What is a trade deficit? Well, it all has to do with imports and exports and, well, trade. This week Jacob and Adriene walk you through the basics of imports, exports, and exchange. So, you remember the specialization and trade thing, right? So, that leads to imports and exports. Economically, in the aggregate, this is usually a good thing. Globalization and free trade do tend to increase overall wealth. But not everybody wins. Crash Course is on Patreon! TPP, NAFTA, GAAT, WTO -- the concepts that govern our global economy and international trade are confusing to say the least, but affect us all. And why is there so much conflict around trade deals, which became a focal point during the 2016 US Presidential election? Haley Edwards breaks down the history of trade and explains how the idea of global trade has transformed in the past decades. Haley Edwards is an author and correspondent at TIME. Her book, Shadow Courts: The Tribunals That Rule Global Trade came out in 2016. Previously, she was an editor at the Washington Monthly and a foreign correspondent in the Middle East and the former Soviety Union, where she reported for the Los Angeles Times, The Atlantic, The New Republic, and other publications. She studied philosophy at Yale University and journalism at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism in New York. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

How We Work Online: https://youtu.be/Jz2-LjjNpME This video is all about how to travel full-time, and long-term with tons of tips for finding cheap and free accommodation, keeping a daily budget, and earning money as you travel. The first thing we suggest is looking up the cost of living in some of your favourite destinations. You can stretch your dollar by traveling to countries with a cheaper cost of living, or with a weaker currency than your own. A few websites to help you with this research are: - Numbeo: https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/ - Nomad List: https://nomadlist.com/ - Currency Exchange: https://xe.com/ Your next step is to reduce your expenses. One of the most costly parts of travel, aside from getting to your destination, is accommodation. Here are some ideas for finding work exchange opportunities (volunteer in exchange for free room and board), and free/cheap places to stay. - WWOOF (working on organic farms): http://wwoof.net/ - helpx: https://www.helpx.net/ - Workaway: https://www.workaway.info/ - House Sitting: we made a video with our favourite house sitting sites here: https://youtu.be/OLM5IakKCYk - Home Exchange: https://www.homeexchange.com/en/ - Couchsurfing: https://www.couchsurfing.com/ - Au Pair: https://www.aupairworld.com/en Working Holiday Visas are another great option to consider if you want to earn money (not just volunteer) when you travel. They're typically only available to people under 30 (sometimes 35). Check the application guidelines for the country you want to visit to learn more! If you're too old to apply for a working holiday visa, you might consider finding online work, or becoming self-employed. Many of the world's biggest Exponential Organizations (ExOs) have scaled beyond their wildest dreams using this “secret currency” – http://bit.ly/ExO-Algorithms Many assume this “currency” is limited to large tech companies, but the reality is it lies within the reach of any executive, entrepreneur, or team leader. This article by Salim Ismail, Founding Executive Director of Singularity University, reveals what this “secret currency” is, and how it’s changing the way businesses serve their customers; from driverless cars to customized product recommendations, fraud detection, diagnosing diseases, and more: http://bit.ly/ExO-Algorithms

When people compete for grants, subsidies, and other government handouts, economists see a phenomenon called rent seeking. The "rent" is the money being offered. When government gives money away, the people who compete for it incur costs—sometimes more money will be spent in total trying to compete for a grant than the amount of money being given away. These costs are rarely considered in policymaking, but perhaps they should be. One major cost of rent seeking, as Prof. Michael Munger points out, may be that the government awards money to organizations with the best lobbyists, not necessarily those providing the best services.

But just how much of what you might read online is true? The Rothschild family came from Frankfurt, where the house they had lived in for generations was marked with the sign of the Red Shield (Roth + Schild). Like many Jewish families at the time, the Rothschilds were involved in finance, specifically currency exchange and collectible coins. That was the business of the Rothschild patriarch: Mayer Rothschild. His success in this business attracted many wealthy customers, including Wilhelm, the future ruler of Hesse. Mayer managed Wilhelm's fortune and successfully protected it from Napoleon's invasion, for which he was greatly rewarded. Mayer had 5 sons, which he spread throughout Europe. Each established his own family and banking business in the five great European capitals at the time: London, Paris, Frankfurt, Vienna and Naples. Throughout the 19th century the five brothers and (eventually) their heirs cooperated in numerous financing projects, lending money to governments and the nobility. By the end of the 19th century the wealth of just the French branch was the equivalent of $500 million today. The 20th century, however, wasn't kind to the Rothschilds. The Naples and Frankfurt branches became effectively extinct when their last patriarchs produced no male heirs. A more sinister fate befell the branches in Vienna and Paris, who had the vast majority of their wealth confiscated in the course of the Second World War. Only the branch in London survived intact, and today it is still a powerful force in Britain. At present the wealth of the Rothschilds is hidden in a series of shell companies originating in Switzerland. It is unclear exactly how rich they are, but by all visible measures they appear to have lost the majority of their richest during the 20th century. Thus, ironically, one of the most popular subjects of conspiracy theories today has instead been on the decline for well over a century. Under the kind patronage of Nagabhushanam Peddi, Dan Supernault, Samuel Patterson, James Gallagher & Brett Gmoser.

Sing up to get exclusive Tutorials, Drum Samples and more: https://www.producelikeapro.com/free-recording-mixing-bundle/ Follow Produce Like A Pro On Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/producelikeapro/ The question I get asked more than any other question is: ‘How Do I Make Money in the Music Industry?’ Whether you are a Band or an Artist or working behind the scenes as a Producer, Engineer, Mixer or Songwriter, the music industry has changed dramatically over the last 15 years. Back in the 90s and early 2000s, the main way of generating income was selling records. And the best way to sell records was to land a Major Label Deal. Bands and artists honed their songs, sound and look to garner the interest of a major Label A&R. Once you landed a deal, labels cut huge advance checks for you to produce your album and music videos, along with providing a big budget to promote your music. With the digital age, sales record sales have dropped dramatically and are no longer the main way to generate income in music, which caused a drastic change in the music industry. How has the music industry changed and how can we adapt to these changes to to continue to make money in music? That's what I'm discussing in today's video. It's is a comprehensive collection of the best ways to make money in music, whether you are a producer, artist, mixer or songwriter. Have a marvellous time making music! What is globalization? Is globalization a good thing or not. Well, I have an answer that may not surprise you: It's complicated. This week, Jacob and Adriene will argue that globalization is, in aggregate, good. Free trade and globalization tend to provide an overall benefit, and raises average incomes across the globe. The downside is that it isn't good for every individual in the system. In some countries, manufacturing jobs move to places where labor costs are lower. And some countries that receive the influx of jobs aren't prepared to deal with it, from a regulatory standpoint. Anyway, Jacob and Adriene can explain the whole thing to you in 10 minutes. *** Crash Course is on Patreon! Community service is one of the five core values at First Exchange Bank in Marion County. All employees are encouraged to be actively involved in community organizations. First Exchange pays membership dues for its employees to civic clubs like Rotary and Kiwanis. The bank provides financial support for its employees’ community service endeavors and allows them to volunteer during work time when possible and use bank resources such as copiers and paper. The bank partnered with the Kiwanis of Mannington to raise $10,000 worth of supplies after the 2016 flooding. Employees helped load the truck and drove to Clay County to volunteer at the distribution center one Saturday. Six employees volunteer to run the K Closet at North Marion High School, which provides food, clothing, toiletries and school supplies to students in need. The bank donates money and supplies for this on-going project. The relationships employees develop with community organizations allow the bank to support a wide variety of civic, school and church organizations while encouraging philanthropy and good will. First Exchange Bank donates thousands of dollars each year to support everything from sports teams to cultural activities. Thanks to First Exchange’s culture of giving back, hunger has been reduced, families have been helped during disasters, children have received Christmas presents, people have avoided eviction, and kids have had a chance to play sports or sing in a choir.

We can think of token economies as a way for people to mimic the social dynamics found in certain highly social creatures like bees, ants, and termites as a way to promote and ideally achieve effective collective organization. By recording individual actions on a distributed database the blockchain makes it possible for people to coordinate themselves indirectly and collaborate on a global scale, without any centralized authority or hierarchical structure. This is something quite new in human civilization until very recently the basic premise has been that order and organization are achieved by centralized authority. https://twitter.com/systemsacademy

Banks are a riddle wrapped up in an enigma. We all kind of know that they do stuff with money we don’t understand, while the last crisis left a feeling of deep mistrust and confusion. We try to shed a bit of light onto the banking system. Why were banks invented, why did they cause the last crisis and are there alternatives? The expansion of activity – including financial transactions – by U.S.-based nonprofits overseas continues to increase, raising a complex host of U.S. and foreign regulatory, tax, and other issues. These international financial transactions are subject to an array of requirements, which can pose significant risks to U.S.-based nonprofits if not followed. This program – led by two Venable attorneys who work extensively with nonprofit organizations and others in this area – covers topics such as: • Foreign exchange controls • Scrutiny of foreign funding of U.S.-based nonprofits; requirements for domestic entities receiving funding from abroad • Banking controls and accountability, including challenges to having nonresidents as signatories on local currency bank accounts • Cash transaction risks and procedures • Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) licensing requirements for U.S.-based nonprofits making payments to persons in foreign countries subject to sanctions • Recent sanctions against Russia • Taxation and information reporting requirements • Transfer pricing issues • Differences between local country accounting rules and U.S. accounting rules For any U.S.-based nonprofit operating overseas, this is a program you will not want to miss. The organizations strategic plan you wrote about in Week 2 calls for an aggressive growth plan, requiring investment in facilities and equipment, growth in productivity, and labor over the next five years. It is your responsibility to determine how the U.S economy during this five year period will impact such an aggressive growth plan. To do so, you should: Develop a 2,100-word economic outlook forecast that includes the following: Analyze the history of changes in GDP, savings, investment, real interest rates, and unemployment and compare to forecast for the next five years. Discuss how government policies can influence economic growth. Analyze how monetary policy could influence the long-run behavior of price levels, inflation rates, costs, and other real or nominal variables. Describe how trade deficits or surpluses can influence the growth of productivity and GDP. Discuss the importance of the market for loanable funds and the market for foreign-currency exchange to the achievement of the strategic plan. Recommend, based on your above findings, whether the strategic plan can be achieved and provide support. Use a minimum of 3 peer-reviewed sources from the University Library.

Information and subscription on http://www.usievents.com Banking, money, finance, insurance are all terms that are familiar, but these are terms of the last century. Terms being used by millennials are around ideas, value, exchange, sharing. As the digital age reshapes the whole structure of commerce and trade, what will the outcome look like? How will society and technology rethink money and finance? Will banks and traditional financial firms be relevant in this new world? Chris Skinner independent commentator on the financial markets through his blog the Finanser provides a view of the next decade of change and how it will reshape the structure of financial services globally. He analyses the story of connected finance through ten phases and four big development generations. Chris Skinner gives us some input to understand why banks, companies have to go digital to not die. For some of them it’s a big deal: most of banks have been built years ago, when paper was still a technology. It’s all about re-building their own business model. His point of view is that in a few years, it won’t be a question of having money, but being part of a network to send and receive money easily. In this talk, Chris Skinner allows us to have a better idea of this new economy and to understand the shift we are living: going from this historical financial system to programs, to physical interactions to numerical ones. Anti-Money-Laundering, Counterterrorism Financing and Financial Crime: The Critical Role of Financial Institutions and How It Affects You Talk by Hue Dang ’92, Head of Asia for the Association of Certified Anti-Money-Laundering Specialists. Media coverage in the last several years of financial penalties against global banks such as BNP Paribas ($8.9 billion) or HSBC ($1.92 billion) for money-laundering and sanctions violations—to name just a few examples—highlights the increasing risks to banks as they conduct their normal business. We now live in an era of international money-laundering controls. The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, revolutionized the anti-money-laundering (AML) field and brought into stark relief the threat of the movement and disguising of funds destined for the support of terrorism throughout the world, introducing a whole new effort to combat the financing of terrorism (CFT). As a result of the governmental reaction in virtually all countries, banks, non-bank financial institutions and nonfinancial businesses face tougher national and international legal requirements and harsher penalties than ever before. By the same token, the regulators of those businesses, law-enforcement agents and prosecutors also face greater challenges and responsibilities in their work. The discussion of what this means to you will include the economic and social consequences of money laundering; the latest regulatory developments in the U.S., Asia and Europe; challenges in effective AML/CFT implementation; and key lessons learned from recent cases. Presented by the Class of 1992.

John Jordan, Province of British Columbia & Stephen Curran , CloudCompass Computing, Inc. Learn about the Province of British Columbia's experience deploying the first Hyperledger Indy based production ecosystem. The Verifiable Organizations Network (VON) enables governments and organizations to exchange data in trustworthy ways based on open standards and technology. VON's founding members are governments who are, by law, trusted issuers of data about organizations. The Province of British Columbia, Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada have come together to create the initial services needed to establish VON. VON's founders have delivered new Indy-based open source components which form VON's backbone. TheOrgBook is a publicly accessible repository of verifiable claims about organizations. VON-X enables services to verify and issue credentials. We present the Why, What and How including our strategy for bootstrapping VON using a two-sided market strategy.

As seen on Outnumbered The panel on "Outnumbered" discussed a top North Carolina congressman's claim that whistleblowers came forward to him about potential illicit activity at the Clinton Foundation. Melissa Francis said Rep. Mark Meadows, a Republican who represents the Smokies, told Fox News that three people have offered him "hundreds of pages of evidence of illegal activity." Francis said Meadows -- the chair of the conservative House Freedom Caucus -- plans to hold a hearing next week in the oversight subcommittee he chairs to look into the allegations. She said that "evidence has been there forever" leading to the conclusion that the Clinton Foundation is indeed rife with corrupt dealings. Francis said the government of Abu Dhabi -- capital of the United Arab Emirates -- paid former President Clinton $1 million to give a pair of speeches while Hillary Clinton was secretary of state. Shortly thereafter, Etihad, a top Emirati airline, received special approval to fly non-stop to the United States and receive customs-related perks only offered to regional flights from Canada, Ireland and the Caribbean, Francis said.

Taking the internet by storm, based on Peter Schweizer’s bestselling book!!! Hillary Clinton went from being “dead broke” after leaving the White House to amassing a net worth of over $150M, with over $2B in donations to their foundation. Clinton Cash: The Untold Story of How and Why Foreign Governments and Businesses Helped Make Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton Rich. New York Times bestselling book by Peter Schweizer, in which he investigates donations made to the Clinton Foundation by foreign entities, paid speeches made by Bill and Hillary Clinton, and the Clintons' personal enrichment since leaving the White House in 2001. Mr. Schweizer claims: foreign governments and organizations that donated to the Clinton Foundation, and to the Clintons themselves in speaking fees, received favors in exchange from the State Department, headed by then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Ed Pilkington, The Guardian, wrote that "Even in the hyper-partisan world of American political publishing, the storm generated by the latest book about the Clintons has been impressive." James Freeman, The Wall Street Journal "Almost every page of the fascinating Clinton Cash...will be excruciating reading for partisans on both sides of the aisle" and that "The fact that even liberal media outlets are taking the book seriously suggests that a post-election payday is getting harder to achieve." "This film was not made to make money. It was made to alert the public to the appalling — and dangerous — corruption of the Clintons.... Who could deny the malignant corruption of a couple that used their political power to make money by propping up the world’s worst dictators, cutting down the rain forests, selling off our nuclear resources to our enemies, and bartering off the assets of the poorest nations on earth while their people live in abject poverty? Stopping the Clintons is not about being a good conservative or a good progressive. It’s about being a decent human being." Andrew Breitbart Eleanor Clift,The Daily Beast: The Clintons have a standard template for pushing back, and they’re going to use it to make questions about their finances seem part of the vast right-wing conspiracy, but character assassination only goes so far. Galactic Connection: The chicanery and fraud of the Clinton Foundation is absolutely revolting, especially in the case of the socalled Haitian earthquake relief effort. It’s sickening and appalling how the super rich were enabled to become richer in the wake of a major natural disaster in the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. These lowdown grifters cannot be allowed to occupy the White House again! So political campaigns are a pretty big deal in the United States. For instance the 2012 presidential election clocked in at the most expensive ever - at around $6 billion dollars! Needless to say, money plays a very big role in American elections. So today, Craig is going to take a look at why we have campaigns in the first place, why the campaign seasons run for so long, and of course why campaigns cost so much.
