This week on Counting the Cost we examine the commodities industry - the very essentials, the raw materials and resources that we simply cannot live without. These are traded all over the globe - everything from oil to copper, sugar to precious minerals. A country normally associated with great lakes, political neutrality and the Red Cross can now be associated with the global commodities industry as Switzerland is home to some of the biggest commodities companies in the world. But why has that one region out surpassed the others in the commodities business? And is it possible to regulate the globalised, multi-billion dollar companies which operate within it? At Al Jazeera English, we focus on people and events that affect people's lives. We bring topics to light that often go under-reported, listening to all sides of the story and giving a 'voice to the voiceless.' What is OIL-STORAGE TRADE? What does OIL-STORAGE TRADE mean? OIL-STORAGE TRADE meaning - OIL-STORAGE TRADE definition - OIL-STORAGE TRADE explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. The oil-storage trade, also referred to as contango, a market strategy in which large, often vertically-integrated oil companies purchase oil for immediate delivery and storage—when the price of oil is low— and hold it in storage until the price of oil increases. Investors bet on the future of oil prices through a financial instrument, oil futures in which they agree on a contract basis, to buy or sell oil at a set date in the future. Crude oil is stored in salt mines, tanks and oil tankers. Investors can choose to take profits or losses prior to the oil-delivery date arrives. Or they can leave the contract in place and physical oil is "delivered on the set date" to an "officially designated delivery point", in the United States, that is usually Cushing, Oklahoma. When delivery dates approach, they close out existing contracts and sell new ones for future delivery of the same oil. The oil never moves out of storage. If the forward market is in "contango"—the forward price is higher than the current spot price—the strategy is very successful. While new tanks have been added in Cushing for a storage capacity of 6.6 million barrels, by March 2015 all the tanks were fully leased through 2015. The strategy works because oil prices for delivery in the future are trading at a premium to those in the spot market - a market structure known in the industry as contango - with investors expecting prices to eventually recover from the near 60 percent slide in oil in the last seven months. —?Reuters 2015 In 2015, global capacity for oil storage was out-paced by global oil production and an oil glut occurred. Crude oil storage space became a tradable commodity with CME Group— which owns NYMEX— offering oil-storage futures contracts in March 2015. Traders and producers can buy and sell the right to store certain types of oil. The concept started to be used by the oil traders in the market in early 1990. But it was in 2007 through 2009 the oil storage trade expanded. Many participants—including Wall Street giants, such as Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, and Citicorp—turning sizeable profits simply by sitting on tanks of oil. By May, 2007 Cushing's inventory fell by nearly 35% as the oil-storage trade heated up. "The trend follows a spike in oil futures prices that has created incentives for traders to buy crude oil and oil products at current rates, sell them on futures markets and store them until delivery." —?Financial Post 2009 By the end of October 2009 one in twelve of the largest oil tankers were being used more for temporary storage of oil, rather than transportation. From June 2014 to January 2015, as the price of oil dropped 60 percent and the supply of oil remained high, the world's largest traders in crude oil purchased at least 25 million barrels to store in supertankers to make a profit in the future when prices rise. Trafigura, Vitol, Gunvor, Koch, Shell and other major energy companies began to book oil storage supertankers for up to 12 months. By 13 January 2015 At least 11 Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC) and Ultra Large Crude Carriers (ULCC)" have been reported as booked with storage options, rising from around five vessels at the end of last week. Each VLCC can hold 2 million barrels."

Hedging in commodities and how it works. http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/dealing-handbook.php PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE! How does hedging actually work? Commodity markets were originally invented to permit producers of commodities to hedge their exposure to the fluctuating price of a commodity. So if you have a consumer who was consuming a product no one really cares about him. It is the producer that needs to be looked after and protected. Granted the end consumer might have to pay a little bit more for his, say, cornflakes but that's not the end of the world. On the other hand if producers don't have any incentive to keep producing a commodity or if they're very vulnerable to price fluctuations in the commodity they might stop producing that commodity altogether. So futures exchange came about to allow producers to hedge their produce. Let's suppose a soybeans farmer expects to produce 500,000 bushels and her breakeven price is $10 per bushel. Now 1 Futures contract is equivalent to 5000 bushels The current price of soybeans for the expiry that she wants is $13 per bushel. If she wanted to lock that price of $13 per bushel she would sell (i.e. short) 100 futures contracts at $13. Some farmers are little bit more risk-seeking - they will try to time the market so they will become speculators in their own right.

Taking Delivery of Commodities via the Futures Market http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/dealing-handbook.php PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE! Physical Delivery vs. Cash Settlement of Commodity Futures Contracts. Taking delivery of commodities when you've traded them on a futures exchange. Do commodity futures actually get delivered? And could I take delivery on my futures contract? When you buy a futures contract, many of them when they expire, you are expected to take delivery of those futures (markets you've traded the futures on). So if you've bought a futures contract in soybeans you may well be expected to take delivery of those soybeans. After all that's what a futures contract is - it is the right to buy a certain amount of that commodity at a certain price at some point in the future. And the counterparty of your trade has to delivery that commodity at that price at a specified time in the future (which date both the buyer and seller have ultimately agreed). Most speculators don't want delivery of the futures contract so we close the futures contract before it expires and many broker accounts will automatically do that for us unless we actually notify them otherwise. A hedger can either be a producer or consumer - if you're a producer you want to lock the price that you will get when you sell what you've produced.

Learn how European and global oil markets are increasingly influenced by the U.S. crude oil supply chain: U.S. demand for oil has dropped to levels not seen since 1996, while domestic oil production has hit historic highs. This new U.S. supply/demand dynamic has staying power -- and comes at a time when global economic pressures have dramatically weighed on market sentiment towards Brent crude. In turn, this has caused unparalleled volatility for trading futures, spreads, and global arbitrage opportunities for many benchmark crudes. Genscape's proprietary monitors, including our MidContinent Pipeline Flow (PADD II) real-time data service, deliver increased transparency into the U.S. physical oil supply chain, enabling traders to stay one step ahead of that volatility while managing their positions more effectively.

Farmers use various tools to control the many risks in agriculture. Watching the weather influences when they plant or harvest. Buying crop insurance and selecting farm bill safety net programs helps protect them from crop devastation. But they can also manage some of the threat posed by volatile market prices by participating in the futures market. Farmers can get a feel for how that works if they play Commodity Classic, an online teaching tool that uses fictitious bushels of grain in a fake futures market. But here at Harvest Public Media, we wanted to better understand how the futures market helps both producers and users of a major commodity, such as corn. And how the benefits trickle down to regular food consumers. Here’s what we learned.

For more info: http://www.easymarkets.com/gtw/6288142.aspx The modern day world presents us with an environment which is overly noisy and congested. The international markets are often no different. However, like in life, if you can take the time to clear you head and focus to understand what traded instruments actual are and what drives them, then you can often see a clearer picture. This is often how I approach the markets. Hi my name is James; I would like you to join ME as I look into discovering the markets. Today’s subject, I will be focusing on one of the most traded commodities in the forex market and that is GOLD, with the hope that at the end of this video you will have a more of an understanding of the driving factors behind this yellow metal. Now, there is an old wall street saying, “Put 10% of your net worth into gold and hope it doesn’t go up”. As when gold flies, it often means things are going wrong elsewhere. However, though this saying really relates to the physical gold market, today we are looking at the GOLD spot market though this principle can also relate to the spot market, the spot market is in many ways very different. Gold spot is a trading instrument which you can trade practically 24 hours a day on the forex market. Unlike its physical counterpart where you have to purchase gold from a licenced distributor or licenced exchange and make arrangements for receiving and storing it and find either a buyer and seller; with spot you are simply speculating on the price movements, where if you get the direction right you can benefit from both buying and selling it. Now one of the first things, many market analysts will always say about gold, is that it is a safe haven. Now a safe haven is an investment that is expected to retain its value or increase its value during times of market uncertainty. With this in mind, the market often looks towards Gold when there is a lack in confidence in currencies and higher risk assets groups such as indices. Due to this, the market often tends to monitor the performance of indices (TXT ON SCREEN: S&P500, FTSE, the DAX, DJIA and the NIKKEI), as in the past if they have fallen, you could see GOLD prices rise and vice versa if these instruments have risen in value. Now though gold is traded against other major currencies, the key relationship has always been with the USD, which can be dated back to the Bretton Woods agreement established in 1944. Though this agreement was ended in 1971, you can often see the love and hate relationship between the two. Over the long term, a declining dollar has often meant a rise in gold prices. In the short term, this is not always true and though there is a special relationship between the USD and gold, gold is a global commodity and the price of the metal can often reflect the global sentiment, that’s why it has often shined for investors during times of both political unrest and conflict. But there is no doubt USD strength can play a major role in the value of gold so here are some key economic indicators from the US you have to keep in mind. US Initial Jobless claims Consumer Price Index US GDP FOMC announcements FED Base rate decisions US Non-Farm Payroll. Also another fundamental issue to bare in mind, is though we are talking about GOLD CFD’s, Gold is still a physical commodity and prices can be effected by supply and demand, so it’s often a good idea of being aware of the amount of supply coming from exporters of GOLD as well as the demand there is from the major central banks in the world. So in Final analysis, the key areas you need to be aware of when looking at gold is as follows: Global economic sentiment Performance of the stock market. Global political issues and conflict. The special relationship with the USD Key US Economic indicators. Supply and demand for Gold. Join me next time as I take a look at some key technical analysis behind GOLD as well as placing a trade. For now, thanks for watching and you trade safe.

Dark chocolate contains a group of antioxidants, known as polyphenols, as well as theobromine. Polyphenols: - Fight free radicals - Promote brain health - Reduce inflammation - Support normal blood sugar levels - Promote normal blood pressure 3) Sauerkraut- The word Sauerkraut means, “sour cabbage” in German and is cabbage that has been fermented in salt. Fermentation occurs when bacteria is deprived of oxygen and as a result of the fermentation process, sauerkraut has live and active probiotics that have beneficial effects on the health of your digestive system. Bacteria that are normally present in our intestines help digest food, destroy disease-causing microorganisms, and produce vitamins. Many of the microorganisms in probiotic products are the same as or similar to microorganisms that naturally live in our bodies. 4) Sardines- Sardines are a nutrient-rich fish widely consumed by humans and provide one of the highest sources of essential omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3’s offer many health benefits. In a separate study, American medical researchers reported that men who consumed fish once or more every week had a 50 percent lower risk of dying from a sudden cardiac event than do men who eat fish less than once a month. Also found to be efficient at reducing triglyceride levels as it reduces the enzyme activity that causes the liver to metabolize fat. 5) Broccolini- Broccolini, sometimes referred to as baby broccoli, is a vegetable that is a hybrid of broccoli and kale. It is part of the cruciferous vegetable family. Cruciferous vegetables are unique in that they are rich sources of glucosinolates, sulfur-containing compounds that impart a pungent aroma and spicy (some say bitter) taste. IC3 and DIM: Indole-3-Carbinol is a byproduct of glucosinolate and diindonylmethane is a byproduct of IC3. The sulfur-containing compounds, once broken down, help to form IC3, a phytonutrient that assists and helps the liver in the metabolism of estrogen. References: 1) What Is MCT Oil Really?
