The indefinite article – a The indefinite article a is the same for all genders. a boya girla cat The indefinite article has no plural form. a boy → boys We use an if the following word starts with a spoken vowel. the following word starts with a spoken consonantthe following word starts with a spoken vowela boya schoola girlan auntan old schoolan American girlMind the pronunciation of the following word. The first sound we speak is [j], so we use a → a unitThe first sound we speak is [ʌ], so we use an → an uncle 2. Use of the indefinite article a/an 2.1. before phrases of time and measurements (per week/weekly) We have English 4 times a week.I go on holiday twice a year. Our car can do 220 kilometres an hour.Tomatoes are $2 a kilo. 2.2. before phrases of jobs My father is a car mechanic. 2.3. with a noun complement He is a good boy. 2.4. before phrases of nationality Bruce Springsteen is an American. 2.5. half/quite We need half a pound of sugar. This is quite a good story. What are English grammar articles? An articleis a word that is used before a noun to show whether the noun refers to something specific or not. A, an and the are articles. Click Here for Step-by-Step Rules, Stories and Exercises to Practice All English Tenses Examples: "I need a chair." In the sentence above we find the article "a". It shows us that the speaker does not need a specific chair. He can have any chair. "I want an apple." In the sentence above we find the article "an." It shows us that the speaker does not want a specific apple. He can have any apple. "I want the red apple." In the sentence above we find the article "the." It shows us that the speaker wants a specificapple. In English, there are two kinds of grammar articles. The Definite Article (For example: the box) "Definite" means "clear, obvious." The definite article tells us that the noun is specific. The speaker talks about a particular (or known) thing.  The definite article in English is "the." Examples: "The car I bought broke down."  "He has a son and a daughter. The daughter is a doctor." "The actors were really good." "I remember the day we first met." "The" can be used before both singular and plural nouns. Examples: "The flower he gave her was very beautiful." "The flowers on the table are nice." The Indefinite Article (For example: a box) "In-" means "not," and "definite" means "clear, obvious." "Indefinite" means "not clear, not exact." The indefinite article tells us that the noun is not specific. The speaker talks about any one of that type of thing.  The indefinite articles in English are "a" and "an." Examples: "I need a pen." (The speaker doesn't tell us which pen he needs. He simply needs a pen, any pen.) "Lisa wants to see a movie." (The speaker doesn't tell us which movie Lisa wants to see. She wants to see some movie.)   "Joe has a car." (The speaker doesn't tell us which car Joe has. He has some car.) "She is a dancer." (She dances for a living.) What is the difference between "a" and "an"? "A" and "an" have the same meaning. We use "a" before a consonant sound. Examples: a dog a building a country a professor a university We use "an" before a vowel sound.  Examples: an apple an umbrella an eye an hour Important! We use "a" and "an" only before a singular noun. We can't use "a" and "an" before a plural noun. Examples: Correct: a car. Incorrect: a cars. Correct: an orange. Incorrect: a oranges. What is the difference between "a" and "the"? "The" is used to talk about specific or known things. These are usually things that have been mentioned before or that the listener is familiar with. "A" (or "an") is used to talk about things which are not specific. These are usually things that haven't been mentioned before or that the listener is unfamiliar with. Let's say I tell you: "I went to see a doctor last week." Explanation: I went to see some doctor. I didn't mention him before, and you are not familiar with him. Another option is that it is not important who he is. So I use the word "a". Then I say: "The doctor said I should get more rest." Now you already know which doctor I am referring to. I am referring to the doctor I went to see. So I use the word "the." Next I say to you: "Do you remember the movie we watched together?" I use the word "the" because I mention a specific movie – you know which movie I am talking about. Then I tell you: "Well, I've seen a better movie since!" You are not familiar with the new movie, so I use the word "a". I also tell you: "A man on the street stepped on my foot." You don't know who exactly stepped on my foot, I've never mentioned him before. So I use the word "a". Finally, I tell you: "I am a singer." This sentence simply means that I sing for a living.

How to use articles 'a', 'an', and 'the' in English? - Basic English Grammar lesson

09:31
How to use articles 'a', 'an', and 'the' in English? - Basic English Grammar lesson English articles ("a", "an", and "the") come before nouns. They help to communicate which thing you're talking about, similar to words like "this", "my", and "all". And they're confusing to a lot of English learners. Articles are really, really hard! If your native language doesn't use articles, they can be really confusing. The truth is, you might never completely master articles. Most non-native English speakers don't, even know if they're quite fluent and have spoken English for a very long time. That's mostly OK. Mistakes with articles don't usually get in the way of communication. Your listeners or readers will usually be able to figure out what you mean by guessing whether you meant "a thing" or "the thing". So while you should try to improve your skill with articles, you shouldn't worry much about them. This video lesson by Niharika will clear your basic doubts for using articles correctly.

Articles (a, an, the) - Lesson 1 - 7 Rules For Using Articles Correctly - English Grammar

16:59
In this lesson, learn the 7 rules for using articles in English correctly. Also see - MOST COMMON MISTAKES IN ENGLISH & HOW TO AVOID THEM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Dax90QyXgI&list=PLmwr9polMHwsR35rD9spEhjFUFa7QblF9 For more FREE English lessons, SUBSCRIBE to this channel. Transcript: Hello and welcome. In this lesson, I will teach you the seven rules that you need to know for using articles in English correctly. Articles are the words ‘a’, ‘an’, and ‘the’. There is a final quiz at the end of the lesson for you to test your understanding. OK, the first rule is about where to use ‘a’ and where to use ‘an’. So rule number one is use ‘a’ before a consonant sound, and ‘an’ before a vowel sound. So in all of these words – you see that they start with a consonant sound. Cat starts with /k/, dog starts with /d/, boy with /b/, girl with /g/, house with /h/ and tree with /t/. So we say ‘a cat’, ‘a dog’, ‘a boy’, ‘a girl’, ‘a house’, ‘a tree’ etc. Notice that in natural speech, we don’t say ‘a’, we say ‘uh’ – like ‘a cat’. In this next set of words, you see that, they all start with a vowel sound – apple starts with /ae/, engineer starts with /e/, ice-cream with /ai/, old with /o/, umbrella with /uh/. So we say ‘an apple’, ‘an engineer’, ‘an ice-cream cone’, ‘an old womman’, ‘an umbrella’ and so on. In speech, we don’t say ‘an’, we say /ən/. Let’s do a small exercise. You see ten items on the screen. For each one, I want you to say if you would use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before it. Stop the video, think about it, then play the video again and check. OK here are the answers. Did you get them all right? I want to focus on items number seven to ten because these are a little tricky. Number seven is ‘a university’ because even though ‘university’ starts with the letter ‘u’ the first sound of the word is not a vowel sound. We don’t say /ooniversity/. We say /yoo-nə- vər-si-ty/ so that first sound is a /y/ sound, which a consonant sound, so we say ‘a university.’ Number eight is similar. The word ‘European’ starts with a /y/ sound, so ‘a European tour.’ In number nine, the spelling has an ‘h’ at the start but that ‘h’ is silent. We don’t say /hau-ər/, we say /au-ər/. The first sound is an /au/ sound which is a vowel sound, so this is ‘an hour’. In the same way, in number ten, we say MA. ‘M’ starts with an /e/ sound which is again a vowel sound, so ‘an MA in English’. OK let’s move on to rule number two: Use ‘a’ and ‘an’ ONLY with singular, countable nouns. We say that a noun is countable if we can count it – one, two, three, four etc. All of these words on the screen are countable. We can say one elephant, three cars, ten teachers, five hundred onions and so on. Now if you talk about one person or thing, like one elephant or one car, then that’s called a singular noun and if you say ten teachers or five hundred onions, those are called plural nouns. Uncountable nouns cannot be counted in this way. Nouns like water, sugar, milk, love, anger, knowledge are some examples. If you think about it, you cannot say “I drank four waters” or “I want eight milks”. To a person, you can say “I love you” but you can’t say “I have five loves for you” – that doesn’t make any sense. So these are all uncountable. Alright, so the rule is - you can only use ‘a’ and ‘an’ if you’re talking about one person or one thing. Let’s do another quick exercise. Here are ten items again. This time, you see ‘a’ or ‘an’ before the nouns, but some of these are wrong. They should NOT have ‘a’ or ‘an’ before them. Stop the video, identify the mistakes, then play the video again and check. OK, here are the answers. Number three is wrong because ‘shirts’ is a plural and you cannot use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before a plural noun. Number five is wrong because ‘happiness’ is uncountable, so again, ‘a’ or ‘an’ cannot be used there. The same goes for number six – water is uncountable. Number nine is wrong because ‘doctors’ is a plural – you can say ‘a doctor’ but not ‘a doctors’. And finally, in number ten, advice is an uncountable noun – so you cannot ask for ‘an advice’. Now a quick note here: the article ‘the’ can be used with all kinds of nouns – singular or plural countable nouns, and uncountable nouns. OK, so let’s now talk about how to choose between ‘a’ or ‘an’ and ‘the’. Here’s rule number three: Use ‘a’ or ‘an’ to talk about a person or thing unknown to your listener. And use ‘the’ to talk about a person or thing known to your listener. For example, “My sister has two computers: a PC and a laptop. The PC is quite old but the laptop is brand new.” I say ‘a PC’ and ‘a laptop’ because that’s the first time I’m mentioning the two computers. That is, until this point, they are unknown to you, the listener.

Present Simple exercise - English grammar exercise

06:11
Present simple exercise. Put your knowledge into practise and find out if you know everything on the present simple or need to watch the lesson again! Video exercise with feedback. Welcome to English grammar spot! It is now time to put your knowledge with present simple exercise one. In this exercise I'm going to give you 15 sentences that look like the following sentence: I ... to play football. So I'm going to give you the infinitive form of the verb and your job is to conjugate that verb into fitting it in the sentence. I am going to give you a time frame, Time's up! I play football. Ready? Let's get started. They ...(to walk) eight miles a day. They walk eight miles a day. Remember when it is a plural we simply use the base form of the verb. It usually ... (to snow) in winter here. It usually snows in winter here. Here it concerns a third person singular ít'so we need to add an -s to the base form of the verb. Water ... (to boil) at a 100 degrees Celsius. Water boils at a 100 degrees Celsius. Again we have a third person singular namely water because we can replace it by the pronoun 'it.' So we need to add an -s, also remember when it is a present simple and it concerns a fact we need to use the present simple. All trains ... (to depart) from platform B. All trains depart from platform B. Here all trains can be replaced by the pronoun 'they' and since it is a plural we simply use the base form of the verb. Those dogs ... (to be) old. Those dogs are old. Remember the verb 'to be' has its own forms so it is hard to conjugate it: I am you are, he is, she is, it is, we are, you are, they are and those dogs can be replaced by they, so we use are. That cat ... (to try) to catch the mouse. That cat tries to catch the mouse. Now remember when it concerns a one syllable verb that ends in a 'y', and is preceded by a consonant and more importantly when it concerns a third person singular and here that cat can be replaced by 'it we change the 'y' into 'ie' and obviously we add an -s. The car ... (to be) fast. The car is fast. Remember 'to be' has its own forms. Now let's continue with questions. You ... (to speak) English? Do you speak English? Remember when forming questions in the present simple we need a helping verb and with the present simple e use the verb 'to do.' ... your brother ... (to speak) Arabic. Does your brother speak Arabic? Now remember your brother is a third person singular so we need to use does, but don't put an -s after speak because the -s has moved on to the verb 'to do' So it is not does your brother speaks. I ... (not to like) pancakes. Also with negations in the present simple we need the verb 'to do' so here the answer is: I don't like pancakes. It ... (not to rain) in July here. It doesn't rain in July here. Remember it's a third person singular and we need a helping verb to do so it becomes does and don't put an -s after rain. ... (you - not to know) me? Don't you know me? Angela often ... (to try) to help me. Angela often tries to help me. Remember third person singular ending in y. The child ... (to catch) the ball for me. The child catches the ball for me. Remember when the verb ends in an -s sound, here catch, and it concerns a third person singular we have to put -es after the base form of the verb. Final question. ... (to do - your sister) your homework? Does your sister do your homework? This must look a little strange because we use the verb 'to do' twice here, but first we use does obviously as a helping verb and the second 'do' is a lexical verb, it adds meaning to the sentence, here the meaning of making. I thank you for your attention and I hope you did well but if you need to know extra information simply go to youtube.com/englishgrammarspot or go to www.englishgrammarspot.com to watch the video on the present simple again or to watch my other videos.

HSC English ( Second Paper):Filling Blanks with Articles-1|এইচ.এস.সি ইংরেজি ২য় পত্র:আর্টিকেল|

13:04
Learning English, BCS Preparation Website: https://bcschemistry.blogspot.com/?m=1 HSC English(Second Paper) question type: Fill in the blanks in the following text with articles( a / and / the )as necessary. some of the blanks may not require an article put a cross(×) in those blanks.
Articles - a, an & the - English Grammar lesson

11:07
Articles - a, an & the - English Grammar lesson Take the quiz - http://www.learnex.in/articles-a-an-the/ The 3 articles in English are a, an and the. The learner has to decide noun-by-noun which one of the articles to use. In fact, there are 4 choices to make, because sometimes no article is necessary. Native-speakers, of course, use the articles correctly without thinking. English learners, on the other hand, need to have some guidelines for making the right choice - particularly those learners whose own language does not have articles. The guidelines that follow in this lesson should help ESL students to a basic understanding of English article use. The words a, an and the are known as articles. • We use an before words that begin with vowels (a,e,i,o,u). E.g. I found an orange boat. However there are few exceptions like the words honest and hour. In the words honest and hour the alphabet h is silent and therefore the letter o becomes the first alphabet of the word and hence we use the article an. E.g. Mr. Smith is an honest man. I will be with you in an hour. We use a before words that begin with consonants (all the letters of the alphabet except the vowels). E.g. Bumble is a baby elephant. • We use the before words that we have already spoken about. E.g. I bought an apple. The apple is very sweet.
