It's the foundational college class we all should have taken, but was never offered—until now. Your hosts are two Ph.D.-level dieticians and registered nutritionists, Douglas Kalman and Susan Hewlings. They've both worked with a wide range of athletes, but are also athletes themselves, so they know the questions we've all asked repeatedly. They'll speak to the fundamental concepts of nutrition across nine videos, each diving deep into a specific topic. The videos are all 5-15 minutes in length, so you can watch them in a row, or space them out like you're taking a college course. They can be watched individually, but we recommend watching them in sequence for maximum benefit. Each video's individual page contains a comprehensive list of notes and important takeaways, but to help you retain crucial ideas, we have also included a workbook to go along with the course. To utilize it, print it off and follow along, or quiz yourself after watching a video. It also includes a "notes" section you can use to jot down the most important ideas for your particular situation. ============================================= | Follow Us | ► Twitch: http://bit.ly/2q1dttE ► YouTube: http://bit.ly/1RSJFa4 ► Facebook: http://on.fb.me/1lomhpr ► Instagram: http://bit.ly/1LzBxab ► Twitter: http://bit.ly/1RSJQlL ► Google+: http://bit.ly/1NRe8qu ► Pinterest: http://bit.ly/1OOZgY4 ► Spotify: http://spoti.fi/1NRebm0 We are Bodybuilding.com. Epidemics in Western Society Since 1600 (HIST 234) The form of medicine that arose in fifth-century Greece, associated with the name of Hippocrates and later popularized by Galen, marked a major innovation in the treatment of disease. Unlike supernatural theories of disease, Hippocrates' method involved seeking the causes of illness in natural factors. This method rested upon an analogy between the order of the universe and the composition of the body's "humors." Health, on this view, was a matter of achieving equilibrium between competing humoral forces. Although Hippocratic theory would later be challenged for a number of different reasons, notably including the experience of epidemic diseases, it persists today in various traditions of holistic medicine. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Epidemics in Western Society Since 1600 (HIST 234) The sub-discipline of tropical medicine furnishes a clear example of the socially constructed character of medical knowledge. Tropical diseases first enter medical discourse as a unique conceptual field and topic for specialization at the end of the 19th century, and the heyday of tropical medicine - from the 1890s to the First World War - corresponds to the golden age of Western colonialism in Africa and Asia. This correspondence was not accidental; tropical medicine both gave practical aid to colonial powers faced with unfamiliar disease environments and furnished a deeply Eurocentric view of disease well-suited to the ideology of colonial expansion. As a consequence of this approach, little attention was given to the social factors of disease (work conditions, poverty, malnutrition), and the health of native populations was largely ignored. Subsequent periods of research in tropical medicine have, with decolonization and infusions of money from American foundations, been obliged to confront the consequences stemming from the discipline's formation as an instrument of colonial subjugation. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Tropical Medicine 05:48 - Chapter 2. Background: Diseases of the Tropics 11:53 - Chapter 3. Transition to Tropical Diseases and Tropical Medicine: Medical Factors 31:09 - Chapter 4. Institutional Factors 34:15 - Chapter 5. The west has long acknowledged the Islamic world's contribution to the field of medicine but very few people recognise the sources and foundations which led to such great advances and findings. These foundations are in fact the guidelines set by Allah and His Messenger sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, which are preserved in the Noble Qur'an and the authentic Sunnah. We are living in a time where health problems have reached epidemic proportions and people are suffering great spiritual and physical diseases. Such problems cannot however, be brought to an end by adopting the many hundreds of new gimics and treatment plans, but will require Divine aid: Prophetic Medicine. _________________ Part 1 - Diseases of the Heart and its Cures - Sincerity (Ikhlaas) - Dr Hamad at Tuwaijeree - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5cv2Rw1ve8 Part 2 - Diseases of the Heart and its Cures - Qari Dr Nasser ibn Abdu Rahman al Hammad - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cgLFCv2sLk Part 3 - Diseases of the Heart and its Cures + Q & A Session - Qari Abu Bakr Shatri http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmLRgaGowY4 Part 4 of 'Diseases of the Heart and its Cures' - Prophetic Medicines -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLOPVP9vvyU _______________ ABOUT THE SPEAKER - Dr Jamil al-Qudsi is a medical Doctor and a world renowned Prophetic Medicine specialist. What can history teach us about how to improve the present treatment of disease? We tend to think of older perspectives on medicine as inherently flawed, yet embedded in previous clinical experience and practice are unexpected insights that can help us improve the efficiency and effectiveness of current medical interventions. Using key examples drawn from three of our biggest killers: heart disease, diabetes, and tuberculosis, Mauck illustrates how we can apply lessons from the history of medicine to lower healthcare costs and improve health outcomes for those afflicted with these diseases. Aaron Pascal Mauck is a Historian of Science specializing in medicine and public health. His research explores the foundations of chronic disease research and treatment in the twentieth century, with a particular focus on the histories of diabetes and heart disease in a global health context. He is particularly interested in developing techniques for integrating historical research into contemporary disease control efforts, through team-based research strategies and new computational methods. From 2010-2012, Aaron was a Robert Wood Johnson Health and Society Scholar at the University of Michigan. He has been teaching in the History of Science Department at Harvard University since 2012. I know that this won't catch on like the ice bucket challenge because it's 13 minutes long (not 30 seconds long), I'm not in my bathing suit (maybe that's a good thing), and I'm giving people information (learning during the summer?!?!?!), but here's my more environmentally-sound version of the ALS ice bucket challenge. Loosey-goosey guidelines: 1) Choose a minimum of two charities, foundations, or disease processes that you feel strongly about 2) Select either the mission statement (if it is something like an animal protection organization) or information about the disease that the foundation researches 3) This is a trivia format - present the information without giving away the name of the foundation or the disease process for all of the options 4) Select your "nominees" 5) Encourage them not to cheat by googling the diseases or charities! see how much they know! 6) Have your nominees answer in the video comments (i.e., "disease #1 is ALS, disease #2 is cerebral palsy") 7) If your nominees get the answers right, then they get to make a video just like you did, and select their own nominees 8) If your nominees get the answers wrong, then they donate a minimum of $5 to one of the charities that you posted *It's important that you provide the donation information for your nominees. However, encourage them to research other related foundations If they do not want to donate to that particular charity, or if they want to donate to a local foundation :) 2014 appears to be the summer of giving. Let's keep it going! *The ALS Association: https://secure2.convio.net/alsa/site/Donation2?df_id=27420&27420.donation=form1 *National MS Society: https://secure3.convio.net/nmss/site/Donation2;jsessionid=6B543E3E8EA0B7D75E02EDD09DA1489D.app306a?df_id=46724&46724.donation=form1 *Cystic Fibrosis Foundation: https://www.cff.org/GetInvolved/ManyWaysToGive/Donate/index.cfm

(June 26, 2006) Warren #Buffett, billionaire investor and founder of Berkshire Hathaway, has announced he is donating much of his fortune to charity. Over time, most of Buffett's $44 billion in stock holdings will be given to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In the form of Berkshire Hathaway shares, Buffett signed papers that give $31 billion of his fortune to fund the Gates Foundation's work in fighting infectious diseases and reforming education. Besides the major gift to the Gates Foundation, Buffett is dividing $6 billion among four other charities started by his family members. Those foundations support environmental causes, abortion rights, helping low-income children and human rights. At a lively, jocular event at the New York Public Library, Buffett signed the letters that pledge $37 billion in stock to five different foundations, and he reassured the crowd that he had checked the names of the beneficiaries. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe NOW to Warren Buffett: https://bit.ly/2BaQUtW Learn more from The Warren Buffett Way: Visit us: https://buffettonline.com/ Like us: https://www.facebook.com/buffettonline Follow on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/buffett.online/ Follow on Twitter: https://twitter.com/buffettonline #BuffettOnline

Introduction to Psychology (PSYC 110) This lecture introduces students to two broad theories of how the mind relates to the body. Dualism is the ubiquitous and intuitive feeling that our conscious mind is separate from our physical bodies, whereas Materialism is the idea that all of our mental states are caused by physical states of the brain. This lecture reviews arguments explaining why materialism has become the predominant theory of mind in psychology. This discussion is followed by a basic overview of the neurophysiology of the brain. 00:00 - Chapter 1. The Brain, the Mind and Dualism 12:06 - Chapter 2. Movement of our voluntary muscles is controlled by our central nervous system. This animation describes the process of infection with Clostridium tetani and how the toxin it releases interrupts nervous control of our muscles, leading to tetanus. This loss of muscle control causes the convulsive muscle spasms typical of tetanus, which are so severe they can cause bone fractures and dislocations. Death often occurs due to respiratory failure or cardiac arrest. With adequate immunisation, tetanus is a completely preventable disease. However in developing nations, without comprehensive vaccination programmes, tetanus remains one of the top ten causes of death. Universal vaccination, including pregnant women, is vital to preventing this terrible affliction. Design and animation by Dr. Maja Divjak Thank you to Dr David Donovan, co-founder of New Foundations Medical Mission for footage of the baby with tetanus. Can you actually make a disease disappear? Dr Rangan Chatterjee thinks you can. Often referred to as the doctor of the future, Rangan is changing the way that we look at illness and how medicine will be practised in years to come. He highlighted his methods in the groundbreaking BBC TV show, Doctor In The House, gaining him much acclaim from patients, his contemporaries and the media. He is the author of the international bestseller, The 4 Pillar Plan - http://amzn.to/2yGfpuB which has been released in the USA and Canada under the title, How to Make Disease Disappear - https://amzn.to/2GstJf6 Rangan’s 15 years of clinical experience in the NHS includes internal medicine, immunology and general practice. A pioneer in the emerging field of progressive medicine, he also uses techniques from other disciplines he has studied including movement kinetics and functional medicine. His own journey of learning was accelerated when family members fell ill and now Rangan is helping people to take control of their health by addressing the root causes of their illnesses, something which is often not achieved in 21st century health care, evidenced by a steady increase in the rates of chronic disease. Rangan is a super-generalist, looking at as many factors as possible which can create wellness or illness. His talk is testament to how our thinking around the concept of disease needs to change to help form a map for future healthcare. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

Even though you probably don't choose to spend a lot of time thinking about it, your pee is kind of a big deal. Today we're talking about the anatomy of your urinary system, and how your kidneys filter metabolic waste and balance salt and water concentrations in the blood. We'll cover how nephrons use glomerular filtration, tubular reabsorption, and tubular secretion to reabsorb water and nutrients back into the blood, and make urine with the leftovers. Check out our new website for more incredible history documentaries: HD and ad-free. http://bit.ly/2O6zUsK The Black Death was an unprecedented human disaster of appalling magnitude. In three dreadful years over one third of Europe's population was wiped out. Everyone believed it heralded the end of the world. To the chroniclers of Padua the plague was devastation deemed more final than Noah's flood. The plague shook the wealthy, relatively well-populated, confident society of mid-14th-century Western Europe to its foundations. This film follows the spread of the plague and its implications for the Europe of the Middle Ages. Looking at issues such as medicine, religion, superstition and society, and employing expert analysis from top historians, this is a fascinating look at one of the most chilling and terrible periods in all of human existence. Most of all, this is history told through contemporary voices of some of the key chroniclers of the time. Real people who contracted the disease and died from it, but who left amazing, vivid accounts of what it feels like to live in a world that is falling apart. Body fluids or discharges (e.g., blood, vomit, feces, urine) pose a potential health hazard, as they may contain microorganisms that cause disease in humans – these diseases include, but are not limited to, Hepatitis A and B virus (HAV and HBV), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Norovirus. The microorganisms that cause these diseases are resistant to routine cleaning and sanitation. To avoid dangerous cross-contamination to food, it is critical that body fluids are cleaned and disinfected correctly and that all materials used to clean up body fluids are disposed of safely.
