2. Foundations: This Is Your Brain

53:19
Introduction to Psychology (PSYC 110) This lecture introduces students to two broad theories of how the mind relates to the body. Dualism is the ubiquitous and intuitive feeling that our conscious mind is separate from our physical bodies, whereas Materialism is the idea that all of our mental states are caused by physical states of the brain. This lecture reviews arguments explaining why materialism has become the predominant theory of mind in psychology. This discussion is followed by a basic overview of the neurophysiology of the brain. 00:00 - Chapter 1. The Brain, the Mind and Dualism 12:06 - Chapter 2. 2. Classical Views of Disease: Hippocrates, Galen, and Humoralism

48:12
Epidemics in Western Society Since 1600 (HIST 234) The form of medicine that arose in fifth-century Greece, associated with the name of Hippocrates and later popularized by Galen, marked a major innovation in the treatment of disease. Unlike supernatural theories of disease, Hippocrates' method involved seeking the causes of illness in natural factors. This method rested upon an analogy between the order of the universe and the composition of the body's "humors." Health, on this view, was a matter of achieving equilibrium between competing humoral forces. Although Hippocratic theory would later be challenged for a number of different reasons, notably including the experience of epidemic diseases, it persists today in various traditions of holistic medicine. 00:00 - Chapter 1. Diseases as Supernatural 13:50 - Chapter 2. Humoralism 30:14 - Chapter 3. Galen as Interpreter of Hippocratic Medicine 42:32 - Chapter 4. Ascelpius Complete course materials are available at the Open Yale Courses website: http://open.yale.edu/courses This course was recorded in Spring 2010.

Cleaning Up Body Fluids - eTrain Foundations

05:36
Body fluids or discharges (e.g., blood, vomit, feces, urine) pose a potential health hazard, as they may contain microorganisms that cause disease in humans – these diseases include, but are not limited to, Hepatitis A and B virus (HAV and HBV), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Norovirus. The microorganisms that cause these diseases are resistant to routine cleaning and sanitation. To avoid dangerous cross-contamination to food, it is critical that body fluids are cleaned and disinfected correctly and that all materials used to clean up body fluids are disposed of safely.

Part I: Foundations of Insulin Resistance

58:04
Part 1/3. Meridian Valley Lab’s Kraft Prediabetes Profile is a timed test that measures the patient’s insulin response to a measured glucose challenge and return to baseline over a 4-hour period. This test looks at patterns of insulin response rather than a strict cut-off point for glucose. These patterns delineate the severity of insulin resistance, as a patient progresses from normal insulin sensitivity to postprandial hyperinsulinemia to the insulinopenic state found in beta-cell exhaustion. This spectrum of insulin response allows the clinician to identify insulin resistance early in its development. (This holds true even when fasting and 2 hour post-challenge glucose levels are normal and fasting insulin is below 10μIU/mL.) The resulting evaluation of insulin resistance severity can be used to monitor efficacy of treatment. The Kraft Prediabetes Profile measures patterns of insulin activity after drinking a glucose challenge. Dr. Kraft identified five patterns of insulin response that begins with normal sensitivity and progresses to severe insulin resistance and then finally to an insulinopenic state. Picture4The five patterns of insulin response correspond with the timing of the insulin peak after the glucose challenge. Normally, insulin peaks quickly after a meal (or glucose challenge in this case) and then drops precipitously back to baseline (Pattern I). As insulin resistance becomes more severe, the insulin response to glucose peaks later and later (Patterns II-IIIB). In Pattern IV, insulin is high in the fasting state and rises even further in attempt to keep blood sugar under control. Islet cell exhaustion is illustrated by Pattern V, or insulinopenia, in which the patient’s pancreas is no longer able to produce an adequate amount of insulin.

Life with Pulmonary Fibrosis | The PFF Patient Registry

05:42
The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation is excited to announce that we have achieved our enrollment goal for the Patient Registry with participation of 2,001 patients. The Registry, launched in 2016, is a collection of comprehensive anonymized data from patients living with pulmonary fibrosis (PF). Registry data will help inform best practices in care and identify potential treatment targets. The Registry will also speed the path to clinical trials by creating a pool of patients who are interested in participating. The Registry includes information about the patient’s age and gender, details on how the diagnosis was made, test results, medications and medical outcomes. It also includes high resolution CT scans and a biorepository of patient blood samples. Over time and with additional funding, the PFF aims to enroll additional patients and expand the sources of data gathered for the Registry. The PFF plans to use Registry data to continually reassess and improve evidence-based clinical guidelines. In addition to Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, the first phase of the PFF Patient Registry was funded through the support of corporations, foundations, and individuals who have been impacted by PF. Each of these donors shares in the belief that a comprehensive registry is fundamentally important to improving the lives of those living with the disease. The Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (PFF) offers essential programs and resources for people with pulmonary fibrosis. The mission of the PFF is to mobilize people and resources to provide access to high quality care and to lead research for a cure so that people with PF will lead longer, healthier lives. Faces of Healthwell

03:17
The HealthWell Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization established in 2003 that is committed to addressing the needs of individuals with insurance who cannot afford their copayments, coinsurance, and premiums for important medical treatments. Our vision is to ensure that no patient goes without health care because they cannot afford it. As patients are required to pay a larger share of health care costs each year, even many individuals with insurance find health care unaffordable. These patients face challenges affording the treatments they need to fight chronic and life-altering medical conditions. The HealthWell Foundation was established to address and alleviate this problem. Our mission is to reduce barriers to care for underinsured patients with chronic or life-altering diseases.

In addition, I will give you 3 isolation precaution mnemonics on how to remember droplet, contact, and airborne precautions. Standard precautions are precautions we follow with every patient at all times because we do not know if the person has an infectious disease or not. This is to protect ourselves and other patients. Standard precautions include: hand hygiene, wearing appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment), injection safety, respiratory/cough etiquette, patient room placement, handling of patient laundry and equipment. Isolation precautions are precautions we follow when we know or suspect a patient has an infectious disease. Depending on the type of infectious disease the patient has we will place the patient in the appropriate precautions. For example, if a patient has Pertussis (whooping cough) we will place the patient in droplet precautions. As the nurse, we would continue to follow standard precautions along with always wearing a surgical mask during patient contact. For a patient in airborne precautions, we would wear an N95 mask along with following standard precautions and place the patient in a special AIIR room (which is a negative pressure room). For a patient in contact precautions, we would always wear gloves and a gown during patient contact and follow standard precautions. Please watch the video for details on what diseases are included with each precaution and the mnemonics to help you remember the material.
