Building a foundation for science and research to improve our world: Ruchi Shah at TEDxSBU

10:17
From a young age, Ruchi has been passionate about translating science into tangible change that will improve the lives of others. Inspired by a trip to India at the age of 15 and the devastating impact of mosquito transmitted diseases, Ruchi Shah created a novel all-natural mosquito repellent while in high school that is effective and inexpensive, rendering it accessible to a global population. In this TEDx talk, Ruchi passionately shares her story, including the challenges of being a young scientist and the triumphs she experienced through the power of mentorship. Elaborating on the perception of science by the general public, Ruchi proposes solutions to break the stereotypes of scientists. Ruchi Shah is a sophomore at Stony Brook University in the Scholars for Medicine (B.S./M.D.) and Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) program, majoring in biology and minoring in journalism. Ruchi's work, ranging from creating an all-natural mosquito repellent to improving cervical cancer diagnosis, was recognized by the National Young Inventor's Hall of Fame, the AXA Achievement scholarship, the Simons Fellowship, and Intel ISEF. She was featured in Forbes and USA Today, and was invited as a spotlight speaker and the youngest participant at the inaugural Forbes Women's Summit in May 2013. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

2. Foundations: This Is Your Brain

53:19
Introduction to Psychology (PSYC 110) This lecture introduces students to two broad theories of how the mind relates to the body. Dualism is the ubiquitous and intuitive feeling that our conscious mind is separate from our physical bodies, whereas Materialism is the idea that all of our mental states are caused by physical states of the brain. This lecture reviews arguments explaining why materialism has become the predominant theory of mind in psychology. This discussion is followed by a basic overview of the neurophysiology of the brain. 00:00 - Chapter 1. The Brain, the Mind and Dualism 12:06 - Chapter 2. Why Does Warren Buffett Give to Charity? Gates Foundation Fights Diseases and Reforms Education.

43:44
(June 26, 2006) Warren #Buffett, billionaire investor and founder of Berkshire Hathaway, has announced he is donating much of his fortune to charity. Over time, most of Buffett's $44 billion in stock holdings will be given to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In the form of Berkshire Hathaway shares, Buffett signed papers that give $31 billion of his fortune to fund the Gates Foundation's work in fighting infectious diseases and reforming education. Besides the major gift to the Gates Foundation, Buffett is dividing $6 billion among four other charities started by his family members. Those foundations support environmental causes, abortion rights, helping low-income children and human rights. At a lively, jocular event at the New York Public Library, Buffett signed the letters that pledge $37 billion in stock to five different foundations, and he reassured the crowd that he had checked the names of the beneficiaries. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe NOW to Warren Buffett: https://bit.ly/2BaQUtW Learn more from The Warren Buffett Way: Visit us: https://buffettonline.com/ Like us: https://www.facebook.com/buffettonline Follow on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/buffett.online/ Follow on Twitter: https://twitter.com/buffettonline #BuffettOnline

Cleaning Up Body Fluids - eTrain Foundations

05:36
Body fluids or discharges (e.g., blood, vomit, feces, urine) pose a potential health hazard, as they may contain microorganisms that cause disease in humans – these diseases include, but are not limited to, Hepatitis A and B virus (HAV and HBV), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Norovirus. The microorganisms that cause these diseases are resistant to routine cleaning and sanitation. To avoid dangerous cross-contamination to food, it is critical that body fluids are cleaned and disinfected correctly and that all materials used to clean up body fluids are disposed of safely.

2. Classical Views of Disease: Hippocrates, Galen, and Humoralism

48:12
Epidemics in Western Society Since 1600 (HIST 234) The form of medicine that arose in fifth-century Greece, associated with the name of Hippocrates and later popularized by Galen, marked a major innovation in the treatment of disease. Unlike supernatural theories of disease, Hippocrates' method involved seeking the causes of illness in natural factors. This method rested upon an analogy between the order of the universe and the composition of the body's "humors." Health, on this view, was a matter of achieving equilibrium between competing humoral forces. Although Hippocratic theory would later be challenged for a number of different reasons, notably including the experience of epidemic diseases, it persists today in various traditions of holistic medicine. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Diseases as Supernatural 13:50 - Chapter 2. Humoralism 30:14 - Chapter 3. Galen as Interpreter of Hippocratic Medicine 42:32 - Chapter 4. My alternative to the #ALSIceBucketChallenge

13:12
I know that this won't catch on like the ice bucket challenge because it's 13 minutes long (not 30 seconds long), I'm not in my bathing suit (maybe that's a good thing), and I'm giving people information (learning during the summer?!?!?!), but here's my more environmentally-sound version of the ALS ice bucket challenge. Loosey-goosey guidelines: 1) Choose a minimum of two charities, foundations, or disease processes that you feel strongly about 2) Select either the mission statement (if it is something like an animal protection organization) or information about the disease that the foundation researches 3) This is a trivia format - present the information without giving away the name of the foundation or the disease process for all of the options 4) Select your "nominees" 5) Encourage them not to cheat by googling the diseases or charities! see how much they know! 6) Have your nominees answer in the video comments (i.e., "disease #1 is ALS, disease #2 is cerebral palsy") 7) If your nominees get the answers right, then they get to make a video just like you did, and select their own nominees 8) If your nominees get the answers wrong, then they donate a minimum of $5 to one of the charities that you posted *It's important that you provide the donation information for your nominees. However, encourage them to research other related foundations If they do not want to donate to that particular charity, or if they want to donate to a local foundation :) 2014 appears to be the summer of giving. Let's keep it going! *The ALS Association: https://secure2.convio.net/alsa/site/Donation2?df_id=27420&27420.donation=form1 *National MS Society: https://secure3.convio.net/nmss/site/Donation2;jsessionid=6B543E3E8EA0B7D75E02EDD09DA1489D.app306a?df_id=46724&46724.donation=form1 *Cystic Fibrosis Foundation: https://www.cff.org/GetInvolved/ManyWaysToGive/Donate/index.cfm

Rejuvenating the Mitochondria

45:38
A Google TechTalk, 12/09/16, presented by Matthew O'Connor ABSTRACT: "Engineering Approaches to Combating the Diseases and Disabilities of Aging: Rejuvenating the Mitochondria." This is a talk for a general audience on the work of the SENS Research Foundation to fight age related diseases with a focus on repairing the damage that accumulates as we age. The SENS Research Foundation recently published a paper on their research into repairing cells that lack two of the thirteen essential mitochondrial proteins. The SRF scientists were able to reengineer the two mitochondrial genes and move them to the nucleus of the cell, restoring the missing proteins. This work is significant for both its impact on treating age related diseases but also on childhood diseases resulting from a lack of certain mitochondrial proteins. About the speaker: Matthew was awarded his Master's degree at Northwestern Medical in 1999 for his work studying behavioral neuroscience in aged rodents. In 2005, at Baylor College of Medicine he received a PhD in Biochemistry for his work on proteins that regulate human telomeres. Postdoctoral research includes work at UC Berkeley on muscle stem cells and aging. Since 2010, Dr. O'Connor has headed up the MitoSENS project at the research center in Mountain View, California. His research is focused on "allotopic expression" of mitochondrial genes where his team is engineering mitochondrial genes to be expressed from the nucleus and targeted to the mitochondia. Since 2012 Dr. O'Connor has had broad oversight over many areas of research at SRF. Matthew O'Connor is passionate about performing basic research to combat the diseases and disabilities of aging.

Cognitive Foundations for Clinical Decision Making

01:27
In this SHARPC project, we are primarily concerned with the development of a cognitive support system that can assist physicians in their decision-making tasks. Specifically, we are interested in - Capturing, understanding and analyzing the nature and structure of expert clinician knowledge concerning commonly occurring diseases using human-intensive and semi-automated methods - Developing service-oriented architecture for flexible medical data retrieval, intelligent knowledge organization and presentation for efficient clinical decision-making Related to this, we are also investigating clinical information seeking practices and alternative mechanisms for intelligent information presentation in clinical contexts. For more information, please go to http://www.uthouston.edu/nccd/projects/sharpc/index.htm

15. Tropical Medicine as a Discipline

46:08
Epidemics in Western Society Since 1600 (HIST 234) The sub-discipline of tropical medicine furnishes a clear example of the socially constructed character of medical knowledge. Tropical diseases first enter medical discourse as a unique conceptual field and topic for specialization at the end of the 19th century, and the heyday of tropical medicine - from the 1890s to the First World War - corresponds to the golden age of Western colonialism in Africa and Asia. This correspondence was not accidental; tropical medicine both gave practical aid to colonial powers faced with unfamiliar disease environments and furnished a deeply Eurocentric view of disease well-suited to the ideology of colonial expansion. As a consequence of this approach, little attention was given to the social factors of disease (work conditions, poverty, malnutrition), and the health of native populations was largely ignored. Subsequent periods of research in tropical medicine have, with decolonization and infusions of money from American foundations, been obliged to confront the consequences stemming from the discipline's formation as an instrument of colonial subjugation. 00:00 - Chapter 1. The Black Death (The Plague Documentary) | Timeline

48:22
Check out our new website for more incredible history documentaries: HD and ad-free. http://bit.ly/2O6zUsK The Black Death was an unprecedented human disaster of appalling magnitude. In three dreadful years over one third of Europe's population was wiped out. Everyone believed it heralded the end of the world. To the chroniclers of Padua the plague was devastation deemed more final than Noah's flood. The plague shook the wealthy, relatively well-populated, confident society of mid-14th-century Western Europe to its foundations. This film follows the spread of the plague and its implications for the Europe of the Middle Ages. Looking at issues such as medicine, religion, superstition and society, and employing expert analysis from top historians, this is a fascinating look at one of the most chilling and terrible periods in all of human existence. Most of all, this is history told through contemporary voices of some of the key chroniclers of the time. Real people who contracted the disease and died from it, but who left amazing, vivid accounts of what it feels like to live in a world that is falling apart.
