Russia's President Vladimir Putin marks the fifth anniversary of Moscow's annexation of Crimea from Ukraine with a visit to the Black Sea peninsula on Monday. Putin attended the launch of new power plants in Crimea, part of Moscow's efforts to upgrade the region's infrastructure. Ukraine cut off energy supplies to the peninsula and blocked shipments of Crimea-bound cargo via its territory after Moscow annexed the region in 2014. Russia: Turkish produce delivered to Crimea after 10-month ban on imports

01:55
A ferry loaded with produce and construction materials from Turkey arrived in Sevastopol in Crimea on Saturday. It is the first time that Turkey has delivered goods to the Russian peninsula since diplomatic relations between the two countries became strained last year. Footage shows the ferry being unloaded and trucks picking up stocks of fresh fruit produce that had arrived from the Turkish port city of Zonguldak. SOT, Dmitri Vinnikov, Crimean Maritime Agency, (Russian): "Today shipping was conducted from Zonguldak to Sevastopol, a ferry came directly from Turkey to Crimea, this is a very significant shipping because it took place after a 10 month suspension in this direction. We brought citrus fruit and construction materials of Turkish origin to Crimea."

The minimum monthly pension now stands at 7,200 rubles (€154; $209) and the average pension amounts to 10,600 rubles (€226; $308). The average value of payments to pensioners who are former employees of internal ministries and departments amounts to 17,500 rubles (€374; $508). The increase took place in two stages. RUSSIA: MURMANSK: RUSSIAN SUBMARINE BASE

03:19
Russian/Nat U-S officials are hoping for an agreement on closer ties between Russia and NATO when Presidents Clinton and Yeltsin meet in Moscow Wednesday. Russia strongly objects to NATO expanding up to its borders and its defence minister has even threatened retaliation if the Western alliance moves further east. But APTV, during an exclusive visit to Russia's Northern Fleet at Murmansk, discovered that some of the country's key forces would be ill-prepared to carry out such a retaliation. On a peninsula to the north of Murmansk lie the berths of Russia's main atomic submarine base. Just 80 kilometres away across the water is Norway - a country which joined NATO for fear of a Soviet invasion. Despite détente, the submarines still put to sea in preparation for future conflicts. But following the break-up of the U-S-S-R and Russia's economic decline, the fleet, once the pride of the Soviet navy, has fallen onto hard times. Scarce funds have forced down the number of hours submarines are at sea, thus affecting the preparedness of the Russian fleet. SOUNDBITE: (In Russian) \"The navy is in a state of collapse. There is no money to build new vessels and those that are afloat have become obsolete because of lack of funding.\" SUPER CAPTION: Sergei Soroka - First Officer Officers used to be tempted to the arctic port by big bonuses as compensation for the harsh climate and living months in cramp conditions underwater. But military cutbacks have put a stop to such payments. Now the commander of a sub carrying up to 24 atomic warheads receives only 240 U-S dollars a month - his men less than half this amount. Last year, sailors refused to go to sea for two months because the government was unable to pay their wages. Morale is low even among the most loyal and long-serving of officers. SOUNDBITE: (In Russian) \"I wasn't going to quit the navy but I have been driven to it. I'm prepared to serve until the end of my contract but then I'm giving it all up.\" SUPER CAPTION: Sergei Soroka - First Officer The reduction in the number of voyages has already had an impact on the 200 mile neutral zone in the Barents Sea, where NATO vessels formerly feared to enter. Now there are constant forays by their ships, submarines, helicopters and planes based in Norway. The Russian navy believes that not only NATO but nations in the Pacific are eyeing up Russia's arctic trade and fishing route. SOUNDBITE: (In Russian) \"There's been no change in military policy. Maybe the Partnership for Peace seems a good political statement to the laymen. But not for the professional who knows the capabilities of our potential advisory.\" SUPER CAPTION: Mikhail Motsen - Commander of the first flotilla of the Northern Fleet These submarines were once the spearhead of a superpower. But now they stand idly at the moorings, their capabilities blunted as state funding dries up. Many officers acknowledge that things cannot get any worse and that the sun may have set on Russia's future as a global naval force. Pres. Vladimir Putin calls for creation of Russian payment settlement system

05:49
Russian President Vladimir Putin says his country should create its own national payment settlement system. Putin said such a system has worked in countries like Japan and China. Russia is trying to become more independent of the West amid tensions between the two sides over Crimea. Western governments including the US have imposed sanctions on Moscow after Crimea rejoined Russia following a referendum there. Putin's remarks come after two American financial companies Visa and MasterCard suspended their services to Russia.

Visa and Mastercard Stop Supporting Bank Cards In The Occupied Crimea

00:40
Visa and MasterCard, the world's two biggest payment networks, both announced Friday, December 26, 2014, they're stopping services in Crimea. "Visa is now prohibited from offering Visa-branded products and services to Crimea," the company said in a statement. "This means that we can no longer support card-issuing and merchant/ATM acquiring services in Crimea." The move comes after a recent executive order from President Barack Obama. The U.S. has been imposing sanctions since Russian President Vladimir Putin annexed the Crimean peninsula from Ukraine in March. The irony is that Russia recently declared Crimea as a free economic zone, hoping to lure investors to the occupied peninsula. Video source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGkFRZRKzEM

Let’s return Crimea, we cannot afford it, - Russian woman who became “mortgage slave” due to crisis.

01:18
In the past 2 years the value of Russian ruble has dropped by about a factor of 3 - from 33 rubles per 1 US dollar in January 2014, to over 85 rubles per 1 US dollar in January 2016. That happened because of low oil prices (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qC6wyotO9P8), and because of sanctions on Russia for its aggression in Ukraine. Thus, Russians who took mortgages in US dollars now need to make 3 times higher monthly payments. They start to organize protests, with some complaining that Crimea needs to be returned back to Ukraine. Russia Celebrates Annexation Of Crimea With Fireworks

01:30
Moscow welcomed Russia's annexation of Crimea on Friday (March 21) with a fireworks display in the capital's skies over the Kremlin and other landmarks. Muscovites who gathered by the Moscow river to watch the display and celebrate the union, said they were happy Crimea was part of Russia again. Earlier in the day Russian President Vladimir Putin signed laws completing Russia's union with Crimea on Friday, as investors took fright at a U.S. decision to slap sanctions on his inner circle of money men and security officials. Putin promised to protect a bank partly owned by an old ally, which Washington has blacklisted, his spokesman said Russia would respond in kind to the financial and visa curbs, and his allies laughed them off. Yet, Moscow resident took to the streets of the capital late on Friday to celebrate the annexation under the spectacular display of lights. "Crimea has shown us what it means to love the land we live in. This is very important. They reminded us what was the most important thing all those last 20 years," Moscow resident Dmitry said. "This is very nice, almost unbelievable that this event happened, (we) thank Putin who organised this for us," said another Moscow resident, Viktoria. Shares on the Moscow stock exchange - which have lost $70 billion (42 billion pounds) of their value this month - fell sharply after President Barack Obama also threatened on Thursday (March 21) to target major sectors of the economy if Russia tried to move on areas of Ukraine beyond the Black Sea peninsula. The financial noose was already tightening with Visa and MasterCard stopping processing payments for a Russian bank owned by two brothers on the U.S. blacklist. Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said Russia might cancel its foreign borrowing for 2014 and raise less domestically if the cost of issuing debt rose. European Union leaders - who like Obama insist Crimea is still part of Ukraine - imposed their own sanctions on 12 people, including Russian deputy prime minister Dmitry Rogozin and two aides to Putin. Shaken by the worst East-West crisis since the Cold War, they also expressed their determination to reduce the EU's reliance on Russian energy, and signed a political deal with the Kiev leadership that took power after Moscow-backed President Viktor Yanukovich's overthrow last month. http://www.theshortpenguin.com/

Ukraine bank closures in Crimea hit residents

Thousands in Crimea have no access to their savings after Ukraine froze bank accounts following the region's vote to join Russia. Moscow has pledged to compensate Crimeans who have lost their money with payments of up to $20,000. That promise has led to long queues at registration stations housed in former Ukrainian banks. Al Jazeera's Nadim Baba reports from Simferopol.

Russia: 'We made the right choice' - Crimean militiaman on referendum anniversary

03:00
Leonid Lebedev, a member of the People's Militia of the Crimea, believes that the Crimeans, who voted in a 2014 referendum to join Russia, made the right choice. He also recalled the events at the building of the State Council of the Republic of Crimea five years ago in an interview from the region's de facto capital Simferopol on Saturday. "I do not doubt for a moment that we made the right choice," said Leonid. It was his recollection that "the whole of Crimea did not support the movement that was in Kiev." In 2014, demonstrations forced the overthrow of the Viktor Yanukovych's government and led indirectly to the secession of Crimea from Ukraine. That belief is unwavering, even with the passage of time. "No matter what they say here, over these five years, the fact that they have already come to Russia, about the terrible bureaucratic machine in Russia, the fact that there are high taxes there, about something else here and there, about that utility payments are growing - all of this is nonsense compared to what is happening in Donbass," Leonid noted. While re-enacting the night of February 26, 2014, when two people were killed and more than 70 people injured in clashes near the State Council building, Leonid said that the Maidan supporters used knives wrapped in scotch tape to psychologically intimidate their opponents. A series of events marking the five-year anniversary since Crimea joined Russia will take place between March 15 and 18. China Breaks With Russia Over The Crimea.

Follow us on TWITTER: http://twitter.com/cnforbiddennews Like us on FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/chinaforbiddennews On March 18, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Crimean leaders signed a treaty making the peninsula part of Russia. Om March 16 the Crimean peoples' referendum separated the Crimea from the Ukraine. Around the world there are different statements; The US and the EU do not recognize the referendum and decided to impose sanctions on Russia. The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is sitting on the fence. How Crimea issues will affect the relationship between Russia and China attracted international attention. With the Syrian civil war, the CCP prevented the international community from taking tougher action against President Assad with Russia, condemning Western countries supporting the rebels as a violation to Syria's sovereignty. Now will the CCP break with Russia and join the US and the EU on the Crimea sovereignty issue? Some analysts said that the CCP diplomatic position on the Crimea is fixed by internal Xinjiang and Tibet's plight: If they support Russia, Crimea's today is Xinjiang and Tibet's tomorrow. If they support Ukraine, then the allegiances of the CCP and Russia will break. Missing Malaysia Airlines Passengers' Families Proposed a Hunger Strike There are all kinds of news reports 11 days after the Malaysia flight went missing without trace. Passengers' families planned to hold a hunger strike when requesting more accurate information from the Malaysian government in Beijing Lido Hotel. Some family members emotionally shouted slogans with a mini banner saying: "Return my family member! Do not be a political victim! Need the truth!" The same day, Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, Huang Huikang said some information provided by Malaysia including radar documents are very sensitive and unavailable to be public. Huang Huikang also said the incident investigation shouldn't be carried out publicly. Participants in June 4 Memorial Party Investigated According to the VOA, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) are investigating people who participated in the June 4th ceremony in February. The report quoted sources saying the initiators, the former Guang Zhou 8.9 student leaders Chen Wei and Yu Shiwen are the main focus point. Sources said the CCP wonders if people participating in the 25th anniversary celebration for June 4th was initiated by overseas democracy activists. On February 2, 30 people throughout the country came to Zhao Ziyang's hometown Henan Province, Hua County to held grand memorial activities to commemorate the former CCP General Secretary Zhao Ziyang, Hu Yaobang and June 4 victims. 《神韵》2014世界巡演新亮点 http://www.ShenYunPerformingArts.org/

Putin has NO Desire to Use Force in Crimea But Reserves the Right Should Something Happen

01:36
Putin has NO Desire to Use Force in Crimea But Reserves the Right Should Something Happen President Vladimir Putin delivered a robust defense of Russia's actions in Crimea on Tuesday and said he would use force in Ukraine only as a last resort, easing market fears that East-West tension over the former Soviet republic could lead to war. But tension remained high on the ground. Russian forces fired warning shots in a confrontation with Ukrainian servicemen at an air base, and Russian navy ships were reported to have blockaded the strait separating the Ukrainian Black Sea peninsula from Russia. At his first news conference since the crisis began, Putin said Russia reserved the right to use all options to protect compatriots who were living in "terror" in Ukraine, but force was not needed for now.His comments, coupled with the end of Russian war games near Ukraine's borders, lifted Russian bonds and stock markets around the world after a panic sell-off on Monday. Putin denied the Russian armed forces were directly engaged in the bloodless seizure of Crimea, saying the uniformed troops without national insignia were "local self-defense forces". "As for bringing in forces, for now there is no such need, but such a possibility exists," he said. "What could serve as a reason to use military force? It would naturally be the last resort. Absolutely the last." Military personnel, believed to be a Russian serviceman, stands guard on a military vehicle outside ... Western sanctions under consideration against Russia would be counter-productive, he said. A senior U.S. official said Washington was ready to impose them in days rather than weeks. The Russian Foreign Ministry warned that Moscow would retaliate. In Washington, U.S. President Barack Obama acknowledged that Russia had legitimate interests in Ukraine but said that did not give Putin the right to intervene militarily. "President Putin seems to have a different set of lawyers making a different set of interpretations," Obama said. "But I don't think that's fooling anybody." Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said on Tuesday after speaking to Obama over the weekend that the Group of Seven leading industrialized nations were considering meeting in the near future, a move that would pointedly exclude Russia. The G7 became the G8 in 1998 when Russia was formally included. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, on his first visit to Kiev since the overthrow of Russian-backed President Victor Yanukovich, accused Moscow of seeking a pretext to invade more of the country. Kerry laid flowers in Independence Square at a memorial to pro-Western protesters killed by police last month, describing the experience as "moving, distressing and inspiring". He met Ukraine's interim leaders and announced a $1 billion economic package and technical assistance for the new government. Russian servicemen guard the Belbek airport in the Crimea region March 4, 2014. A column of unarmed Putin said there had been an unconstitutional coup in Ukraine, and Yanukovich, who fled to Russia last week, was still the legitimate leader. No Ukrainian government elected "under such terror as we see now" would be legitimate, he said. Kerry said the United States was not seeking a confrontation and would prefer to see the situation managed through international institutions such as the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk told reporters in Kiev that the Ukrainian and Russian governments had begun consultations on the crisis "at the level of ministers". The February 22 ousting of Yanukovich after months of street protests in Kiev and Russia's seizure of control in Crimea have prompted the most serious confrontation between Moscow and the West since the end of the Cold War. Western governments have been alarmed at the possibility that Russia may also move into eastern and southern Ukraine, home to many Russian speakers, which Putin did not rule out. Russia "in control" of entire Crimean peninsulaPlay videoRussia "in control" of entire Crimean peninsula "There can be only one assessment of what happened in Kiev, in Ukraine in general. This was an anti-constitutional coup and the armed seizure of power," he said, looking relaxed as he sat before a small group of reporters at his residence near Moscow. Earlier on Tuesday, Putin ordered troops involved in a military exercise in western Russia, close to the border with Ukraine, back to their bases. He said armed men who had seized buildings and other facilities in Crimea were local groups. But in a sign of the fragility of the situation in Crimea, a Russian soldier fired three volleys of shots over the heads of unarmed Ukrainian servicemen who marched bearing the Ukrainian flag towards their aircraft at a military airfield surrounded by Russian troops at Belbek, near Sevastopol.

Ukraine to respond to Russia's Crimea drills

00:57
The Ukrainian General Staff has reacted to Russian drills in Crimea. Acts of Russia were named as illegal, they also threatened Russia with counter measures. As Vladislav Seleznyov, the Ukrainian General Staff spokesman, said, Kiev would keep a close eye on the maneuvers. ‘The General Staff of Ukraine has a range of plans on prompt response to any challenges from Russia, regardless of place where they occur,’ he noted. However, he refused to reveal any details. He pointed out, that the ‘Ukrainian analysts’ who follow the exercises, figure out risks and make amendments to plans on preparation of their units. As Pravda.Ru reported, large-scale drills of the Russian Airborne forces, the Black Sea Fleet and the Aerospace Forces were started in Crimea. The Novorossiysk, Kamyshin and Ulan-Ude Air Assault Divisions are engaged, as well as some forces and means of the Black Sea Fleet, and the 4th Army of the Air Forces and Air Defence of the Southern Military District. Russia to launch national payment card system

01:41
Russia is set to introduce its own national bank card, also known as Mir [World], both at home and abroad by the end of 2015 said President Vladimir Putin. “We need to launch our own ‘plastic’ [national payment cards] this year,” said Putin during the BRICS/SCO summits in Ufa. He confirmed that the card will not only be available “on the territory of Russian Federation, but also abroad.” Russia also implied that Turkey will be amongst the many countries where the card system will be used. “Russian tourists who travel to Turkey will be able to make payments through our cards,” said Putin according to the Turkish media. While he noted that close to 5 million Russian tourists chose Turkey as their holiday destination in 2014. When Russia annexed Crimea, the European Union and the US issued several sanctions aimed at restricting Moscow’s banking sector, energy and arms industries. International payment operators Visa and MasterCard also took action by blocking cards issued by several banks. However, on April 1 2015, both global payment operators started processing domestic payments inside Russia’s new national processing system. According to Vladimir Komlev, head of the National System of Payment Cards (NSPC), the card will account for about 60 percent of the Russian card market by 2018. There are currently six banks lined up to participate in the NSPC and other international payments systems such as American Express “are at the final stage of verifying the terms” said Komlev.

Russia: Crimea region to be "special economic zone" - Medvedev

00:21
W/S Special cabinet meeting in Simferopol M/S Special cabinet meeting in Simferopol W/S Special cabinet meeting in Simferopol SOT, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev (in Russian): "It is no secret we have incredible opportunities for promoting tourism in Crimea. It is obvious Crimea's tourism industry has a lot of potential, and may serve as the driving engine for the entire peninsula. There aren't a lot of regions in Russia that can boast such diversity in cultural background and historic landmarks as Crimea and Sebastopol. Now that these territories have been reunited with Russia, it is clearly up to us to preserve the historic heritage that our country takes pride in, and rightly so." W/S Special cabinet meeting in Simferopol SOT, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev (in Russian): "We need to get banking and payments system up and running in Crimea within the shortest possible time. The initial elements have already been put in place, we just discussed that. The Bank of Russia has set up its local offices in the Republic of Crimea, and in Sebastopol. Now it can maintain the accounts of the regional and local budgets, extra-budgetary funds, and publicly funded institutions, which also means it can hand out pensions and benefits to local residents. But for Crimea to be fully integrated into the ruble zone, more steps will need to be taken. The peninsula has already been supplied with sufficient amounts of Russian paper money and coins. Banks have generally been enabled to service lending institutions using rubles. Now our number one task is to expand the network of Russian banks operating in Crimea." People displaced by recent crisis in Crimea arrive in Ukrainian capital

01:41
The Pushcha-Vodytsia sanatorium in Kiev is now a temporary home to some 160 people who fled Crimea when Russia annexed it earlier this month. They left behind their homes on the peninsula and have come to the Ukrainian capital to start a new life. For those without friends or family to fall back on, the government-run sanatorium in a northern suburb of Kiev is home for now. Their accommodation has been organised by Ukraine's Ministry of Social Policy as part of a wider programme to help those leaving Crimea. Support for the displaced people comes from a small army of volunteers. One man, who gave his name as Ivan, arrived in Kiev a week ago. He decided to leave Crimea as soon as he heard the result of the March 16 referendum on the peninsula's future. "We all hope we'll have a chance to go back to Crimea, Sevastopol in my case, but now we're looking for jobs, settling down and starting everything over from the very beginning," he told the Associated Press. Local people have been doing what they can to assist the newcomers, providing blankets, pillows, washing powder and other household items to help them settle in. Volodymyr Raskov is part of the community help group Pushcha Vodytsia. "We are getting huge support from local volunteers, they are constantly bringing things for the Crimeans here," he told the AP. Ukraine rejects Russian demands to pay for natural gas in advance

00:55
The gas row between Ukraine and Russia has once again escalated. Kiev has rejected demands to pay for its natural gas deliveries in advance. In a letter to the EU, Ukraine's Prime Minister says the issue of pre-payments cannot be part of its negotiations with Russia. Arseniy Yatsenyuk's comments come as Russia's gas giant Gazprom has told Kiev that it wants payments in advance over Ukraine's huge debt. Kiev has been warned that shipments will be stopped on June 3 if it fails to pay in advance for deliveries starting June. Ukraine refused to make the payments in protest at Russia's decision to nearly double the gas price. Charges were increased following the ouster of the pro-Kremlin government in Ukraine.
