A non profit organization differs from a for profit business in a few key ways. First and foremost, a nonprofit organization must exist to help improve some cause. Examples of such causes can be to help a community, homelessness, nature, human rights, animal rights, or a number of other causes. The other thing that makes an nonprofit organization is the tax expemption they get from the IRS. Additionally, there are some restrictions about how a nonprofit must distribute its profit. If you are still wondering what is a nonprofit, feel welcome to comment in the comments section of this video, and discuss it there. Benefits of Starting a Nonprofit Organization - Running a Nonprofit Business [NEW]

09:37
Benefits of Starting a Nonprofit Organization are many. Running a Nonprofit Business can be greatly rewarding as you help others. How much money can you put into an operating charity, EVEN YOUR OWN? You can actually write off up to __% of your adjusted gross income! Find out exactly how much in this video. Toby Mathis with Anderson Business Advisors sharing my wisdom on on non-profits. This is a topic that's near and dear to my heart. I have a personal philosophy that basically states that if you're good at making money, you should be very generous and make sure that you're taking care of those who can't. I get this from something called The Gospel of Wealth that was written by Andrew Carnegie more than a hundred years ago, Where he basically stated that millionaires were the trustees of the poor. In other words, not that you just give money away but that you do good works with your money and help those that may be not as fortunate as you or maybe they're not as good at making money as you are. If you are good at making money, one of the best places to put it, is inside of your own non-profit. Nonprofit foundations or charitable organizations can also be a great legacy tool to make sure that your kids are taken care of because they always have a place to work. No better example than Milton Hershey, who in 1905 created the Hershey Trust, which established his charitable intent and manages his various charitable activities. Learn about the charitable activities and their different categories. What is NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION? What does NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION mean?

04:02
What is NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION? What does NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION mean? A nonprofit organization (NPO, also known as a non-business entity) is an organization the purpose of which is something other than making a profit. A nonprofit organization is often dedicated to furthering a particular social cause or advocating for a particular point of view. In economic terms, a nonprofit organization uses its surplus revenues to further achieve its purpose or mission, rather than distributing its surplus income to the organization's shareholders (or equivalents) as profit or dividends. This is known as the distribution constraint. The decision to adopt a nonprofit legal structure is one that will often have taxation implications, particularly where the nonprofit seeks income tax exemption, charitable status and so on. The terms nonprofit and not-for-profit are not consistently differentiated across jurisdictions. In layman's terms they are usually equivalent in concept, although in various jurisdictions there are accounting and legal differences. The nonprofit landscape is highly varied, although many people have come to associate NPOs with charitable organizations. Although charities do make up an often high profile or visible aspect of the sector, there are many other types of nonprofit organization. Overall, they tend to be either member-serving or community-serving. Member-serving organizations include mutual societies, cooperatives, trade unions, credit unions, industry associations, sports clubs, retired serviceman's clubs and peak bodies – organizations that benefit a particular group of people i.e. the members of the organization. Typically, community-serving organizations are focused on providing services to the community in general, either globally or locally: organizations delivering human services programs or projects, aid and development programs, medical research, education and health services, and so on. It could be argued many nonprofits sit across both camps, at least in terms of the impact they make. For example, the grassroots support group that provides a lifeline to those with a particular condition or disease could be deemed to be serving its members (by directly supporting them) and the broader community (through the provision of a service for fellow citizens). Many NPOs use the model of a double bottom line in that furthering their cause is more important than making a profit, though both are needed to ensure the organization's sustainability. Although NPOs are permitted to generate surplus revenues, they must be retained by the organization for its self-preservation, expansion, or plans. NPOs have controlling members or a board of directors. Many have paid staff including management, whereas others employ unpaid volunteers and executives who work with or without compensation (occasionally nominal). In some countries, where there is a token fee, in general it is used to meet legal requirements for establishing a contract between the executive and the organization. Designation as a nonprofit does not mean that the organization does not intend to make a profit, but rather that the organization has no 'owners' and that the funds realized in the operation of the organization will not be used to benefit any owners. The extent to which an NPO can generate surplus revenues may be constrained or use of surplus revenues may be restricted.

Here is the iOS app that can help you write a small business plan for your nonprofit or for profit business: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/business-plan-and-coach/id554845193 Here is the Android app to help you write a business plan, and start your nonprofit or for profit business: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=business.premium In this tutorial, I discuss the difference between a nonprofit organization and a for profit business. There are a few main issues that make up the difference between a nonprofit and a for profit business. The first issue is taxation. Nonprofits get a tax exemption from the IRS (in United States). The other difference between a nonprofit and a for profit business is how they distribute profits. Nonprofit organizations must not end up with a surplus, and must use the surplus revenue to either fund the sustaining of the nonprofit, or find what to do with the money. For profit businesses are free to do just about whatever they want with the profits. There are additional differences between a nonprofit, and a for profit business, and I mention those in the video. Generally, not-for-profit organizations are exempt from federal income taxes. However, it is possible for them to engage in activities that result in Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT). This section of the chapter discusses the provisions in the tax code that provide exemption for certain types of not-for-profit organizations, discusses and illustrates the tax form that is used for many of these organizations 0(Form 990), and concludes by examining the unrelated business income sections of the tax code that may cause an exempt organization to pay taxes or even lose its exempt status. Tax Code Section 501 provides that nonprofit organizations organized for charitable purposes may be exempt from federal income taxes. These include civic leagues, trade and professional associations, social clubs and country clubs, fraternal societies, and veterans organizations. In order to qualify as tax exempt, the entity must have a limited purpose, must not have the authority to engage in activities other than exempt purposes, and must not be engaged in political activities. The most common form of tax-exempt organization are 501(c)(3) entities. A 501(c)(3) organization is a “corporation and any community chest, fund, or foundation organized and operated exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific, testing for public safety, literary or educational purposes, or to foster national or international amateur sports competition (so long as none of its activities involve the providing of athletic facilities or equipment) or for the prevention of cruelty to children or animals. The organization also agrees that no part of the net earnings inures to the benefit of any individual or shareholder and the organization agrees to refrain from participating in political campaigns or lobbying for legislation.”2 To apply for tax-exempt status, an organization should file IRS Form 1023, Application for Recognition of Exemption Under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Certain special rules apply to churches and to private foundations, as distinguished from public charities. A public charity is defined as (1) a church, school, hospital, governmental unit, or publicly supported charity; (2) an organization that receives more than one-third of its support from a combination of contributions, membership fees, and gross receipts from exempt activities and no more than one-third of its support from a combination of investment income and net unrelated business income after taxes; (3) an organization operated exclusively for the benefit of organizations already described; or (4) an organization founded and operated exclusively for public safety. The remainder of this section will concentrate on public charities.
