resolved, I should contact the closest consumer protection agency … EXP: Very good, that’s right. And by the way, there are also small claims courts in case none of these options resolve the problem. EXP: Is it clear now, Professor? PST: Crystal clear. EXP: Professor, if you have any more questions, visit USA.gov. They will guide you to find contact information for businesses and manufacturers, and a sample letter of complaint. You can also download or request a free copy of the Consumer Action Handbook, for more tips. PST: OK, but I have one more question. EXP: Yes … about the Handbook or about how to file a complaint? PST: No, not that. I want to know if we’re done because I’m running a little late for the game… EXP: Yes Professor, but remember: for more information and to request your free Consumer Action Handbook, visit USA.gov or in Spanish at GobiernoUSA.gov.
