Are you focused on bringing in clients with $1 million or more in investable assets? Are you focused on small business owners? Professionals? Are you dealing with C-suite executives? Your starting point is to identify your ideal client profile. Tip #2: Match Your Ideal Client Profile to Our Affluent Research It's important that you understand what type of marketing the affluent respond to. Where are their eyes and ears? Our affluent research is very clear, there are five high-impact marketing activities today's affluent respond favorably to: 1. Personal Introductions 2. Referral Alliance Partners 3. Socializing and Networking 4. Word-of-Mouth Influence 5. Intimate Client Events Tip 3#: Take Inventory of Your Affluent Clients and Referral Alliance Partners Each of your affluent clients have seven spheres of influence. Within these spheres of influence are your personal introductions. The seven spheres are: 1. Family 2. Neighbors 3. Colleagues 4. Organizations 5. Recreation 6. Professionals 7. Friends Your goal is to uncover prospects through each of these seven spheres. Not all of them are going to be ideal prospects, but you will find your fair share. You also need to assess the CPAs and attorneys you are targeting to and make certain their clients fit your ideal client profile as well. Tip #4: Create Your Relationship Management and Relationship Marketing Calendar Next, plan the social interactions you will be having with clients and referral alliance partners. Plan the social events you will be attending and determine the intimate events you will be hosting. We recommend at least bi-monthly intimate events. The idea is to put structure around your relationship management and relationship marketing plan. Tip #5: Create a Budget So, you have a great relationship management and relationship marketing plan - let's put some dollars behind it. Our research tells us that elite advisors spend four percent or more of their total revenue on their relationship management and relationship marketing budget. This is an investment in your practice. You are schmoozing your clients and at the same time, marketing for new clients. Now you have a great plan, designed for a financial advisors, but the best plan is worthless without execution. This is a very complicated world. It’s a very noisy world. And we’re not going to get a chance to get people to remember much about us. No company is! And so, we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us. Now Apple, fortunately, is one of half-a-dozen best brands in the whole world. Right up there with Nike, Disney, Coke, Sony — it is one of the greats of the greats. Not just in this country, but all around the globe. But even a great brand needs investment and caring if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality. And the Apple brand has clearly suffered from neglect in this area in the last few years. And we need to bring it back! The way to do that is NOT to talk about speeds and fees. It’s NOT to talk about bits and mega-hertz. It’s NOT to talk about why we are better than Windows. The dairy industry tried for 20 years to convince you that milk was good for you. It’s a lie, but they tried anyway. And the sales were falling. And then they tried “Got milk” and the sales went up. “Got milk” wasn’t even talking about the product. In fact, it focuses on the absence of the product. But the best example of all, and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen, is Nike. Remember, Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes!!! And yet, when you think of Nike you feel something different than a shoe company. In their ads, as you know, they don’t ever talk about the product. They don’t ever tell you about their air soles and why they are better than Reebok’s air soles. What does Nike do in their advertising? They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That’s who they are, that’s what they are about! Apple spends a fortune on advertising — you’d never know it….you’d never know it! So…when I got here, Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that…you know…four years from now we would pick one. And we blew that up and we hired Chiat\Day, the ad agency that I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 (by Advertising Professionals). And…we started working about eight weeks ago, and the question we asked was, “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for…where do we fit in this world?” And what we’re about isn’t making boxes for people to get their jobs done — although we do that well. We do that better than almost anybody, in some cases. But Apple is about something more than that! Apple at the core…its core value — is that, we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. That’s what we believe! And we have had the opportunity to work with people like that. We’ve had the opportunity to work with people like you; with software developers, with customers, who have done it. In some big, and some small ways. And we believe that, in this world, people can change it for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that actually do! And so, what we’re going to do in our first brand marketing campaign in several years, is to get back to that core value! A lot of things have changed. The market is in a total different place than where it was a decade ago. And Apple is totally different — and Apple’s place in it is totally different. And believe me, the products, and the distribution strategy, and the manufacturing are totally different…and we understand that. But values and core values — those things shouldn’t change. What Does a CFO Do, Strategic & Financial Planning
http://GatewayCFO.com - Where is your business going? Have you looked at your company's plan, both strategic and financially? In this installment of "What Does a CFO DO" we talk about the CFO's role in the strategic and financial planning process. For a small business owner, with a company of any size, it's critical that you have a trusted advisor on your team to guide you through this process. Often times, the first step is to work with your CFO to develop and implement a planning process. This includes a structure for developing annual business plans (including detailed financial budgets), and a system to monitor and report on variances from the plan. If your business is lacking this structure, it's difficult to achieve accountability and maximize performance. It is often the CFO and the business managers that lead, refine, and implement these processes. This planning process is important for many financial reasons, one of which being that it will allow your business to be run in a more controlled manner. Capital expenditures should ideally be made within the context of a pre-established budget. Somebody wants to buy a new tractor, or a new computer...what's in the budget? Your CFO should establish these budgets annually and update as needed to adapt to changing business conditions. Along the same lines, the CFO should evaluate potential purchases and leases, ensuring that they not only fit within the capital budget but also offer the best option for the company's needs. Is your company looking at growth or expansion? This requires in-depth planning to insure that your staffing, facilities, and cash resources are up to the task. Your CFO should incorporate growth implications into your financial projections. The CFO should lead monthly and quarterly meetings with management to review variances from the budget, and present budget updates for the future. It is typically the CFO's role to challenge management on their assumptions, considering their past performance and the company's constraints. Operations and sales personnel are often optimistic in nature, and it's important that the business is operating from a conservative viewpoint. Overstating/projecting your profit or revenue does nothing but harm. Aside from the financial planning, it is also the CFO's responsibility to assist the owner/CEO in the development of the company's mission statement, objectives, and strategies. A CFO can not be focused solely on numbers. They must have operations and general management experience, and be well versed in marketing and sales. At a minimum, your CFO should be working closely with department heads to ensure they are tapped in to the pulse of the company. With this visceral understanding of the company's capabilities and strengths, the CFO should prove to be a trusted advisor to the owner/CEO in charting the organizations near future. I recently read Unshakeable by #1 New York Times Best Seller Tony Robbins, I could not help but relate how investing and financial planning relates to Marketing and planning for business success. I took 6 tips inspired from his book and wanted to share those with you today. Diversify - If you only rely on paid ads, you lead flow can stop the moment money is tight, if you only rely on SEO, an algorithm can change and crush your primary funnel. Social media ads are wild west of algorithms… etc. Email Marketing, and SMS allow you to work a funnel who opts in, this can lead to 20%+ of your business sales if not utilized. Reallocate & Rebalance - Harry Markowitz recommends rebalancing your portfolio yearly. This is no different with Marketing. When its paid ad season, take full advantage! When its your slow season, invest in SEO, and reoccuring sales from current clients. Selling out leads to taking major losses when you are actually on a great road path. All businesses have up and down seasons. Marathon not a sprint - Warren Buffets says the stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient. -- You will get random emails saying “I will get you on page 1 within a month, I know the algorithm like the back of my hand” - you will also get quotes requiring a 1-2 year contract. Our plans are 6 months, make sure you find a partner who doesn’t not promise the world and does not lock you in for life. Like any investment it takes time..but with how many fly by night marketers are out there, it is no wonder people are scared to invest in marketing, just like the stock market! Find a trustworthy partner - It is unbelievable the amount of small businesses who have been hurt either from shady marketers or investment brokers alike. Make sure you find someone you can trust, who has all channels in mind. I have never met someone who has 3-4 financial planners. Why should you have have 1 person for PPC, one for SEO and one for social management, along with a email manager. Our world is SO VERY CONNECTED, find someone who can manage this in one place so they can pivot and correct when needed. All channels work together! Negativity and Loss Aversion - Psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky demonstrated how financial loss cause people twice as much pain as the pleasure they receieve from gain. We were wired to act irrational. One reason the best investors are successful is they override this feeling to sell when they are struggling. This is why it is important to pivot and change your strategy based on what works best. Online there are endless possibilities! Confirmation Bias / Recency Bias - We tend to seek out info that confirm our own thoughts, or reaffirm what we have recently experienced. This relates to tip 2 in a way. We must keep the ability to pivot and rebalance our marketing strategy. Planning for the future of your business or your family takes dedication, and a healthy gut to weather the storm. It's important how to determine the three types of advisors that exist - and determine which one you are. In this short video from a past live CWA advisor training event, John Enright reviews what he thinks the three categories of financial advisor are. High net worth and business owner clients all prefer wealth advisors with a process that is focused on their objectives. In other words, watch this video until the end so you fully understand what HNW clients demand today. Do you focus a lot on getting new applications? While this isn’t inherently a terrible plan, if left on it’s own, relying solely on building new clientele without following through on their objectives or creating unique strategies for them might not be the best platform for growing your business. Why? Advisors who start with implementation, and spend the most time on it, just want to get paid and often think it’s the best business plan due to it’s speed. They spend a lot of time on implementation but then rush through the remaining steps. Speed must equal efficient, right? Not necessarily. If the only real thing you’re concerned with is getting an application, then the truth is you cannot know what the client’s needs are. All you’re doing is selling to them. You can’t know what’s important to them. In a way, it’s kind of backwards. It doesn’t set the stage for a great client experience.
