UK Duty & VAT Explained
When buying goods from outside the EU you’ll have to pay duties and taxes to UK Customs to have them released into the country. Most shipments are subject to Duty and VAT and these are the two main costs to understand before importing. What Duty Will I have to Pay? The amount of Duty you’ll have to pay depends on the declared value of the goods and the type of product that you're importing. Each product is given a different duty rating or percentage. This is normally between zero and 12%. You’ll pay the appropriate percentage for your product on the value of the import. What about Import VAT? VAT on an Import is payable, nearly always at the standard rate, on the amount that you pay for your goods, plus the shipping cost and the Duty. You are effectively paying VAT on everything that it costs for you to buy the goods and get them into circulation in the UK. Give me an Example It’s slightly more complicated than this but crudely… let’s assume you pay your supplier $1500 (we’ll call it £1000) for your goods, the UK Duty rating for these particular goods is 5% and the shipping quote is £350. The UK Duty will be 5% of the cost of your goods. 5% of £1000 is £50. VAT is then payable on the cost of the goods, plus the shipping cost, plus the Duty. These total £1400 and VAT at 20% of that is £280. Cost of Goods : £1000 Duty Rating : 5% Shipping Cost : £350 UK Duty : 5% of £1000 = £50.00 Import VAT : £1000 + £350 + 50 = £1400; 20% VAT on £1400 = £280 On this example the total duties and taxes payable to import these goods would be £330.00 (£50 for UK Duty and £280 for VAT) in addition to the £350 shipping cost. Calculate Landed Cost Excel Template for Import Export, inc. freight, customs, duty and taxes.
Download Landed Cost Excel template calculator to help you work out the landed cost per item: https://www.incodocs.com/blog/how-to-calculate-the-landed-cost-of-imported-goods/ Subscribe for Global Trade Tips! When you contact overseas suppliers they will send you a quotation or Proforma Invoice for their products. Before you place a new order, you must clearly understand the Landed Cost or Landed Price of the products by the time they are delivered through to your door. The Exporter's quote or invoice will usually be Ex-Works (EXW), Free-on-Board (FOB), Cost and Freight (CFR/CIF), which means that there will be extra charges that the consignee (importer) will have to pay. This is common in ecommerce, seafreight and airfreight shipping. Read the below to understand how to calculate the Landed Cost of your goods: - Receive a detailed product Quotation from your supplier, that includes IncoTerm, Pricing, Currency, Product sizes and weights - Meet with a freight forwarder to get a detailed quote for all shipping and other associated costs - Confirm the International Seafreight costs from Port of Loading to - Port of Discharge (usually in USD) - Understand the total of all of the local port handling charges, customs clearance, import documentation, trucking delivery charges etc - Find the product's HS Code and confirm the applicable import duty (%) for each product to be imported - Confirm the applicable import taxes (%) that are charged in the country of import - Find a currency exchange agent and understand your actual currency exchange rates and costs - Convert all product costs, seafreight, customs clearance, local handling costs etc into your local currency - Add all seafreight and local handling costs to the product costs. You can split up the costs over the total cubic size (m3) or weight, whatever is greater - Apply the import duty rate to your products to get your Landed Cost Ex Tax. Then add the import taxes to your final Landed Cost Importers and Exporters use www.incodocs.com to create and share shipping documents.

5 Mistakes New Importers Make When Importing Products from China
Discover the 5 mistakes new importers make when they are importing products from China. Don’t make the same mistakes! Get our free ebook: http://wholesaleted.com/4-step Freightos: http://wholesaleted.com/go/freightos First mistake importers make when importing products from China: Assuming that shipping by sea will be the cheapest option A lot of new importers think they will save money if they ship by sea rather than air. On the surface it seems cheaper as importers usually pay around 60 cents/KG when shipping via sea, compared to the $7/KG when shipping by air courier. Unfortunately what they don’t realize is that the reason it’s that cheap is because when shipping via sea, you ship via container, and you need to rent an entire container. They are very large and require you to be shipping hundreds of KGs to be making it worth your time. If you are an Amazon private label seller, you are unlikely to have enough stock being shipped to fill a container by at least 60-70% so it will be cheaper to ship by air. When shipping by air, you have two options: 1) Air freight 2) Air courier Air courier is when you have your items shipped door-to-door. It is the easiest but the most expensive per KG (although in smaller quantities it is cheaper). Air freight is when you have your items flown from one airport to the other. You will need to organize other additional services: * Having the items delivered to the airport * A customs broker * Having the items delivered from the airport to the final location. There are a lot of fixed fees with this which means it becomes cheaper to use air freight with larger quantities. To figure out which option will be cheaper for you, I recommend using Freightos. Second mistake importers make when importing products from China: Not using the Metric system In China, they use the Metric system and not the Imperial system. So be sure to use KGs instead of lbs and CM instead of inches. It’s important to remember that when working with Chinese suppliers that they expect you to work on their terms and their timeframes. It can be frustrating, but it’s worth it for the cheap Chinese products you import! Third mistake importers make when importing products from China: Using Less than Container Load for shipping When shipping by sea, you have two options: 1) FCL which stands for Full Container Load 2) LCL which stands for Less than Container Load Inexperienced importers fall for the trap of shipping with LCL because they see that the price are extremely cheap. What they don’t realize is that these LCL companies have special deals with the ports to charge you extremely high Destination Service Charges. The LCL companies then make their money in the form of a “rebate” which is essentially commissions/kickbacks. Destination Service Charges are usually priced per-container and cost between $500-$1000 per container for ports in the USA. But when shipping by LCL you end up paying a high fee per cubic meters. It means that you often end up paying a fee comparable to shipping an entire container. Don’t fall for this trap: If you can’t break even with FCL, then ship by air. Fourth mistake importers make when importing products from China: not calculating the correct duties you will need to pay When you import products from China, you will need to pay duties at the border. If you don’t calculate the correct rate you can get a shock if it comes back as more than you expected. Duties can be a bit complicated to work out because there are a lot of variables. For example, if you imported woolen jackets, you need to consider which country the wool came from, as some countries (like Israel) have duty-free agreements over wool, which would reduce the duties you had to pay. On the other hand if synthetic fibres were used instead of pure wool, then your duty rates would be higher since there are higher duties applied to synthetic fibres within the USA. To figure out what your duty rate is, find out what the HTS (Harmonized Tax System) code is for your item. To find this, ask your Chinese supplier as they will most likely know. You can then go through the HTS manual and find what the duty rate is for the HTS code of your products. Fifth mistake importers make when importing products from China: being afraid to make mistakes And finally - don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Through making mistakes you learn how to overcome them the next time and make even more money. Mistakes are apart of entrepreneurship. Learn from others - and learn from your own as well!

What You Need to Know About NZ Customs Charges
Visit http://easyfreight.co.nz if you have any other questions. Will what you buy on overseas websites be subject to NZ Customs charges - and if so, how much? Remember that goods purchased overseas by courier, mail order or online may be charged GST and/or import duty. Duty is usually charged on goods that are made here in significant quantities. So clothes, shoes and jewellery may be charged duty, while books, CDs, DVDs and video games won't. You're charged if the total GST and import duty on your purchase is more than $60. As a rule of thumb, if the cost of your goods comes to more than $400 (including postage, freight and insurance) you’re likely to be charged GST. You may also be charged duty depending on the items. You will also be charged an "import entry transaction fee" ($29.26) and a "bio-security system entry levy" ($17.63). These fees are to cover the time and costs of processing imports. New Zealand Customs won't release your parcel until you've paid all these charges. You may need to hire a Customs broker to do the work for you. Visit http://easyfreight.co.nz if you have any other questions.
Methods of Payment in International Trade (HINDI/URDU) - Import/Export International Payment Methods
Methods of Payment in International Trade: In this video, we discussed methods of payment in international trade (Hindi/Urdu) -international payment methods(import-export), mode of payments in Import Export. Subscribe to our channel for more videos. http://www.pakistancustoms.net/2018/01/Methods-of-Payment-in-International-Trade-HINDI-URDU-International-Payment-Methods.html Mode of payments in Exports and Imports: The Major ways of making payment for export of goods are: 1. Advance payment Which is the best method of payment in an export trade? What type of terms of payment can I adopt an Export business? Under any kind of sales, obviously, advance payment is the best option for payment. Ok, now the terms of payments are concerned, you are very happy if you get payment in advance. Right? Yes, the 100% safe business in any business, especially in export business, is nothing but receiving the advance payment. However, in this present competitive world, you do not expect advance payment from the buyer in all cases unless your product attracts some specific reasons to pay you to advance payment by your buyer. 2. Letter of credit.( L.C.) Letter of credit is an assurance given by the buyer’s bank to remit the amount to the seller through seller’s bank on maturity, as per the terms and conditions of the document based on the contractual agreement between buyer and seller. Now in simple words, If LC opened on your name, you will receive amount through the buyer’s bank on the agreed time. There are various types of letters of credits like Revocable, Irrevocable, Confirmed, Unconfirmed, Clean & Documentary, Fixed, Revolving, Transferable, Back to Back etc. Most common and safe LC is Irrevocable Letter of Credit. I will explain in details about all types of LC in other videos. 3. DP basis - Documents against Payments: What is DP term of payment? How does DP term of payment work? DP OR DAP term of payment is one of the terms of payment in international trade. D.A.P or D/P terms of payment means, Documents Against Payment. Once cargo shipped out from supplier’s premises, after completing necessary export legal formalities of exporting country, he hands over goods to the carrier who transport to the final destination of a buyer. After delivery of goods, the exporter is issued Bill of Lading (undersea shipment) or Airway Bill (under air shipment) by Carrier or his agent. Exporter submits all required documents along with Bill of Lading /Airway bill, invoice, packing list, bill of exchange with the bank to send to the buyer through buyer’s bank. The seller’s bank, once after verification sends these shipping documents to the buyer through buyer’s bank. After receipt of such shipping documents by buyer’s bank notifies buyer on receipt of documents and advise to ‘accept’ the documents by effecting payment of export proceeds. Under a DP terms of payment (DAP terms of payment), the buyer collects original shipping documents from his bank after making necessary payment against the sale of goods. 4. D.A terms means Documents against Acceptance Payment terms ‘DA’ means Documents against Acceptance. As per D.A terms, once the shipping documents along with bills of exchange received by the buyer’s bank, the buyer is informed to accept documents from buyer’s bank. The buyer accepts documents by signing bills of exchange sent by the exporter, agreeing to pay the value of goods shipped as per agreed period of time. (say, 30 days from the date of bill of lading, 60 days from the date of bill of lading or 90 days from the date of bill of lading). Importer receives original shipping documents by ‘accepting’ bill of exchange. He completes import customs clearance procedures with the said original shipping documents and approach carrier to deliver cargo to him after completion of such import customs clearance. The payment against the sale of goods is effected upon the maturity day mentioned in the bill of exchange. Documents against Acceptance - Is it safe for the seller? In payment terms, is DA safe for an Exporter? Does importer make payment on maturity of the contracted period? How reliable DA terms in exports? As per my opinion, the legal strength on D.A terms is very weak in international legal terms. Ok, if you have a strong business relationship with your buyer, you can ship goods on ‘credit’ basis. A proper study of the buyer’s creditworthiness is a dare need while shipping under D.A.terms. Buy products from outside India - how much custom duty to pay, taxes, fines and more
Things you should know when shopping from International website (अंतर्राष्ट्रीय वेबसाइट से खरीदारी). When buying from international website you need to get product imported into India, you may or may not need to pay custom duty. This video will give you a better idea what you should do and what you should not do. How to buy handsets and other electronic devices from Chinese online stores, and here is what you should know. Now before you plan to go ahead with the purchase do note that there is a minor risk, it is with reference to the device you order. For example you might face issues with the phone you bought or it does not start at all, in such a case sending the device back / after sales support will not be that easy. But in most cases you will get a perfectly working phone, but yes keep in mind there is this small risk. You should also check the terms and conditions from the site you are buying. There are two ways to order you can either go for the express shipping or ordinary registered post. The express shipping is costlier but in the end the shipping cost + custom duty comes up to the same as normal shipping, though better to use express shipping as it delivers faster. Now avoid using gift / lower invoice value especially for mobile phones. It is better to be honest and if possible ask the seller to attach a screen shot of the product with the actual price. I have used both ordinary post and express shipping and here are my experiences. Ordinary registered Post This is cheaper takes a lot of time and the custom duty is always higher, better to avoid it for high cost products (over Rs. 7000). Express shipping This will cost you extra, its faster and the custom duty is comparatively lower. In general the extra charges i.e. shipping + customs will come to near about the same for both express / ordinary post. Some users / sellers suggest to ship the handset with lower price tag like $30 or under so as to avoid the custom duty for such devices. However it will all depend on your luck if you are lucky you will not have to pay any duty, but if you are not, you will end up paying the actual duty + in some cases extra fine that will be much, much higher will cost you 2x or more the amount you spend on your phone. How much custom duty you need to pay? Well you can check it on dutycalculator.com but do note that every time the duty will be different, depending on the custom official inspecting your device. Just to give you an idea. I have paid Rs. 4,000 for a Rs. 7,000 device (using ordinary post), at times Rs. 900 for a Rs. 8,000 device (using DHL). And recently Rs. 6,200 for 2 smartphones totalling to $320 from China using DHL post. Also better to attach screen shot for device + price from the seller website as proof. And guess what I got the OnePlus One from USA (a long time back) – $349, that time I paid Rs. 3,420 for custom + shipping, Customs Duty was Rs. 1,573. It is safe to assume that for a 160$ handset from China you will end up paying anywhere from Rs. 1000 to Rs. 3000 total custom duty. Where do you pay the custom duty? If you have ordered it from normal post you will need to pay it to the postman. And if you have used express shipping you will have to pay to the courier guy at the time of delivery. Popular Websites Pandawill, aliexpress, gearbest, coolcool, banggood.com, dx etc. Which Shipping service to use for shipping into India For high value products say 50$ and over better use DHL or Fedex. I know these shipping services cost extra, but they are far cheaper than the EMS Speed Post services. If you use EMS shipping in case of custom verification you will have to visit personally or via your agent/authorized person, you will not only be wasting your time but also end up paying much higher amount, it is cheaper to leave the package there. Just avoid EMS at all cost, pathetic services, go with DHL or Fedex they are 1000 times better, cheaper and honest (as long you are honest). Also note for EMS dutiable articles, intended for personal use, imported by post or air are restricted to Rs. 2000, anything above that and you will have to pay duty + fine on full amount, they will also calculate shipping, so avoid EMS, period. Check the image below – it is the reason why most people fall into the trap, they think importing goods from EMS/normal post is free and most free shipping use this option. Instead of putting a board outside the custom office saying “do not pay bribe/ report bribe” it would be better if they put up rules and regulations and educate people regarding the rules of EMS/ import. Indian EMS rule If you get called you will need to pay almost the same cost that you spend. Problem is most people don’t really know how EMS works and it is not a good option for importing goods over 30$ for personal use. It looks cheaper but it is not, and also the primary reason for corruption.

VAT - Importing of Goods in UAE
Normally, the responsibility to levy, collect and pay tax to the government is on the person who is making taxable supplies i.e. on the supplier. This is known as forward charge mechanism. However, In case of imports and on purchase of certain specified goods, the responsibility of paying taxes is on the recipient. This is known as Reverse Charge mechanism. Prices to Import One Pallet (or More) from China to NZ
Ready to pay to your supplier in China? STOP! Talk to a customs broker to avoid hidden fees. 🚨↓↓↓ Click SHOW MORE to read the rest of this story ↓↓↓ 🚨 YOU’LL LEARN: - What are the costs of import from China to New Zealand - Which freight incoterms to choose and why - All fees included in the NZ port fees - Extra fees that you should account for - How to calculate the cost of importing 1+ pallet from China to NZ TABLE OF CONTENTS: 00:37 - #1. Freight 01:09 - Bonus tips #1. The incoterms 01:54 - #2. NZ port fees 03:34 - #3. Extra fees 05:59 - Bonus tips #2. Calculate your fees for 2+ pallets 07:05 - Bonus tips #3. Consider insurance TRANSCRIPTION: Max: Hello. We are talking about costs to import one pallet of goods – or more pallets – from China to New Zealand. My name is Max; this is Alex. #1. FREIGHT We are going to start immediately without any useless information. If you import one pallet – which is roughly 1 cubic meter and 300 kilos of general cargo – from the closest/main port in China – whether it’s Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen – to the main port in New Zealand. I would allow for ocean freight that cost 50 USD for 1 cubic meters. The transit time is going to be roughly 20-30 days from port to port. Alex: Max, what are the terms? BONUS TIPS #1. THE INCOTERMS Max: Good point, Alex. The most and the safest incoterms would be FOB, which is “Freight on Board”. You could also be often offered with CIF, which includes the ocean freight from China to New Zealand. I would absolutely decline this offer because there would be a lot of hidden fees. Alex: Can you name those hidden fees for us? Max: First of all, you don’t know what would be the port charges in New Zealand; you don’t know the company that will invoice you for the fees upon their arrival in New Zealand. Alex: It’s FOB then. Max: It’s 50 USD, which is roughly 70 NZD. #2. NZ PORT FEES Max: Then, the most common fee that all freight forwarders will charge you will be the New Zealand port fee. You should allow 100 NZD for 1 cubic meters. Alex: What are those port fees? Max: When you import one pallet in a full container, there could be ten importers in this container and they all will share this cost. This 100 NZD is a part of the full cost of 1000 NZD or 2000 NZD. Alex: What are you paying for exactly? Max: It’s a port fee to unload the container from the ship and put it on the ground at the port in New Zealand –and it’s roughly the same fee in all major ports in New Zealand. It also covers things like container cartage of the same container from the port to the closest warehouse. Alex: And unpacking of the container? Max: Yes, that includes taking the goods out of the container. Alex: Did you say it was a 100 NZD? Max: 100 NZD for 1 cubic meter only. This process would take at least 2-3 business days to unload the container from the ship, put it on the ground or in the truck, and take the goods out of the container. Alex: The arranging can be longer if your customs clearance takes more time. Max: Yes. If you enjoy this information, make sure you subscribe and ask any questions right now – we will answer every single one. #3. EXTRA FEES Max: Last but not least, all other small fees, which we call extra fees. In New Zealand that could be your import customs brokerage fee, documentation fees, and agency handling fees. I would allow a minimum of 250 NZD. Alex: I couldn’t call them the small fees. They are the biggest part. What do they consist of? Why are they so much higher than anything else? How much is brokerage fee, for example? Max: If it’s a simple commodity – like furniture, up to 5 different products – customs brokerage fees would be 100 NZD. Documentation fee is another 100 NZD. 50 NZD is for the agency handling fee. You have to pay these fees – the customs broker and freight forwarder will have to spend some time talking to the different shipping lines, organize the truck, and explain you, the importer, the process. That’s the time you have to pay for, obviously.
