Georgia - 'Lari' Introduced As New Currency

01:45
T/I: 11:04:08 Georgia introduced its long-awaited new currency on Monday (25/9) in a bid to bring stability to its beleaguered economy. Georgians have one week to exchange their "coupons", an interim currency which has become a symbol of inflation, for the new Lari. The lari is the keystone of a broad new economic reform programme designed and supported by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. Georgian Head of State Eduard Shevardnadze, speaking on national radio, said that any attempt to use US dollars or Russian rubles would be punishable by law. This will have a significant effect on Georgians, since they prefer to use dollars and rubles for their daily transactions. SHOWS: GEORGIA, 25/9; ws of people queuing to trade in old money; man at bank window; money in counting machine; money being handed over; vs shots of new currency; head of georgian bank nodar dzhavakhvili sot saying that one lari will be equal to a million coupons and that for 1-2 months the central bank will support an exchange rate of 1.3 lari to the US dollar; shots of new lari; georgian head of state eduard schevardnadze sot saying that it was a great day for georgia; vs shots of the new currency 1.45 You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/youtube/04df6b4c3ad5c5ce1a8e640514622543 Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork

GEORGIA: NATIONAL BANK INTRODUCES NEW CURRENCY

01:20
Natural Sound In a desperate bid to stabilise its economy, the former Soviet republic of Georgia has introduced a new currency, the lari. Georgians will have one week to exchange their coupons, an interim currency that has plummeted in value since its introduction in 1993. Attention is focused on the Georgian National bank this week as it introduces a new currency in the hope that it will help its ailing economy. Georgians stood in queues from early morning to exchange their old coupons for the new currency- the lari. Named after the ancient Georgian word for money and trade, the lari will be the only legal currency in the Caucasus Mountain nation after October the 2nd. It will trade at about one lari to one (m) million existing coupons - about 77 cents. The International Monetary Fund granted a 60 (m) million (U-S) dollar loan to back the new currency, which was printed in France. Georgian leader Eduard Shevardnadze said he introduced the lari now because the hard currency reserves needed to strengthen the existing coupon would be better spent on the lari. But opponents of Shevardnadze, who is widely expected to win presidential elections on November 5th, have accused him of using the new currency to buy votes. The Georgian leader also recently raised official state salaries by 50 per cent. But the raise will make little difference to the citizens of Georgia who exist on an average monthly state salary of two U-S dollars and seventy cents. The government admits citizens need at least seventy dollars a month to survive. War, economic dislocation and the government's tendency to print money to pay salaries quickly, made its coupons virtually worthless. And Georgia's de facto currency has always remained the Russian rouble. The Georgian government's main task over the next few weeks will be to convince the market traders about the stability of the lari. Traders at Tbilisi's central Soldiers' Bazaar accepted the new currency with some skepticism but they have little choice but to trade with it. Jail sentences of up to two years have been introduced for those who refuse to use the lari, all part of the new monetary reforms. Where to change money in Georgia (Honest Georgian Guide)

00:43
Hello there and welcome to Georgia. Today I’m going to tell where to change money because it is important that you have Georgian Lari (our currency). Of course, you can pay with your credit card in many places, but a lot of people still like to have the local cash. Here are some tips on where to change money: 1. If you want to change money in the city center of Tbilisi and at the same time get a great rate – you should go to the Giorgi Akhvlediani Street, there are several exchange places and they have best rates. By the way, on that street, you also can find cool pubs. Map: https://tinyurl.com/y7d4jssg 2. Avoid exchanging money in very touristic places such as Freedom Square, Old Town, etc. Usually, they have a very bad rate with a gap as high as 1.0 between sell and buy options. 3. It's impossible to find exchange companies in the villages. So always exchange money before you leave the city. If you are in small towns you may use banks, as there are not so many options for exchange.

Soldiers taking protesters away STORYLINE: Demonstrators seeking the resignation of President Eduard Shevardnadze and the invalidation of allegedly rigged elections kept up their protest outside the Georgian parliament for a sixth day on Thursday. Mikhail Saakashvili, leader of opposition party the National Movement, addressed the crowd, saying it was necessary to continue the fight for the freedom, but peacefully. There is a growing sense of panic on the streets of Georgia, and people are exchanging lari, the Georgian currency, into US dollars, fearing the national currency will lose its value rapidly. On Wednesday evening, Shevardnadze was expecting to meet opposition leaders, but they did not turn up for the meeting. On Thursday some protesters tried to organise a hunger strike outside the presidential office, but they were quickly moved on by Georgian police. The six protesters were members of the National Movement opposition bloc. Economy, unemployment main for Georgians

02:05
(8 Oct 2016) The economy and unemployment were the main concerns for Georgians visiting their local famers' market on Saturday as the country went to the polls to elect members of Parliament. Georgia remains troubled by high unemployment of about 12 percent, low pensions and devaluation of local currency. The governing Georgian Dream coalition, and the United National Movement, appear certain to be the largest vote-getters; polling suggests each getting around 25 percent support. Only one other party appears likely to clear the five percent support required to be allotted party list seats. America's Roundtable: Dr. Steve Hanke - The US Economy, Money and Monetary Policy

18:27
Dr. Steve Hanke lays down the main cause of the financial and economic crisis that spread around the world. Dr. Hanke explains the inadequate inflation targeting in the US taking into account just the consumer price index while exempting asset and commodity prices (such as housing and gas prices), discusses USD-EUR exchange rate and relevant price fluctuations. We discuss Dr. Hanke's article published in the August 2012 issue of Globe Asia under the title, "Money, Where's the Money?" http://www.cato.org/publications/commentary/money-wheres-money http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/columnists/money-wheres-the-money/537587 Further reading: http://www.cato.org/pubs/journal/cj31n3/cj31n3-20.pdf Events: "Greed, Irresponsibility, or Policy Mistakes: What Caused the Recession?," February 5, 2010 [Capitol Hill Briefing] Link: http://www.cato.org/event.php?eventid=6901 Dr. Steve Hanke's biography: Steve H. Hanke is a Professor of Applied Economics and Co-Director of the Institute for Applied Economics, Global Health, and the Study of Business Enterprise at The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Prof. Hanke is also a Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute in Washington, D.C.; a Distinguished Professor at the Universitas Pelita Harapan in Jakarta, Indonesia; a Senior Advisor at the Renmin University of China's International Monetary Research Institute in Beijing; a Special Counselor to the Center for Financial Stability in New York; a member of the National Bank of Kuwait's International Advisory Board (chaired by Sir John Major); a member of the Financial Advisory Council of the United Arab Emirates; and a contributing editor at Globe Asia Magazine. In the past, Prof. Hanke taught economics at the Colorado School of Mines and the University of California, Berkeley. With Currency Tumbling, Georgians March Against Government

01:01
Tens of thousands of Georgians marched on Saturday in one of the biggest anti-government rallies of recent years, blaming the authorities for economic crisis and worsening crime. Protesters, led by activists and leaders of the opposition United National Movement, marched down Tbilisi's main avenue waving the national flag as well as the European Union flag and holding posters that read "Resign". Many protesters said they wanted the government, initially formed under the premiership of tycoon Bidzina Ivanishvili, to resign. The opposition also accuses the government of using the justice system to settle political scores with the former government of ex-president Mikheil Saakashvili. http://feeds.reuters.com/~r/Reuters/worldNews/~3/J3mJXwy5tRY/story01.htm http://www.wochit.com

The Wednesday evening downpour in the Dusheti region, 40 kilometres (25 miles) north of Tbilisi, flooded more than 200 homes and causing millions of lari (dollars) in damages. The rains also washed out roads in the region. Residents managed to save the woman's husband and her grandson when flood waters filled her home's ground floor, but the woman drowned. It was the fourth time in the past month that the region was hit by severe weather. Spring floods that washed through the capital and western Georgia were called the worst to hit this former Soviet republic in two decades.
