The 4 Most Important Financial Metrics

07:57
Financial metrics are the key numbers that you can focus on in financial statements. There are three financial statements, the balance sheet, the income statement and the cash flow that we like to look at to find important metrics. http://bit.ly/2xOCmRl Were going to look at some of the most important financial metrics that you as investors can use to evaluate a company. The first important number we look at on the balance sheet is liquidity. Can the company you’re looking at really cover everything that they need to cover in the next year? Or have they somehow overloaded themselves with short term debt and obligations that they could really run out of cash in the next year? In order to evaluate this, we want to look at the current ratio. Essentially it is a measure of working capital. It compares the current assets, which are assets that can be turned into cash in the next year, with current liabilities, which are obligations that have to be paid in the next year. What you want to look for when evaluating a company is a 2:1 ratio of liquidity to debt. Some companies are very well run that have a lower ratios than that, because they are controlling their cash very well, or they are in an industry that isn’t growing fast so they don’t need as much liquidity. These companies work their capital down so they don’t need as much cash on hand all the time and they can give that money to their shareholders. You will know that these companies are very well run because, they are really big companies. Most companies, particularly smaller companies need at least a 2:1 ratio between current assets and current liabilities. That’s a great measure of liquidity. We call that the liquidity metric. How to Grow Your Wealth in Times of Economic Crisis: Investing Advice & Personal Finance (2009)

59:07
Personal finance refers to the financial management of which an individual or a family unit is required to make to obtain, budget, save, and spend monetary resources over time, taking into account various financial risks and future life events. Waggoner's book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0470401257/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0470401257&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=bb9be99120033eb875d38cb800fdf547 When planning personal finances the individual would consider the suitability to his or her needs of a range of banking products (checking, savings accounts, credit cards and consumer loans) or investment (stock market, bonds, mutual funds) and insurance (life insurance, health insurance, disability insurance) products or participation and monitoring of individual- or employer-sponsored retirement plans, social security benefits, and income tax management. The key component of personal finance is financial planning, which is a dynamic process that requires regular monitoring and reevaluation. In general, it involves five steps: Assessment: A person's financial situation is assessed by compiling simplified versions of financial statements including balance sheets and income statements. A personal balance sheet lists the values of personal assets (e.g., car, house, clothes, stocks, bank account), along with personal liabilities (e.g., credit card debt, bank loan, mortgage). A personal income statement lists personal income and expenses. Goal setting: Having multiple goals is common, including a mix of short term and long term goals. For example, a long-term goal would be to "retire at age 65 with a personal net worth of $1,000,000," while a short-term goal would be to "save up for a new computer in the next month." Setting financial goals helps to direct financial planning. Goal setting is done with an objective to meet certain financial requirements. Creating a plan: The financial plan details how to accomplish the goals. It could include, for example, reducing unnecessary expenses, increasing the employment income, or investing in the stock market. Execution: Execution of a financial plan often requires discipline and perseverance. Many people obtain assistance from professionals such as accountants, financial planners, investment advisers, and lawyers. Monitoring and reassessment: As time passes, the financial plan must be monitored for possible adjustments or reassessments. Typical goals most adults and young adults have are paying off credit card and/or student loan debt, investing for retirement, investing for college costs for children, paying medical expenses, and planning for passing on their property to their heirs (which is known as estate planning). The six key areas of personal financial planning, as suggested by the Financial Planning Standards Board, are: Financial position: is concerned with understanding the personal resources available by examining net worth and household cash flow. Net worth is a person's balance sheet, calculated by adding up all assets under that person's control, minus all liabilities of the household, at one point in time. Household cash flow totals up all the expected sources of income within a year, minus all expected expenses within the same year. From this analysis, the financial planner can determine to what degree and in what time the personal goals can be accomplished. Adequate protection: the analysis of how to protect a household from unforeseen risks. These risks can be divided into liability, property, death, disability, health and long term care. Some of these risks may be self-insurable, while most will require the purchase of an insurance contract. Determining how much insurance to get, at the most cost effective terms requires knowledge of the market for personal insurance. Business owners, professionals, athletes and entertainers require specialized insurance professionals to adequately protect themselves. Since insurance also enjoys some tax benefits, utilizing insurance investment products may be a critical piece of the overall investment planning. Tax planning: typically the income tax is the single largest expense in a household. Managing taxes is not a question of if you will pay taxes, but when and how much. Government gives many incentives in the form of tax deductions and credits, which can be used to reduce the lifetime tax burden. Most modern governments use a progressive tax. Typically, as one's income grows, a higher marginal rate of tax must be paid. Understanding how to take advantage of the myriad tax breaks when planning one's personal finances can make a significant impact. Investment and accumulation goals: planning how to accumulate enough money for large purchases, and life events is what most people consider to be financial planning. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_finances

Watch This Before Rebalancing Your Investment Portfolio!

44:33
So much is made about this tool of asset management, but how much does the average investor actually know? As a brief overview, rebalancing is getting your investment allocation to the appropriate target. For example, if your portfolio is comprised of 60% in risk assets (i.e. stocks) and 40% in conservative assets (i.e. bonds) and one piece of that moves differently and throws the balance off, rebalancing helps to get you back to your original allocation. In the simplest form, rebalancing buys the assets that have gone below the allocation threshold you would like to be at and sells the assets that have gone over. And you rebalance so that you can maintain the appropriate level of risk in your portfolio and to help stay on track to reach long-term financial goals. But what does the research say about rebalancing? And what is the common sense approach when it comes to this tool? Tune in to this week’s episode to hear us dive into the nuts and bolts of rebalancing and how you can use it in your financial life. What is FINANCIAL ANALYST? What does FINANCIAL ANALYST mean? FINANCIAL ANALYST meaning & explanation

08:16
I MAKE CUTE BABIES - https://amzn.to/2DqiynS What is FINANCIAL ANALYST? What does FINANCIAL ANALYST mean? FINANCIAL ANALYST meaning - FINANCIAL ANALYST definition - FINANCIAL ANALYST explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license A financial analyst, securities analyst, research analyst, equity analyst, investment analyst, or rating analyst is a person who performs financial analysis for external or internal financial clients as a core part of the job. Writing by reports or notes expressing opinions is always a part of "sell-side" (brokerage) analyst job and is often not required for "buy-side" (investment firms) analysts. Traditionally, analysts use fundamental analysis principles but technical chart analysis and tactical evaluation of the market environment are also routine. Often at the end of the assessment of analyzed securities, an analyst would provide a rating recommending an investment action, e.g. to buy, sell, or hold the security. The analysts obtain information by studying public records and filings by the company, as well as by participating in public conference calls where they can ask direct questions to the management. Additional information can be also received in small group or one-on-one meetings with senior members of management teams. However, in many markets such information gathering became difficult and potentially illegal due to legislative changes brought upon by corporate scandals in the early 2000s. One example is Regulation FD (Fair Disclosure) in the United States. Many other developed countries also adopted similar rules. Financial analysts are often employed by mutual and pension funds, hedge funds, securities firms, banks, investment banks, insurance companies, and other businesses, helping these companies or their clients make investment decisions. Financial analysts employed in commercial lending perform "balance sheet analysis," examining the audited financial statements and corollary data in order to assess lending risks. In a stock brokerage house or in an investment bank, they read company financial statements and analyze commodity prices, sales, costs, expenses, and tax rates in order to determine a company's value and project future earnings. In any of these various institutions, the analyst often meets with company officials to gain a better insight into a company's prospects and to determine the company's managerial effectiveness. Usually, financial analysts study an entire industry, assessing current trends in business practices, products, and industry competition. They must keep abreast of new regulations or policies that may affect the industry, as well as monitor the economy to determine its effect on earnings. Financial analysts use spreadsheet and statistical software packages to analyze financial data, spot trends, and develop forecasts; see Financial modeling. On the basis of their results, they write reports and make presentations, usually making recommendations to buy or sell a particular investment or security. Senior analysts may actually make the decision to buy or sell for the company or client if they are the ones responsible for managing the assets. Other analysts use the data to measure the financial risks associated with making a particular investment decision. Financial analysts in investment banking departments of securities or banking firms often work in teams, analyzing the future prospects of companies that want to sell shares to the public for the first time. They also ensure that the forms and written materials necessary for compliance with Securities and Exchange Commission regulations are accurate and complete. They may make presentations to prospective investors about the merits of investing in the new company. Financial analysts also work in mergers and acquisitions departments, preparing analyses on the costs and benefits of a proposed merger or takeover. There are buy-side analysts and sell-side analysts.

Students Share: Corporate Financial Planning & Analysis Professional

02:26
Just days from finishing their Corporate Financial Planning & Analysis Professional course, two students share thoughts on the class and how it will help them. One of them even got a new job due to a connection in the class! https://ccpe.kennesaw.edu/professional/business-management/corporate-financial-planning-analysis/ TRANSCRIPTION: Jennifer Wade: So, I have been in accounting for I guess about 10, 11 years. And have always been more drawn to the budgeting and forecasting and business analysis piece of it. It’s just not something I’ve had an opportunity to be involved in up to this point. So, when I saw that KSU offered this course, it seemed like a perfect opportunity to start dipping my toes into that arena and it’s been probably one of the best decisions I’ve made. Gerrold Kimbrough: I’ve been in the IT Technology field for 25 years now. I really wanted to know how IT and financial planning plays together. I saw the class advertised I thought it was a really good time to do that, I’m the process of writing articles and writing books and I just jumped on the opportunity. I really like that. Jennifer Wade: Through connections I’ve made here, I was speaking with someone who was actually in a FP&A role and has been in that role for his entire career. So, I actually reached out to him and just over the course of conversations we had it turned out where he had an opportunity come open with his current employer, that I was a good fit for. So, I’m actually going to get a new job that will incorporate what I already know along with what I’ve learned here at KSU. Gerrold Kimbrough: It’s really good to me for a IT Professional to understand how information technology is used in the business context so whether it be helping financial managers do budgeting or accounting or forecasting its really important to leverage technology going forward. I would, I recommend it strongly. The person that teaches it she is very strong, very knowledgeable. The class was very hands-on, it’s very real world. So, I think it really is a good class if you’re new to financial planning and analysis, it’s a good introduction. You know if you’ve been in financial planning and analysis for a while I think it’s really good remedial learning, helps you to get the certification and take the next step in terms of your professional growth.
