MLTalks: Bitcoin Developers Gavin Andresen, Cory Fields, and Wladimir van der Laan
In the span of just a few short years, Bitcoin has grown from a peripheral open-source project into a major catalyst for the development of decentralized, trustless digital payments and contracts. In the spirit of the Internet's wide reach, this technology has the potential to positively impact billions of people and become a crucial part of daily life. In spite of Bitcoin’s rapid growth, the path to widespread adoption remains challenging, and many tough decisions will need to be made in order to ensure the technology’s long-term success. At the core of this decision-making process is a small group of developers who are the stewards of Bitcoin’s core software—security software that helps protect assets worth billions of dollars, as well as the delicate trust in Bitcoin’s decentralized infrastructure. Join us for a conversation with three of these core developers—Gavin Andresen, Cory Fields, and Wladimir van der Laan—to discuss ongoing debates about Bitcoin’s development and future success. Biography: Gavin Andresen was the lead maintainer of the Bitcoin open source software project after its creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, disappeared. He is currently a software developer at the MIT Digital Currency Initiative, and still serves as the Chief Scientist of the Bitcoin Foundation. He began his career working on 3D graphics software at Silicon Graphics Computer Systems, and has founded or worked at several startups. Cory Fields is a Bitcoin Core developer who works to maintain and improve development and deployment workflows. His work typically revolves around build procedures and long-term code-base maintainability. For the Bitcoin Core project, he focuses on the build-system, continuous integration, automated regression testing, modularization, and the deterministic release process. Wladimir van der Laan is a developer at the MIT Digital Currency Initiative and lead maintainer for the Bitcoin Core project. This involves reviewing code, troubleshooting bugs, software testing, communicating with open source contributors, as well as coordinating the release process. He has a background in computer science and embedded software development. Who is Bitcoin's Satoshi Nakamoto? | LIVE from the NYPL
Bitcoin: Gavin Andresen | Nathaniel Popper | Andrew Ross Sorkin | Fred Wilson Recorded on May 19th, 2015 at the New York Public Library For more events by LIVE from the NYPL visit: http://www.nypl.org/events/live-nypl Watch the full 90min event here: http://goo.gl/Md1IiG Bitcoin is one of the most talked about but least understood technological innovations of recent years, continuing to draw new backers on Wall Street and Silicon Valley. New York Times reporter Nathaniel Popper's book, Digital Gold, illuminates this confounding technology through the first ever narrative recounting of Bitcoin's dramatic rise to prominence, which benefited from access to all the major players. He will be joined on stage by the programmer who has been leading the Bitcoin project since 2010, Gavin Andresen, and one of the biggest venture capitalists to back the technology, Fred Wilson of Union Square Ventures. The conversation will be instigated by New York Times columnist and CNBC anchor Andrew Ross Sorkin. GAVIN ANDRESEN is the Chief Scientist at the Bitcoin Foundation and is one of the longest serving and most widely respected developers of the Bitcoin protocol. Prior to this, he wrote 3D graphics software in Silicon Valley. NATHANIEL POPPER is a reporter at The New York Times, where he has covered the intersections between Wall Street and Silicon Valley. Before joining the Times, he worked at the Los Angeles Times and the Forward. Popper grew up in Pittsburgh and graduated from Harvard College. He lives in Brooklyn with his family. ANDREW ROSS SORKIN is a financial columnist for The New York Times , a co-anchor of CNBC's "Squawk Box," and the editor-at-large of DealBook, a news site he founded that is published by The Times. Sorkin is the author of the best-selling book,Too Big to Fail: The Inside Story of How Wall Street and Washington Fought to Save the Financial System—and Themselves. Sorkin co-produced an HBO adaptation of the book, which was nominated for 11 Emmy Awards. He has won numerous journalistic honors including two Gerald Loeb award and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Sorkin began writing for The New York Times in 1995 under unusual circumstances: he hadn't yet graduated from high school. FRED WILSON has been a venture capitalist since 1987. He currently is a managing partner at Union Square Ventures and also founded Flatiron Partners. Fred has a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from MIT and an MBA from The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Fred is married with three kids and lives in New York City.
BTC News - Gavin Andresen Drops A New Concept On Github for Bitcoin Cash
Gavin Andresen Drops A New Concept On Github for Bitcoin CashOn January 2 one of the most well-known developers for the original bitcoin protocol, Gavin Andresen, contributed an idea to Github called “Storing the UTXO as a bit-vector.” Andresen has been active on Github for the past month as his contributions have been focused on general (Unspent Transaction Output) UTXO sets, but this particular idea is for the Bitcoin Cash (BCH) network. Also read:  The Developer Who Was Given the BTC Codebase Permissions from Satoshi Offers an Idea for BCH Network   Gavin Andresen has beenGithub for the past twenty-seven days, and on the second day of the new year, the developer contributed an idea for the BCH network. TheAndresen called “Half-baked thoughts exploring a different way of implementing a fully-validating BCH node,” is an idea on shifting the storage of full transaction data to wallets. The developer explains the concept is to let every node in the new network store a bit-vector for every block which can be highly compressible even for gigabyte-sized blocks. “This isn’t a problem today (the UTXO set easily fits in the RAM of an inexpensive server-class machine), but might eventually be at very large transaction volumes,” explains Andresen.Initial block download is a problem today (it is annoying to have to wait several hours or days to sync up a new node), and this scheme could make it orders of magnitude faster by shifting the time when full transaction data is broadcast from initial block download to new transaction announcement.‘Full-Node Operators Have the Right Incentives to Always Serve Correct UTXO Bit-Vectors’ Andresen believes the best option is to let “node operators hand-pick one or more semi-trusted nodes to get fast boot-strapping.” “That is simple, and there are plenty of full-node operators who have the right incentives to always serve up correct UTXO bit-vectors,” Andresen adds.     To ponder: is speeding up initial block download and saving memory at the cost of 2-3 times the bandwidth for new transaction announcements the right tradeoff? A gigabit per second connection is 75 gigabytes every ten minutes, so plenty of bandwidth for a few gigabytes of transaction data that translates into a gigabyte-sized block.Bitcoin Cash Community Asks: Is Gavin Back? Thecommunity seems elated that Andresen has contributed a new idea for the BCH network. On enthusiast on the /r/btc Reddit forum writes, “this is the first official confirmation that Gavin is building for BCH, unless I’m mistaken.” Many BCH supporters recollected the Tweet Andresen published this past November ;  Bitcoin Cash is what I started working on in 2010: a store of value AND means of exchange. What do you think about Gavin Andresen proposing the UTXO bit-vector idea for the Bitcoin Cash network? Gavin Andresen Throws Support Behind Bitcoin Cash
Satoshi Nakamotos Confidant Gavin Andresen Throws Support Behind Bitcoin Cash Gavin Andresen is the latest significant player in bitcoin to pledge support for bitcoin cash, referring to it as the chain most true to Satoshis original vision. In a tweet published on the 12th of November, Andresen has emphasized his belief that the high fees associated with BTC are undermining it as an effective means of exchange. “Bitcoin Cash Is What I Started Working on in 2010: A Store of Value and Means of Exchange. ”Former lead developer for bitcoin, Gavin Andresen, has thrown his support behind bitcoin cash. In a recent tweet, Andresen has published a comment effectively describing bitcoin cash as the successor to his early work on the bitcoin project. Andresens tweet speaks to the core utilities requisite of a money commodity, emphasizing the threat the high fees pose to bitcoins core mission of providing a fast and frictionless decentralized means of payment that is available for use by all. For many, without facilitating reduced barriers to access and ease of use for microtransactions, bitcoin runs the risk of principally being employed as a speculative asset used by individuals able to justify the significant costs now associated with making transactions. The tweet comes shortly after numerous businesses announced that they would be supporting bitcoin cash rather than BTC due to reduced fees.

Blockchain 101 Ep 09 - Nakamoto's successor Gavin Andresen
Gavin Andresen is Bitcoin's core development team member and one of the few whom Nakamoto emailed prior to his disappearance. Gavin came in touch with Bitcoin in 2010, began submitting codes to Nakamoto to optimize Bitcoin's core system. Nakamoto gradually started to trust Gavin's code. One day, Nakamoto asked Gavin if he could put his email address on the homepage of Bitcoin and he agreed. After Nakamoto retreated behind the scenes, Gavin became a leader within the Bitcoin community. Gavin formed Bitcoin's core development team, striving to fix loopholes in Bitcoin's code and improving the software's stability. In 2012, Gavin founded the non-profit Bitcoin Foundation. Bitcoin’s success can be mainly attributed to the outstanding contributions of Gavin and his team. Andreas Antonopoulos, Matt Corallo, Greg Maxwell, Michael Perklin, Gavin Andresen. Andreas M. Antonopoulos is a technologist and serial entrepreneur who has become one of the most well-known and well-respected figures in bitcoin. He is the author of “Mastering Bitcoin”, published by O’Reilly Media and considered by many to be the best technical guide to bitcoin. As an engaging public speaker, teacher and writer, Andreas makes complex subjects accessible and easy to understand. As an advisor, he helps startups recognize, evaluate, and navigate security and business risks. As a bitcoin entrepreneur, Andreas has founded a number of bitcoin businesses and launched several community open-source projects. He is a widely published author of articles and blog posts on bitcoin, is a permanent host on the popular Let’s Talk Bitcoin Podcast, and a frequent speaker at technology and security conferences worldwide. Matt Corallo is a long-time Bitcoin developer who has been working on pioneering sidechain and Bitcoin extensibility technology since its inception. He has actively contributed to Bitcoin Core and its testing infrastructure, and to BitcoinJ, a Java implementation mainly focussed on lightweight applications. He moonlights as a Whisper Systems developer and researches secure hardware. Greg Maxwell was one of the key architects of the two-way peg which makes sidechains possible. He has been a Bitcoin core developer since 2011, and is one of the most active reviewers of cryptographic protocol proposals in the Bitcoin industrial ecosystem. He has contributed to many widely-used techniques in the Bitcoin space, such as the homomorphic key derivation used in BIP32 and trustless privacy-preserving techniques such as CoinJoin and blinded proof of solvency. Greg is a long-time free software developer and comes to Blockstream from Mozilla where he contributed to the Daala video compression project and coauthored the Opus audio codec (RFC 6716). He also has over 15 years of experience developing, implementing and operating embedded systems and protocols for large-scale networking. For many in the Bitcoin community, Greg is likely the person telling you that your protocol is broken and why, but he usually feels pretty bad about it. Michael Perklin is the president of C4, a non-profit standards organization dedicated to developing and maintaining standards that assist organizations in using blockchain technology such as Bitcoin. Through C4, Michael co-authored the industry's first security standard - the CryptoCurrency Security Standard - which is being adopted by companies and organizations throughout the industry as the gold standard for implementing and auditing proper security for cryptocurrencies like bit coin.

The future of Bitcoin is in Peercoin
-Gavin Andresen, Chief Scientist at the Bitcoin Foundation, predicts the fall of Bitcoin as we have known it. EconTalk Episode, April 2011 Talk: http://www.econtalk.org/archives/2011/04/andresen_o Transcript: "No, It is completely distributed at the moment. And, I mean, that will begin to change as we scale up I don't want, I don't want to over-sell Bitcoin. As we scale-up, there will be, huh, there will be bumps along the way. I'm completely confident of it. Huh, well, for example, as the volume of transaction come up.. You know, right now, I can run Bitcoin on my home personal computer and communicate over my [...] online. And I get every single Bitcoin transaction that's happening everywhere in the world. As we scale up, that won't be possible anymore, you know. If there are, you know, millions of Bitcoin transaction happening every second, there'll be a great problem for Bitcoin to [...]. It means it's very popular, it's very [..] trusted but obviously I won't be able to run it on my own personal computer. Huh, you know, it will take kind of dedicated, you know fleets of computers with a high speed network interfaces and you know that kind of big iron, huh .. huh to actually do all the transaction processsing. I'm confident that will happen and that will evolve but you know all the people right now who are trying to generate bitcoin on their own computers who like the fact that they can via, via self-contained unit, I think, they may .. they may not be so happy if Bitcoin gets really big and they can no longer do that - they'll have to start to trust somebody who is running one of these huh bigger data servers.” -Gavin Andresen
