Open-end mutual funds are bought and sold on demand at their net asset value, or NAV, which is based on the value of the fund's underlying stocks and is generally calculated at the close of every trading day. Investors can enter and exit these schemes anytime. Closed-end funds have a fixed number of units and are traded among investors on an exchange. Investors can invest in these kind of fund's during a fixed New Fund offer period only. These funds have a lock in and can be traded at stock exchange where liquidity may not be high. Welcome to the Investors Trading Academy talking glossary of financial terms and events. Our word of the day is “Open Ended Investment Company (OEIC)” Primarily in the United Kingdom, a mutual fund in which the number of shares may be increased or decreased depending on the amount of money invested in the company. This means that the fund's capitalization is not fixed, and changes upon the demand of shareholders. In other words, an open-end investment company issues new stock when people invest in it, and buys back old shares when investors want to be rid of them. The latter is referred to as redeeming one's share of the mutual fund. The value of each share is the net portfolio value divided by the number of shares. In the United States, this investment vehicle is usually called an open-end mutual fund. The company pools money it raises by selling shares in a fund and the fund's manager invests in stock, bonds, money market instruments, or a combination of these asset classes to meet the fund's specific objectives. However, the open-end company may stop selling new shares in a fund if it decides the fund has grown too large to invest additional assets effectively. In contrast, when a closed-end investment company creates a fund, it issues only a limited number of shares, and those shares trade on the secondary market as shares of stock do. If you purchase fund shares directly from the open-end investment company, you pay the current net asset value (NAV) per share. You also redeem shares at the NAV that's current at the time you sell. If you buy shares through a broker or other investment professional, you may pay an up-front sales charge, or load. By Barry Norman, Investors Trading Academy - ITA

The terms "OEIC" and "ICVC" are used interchangeably with different investment managers favouring one over the other. In the UK OEICs are the preferred legal form of new open-ended investment over the older unit trust. As an open-ended company the manager must create shares when money is invested and redeem shares as requested by shareholders. As with other collective investments, ICVCs' main function is to make money for the shareholders. This is achieved via investing in different asset classes such as equities, fixed-interest investments, and property. By using economies of scale they facilitate access to professional investment management for small investors. OEICs were developed to be similar to European SICAVs and U.S. mutual funds.

A close-ended fund is something where they’re generally are no redemption capabilities. I mean you’re in that fund for its lifetime. Now on an open-ended fund, you have more of an ability to request your money back but then you get into the issue of, what is the price that the fund manager is charging for the investor to come in and buy the shares of that fund?

Mr. Burman, who co-chairs the ALFI's real estate subcommittee, highlights the importance of real estate investment funds in Luxembourg compared to other alternative funds, attributing the growth of the real estate sector in Luxembourg over the last 10 years to the ability to construct multi-sector, multi-national funds that can invest not only in a single country or a single type of real estate asset such as offices, but in a wide variety of assets and countries. Although funds are predominantly invested in Europe there are increasing numbers of funds investing in the Americas and Asia and Luxembourg now represents 16% of real estate investment vehicles around the world. Mr Burman then looks at key trends revealed by ALFI's REIF Survey (Real Estate Investment Funds Survey), the seventh in the series. He reveals that 2011 saw continued activity despite the financial crisis, with a further 26 funds being launched. Funds have continued to use the traditional Luxembourg vehicles such as the SIFs and the Part II funds, and they are being used in a variety of different ways, generally offered to institutions and generally they are closed end funds, but all the different flavours are available in the Luxembourg market. Finally ahead of the AIFMD bill being transposed into Luxembourg law Mr Burman looks the options it provides for real estate funds.

Today, I interview Michael Yogg, author of the new book Passion for Reality. Its about Paul Cabot, a pioneer of the mutual fund industry. In 1920s Boston, Cabot cofounded State Street Investment Corporation, one of the first open-ended mutual funds. He shepherded the fund through frenzied markets, the crash of 1929 and into the Great Depression. As Washington turned to investigating and then regulating the fledgling mutual fund industry, Cabot played a central role. The book does more than tell Cabot's story. It gives us a front-row seat on the emergence of this important industry.

Exclusive interview with Heartland Advisors' Chief Investment Officer, Bill Nasgovitz. Heartland Advisors is a boutique, independent investment firm in Milwaukee, WI. Its value-focused, actively managed product suite includes distinct U.S. and international investing strategies, which are offered through five mutual funds and four separately managed accounts. Heartland Advisors' approach is consistent across all of its products, however, each portfolio serves a distinct role and is constructed accordingly. Some portfolios emphasize dividends to mitigate volatility and to provide a modest stream of income while others seek to diversify risk and increase opportunity by holding stocks with varying market caps. The ultimate goal with each is to provide superior risk adjusted returns and limit downside participation.

THANK U, NEXT Well... it has been a WEEK if i've ever seen one. This was not really the plan I had for my first video back after a 2.5 year hiatus but HERE WE ARE. If you haven't already, please SUBSCRIBE to my channel (you know, because i'm unemployed now.) https://t.co/VngHLZnqtG Thank you all for the support during this crazy time and of course throughout the years. None of us would be here without you and I still have hope that the Clevver brand will LIVE ON! I know a lot of you are confused so I hope this video gives you a bit more context. I also truly hope no one mistakes my sarcasm and humor in this video for not caring about the situation or being insensitive about how many people this situation has affected. Please understand that sometimes when things get SO bad... there's really no other way to cope then to find the humor in even the darkest of times (at least for me). I love and support everyone who lost their job this past week and wish them nothing but the best in the future because if there's one thing DEFY did right, it's bring together some amazingly talented human beings that have been such an important part of my life these last 6.5 years. As I said in the video, the future of Clevver, Smosh, and the other properties is still uncertain though everyone is remaining hopeful that they will find new homes soon!
