Tugboat Chief Engineer on Her Way to Nunavut
24 year old Kelsie MacLean from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia is the first female Chief Engineer of the Atlantic Beech tugboat which will be on its way to Baker Lake, Nunavut this summer. The Atlantic Beech is towing barges of cargo and supplies over 4,600 kilometres to support a Nunavut mining operation in Baker Lake. As a 3rd class marine engineer, Kelsie's job will be to maintain the 2,250 horsepower engines of the Atlantic Towing tugboat to ensure reliability and performance during the long range towing job to the Arctic and then back to Saint John, New Brunswick later this year. Kelsie started her career at Atlantic Towing in 2014 as an engineering cadet on the Atlantic Kingfisher in St. John's Newfoundland & Labrador. Kelsie was recently part of the first all-female crew on the Atlantic Willow in Halifax Harbour and now Kelsie becomes the first female Chief Engineer on the Atlantic Beech and the first female Chief Engineer assigned to the annual Nunavut cargo and supplies delivery. In order to find out if hydrocarbons are indeed trapped in the reservoir rock, we must drill to hit them. Bearing in mind the knowledge acquired about the substratum and the topography of the land, the best position for the installation of the drilling equipment is determined. Generally it is vertically above the point of maximum thickness of the geological layer suspected of containing hydrocarbons. The drillers then make a hole in conditions that are sometimes difficult. Of small diameter (from 20 to 50 cm) this hole will generally go down to a depth of between 2000 and 4000 meters. Exceptionally, certain wells exceed 6000 m. One of them has even exceeded 11 000 m! Certain fields can be buried at a depth equivalent to the height of 12 Eiffel Towers ... The derrick is the visible part of the drilling rig. It is a metal tower several tens of meters high. It is used to vertically introduce the drill strings down the hole. These drill strings are made up of metallic tubes screwed end to end. They transmit a rotating movement (rotary drilling) to the drilling tool (the drill bit) and help circulate a liquid called "mud" (because of its appearance) down to the bottom of the well. The drilling rig works like an enormous electric hand-drill of which the derrick would be the body, the drill strings the drive and the drilling tool the drill bit. The most usual tool is an assembly of three cones -- from which comes the name "tri cone" -- in very hard steel, which crushes the rock. Sometimes when the rock being drilled is very resistant, a single- block tool encrusted with diamonds is used. This wears down the rock by abrasion. Through the drill pipes, at the extremity of which the drill bit rotates, a special mud is injected, which the mud engineer prepares and controls. This mud cools the drill bit and consolidates the sides of the borehole. Moreover it avoids a gushing of oil, gas or water from the layer being drilled, by equilibrating the pressure. Finally, the mud cleans the bottom of the well. As it makes its way along the pipes, it carries the rock fragments (cuttings) to the surface. The geologist examines these cuttings to discover the characteristics of the rocks being drilled and to detect eventual shows of hydrocarbons. The cuttings, fragments of rock crushed by the drill bit, are brought back up to the surface by the mud. To obtain information on the characteristics of the rock being drilled, a core sample is taken. The drill bit is replaced by a hollow tool called a core sampler, which extracts a cylindrical sample of several meters of rock. This core supplies data on the nature of the rock, the inclination of the layers, the structure, permeability, porosity, fluid content and the fossils present. After having drilled a few hundred of meters, the explorers and drillers undertake measurements down the hole called loggings, by lowering electronic tools into the well to measure the physical parameters of the rock being drilled. These measures validate, or invalidate, or make more precise the hypotheses put forward earlier about the rocks and the fluids that they contain. The log engineer is responsible for the analysis of the results of the various loggings. The sides of the well are then reinforced by steel tubes screwed end to end. These tubes (called casings) are cemented into the ground. They isolate the various layers encountered. When hydrocarbons are found, and if the pressure is sufficient to allow them come to the surface naturally, the drillers do a flow check. The oil is allowed to come to the surface during several hours or several days through a calibrated hole. The quantity recovered is measured, as are the changes in pressure at the bottom of the well. In this way, a little more knowledge is gained about the probable productivity of the field. If the field seems promising, the exploration team ends the first discovery well and goes on to drill a second, even several others, several hundred or thousand meters further away. In this way, the exploration team is able to refine its knowledge about the characteristics of the field. Engineers reinforced a lifeline on Monday to the miners preparing to keep them supplied with food, water, medicine and communications during the four months it may take to carve a tunnel wide enough to pull them out. A team of doctors and psychiatric experts also arrived on Monday at the remote mine, implementing a plan to maintain the miners' sanity as well. Engineers worked through the night to reinforce the six-inch (15 cm) wide bore-hole that broke through to the miners' refuge on Sunday, more than 2,257 feet (688 meters) below the surface. Using a long hose, they coated the walls with a metallic gel to decrease the risk of more rock falls in the unstable mine and make it easier to pass material in capsules nicknamed "palomas," or doves. The first capsules - which take about an hour to descend from the surface - will include water and food in the form of a high-energy glucose gel to miners who have almost certainly lost significant weight since they were trapped with limited food supplies on August 5. Also being sent down are questionnaires to determine each miners' condition, along with medicines and small microphones to enable them to speak with their families during their long wait. Authorities said the communications equipment could begin working within hours, and that officials were organising the families into small groups to make their talks as orderly as possible. An enormous machine with diamond-tipped drills capable of carving a person-sized tunnel through solid rock at a velocity of 20 metres a day was on its way on Monday to the San Jose gold and copper mine. Engineers also were boring two more narrow shafts to the trapped men to ensure that their lifelines would remain intact while the larger tunnel is being carved. Euphoria that their men survived the collapse and anxiety for what's coming next meant for a sleepless night for the miners' families, who shivered through a cold, foggy night in Chile's Atacama desert. The men already have been trapped underground longer than all but a few miners rescued in recent history. However, thanks to new direct investment from abroad, the nearby Vlahna Mine, home to the second largest chromium reserve in Albania and one of the largest in Europe, is being put to productive use once more following its closure in 2006. To ensure the transition from informal to formal employment, 40 miners are receiving training in occupational safety and health as part of their recruitment, to ensure improved working conditions and long-term job security for the local community. Oymyakon, Russia This town has a reputation of being the coldest inhabited town in the world! The average temperature is around -58 degrees, and it is completely dark for up to 21 hours a day during winter. But in 1933, the temperature dropped to a bone-chilling -90! Because of the temperature, it is practically impossible to grow any crops here, which is one of the major drawbacks for the inhabitants. The people are forced to use food such as frozen fish meat, reindeer meat and the local delicacy – ice-cubed horse blood with macaroni. Yummy! Another problem for the people of Oymyakon is the plumbing. Because of the harsh weather, the plumbing systems will freeze, so the locals have outhouses. Good old outhouses in the freezing weather. As for their cars, people keep them inside heated garages, or simply leave them running outside. Oymyakon is 576 miles away from the nearest major city of Yakutsk, and it will take you a couple of days to get there, so be prepared. But the place has a great reputation, with interesting people, indoor fun and games and an “exotic” cuisine, to say the least. How they manage to keep sane in that weather, though – is beyond me. 9. Easter Island, Chile This is one of the most isolated islands in the world with a population of around 6,500 people. It is 2,500 miles east of Tahiti and the nearest continental point is in Chile, some 2,300 miles away. In 1888, Chile annexed Easter Island, and from then on it’s been considered a part of Insular Chile. As you probably know, Easter Island is most famous for its almost 900 giant stone heads, known as Moai by the Rapa Nui people who carved the figures. These monoliths are from between 1,100 and 1,500 AD and have actual hidden bodies underneath the ground. Their creators were master craftsmen and engineers and there is still much speculation and mystery surrounding their purpose. Easter Island is a volcanic hot spot, similar to Hawaii, but the only regular flights are via LAN airlines from Santiago de Chile. It’s quite out of the way for almost everyone and it is pretty much only convenient if you are doing a trip around the world. 8. Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland This small settlement in Greenland is one of the remotest settlements on Earth. It was founded in 1925, and it’s the farthest of all inhabited areas on Greenland. The only way to get to it is by helicopter or boat! This place, practically at the edge of the world, has a population of just 450 people, but there have been a lot of tourists in recent years. This place is actually very close to the biggest multi-branched fjord system in the world, and a national park so the surrounding scenery is nothing short of amazing. It’s frozen 9 months out of the year and the only way this town can survive is through fishing and hunting. If you want to visit Ittoqqortoormiit as a tourist, it’s totally possible; it has one bright orange guesthouse in town, a pub that opens one night a week, a general store, and a post office. Travel companies can arrange all manner of adventurous excursions, from dog sledding and kayaking to hiking and hunting. Just be ready for chilly weather! 7. La Rinconada, Peru This is a small mining town located high up in the Peruvian Andes. It is officially the world’s highest city, at 5,130 m above sea level. La Rinconada lies on a glacier that’s permanently frozen, and the only way to reach it is by truck via winding roads up the mountain. There is no airport anywhere close by. Raise Climber Mining Conditions This type of mining is best suited to tabular narrow vein ore bodies with enough dip for gravity ore flow. There is often considerably less waste development with raise mining than with regular open stoping. A narrow vein ore body has less ore to soak up waste development costs, making the raise mining method an obvious choice. It is better if the ore body is continuous over several hundred feet vertically. Experience has shown that raises from 75 to 150 metres length are the most economical. The method works best if the ore boundaries can be interpolated between adjacent raises. This allows the drill planning to be done before the production drill is set up in the raise. This is less important in sulphides, where the driller can tell if the bit is in ore by the colour of the cuttings. Raise Climber Mining Method Details The raise climber mining method will generally be comprised of the following steps: Development Bottom Sill: Access and haulage: These drifts are driven from the shaft or established mining areas to the new ore zone. The drifts are commonly sized to accommodate the large scooptrams used for production mucking and are often driven with jumbos. Drawpoints and Climber Nest: Drawpoints can be driven from either footwall or hangingwall, depending on how the ore zone is accessed. The climber nests are always in the hangingwall. The climbers require about 4.3 metres (14') width, 2.7 metres (9') of height and 12 metres (39') of length with extra added on for "Alicabs" and/or for low angle raises. Mucking Swell: It is often best to leave ore in the stopes while blasting because of the support it gives. Tar seeps or "brea" deposits are common in some parts of the state of California, including Ventura County. Asphaltum collected from the seeps was used for both economic and practical purposes in pre-Spanish California. Following the 1859 discovery of oil in the eastern United States, California pioneers attempted to make a commercial venture of extracting and refining asphalt from active seeps, digging pits as deep as ten feet as early as 1861. Shafts were sunk and tunnels were constructed. Oil miners worked in extremely difficult conditions. Miners were subjected to flammable, toxic and often hot conditions in tight dark quarters. Miners in the deeper shafts usually worked without clothes. Today, an estimated half-million workers in the United States are exposed to fumes from asphalt, a petroleum product used extensively in road paving, roofing, siding, and concrete work. Health effects from exposure to asphalt fumes include headache, skin rash, sensitization, fatigue, reduced appetite, throat and eye irritation, cough, and skin cancer. There are currently no specific OSHA standards for asphalt fumes. Exposures to various chemical components of asphalt fumes are addressed in specific standards for the general and construction industries, such as personal protective equipment (PPE). The Thai soccer team has been trapped in a cave since June 23. In a possible new bid for a solution, engineers working for the entrepreneur Elon Musk will be dispatched to Thailand. In a string of tweets, Musk said his tunneling firm, Boring Co., and others will look for new ways to reach the underground chamber in the country’s north. Drilling into the cave and extracting the boys from above has been suggested, but Narongsak, speaking at a news conference, said only 18 of 100 holes that have been located are potentially viable. He pointed out that any drilling process could take months, likening the situation to the 2010 mine rescue in Chile that took 69 days to get the stranded miners to the surface. “We are trying to rule out the impossible,” he said. The boys, he added, “cannot dive at this time” and are not ready to make the almost six-hour journey out of the cave. Two of them and their coach are in poor health. Officials also remain desperately concerned about the weather, with heavy rains forecast within days that could flood the cave again and render futile any efforts to pump water out. While their situation is dire, dozens of people have been rescued from underground emergencies. “We would like to take the minimum risk possible,” he said. “But we can’t wait for the rain.” The governor’s midnight news conference, held just as a drizzle started to fall over the muddy, chaotic rescue site, underscored the lack of a good option to free the boys and their coach after they were found alive Monday night. Getting the boys to dive their way out of the cave has been raised as the most likely possibility, but a retired Thai navy SEAL preparing for that option by placing compressed-air tanks along an exit route ran out of oxygen himself early Friday morning and died. Speaking at a news conference, a commander of the Thai navy SEAL group said the diver was found unconscious about 1 a.m. Friday. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he was later transferred to a hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. “It is sad news,” Pasakorn Boonyalak, deputy governor of Chiang Rai province, said at the news conference. “His job was to deliver oxygen, but he did not have enough on his way back.” The fatality, the first of the rescue mission, has raised fears that a rescue mission could be fraught and even deadly for the boys. For the boys' parents waiting above ground, the news of their safety ended days of waiting and praying. The 12 boys, ranging in age from 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old assistant coach disappeared on June 23 after soccer practice. Their bikes and cleats were found just outside the caves. They apparently went in to explore and became trapped by flooding caused by heavy rain. Now that rescuers have found the boys alive and in good condition, they are giving them high protein liquid food and antibiotics. The Tham Luang Nang Non cave system stretches about six miles into a mountain. More than 1,000 first responders from around the world searched for 10 days. They had to go about two and a half miles from the cave system's entrance – through passages obstructed by thick mud and high water – just to find the group. They were located near a chamber known as Pattaya Beach, which has a higher elevation. Capt. Jessica Tait with the U.S. Air Force was one of 35 Americans who helped in the rescue effort. "Everyone is coming together to figure out the next course of action and how to bring them out as safely and as quickly as possible," Tait said. Rescuers raced to pump out water from the cave Tuesday, as heavy rain is the forecast for the rest of the week. Thailand's rainy season lasts until October, and the cave is regularly flooded. "It is not a hundred percent secure," the governor said Tuesday. "So I cannot give an answer to confirm how many days the kids will have to stay in the cave." A Thai Navy SEAL team will make the final call on how they get the boys out. One option is to teach them to dive with special breathing masks. But the murky water is difficult to navigate even for experienced divers. There is low visibility in the caves and the floodwater can move fast. One of the rescuer workers also said none of the boys know how to swim. The other option is to keep the boys in the cave until the water levels recede, which many experts say is the best option. But that means the boys could be in the cave for weeks if not months.
