Trump Gets Confused By New York Times Article

00:58
President Donald Trump can't keep facts straight in the 24-hour news cycle. In his latest Twitter tirade against the reporting press, President Trump accused to New York Times of writing a "major" fake news story about China. The issue at the heart of Trump's confusion relates to news reporting in a 24-hour cycle with the immediacy of online publishing, and subsequent updates to articles already posted. Early in the morning on Feb. 10th, Trump falsely accused the Times of stating he and China's president had no spoke since Nov. 14th. Trump tweeted they spoke at great length to day before. However, Trump failed to notice the article he read posted before his lengthy telephone call with President Xi Jinping. The Times later updated the story after the phone call. The updated article, ran with a lead addressing their call. http://www.redstate.com/patterico/2017/02/10/trump-unfairly-attacks-new-york-times-fake-news/ http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit Vote It using http://wochit.com

Trump Wants New Libel Laws To Stop 'Horrible And False' Articles - Newsy

01:33
Transcript: In case you haven't noticed, Donald Trump does not like the media. He recently told a crowd in Texas he would stop newspapers like The New York Times from publishing unfavorable articles. "I'm going to open up our libel laws so that when they write purposefully negative and horrible and false articles, we can sue them and win lots of money," Donald Trump said to a crowd in Fort Worth, Texas. The Times has published quite a few editorials painting Trump in a less than flattering light. But it's unlikely Trump would be able to win any lawsuit against the publication unless he managed to nominate someone to the Supreme Court who could work to overturn New York Times Co. v. Sullivan. The president is considered a public figure, and according to the New York Times Co. v. Sullivan precedent, public figures have to prove "actual malice" to win a libel case. That basically means the paper knowingly published a false or improperly researched statement. And since the press protections are rooted in the First Amendment, any unilateral executive actions Trump takes as president to alter those laws would likely overstep his constitutional authority. However, The Washington Post points out "Trump could simply use the bully pulpit to promote a culture of frivolous libel suits that ultimately wouldn't go anywhere but would force media companies to spend precious resources on defending themselves." But hey, at least Trump only threatened to sue the naysayers instead of potentially throwing them in jail like in Egypt, Turkey or China. Our Owen Alterman analyzes. Story: Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein of the Chabad of Poway synagogue had been finalizing his sermon for the last day of Passover when he heard a loud bang and stopped in his tracks. The preacher had just passed his good friend Lori Kaye in the lobby. The pair exchanged smiles, and his immediate thought was that she "may have fell or a table tipped over." Instead, Goldstein found himself face to face with the teenage gunman responsible for killing Kaye and wounding three others. He recapped the dramatic moment for reporters on Sunday as he hailed the heroic acts of the worshippers who risked their lives to save others. "I turn around and I see a sight that I -- indescribable. Here is a young man standing with a rifle, pointing right at me," he said. "And I look at him. He had sunglasses on, I couldn't see his eyes, I couldn't see his soul. I froze." Goldstein's first concern was for Kaye, a 60-year-old long time congregation member, whom he described as a person of "unconditional love." But before he could get to her, "more shots came" and he raised his hands -- eventually losing his right index finger to a bullet despite a four-hour surgery to try to save it. The badly wounded rabbi saw children were still playing in the banquet hall and he rushed to gather them and get them out -- including his own four-year-old granddaughter. He was joined in this effort by Almog Peretz, who Goldstein said was an Israeli "war veteran." Peretz "ran into the banquet hall, gathered more children, he got a bullet in his leg, risking himself to save the children." It was then that the assault weapon wielded by the shooter -- named as 19-year-old John Earnest — jammed, creating an opening for others to jump in, said Goldstein. Two others attempted to stop Earnest from fleeing, including Oscar Stewart, an ex-US soldier, who tried to tackle him -- and off-duty Border Patrol officer Jonathan Morales, who began coming to the synagogue after recently discovering his Jewish roots. "I've been told that I may have saved some lives -- I never thought about that I think... I just did what I did," Stewart told reporters earlier. "I'm not a hero or anything, I just did it." Morales meanwhile "was able to discharge his weapon and (hit) the car a few times," said Goldstein.

58:43
Source: https://www.spreaker.com/user/hallicasserjayne/interview-matthew-cooper-andrew-rosentha The Blue Wave is real. And there are all sorts of waves. The Democrats impressive takeover of the House of Representatives and so many State Houses was more the rolling kind. This week on The Halli Casser-Jayne Show we dive into the blue wave and into the storied political coverage of The New York Times when joining me at my table is my partner in politics, journalist Matthew Cooper, and former editorial page editor of the New York Times, Andrew Rosenthal, here to discuss his new book, with a foreword by Maureen Dowd, THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK OF POLITICS: 167 YEARS OF COVERING THE STATE OF THE UNION, Andrew Rosenthal. The podcast is posted on all your favorite sites and apps and at Halli Caser-Jayne dot com. As he does every week, newsman Matthew Cooper joins with Halli for their politics segment, PODCAST AMERICA, in which Matt and Halli slice and dice all things politics. And what a week it has been. The Blue Wave is real. Democrats continue to rack up House seats, Florida remains Florida as a recount was ordered in both the Governor and Senate races. Trump ousted Attorney General Jeff Sessions and replaced him with a WWE-like loyalist, Matthew Whitaker. Trump had a hissy fit in Paris where it drizzles, the Robert Mueller investigation continues on. Then First Lady Melania Trump also had a fit, Nancy Pelosi is fighting for her Speakership, and we’re just beginning. In our second half hour we’re joined by former New York Times editorial page editor and now author of THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK OF POLITICS, Andrew Rosenthal. For 167 years, The New York Times has been in the forefront of political reporting -- from memorable campaigns and elections to controversial legislation, scandals, and issues ranging from immigration, race, and gender to the economy and war. In today’s turbulent times the newspaper’s political coverage is more relevant than ever; not only for the news itself, but because of the paper’s leadership in defending the freedom of the press, a freedom being sincerely challenged in the age of Trump. In the new BOOK OF POLITICS: 167 YEARS OF COVERING THE STATE OF THE UNION, noted former NEW YORK TIMES editorial board editor ANDREW ROSENTHAL, has compiled an anthology that explores the newspaper’s broad scope of unparalleled political coverage and examines what has changed over the decades and how history has—often dramatically—repeated itself in surprising ways. With a foreword by acclaimed columnist Maureen Dowd, including 60 photographs as well as reproductions of front-page stories, here are the noteworthy political articles from The New York Times archives that are sure to engross readers. The Blue Wave is Real, Trump underwater, the Florida recount, politics and The New York Times, Robert Mueller, Melania Trump, loyalist Matthew Mueller…join Halli and Matthew Cooper and Andrew Rosenthal on The Halli Casser-Jayne Show the podcast posted 3 pm ET at Halli Casser-Jayne dot com.

On this weekend’s edition of “The New York Times Close Up With Sam Roberts, ”an in depth look at President Trump’s wealth, acquired long before he entered politics, even before he could walk or talk, has cast renewed scrutiny on his and his family’s business dealings….and much more importantly, his honesty. The Times reporting this week provided more than a blueprint, it’s built an extraordinary framework. New York Times Investigative Reporter Russ Buettner explains. NFL Cries Unnecessary Roughness At New York Times Article

05:13
The New York Times recently published an expose on the NFL and some of their similarities to the tobacco industry. Both companies suppressed information about the physical dangers of their product to protect profits. Ana Kasparian, Hasan Piker (Pop Trigger), and Grace Baldridge, hosts of The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below. "This week, NFL lawyers sent a letter to The New York Times demanding that theTimes’s recent investigation into the league’s bogus concussion studies be retracted. It was so limp that it demanded a proper takedown. Thankfully, theTimes was happy to oblige, via a response letter from their own lawyers... "As you know, The Times has a policy of correcting factual errors as promptly as possible. I have reviewed your letter with our editors and reporters, and nowhere does your letter identify any factual error that we have made in our reporting on the ties between the NFL and the tobacco industry. The crux of the letter is the NFL’s complaint that the connections identified by the Article between the NFL and the tobacco industry were not “meaningful.” Obviously, that is an opinion, not a fact.”* Read more here: http://deadspin.com/new-york-times-responds-to-nfls-demand-for-retraction-1768035969 ********** The Young Turks March 31, 2016 Hour 2 https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTpcK80irdQi8ru1JgU7GGCk10FWHWEyi Pittsburgh News Anchor Fired For Racist Comments https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B7YpNCT6-UA&index=1&list=PLTpcK80irdQi8ru1JgU7GGCk10FWHWEyi Man Films People Having Sex In Park To "Protect His Neighborhood" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8TDmjsTBw0&index=2&list=PLTpcK80irdQi8ru1JgU7GGCk10FWHWEyi NFL Cries Unnecessary Roughness At New York Times Piece https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9SxRUZ4OZw&index=3&list=PLTpcK80irdQi8ru1JgU7GGCk10FWHWEyi Chinese Invent New iPhone Body Shame Game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiy0x3HSflg&index=4&list=PLTpcK80irdQi8ru1JgU7GGCk10FWHWEyi ********** The Largest Online News Show in the World. Is Christianity Good for American Politics?

02:03:13
Today, many argue that religious liberty is under assault while others believe that faith is meant for the private realm and its public expression stands in the way of a secular political discourse. This issue is certainly apparent in the controversy surrounding the HHS bill. This being the case, a debate over the role of Christianity in American politics could not be more pertinent. Susan Jacoby, program director at The Center for Inquiry and author of New York Times bestseller, The Age of American Unreason (2008)and Alger Hiss and The Battle for History (2009), is an independent scholar whose work focuses on American intellectual history. Jacoby has been a contributor for more than 25 years, on topics including law, religion, medicine, aging, women's rights, political dissent in the Soviet Union, and Russian literature, to a wide range of periodicals and newspapers. Her articles and essays have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Washington Post Book World, Los Angeles Times Book Review, Newsday, Harper's, The Nation, Vogue, The American Prospect, Mother Jones, and the AARP Magazine, among other publications. Dinesh D'souza, recent author of "What's so Great About Christianity?" and president of the King's College, has been called one of the "top young public-policy makers in the country" by Investor's Business Daily. The New York Times Magazine named him one of America's most influential conservative thinkers. D'Souza's articles have appeared in virtually every major magazine and newspaper, including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Atlantic Monthly, Vanity Fair, New Republic, and National Review. He has appeared on numerous television programs, including the Today Show, Nightline, The News Hour, O'Reilly Factor, Moneyline, and Hannity and Colmes.

Admit it. Republicans have broken politics.

09:59
Neither party is perfect, but Republicans in Congress have been drifting towards political extremism since long before Trump, and they’re making it impossible for Congress to work the way it’s supposed to. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Over the past few decades, both Democrats and Republicans in Congress have moved away from the center. But the Republican Party has moved towards the extreme much more quickly -- a trend that political scientists’ call “asymmetrical polarization.” That asymmetry poses a major obstacle in American politics. As Republicans have become more ideological, they’ve also become less willing to work with Democrats: filibustering Democratic legislation, refusing to consider Democratic appointees, and even shutting down the government in order to force Democrats to give in to their demands. Democrats have responded in turn, becoming more obstructionist as Republican demands become more extreme. And that’s made it really easy for media outlets to blame “both sides” for political gridlock. As political scientists Thomas Mann and Norm Ornstein explain in their book “It’s Even Worse Than It Looks,” journalists feel a pressure to remain neutral when covering big political fights. So politics coverage has been dominated by the myth that both parties are equally to blame for the gridlock in DC. But they’re not. And the only way to stop Republicans in Congress from continuing their drift towards the extreme is to be brutally honest about who’s responsible for breaking our politics. Read more of Ornstein and Mann’s work here: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/02/opinion/sunday/republicans-broke-congress-politics.html On Strikethrough, Vox producer Carlos Maza explores the challenges facing the news media in the age of Trump. Is Christianity Good for American Politics? - The Debate

Opinion Journalism and the Politics of Language

04:18
Complete video at: http://fora.tv/2007/11/07/Solutions_The_Future_Political_Landscape Talking Points Memo blogger Josh Marshall discusses the balance an opinion journalist must hold between political advocacy and informative reporting. ----- On the 60th anniversary of Orwell's Politics and the English Language, George Orwell described political speech as consisting "largely of euphemism, question-begging and sheer cloudy vagueness." Some six decades later, many symptoms of manipulation and propaganda diagnosed by Orwell persist on the American political landscape, along with new disinformation techniques enabled by modern technology. Historians, scientists, philosophers, linguists, cognitive experts, journalists, image-makers, and public figures will debate in three separate sessions the current state of political discourse - and journalism's response to it - on the dawn of a bitterly contested presidential campaign - NYPL Josh Marshall is the publisher of Talking Points Memo, TPMmuckraker, TPM Election Central and TPMCafe. He also writes a weekly column for the Capitol Hill newspaper The Hill. His articles on politics and foreign affairs have appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers across the United States as well as abroad, including the American Prospect, the Atlantic Monthly, the Boston Globe, the Financial Times, , the New Republic, the New Yorker, the New York Post, the New York Times, Salon, and Slate. Marshall graduated from Princeton in 1991 and holds a doctorate in American history from Brown. He lives in New York City with his wife Millet, their son Sam, and their dog Simon.

Trump vs. The Media: CNN, NY Times Shut Out Of White House Briefing

08:10
Donald Trump's attack on the media seems to be directly linked to federal investigations into the relationship between the 2016 Trump campaign and the Russian government. TYT contributor Ryan Grim reports ( http://Twitter.com/RyanGrim ). On the morning after the FBI leaked to the press the fact that White House Chief of Reince Priebus asked the FBI to help President Trump with public relations issues surrounding on the Russia scandal, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer prevented some of the nation's most respected news organizations — all of whom had reported on this — from attending a press gaggle inside the White House. Discussion with Ilya Somin - Democracy and Political Ignorance

01:49:14
"The surplus of quality journalism in print, on the Web, and over the air should give the public little to no excuse for being uninformed about political issues. Never before has so much raw and refined political intelligence been available at such a low cost to citizens willing to buy a cheap computer and Web connection — or pay the bus fare to the local public library. But uninformed the people are, as Ilya Somin delineates in his subversive new book, Democracy and Political Ignorance, and their ignorance is willful!" "More media won't solve political ignorance" - Jack Shafer, Reuters One of the biggest problems with modern democracy is that most of the public is usually ignorant of politics and government. Often, many people understand that their votes are unlikely to change the outcome of an election and don't see the point in learning much about politics. This may be rational, but it creates a nation of people with little political knowledge and little ability to objectively evaluate what they do know. In Democracy and Political Ignorance, Ilya Somin mines the depths of ignorance in America and reveals the extent to which it is a major problem for democracy. Somin weighs various options for solving this problem, arguing that political ignorance is best mitigated and its effects lessened by decentralizing and limiting government. Somin provocatively argues that people make better decisions when they choose what to purchase in the market or which state or local government to live under, than when they vote at the ballot box, because they have stronger incentives to acquire relevant information and to use it wisely. ILYA SOMIN is Professor of Law at George Mason University School of Law. His research focuses on constitutional law, property law, and the study of popular political participation and its implications for constitutional democracy. Somin's work has appeared in numerous scholarly journals, including the Yale Law Journal, Stanford Law Review, Northwestern University Law Review, Georgetown Law Journal, Critical Review, and others. Somin has also published articles in a variety of popular press outlets, including the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times Room for Debate website, USA Today, Wall Street Journal OpinionJournal.com, Newark Star Ledger, Orlando Sentinel, South China Morning Post, Legal Times, National Law Journal and Reason. He has been quoted or interviewed by the New York Times, Washington Post, BBC, and the Voice of America, among other media. He recently testified on the use of drones for targeted killing in the War on Terror before the US Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights, and Human Rights. In July 2009, he testified on property rights issues at the United States Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Somin writes regularly for the popular Volokh Conspiracy law and politics blog. Somin was born in the Soviet Union and immigrated to the United States with his parents when he was six years old. The politically ignorant make bad decisions when voting. Political ignorance is willful.
NYU Florence: Italian Politics Adesso!

01:20:28
NYU Florence La Pietra Dialogues The Italian Politics Adesso! Dialogue with Professors Roberto D’Alimonte, Alessandro Chiaramonte and Nicolò Conti will kick off LPD’s Spring 2015 semester with a presentation of the basics students need to know - the current political situation and the most important issues, actors, and dynamics - to follow Italian politics during their stay in Italy. Florence’s former mayor Matteo Renzi rose to become Italy’s youngest ever Prime Minister last year on a wave of optimism for his ambitious reform agenda and the hope that he would breathe new life into Italy’s faltering political system. Italian Politics Adesso! Thursday, January 29, 2015 Salone dei 500, Palazzo Vecchio Roberto D’Alimonte Roberto D’Alimonte, former professor of political science at the University of Florence, since 2010 teaches at LUISS Guido Carli University in Rome.
