John Sterman– From Climate Change to Political and Personal Change

01:00:01
The science is clear: the Earth is warming; human activity, particularly combustion of fossil fuels, is responsible; and climate change poses grave risks to our prosperity, our health and our lives. The historic Paris Climate Accord entered into force in November 2016, but in June 2017 the United States announced it intends to withdraw from the agreement. What is the future of global efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions? Will the Paris agreement unravel, or will other nations, along with states, cities and companies in the US, make up the difference? Can we build an economy powered by clean, renewable energy in time? We’ll explore these questions with an interactive simulation developed by MIT and ClimateInteractive.org. For complex, contentious issues like climate change, change happens when people learn for themselves. Professor Sterman will demonstrate how their interactive tools are being used by political leaders, policymakers, and members of the public around the world to build shared understanding of climate change and the task before us. Finally, we’ll discuss what can each we do, professionally and personally, to build a safer, sustainable world in which all can thrive. John D. Sterman is the Jay W. Forrester Professor of Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management and a Professor in the MIT Institute for Data, Systems, and Society. He is also the Director of the MIT System Dynamics Group and the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative. Sterman’s research centers on improving decision-making in complex systems, including corporate strategy and operations, energy policy, public health, environmental sustainability, and climate change. His work ranges from the dynamics of organizational change and the implementation of sustainable improvement programs to climate change and the implementation of policies to promote a sustainable world. Sterman pioneered the development of “management flight simulators” of corporate and economic systems which are now used by corporations, universities, and governments around the world. He is the author of many scholarly and popular articles on the challenges and opportunities facing organizations today, including the book, Modeling for Organizational Learning, and the award-winning textbook, Business Dynamics. Political change equals climate change for blacks

42:04
At some point we as black people have to break the yoke of the Democratic Party if we want to break the cycle of destruction we have been living under. It will take a political break, but we also need to create an economic system that gives us power to control our politicians and not the other way around. The black politician does nothing for us other than pay lip service because we are an economically weak people. Politicians ignore us because we lack that power. In spite of all of the discrimination from 1865-1965, blacks found a way to prosper. Since 1964 with all of the government help we somehow found a way to become permanent victims and regress. And before you get unhinged, the Republican Party is not the solution either. But why even talk about a party whom we never support? Just so you know, poor normally means black. Here is an article I just came across. I think it fits with this information I am sharing. http://savingourfuture.com/2015/06/might-disappointment-in-obama-lead-some-african-americans-to-discover-conservatism/2/

Separation of Powers and Checks and Balances: Crash Course Government and Politics #3

In which Craig Benzine teaches you about the US Governments Separation of powers and the system of checks and balances. In theory, the Legislative Branch, the Executive Branch, and the Judicial Brach are designed to keep each other in check, and to keep any branch from becoming too powerful. In reality, the system was designed to keep the president from becoming some kind of autocrat. For the most part, it has worked. Craig will call in the clones to explain which powers belong to which branches, and to reveal some secret perks that the Supreme Court justices enjoy. Are Your Political Beliefs Genetic?

05:09
The brain isn’t partisan, but when we move to political extremes, it can affect our physiology and psychology. The Genes of Left and Right: Our political attitudes may be written in our DNA https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-genes-of-left-and-right/ “The genes involved in such complex traits are difficult to pinpoint because they tend to be involved in a huge number of bodily and cognitive processes that each play a minuscule role in shaping our political attitudes. Yet a study published in 2015 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B managed to do just that, showing that genes encoding certain receptors for the neurotransmitter dopamine are associated with where we fall on the liberal-conservative axis.” Political Orientations Are Correlated with Brain Structure in Young Adults https://www.cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(11)00289-2 “We speculate that the association of gray matter volume of the amygdala and anterior cingulate cortex with political attitudes that we observed may reflect emotional and cognitive traits of individuals that influence their inclination to certain political orientations. For example, our findings are consistent with the proposal that political orientation is associated with psychological processes for managing fear and uncertainty.” The Myth of the Teen Brain https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-myth-of-the-teen-brain-2007-06/ “Considerable research shows that a persons emotions and behaviors continuously change brain anatomy and physiology. Stress creates hypersensitivity in dopamine-producing neurons that persists even after they are removed from the brain. Enriched environments produce more neuronal connections. For that matter, meditation, diet, exercise, studying and virtually all other activities alter the brain, and a new study shows that smoking produces brain changes similar to those produced in animals given heroin, cocaine or other addictive drugs. So if teens are in turmoil, we will necessarily find some corresponding chemical, electrical or anatomical properties in the brain. But did the brain cause the turmoil, or did the turmoil alter the brain?“ ____________________ Your brain is extremely complex and it influences the way you think and the choices that you make. POLITICAL THEORY - Karl Marx

09:28
Karl Marx remains deeply important today not as the man who told us what to replace capitalism with, but as someone who brilliantly pointed out certain of its problems. The School of Life, a pro-Capitalist institution, takes a look. For gifts and more from The School of Life, visit our online shop: https://goo.gl/O1tWri Download our App: https://goo.gl/kj9Vvr FURTHER READING “Most people agree that we need to improve our economic system somehow. It threatens our planet through excessive consumption, distracts us with irrelevant advertising, leaves people hungry and without healthcare, and fuels unnecessary wars. Yet we’re also often keen to dismiss the ideas of its most famous and ambitious critic, Karl Marx. This isn’t very surprising. In practice, his political and economic ideas have been used to design disastrously planned economies and nasty dictatorships. Frankly, the remedies Marx proposed for the ills of the world now sound a bit demented. He thought we should abolish private property. People should not be allowed to own things. At certain moments one can sympathise. But it’s like wanting to ban gossip or forbid watching television. It’s going to war with human behaviour. And Marx believed the world would be put to rights by a dictatorship of the proletariat; which does not mean anything much today. Openly Marxist parties received a total of only 1,685 votes in the 2010 UK general election, out of the nearly 40 million ballots cast…” You can read more on this and many other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org at this link: https://goo.gl/Rt3zri MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/93tGtZ Watch more films on POLITICAL THEORY in our playlist: http://bit.ly/2dma0Sn Do you speak a different language to English? Nigel Farage: Big political change is coming in Britain

03:30
Support: http://www.ukip.org/donations | http://www.ukipmeps.org | http://twitter.com/Nigel_Farage • European Parliament, Strasbourg, 23 October 2012 • Speaker: Nigel Farage MEP, Leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), Co-President of the 'Europe of Freedom and Democracy' (EFD) Group in the European Parliament - http://nigelfaragemep.co.uk • Debate: Conclusions of the European Council meeting of the 18-19 October 2012 - with statements by the European Council president Herman Van Rompoy and the Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso [2012/2640(RSP)] Transcript: Well, Mr Van Rompuy, when you first appeared here in what proved to be a rather expensive speech, I said you'd be the quiet assassin of nation state democracy. And sure enough, in your dull and technocratic way, you've gone about your course. But I have to say, you're even worse than I thought you were going to be. I thought it was just going to be a federal Europe - a federal union. But actually it appears with every statement you make that what you now want is the total subjugation of the states to completely undemocratic structures based in Brussels. I misread the bailouts. I thought that when the bailouts happened - and I could see the panic around this chamber, people fearing the economic meltdown. But you of course were calm through it all, because you saw the bailouts as your opportunity to take control. Just think how Ireland today is managed. Greece, for that matter. The sinister-sounding Troika [Commission-ECB-IMF] come in, 50 officials spend a few days in the country, investigate the situation and then tell puppet prime ministers what they may or may not do. And I note great enthusiasm in this chamber for Spain to have a bailout. Lots of members here want Spain to accept the bailout so that they too are subjugated to this new order. Indeed in Italy, the appointee there, Mr Monti, is very keen for his own country to be bailed out, because, to quote him, he fears that parliamentary democracy could bring down the European Union. So I think it's pretty clear that your next phase is for those who haven't been bailed out and may not need to be bailed out; you now want them to sign guarantees, budget guarantees, and to have the power to strike down national budgets after they have been through parliaments. I have to say, I feel that the eurozone is now in a very drk place, economically, socially, politically, and I fear that the countries trapped inside it - in that prison - will be there for many years to come. So it's odd against this backdrop that the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the European Union. It's true that Germany hasn't invaded France since 1945, but I don't think there was any prospect of that happening, unless of course what you're all saying is that the Germans are inherently bad people. No, the treath actually came from Russia, and we should be thanking NATO. And we should be thanking millions of American soldiers who served on European soil to maintain peace. Yet I don't hear a word of that because we loathe America and everything that it stands for. No, this is now a divided, split Europe, with neo-Nazi politics on the rise, with violent demonstrations in the streets. And I frankly think that the award of that Nobel Prize devalues that whole organisation. Well, it's not all bad news, because in Britain the opinion polls are clear that a clear majority of Brits now want to leave this Union, leaving David Cameron as piggy-in-the-middle, trying to pretend to be a Eurosceptic when he comes over here, going back home and claiming victories - but he's stuck. And I predict one thing: Big political change is coming in Britain because he's losing the support of millions of his own voters. .................................. • Video: EbS (European Parliament) .................................. • EU Member States: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, United Kingdom

These common efforts are found at the intra-community, regional and nation-state level, as well as in business, science and civil society. The networks address diverse policy fields such as education, economic development, search and rescue and coast guard cooperation. An important question now is how such cooperation arrangements are affected by tensions and conflicts outside the Arctic region. Where US Politics Came From: Crash Course US History #9

13:57
In which John Green teaches you where American politicians come from. In the beginning, soon after the US constitution was adopted, politics were pretty non-existent. George Washington was elected president with no opposition, everything was new and exciting, and everyone just got along. For several months. Then the contentious debate about the nature of the United States began, and it continues to this day. Washington and his lackey/handler Alexander Hamilton pursued an elitist program of federalism. They attempted to strengthen the central government, create a strong nation-state, and leave less of the governance to the states, They wanted to create debt, encourage manufacturing, and really modernize the new nation/ The opposition, creatively known as the anti-federalists, wanted to build some kind of agrarian pseudo-paradise where every (white) man could have his own farm, and live a free, self-reliant life. The founding father who epitomized this view was Thomas Jefferson. By the time Adams became president, the anti-federalists had gotten the memo about how alienating a name like anti-federalist can be. It's so much more appealing to voters if your party is for something rather than being defined by what you're against, you know? In any case, Jefferson and his acolytes changed their name to the Democratic-Republican Party, which covered a lot of bases, and proceeded to protest nearly everything Adams did. Lest you think this week is all boring politics, you'll be thrilled to hear this episode has a Whiskey Rebellion, a Quasi-War, anti-French sentiment, some controversial treaties, and something called the XYZ Affair, which sounds very exciting. Learn all about it this week with John Green. Hey teachers and students - Check out CommonLit's free collection of reading passages and curriculum resources to learn more about the events of this episode. Much of America's politics came from debates between democratic republican Thomas Jefferson and federalist Alexander Hamilton: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/alexander-hamilton While Jefferson would go on to become president, Hamilton heavily influenced President George Washington who set many American political ideals in his farewell address that Hamilton helped craft: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/washington-s-farewell-address Follow us! http://www.twitter.com/thecrashcourse http://www.twitter.com/realjohngreen http://www.twitter.com/crashcoursestan http://www.twitter.com/raoulmeyer http://www.twitter.com/saysdanica http://www.twitter.com/thoughtbubbler Turn on the captions. Nepal towards Political Changes, Elections and Development ||

09:46
Published Date: 27 Nov, 2017 .. Socio-psychological status was still under the influence of feudalism. Society was segmented into feudal and peasants. In national level feudal were Kings and their closely related ministers and high level bureaucrats. Whereas at local level, feudal were those who were relatives and keen of the local government authorities. His Majesty’s government was careful in appointing authorities to maintain the system. Nepal was suffering badly due its poor literacy rate. Majority of the population was illiterate only because of this socio-psychological situation. The education was rare, few had the chance to study and that was not enough to change the fate of Nepal. ... In 1960, King Mahendra used his emergency powers and took charge of the State once again. Political parties were outlawed and all prominent political figures, including the Prime Minister, were put behind bars. Civil liberties were curtailed and press freedom muzzled. King Mahendra, then, through an "exercise of the sovereign power and prerogatives inherent in us" promulgated a new constitution in December 1962 introducing a party-less Panchayat system. In November 1990, after the Jana Andolan movement, the new Constitution was adopted and the country became a constitutional monarchy. This constitution forced the monarchy of King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev to hand over decisions of government to the Nepali people....... Gyanendra took complete control, on 1st February 2005, he dismissed Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba's government for failing to make arrangements for parliamentary elections and being unable to restore peace in the country, which was then in the midst of a civil war led by Maoist insurgents.... On May 18, 2006 the Parliament unanimously voted to strip the King of many of his powers. May 29, 2008, a new constitution was voted on by the Nepalese Parliament, which declared that the monarchy would be deposed and a new parliamentary republic would become the Nepalese political framework. Constitution of Nepal 2015 is the present governing Constitution of Nepal. Nepal is governed according to the Constitution which came into effect on Sept 20, 2015, replacing the Interim Constitution of 2007.......... During the writing of this article, more than 3 million Nepali called to vote today for provincial & federal legislative elections. This ascertains important milestone to implement new constitution of Nepal. Right after the people’s movement in 2006, Dr. Chaitanya Mishra in his paper “Political Transition in Nepal: Toward an Analytical Framework” had written, A potentially momentous political transition has been underway in Nepal beginning April 2006. It is likely that the transition will mark a key political break with the past. He had added, “To the extent that monarchy renews itself, which appears unlikely, it will be rendered politically and militarily powerless, and undivided sovereign powers will finally be vested in the people and their representatives. It is also likely that the state and society in Nepal will become more democratic, inclusive and plural than in the past.”..... Many of Nepali people have seen the developed society and some of them have heard about it. They know every citizen in the country is as important as the leader. The thought and the behavior of every individual affect the speed and rate of the development. The tendency to seek the better life is the move towards the development of the society and whole nation. The level of effort applied by individual utilizing available resources towards the better life leads the nation to the development. Seeking logical explanation on everything rather by greed or self-interest, respect of labor, respect of individual regardless of his/her situation, freedom of speech, balancing of rights and duties, productive working mechanism, desire of better life, good family leads the whole society and the nation towards the development. Remote societies need special attention by their local leaders. ..... Nazis May Have Founded Sweden's Rising Political Party (HBO)

07:01
Sweden's far-right populists won their biggest ever share of the vote in Sunday's general elections, underlining how immigration has reshaped politics even in one of Europe’s most tolerant democracies. Although the Sweden Democrats largely set the agenda during the campaign, the far-right party made more modest gains than once feared, coming in third behind the two mainstream parties who are now scrambling to form the next government. But while the populists may consider their 17.6 percent disappointing, after earlier polls had predicted they would finish in at least second place, analysts say the nationalist surge represents an alarming change in Sweden’s political landscape. The populist party still won their largest ever share of the vote – up from 12.9 percent in 2014 – and successfully shifted both mainstream parties closer to their position on key issues of immigration, integration and identity. “The mainstream has certainly moved closer to their positions,” Matthew Goodwin, visiting senior fellow in the Europe programme at the Chatham House think tank told VICE News. Both the governing center-left Social Democrats and the center-right Moderates recorded among their worst results in modern history, with the rival blocs led by both parties left in virtually a dead heat. With nearly all votes counted Monday, the Social Democrats, together with their allies the Greens and the Left Party, had won 40.6 percent of the vote, while the opposition centre-right Alliance was on 40.3 percent. With overseas votes yet to be counted, the center-left bloc holds 144 seats, and the center-right 143. The country now faces weeks of uncertainty as both blocs engage in frantic horse-trading to try to form the next government. Both of the main blocs have said they will not work with the Sweden Democrats, a party with roots in fascism and neo-Nazism, as part of a tactic to isolate the group and its populist politics. The far-right party commanded strong polling numbers during the campaign as it hammered home its core issues of immigration, crime and integration to a voting public anxious over the arrival of 163,000 asylum seekers during the height of the migration crisis. But after surging to first-equal in polls in mid-July, support for the populists slackened in recent weeks, as other issues gained attention — including climate change, following a summer of record high temperatures and raging wildfires. Using Choice Blindness to Shift Political Attitudes and Voter Intentions

01:36
http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0060554 Hall L, Strandberg T, Pärnamets P, Lind A, Tärning B, et al. (2013) How the Polls Can Be Both Spot On and Dead Wrong: Using Choice Blindness to Shift Political Attitudes and Voter Intentions. PLoS ONE 8(4): e60554. doi:10.1371/journal.pone.0060554 Political candidates often believe they must focus their campaign efforts on a small number of swing voters open for ideological change. Based on the wisdom of opinion polls, this might seem like a good idea. But do most voters really hold their political attitudes so firmly that they are unreceptive to persuasion? We tested this premise during the most recent general election in Sweden, in which a left- and a right-wing coalition were locked in a close race. We asked our participants to state their voter intention, and presented them with a political survey of wedge issues between the two coalitions. Using a sleight-of-hand we then altered their replies to place them in the opposite political camp, and invited them to reason about their attitudes on the manipulated issues. Finally, we summarized their survey score, and asked for their voter intention again. The results showed that no more than 22% of the manipulated replies were detected, and that a full 92% of the participants accepted and endorsed our altered political survey score. Furthermore, the final voter intention question indicated that as many as 48% (69.2%) were willing to consider a left-right coalition shift. This can be contrasted with the established polls tracking the Swedish election, which registered maximally 10% voters open for a swing. Our results indicate that political attitudes and partisan divisions can be far more flexible than what is assumed by the polls, and that people can reason about the factual issues of the campaign with considerable openness to change. Taking Climate Change Seriously An analysis of op-ed articles in Spanish press

03:53
by Martí Domínguez, Íngrid Lafita, Anna Mateu Published in Public Understanding of Science, April 2016 In this article, we study the evolution of opinion genres regarding climate change in three Spanish newspapers (El País, El Mundo, and ABC). Analyzing the op-ed articles in these newspapers, we observe a significant change in the evolution of opinion. While denialism was very present in conservative press in 2007, 7 years later it is almost absent from El Mundo, and its presence in ABC is much lower and inactive: this shows that scientific consensus has prevailed over time and Spanish denialism has weakened, exclusively supported by political arguments by the most conservative parties.

Can political imagination bring about good change?

Faced with uncertainty, social division, and an unstable and potentially violent world, many fear a dark future. Might this stem not from accident but from a lack of a positive vision - with belief in progress and understanding undermined? Can we put current troubles down to a temporary blip? Or do we need a new grand vision to sustain and encourage us, and if so what is it? Laughably Biased or Fair & Balanced Climate Change Debate?

Climate Change, Decolonization, and Ways of Seeing

01:20:27
Jaskiran Dhillon, Tami Navarro, and Macarena Gómez-Barris in conversation on the politics and theory of climate change. Recorded at Verso Books in Brooklyn, September 13, 2018. Co-sponsored by Verso Books, Social Text, Science for the People, 350.org and Jacobin’s The Dig podcast. --- From Ecuador, Perú, Chile, Colombia, and Bolivia, Macarena Gómez-Barris’s book “The Extractive Zone: Social Ecologies and Decolonial Perspectives” describes “submerged perspectives,” the decolonial ways of knowing that unsettle colonial relationships to land and the forms of violence they reproduce. “The Extractive Zone” addresses five scenes of ruinous capitalism, theorizing how we can shift our perception towards political and social potential. To extend this conversation, a group of artists-activists-scholars addresses these questions: how can artistic, filmic, activist, and experimental approaches make visible the spaces of environmental and social ruin and the lasting imprint of multiple catastrophes upon our perception of social life? What forms of writing, activity, and making art in the interstices of life/death worlds allow us to differently inhabit viewpoints beyond the extractive view? --- ABOUT THE SPEAKERS Jaskiran Dhillon is a first generation academic and organizer who grew up on Treaty Six Cree and Metis Territory in Saskatchewan, Canada. Committed to the tenets of public intellectualism, Jaskiran’s scholarship is intimately connected to, and informed by, on-the-ground advocacy and direct action. Her first book, “Prairie Rising: Indigenous Youth, Decolonization, and the Politics of Intervention,” provides a critical, ethnographic account of state interventions in the lives of urban Indigenous youth. Her new research focuses on developing an anti-colonial critique of the environmental justice movement by examining Indigenous political movements working against the extractive industry, including the resistance at Standing Rock. Jaskiran is an associate professor of global studies and anthropology at The New School and a member of the New York City Stands with Standing Rock Collective. Tami Navarro is the associate director of the Barnard Center for Research on Women (BCRW), the founder of its Caribbean Feminisms on the Page literary series, and co-founder of the collective Critical Caribbean Feminisms (CCF), which seeks to center critical engagements with Caribbean diasporic projects. Her work has been published in Cultural Anthropology, American Anthropologist, Small Axe Salon, The Caribbean Writer, and The Global South. She is currently at work on a manuscript entitled “Virgin Capital: Financial Services as Development in the US Virgin Islands.” Macarena Gómez-Barris is chairperson of the Department of Social Science and Cultural Studies and the Global South Center at Pratt Institute. She is author of “The Extractive Zone: Social Ecologies and Decolonial Perspectives,” which theorizes social life through five extractive scenes of ruinous capitalism upon Indigenous territories. She is also author of the “Beyond the Pink Tide: Art and Political Undercurrents in the Américas,” “Where Memory Dwells: Culture and State Violence in Chile,” and co-editor, with Herman Gray, of “Towards a Sociology of a Trace.” She is the author of numerous articles and essays in art catalogues as well as peer reviewed journals, including writing on the work of Julie Mehretu, Laura Aguilar, Carolina Caycedo, Regina José Galindo, Cecilia Vicuña, Francisco Huichaqueo, and Patricio Guzmán. Macarena was a Fulbright fellow at the Sociology and Gender Department in FLACSO Ecuador, Quito.

What is POLITICAL ECOLOGY? What does POLITICAL ECOLOGY mean? POLITICAL ECOLOGY meaning

04:37
What is POLITICAL ECOLOGY? What does POLITICAL ECOLOGY mean? POLITICAL ECOLOGY meaning - POLITICAL ECOLOGY definition - POLITICAL ECOLOGY explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Political ecology is the study of the relationships between political, economic and social factors with environmental issues and changes. Political ecology differs from apolitical ecological studies by politicizing environmental issues and phenomena. The academic discipline offers wide-ranging studies integrating ecological social sciences with political economy in topics such as degradation and marginalization, environmental conflict, conservation and control, and environmental identities and social movements. The term "political ecology" was first coined by Frank Thone in an article published in 1935. It has been widely used since then in the context of human geography and human ecology, but with no systematic definition. Anthropologist Eric R. Wolf gave it a second life in 1972 in an article entitled "Ownership and Political Ecology," in which he discusses how local rules of ownership and inheritance "mediate between the pressures emanating from the larger society and the exigencies of the local ecosystem", but did not develop the concept further Other origins include other early works of Wolf as well as John W. Cole at the University of Massachusetts, Hans Magnus Enzensberger and others in the 1970s and 1980s. The origins of the field in the 1970s and 1980s were a result of the development of development geography and cultural ecology., particularly the work of Piers Blaikie on the sociopolitical origins of soil erosion. Historically, political ecology has focused on phenomena in and affecting the developing world; since the field’s inception, "research has sought primarily to understand the political dynamics surrounding material and discursive struggles over the environment in the third world". Scholars in political ecology are drawn from a variety of academic disciplines, including geography, anthropology, development studies, political science, sociology, forestry, and environmental history. Political ecology’s broad scope and interdisciplinary nature lends itself to multiple definitions and understandings. However, common assumptions across the field give the term relevance. Raymond L. Bryant and Sinéad Bailey developed three fundamental assumptions in practicing political ecology: First, costs and benefits associated with environmental change are distributed unequally. Changes in the environment do not affect society in a homogenous way: political, social, and economic differences account for uneven distribution of costs and benefits. Second, this unequal distribution inevitably reinforces or reduces existing social and economic inequalities - "any change in environmental conditions must affect the political and economic status quo." Third, the unequal distribution of costs and benefits and the reinforcing or reducing of pre-existing inequalities has political implications in terms of the altered power relationships that then result. In addition, political ecology attempts to provide critiques and alternatives in the interplay of the environment and political, economic and social factors. Paul Robbins asserts that the discipline has a "normative understanding that there are very likely better, less coercive, less exploitative, and more sustainable ways of doing things". From these assumptions, political ecology can be used to: - inform policymakers and organizations of the complexities surrounding environment and development, thereby contributing to better environmental governance. - understand the decisions that communities make about the natural environment in the context of their political environment, economic pressure, and societal regulations - look at how unequal relations in and among societies affect the natural environment, especially in context of government policy.
