Investing in Water - Gabelli Research analyst Jose Garza (3-6-2018)

Investing in Water - Gabelli Research analyst Jose Garza (3-6-2018) Invest with Us 1-800-GABELLI (800-422-3554) http://facebook.com/gabellitv GabelliTV Transcript: Hello, my name is Jose Garza, and I am a Water Industrials and Infrastructure analyst at Gabelli & Company. Today, I’m going to talk to you a little about water investing. The global water market is approximately $600 billion. This is split roughly evenly between Equipment & Services and End Users. Secular growth in the water sector will be driven by population growth and increasing water intensity. Water is fundamental to human needs, from the needs of the individual to needs for agricultural and industrial production. Importantly, the middle class globally is set to nearly triple by 2030 to nearly 5 billion people. This growing middle class will increase global water intensity as they seek products that require additional energy in the manufacturing process or more protein-rich food. According to the WHO, water scarcity already affects one in three people in the world and almost one-fifth of the world's population lives in an area where water is physically scarce. A tool in fighting this water need will be increased efficiency within the infrastructure itself. Therefore, we recommend that investors focus on companies that possess leading positions in high technology applications that promote efficiency and safety. There are any number of companies that serve the water industry and which we follow such as pump manufacturers Xylem, Gorman-Rupp, Pentair, and Franklin Electric; meter manufacturers such as Badger Meter, Roper, and Itron; irrigation companies such as Lindsay and Valmont; valve manufacturers such as Mueller Water, Rexnord, and Watts Water; and even their channels of distribution such as Ferguson and HD Supply. Over the past year there have been several large transactions to focus more heavily on water, in particular Suez’s acquisition of GE Water and Pentair’s decision to split its company. We believe companies increasingly understand the significance of serving the water market and expect similar decisions to continue going forward.

Top 3 ETFs for Investing in Water in 2017

04:50
https://goo.gl/QPCkqk - Start earning with binary options like millions of traders do It's impossible to overstate our dependence on water. Even though roughly 70% of the earth is covered by water, only a tiny fraction of 1% is fresh and readily accessible to sustain over 7 billion people. (See also: The Economic Effects of Water Shortages.) In fact, the United Nations authored a report in 2015 suggesting that the world may only have 60% of its required water by 2030, absent major global policy changes. The bottom line is that water is a precious and increasingly scarce commodity, so now might be the right time to consider adding it to your portfolio for long-term growth. (See also: Should Water Be Privatized?) More investment advisors are recommending commodities as a dedicated asset class to hedge other assets in your overall portfolio. If you're looking at diversifying your commodities holdings to include exposure to water, you could also look at individual water utilities stocks if you have the time and inclination – or you could check out the emerging class of water exchange-traded funds (ETFs) to hedge your bets. Here are three water ETFs that are outperforming their peers. All figures as of July 14, 2017. PowerShares Water Resource Portfolio ETF (PHO) This is the largest and arguably the most popular water ETF, with over $804 million under management. Unlike other water funds, PHO is U.S.-centric, with a basket of 37 holdings that tilts toward mid- and smaller-cap companies, heavy on machinery and utilities and light on industrials. PHO's top 10 holdings comprise over 61% of the portfolio and feature names such as Ecolab Inc. (ECL) and Waters Corporation (WAT). (See also: Four Interesting Ways to Invest in Water.) Guggenheim S&P Global Water Index ETF (CGW) As the name suggests, this fund tracks the S&P Global Water Index and invests in companies of all market caps that stand to benefit from the increased demand for water, including water quality and delivery infrastructure. Although CGW has global exposure, it is heavily weighted to the U.S. (roughly 43% of its holdings) and the U.K. (roughly 15%). There are currently 50 companies in the fund's basket, with the top 10 holdings including major industry names such as Geberit AG (GBERY) and American Water Works Company, Inc. (AWK). (See also: Investing in Water: Risks to Consider.) PowerShares Global Water Portfolio ETF (PIO) The PIO portfolio tracks the Nasdaq OMX Global Water Index and focuses on global companies that create products for water conservation and purification. As you might expect, the portfolio is heavily tilted toward industrials and utilities, with a strong preference for large-cap growth and value. The portfolio is pretty concentrated as well, with the top 10 holdings accounting for over 56% of its assets. Top names include Ecolab, Veolia Environnement S.A. (VEOEY) and Danaher Corporation (DHR). While investor preference tends to be for PHO, this is a good play for investors with confidence in the fund's top holdings. (See also: Water: T

How tap water is produced in Singapore?

01:57
Driven by a vision of what it takes to be sustainable in water, Singapore has been investing in research and technology. Today, the nation has built a robust, diversified and sustainable water supply from four different sources known as the Four National Taps (water from local catchment areas, imported water, reclaimed water known as NEWater and desalinated water). Singaporeans have been enjoying good quality water for the last five decades as it has a sound watershed management, an effective water treatment processes and continued investments in R&D. This video shows how water from the reservoirs is treated at the Waterworks before it is sent to consumers. Singapore’s tap water is well within the World Health Organisation drinking water guidelines, and is suitable for drinking without any further filtration. Water Stocks Offer Smart Play on the Commodity of the Future

02:48
Oil may have dominated the headlines in recent decades, but investors seeking the commodity of the future should look to water, said Matthias Kuhlmey, head of global investment solutions at HighTower. 'You have a misaligned supply/demand issue which is currently unfolding in the world,' said Kuhlmey. 'In the next few years more than half of the global population will live in areas with high water stress and then you have a significant infrastructure challenge.' Regarding that infrastructure challenge, nearly $22 trillion, or 1.3 times U.S. GDP at current figures, will need to be invested in water-related infrastructure projects over the next 20 years simply to maintain the status quo, according to Kuhlmey. When it comes to investing in water, Kuhlmey said the choices are limited being that there are only about 100 publicly-listed water related companies globally, most of which fall firmly within the small-cap category. Finance for water is an investment in the future

00:30
Through decades of research Water.org has discovered there are millions of families spending more than 20% of their income on water. They are caught in a cycle of poverty, unable to afford permanent access to water in their homes and beholden to water merchants who charged exorbitant fees. The truth is that many of these families can get a water or sanitation solution in their home for a fraction of their annual water costs. All they need is access to affordable financing to make this a reality. We believe that if we can provide people with small, affordable loans for water connections and toilets, we can transform and empower people to participate in the solution - allowing them to define their own futures and those of future generations.

There is certainly some overlap between the two funds in terms of having similar investments, but I’m ok with that as long I believe that the companies within the fund is invested in are solid companies. Why I’m currently invested this way? There are a few reasons I’m invested this way. I want to take a moment to explain why that is so you can understand my mindset. - Age 33 years old at the time of making this video. I can afford to take risks. Especially since I plan on working at least another 30 years. I need this money to grow. - We have other investments. We have a brokerage account and 2 Roth IRAs that we consistently invest in each month. In those accounts we primarily invest in dividend paying blue chip stocks, REITs, etc. Are investments are more conservative in these accounts which is why I’m so focused at achieving growth in my 401(K) The downsides of my currently investment allocation – When the stock market finally does crash my investments are doing to go down pretty hard, possibly more than the S&P 500, because my portfolio’s beta is slightly higher than 1.06. I know we are due for a major correction or crash, but I am totally ok with this at my age. I would love to this thing crash while I’m still young. I’m going to keep investing either way, because it is nearly impossible to correctly time the market. The good news is my current portfolio’s sharpe ratio is slightly better than the S&P 500. How are my 401K funds performing? Obviously we have been in a bull market for around 10 years now so my investments have been performing well. I’ve been able to achieve around a 10% return or higher every year on my investments. In 2017 I had a total return of 28%. I realize these results will not last forever, but they are good for now. YTD performance for 2018 is around 10% How much I contribute to my 401K per month? Currently I contribute $1,000 per month to 401(K). When I first started I think I only contributed about $300 per month. Plan to keep increasing this amount overtime by $100 per year if possible. Why do I not max out my 401K? I want to stay flexible with our investment choices outside of our 401K) plans. I can go into more detail on this in a future video with you guys. Will these 401(K) Investment allocations change overtime? Yes, my next move is to allocate future contributions to a small cap growth fund. Small-caps have been doing pretty well in my opinion. Maybe 5 – 10%. Other important factors we take into consideration before we invest in our 401(K). Things to consider before investing in your 401K - The ability to save 25% - 50% of our net monthly income after 401(K) contributions. This very important to us, because if we can save and invest 50% of our income throughout our life we have a good shot at building wealth, and having a good retirement. - No debt besides mortgage. If I had other debt I would probably not be investing as heavily. - About 20% of our net worth is in cash so we can take advantage of a market crash, especially in the area of real estate. ♦ Investing in the stock market!: https://goo.gl/yVAoES ♦ Save money, budget, build wealth and improve your financial position at any age: https://goo.gl/E97nJj You can find our content on other internet planets such as....... Elizabeth Moeller on a New Wave of Investment in Water

02:06
In this LEVICK Insights video interview, Elizabeth Moeller, a Partner at Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, discusses how recent and expected developments in U.S. water policy may lead to a new wave of investment spurred by public-private partnerships. With billions of dollars flowing to the EPA and Corp of Engineers to improve water quality, flood control, and hydro-electric power generation, as well as the expected passage of the Water Resources Development Act, we may soon see significant investments from private equity groups seeking to leverage the current political landscape into lucrative opportunities.

Green Talks LIVE | Financing water: Investing in Sustainable Growth

01:06:20
‌Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals will require a historic scaling up of investment in water. The benefits from strategic investment in water security could exceed hundreds of billions of dollars annually by delivering valuable water services and reducing risks of flood and drought. To date, a strong economic case for water-related investment has failed to translate into a compelling financing case at scale globally. What policies and financing approaches can help to unlock investment and mobilise additional sources of capital? How to ensure that financing flows to investments that contribute most to water security and sustainable growth? On 9 April 2018, Haje Schütte of the OECD Development Co-operation Directorate, Xavier Leflaive and Kathleen Dominique of the OECD Environment Directorate, and Esther Delbourg, Head of Responsible Insurance at AXA, discussed the challenges of financing water, innovative solutions and ways forward to accelerate action. The presentation drew on emerging messages from The Roundtable on Financing Water, a global public-private platform established by the OECD, the World Water Council and the Netherlands.
