Political Parties: Crash Course Government and Politics #40
Today, Craig is going to talk about political parties and their role in American politics. So, when most people think about political parties they associate them with the common ideologies of the voters and representatives within that party, but the goal of a party is NOT to influence policies. The role of political parties is much simpler: to win control of the government. So today, we’re going got talk about why we have political parties in the first place and then finish with the five functions they use in reaching that goal. It’s a lot to cover, so next week we’ll talk about what each political party stands for and how that has changed historically. What does POLITICAL GLOBALIZATION mean? POLITICAL GLOBALIZATION meaning - POLITICAL GLOBALIZATION definition - POLITICAL GLOBALIZATION explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Political globalization refers to the growth of the worldwide political system, both in size and complexity. That system includes national governments, their governmental and intergovernmental organizations as well as government-independent elements of global civil society such as international non-governmental organizations and social movement organizations. One of the key aspects of the political globalization is the declining importance of the nation-state and the rise of other actors on the political scene. The creation and existence of the United Nations has been called one of the classic examples of political globalization. Political globalization is one of the three main dimensions of globalization commonly found in academic literature, with the two other being economic globalization and cultural globalization. William R. Thompson has defined it as "the expansion of a global political system, and its institutions, in which inter-regional transactions (including, but certainly not limited to trade) are managed". Valentine M. Moghadam defined it as "an increasing trend toward multilateralism (in which the United Nations plays a key role), toward an emerging 'transnational state apparatus,' and toward the emergence of national and international nongovernmental organizations that act as watchdogs over governments and have increased their activities and influence". Manfred B. Steger in turn wrote that it "refers to the intensification and expansion of political interrelations across the globe". The longer definition by Colin Crouch goes as follows: "Political globalization refers to the growing power of institutions of global governance such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Trade Organization (WTO). But it also refers to the spread and influence of international non-governmental organizations, social movement organizations and transnational advocacy networks operating across borders and constituting a kind of global civil society." Finally, Gerard Delanty and Chris Rumford define it as "a tension between three processes which interact to produce the complex field of global politics: global geopolitics, global normative culture and polycentric networks." Salvatore Babones discussing sources used by scholars for studying political globalizations noted the usefulness of Europa World Year Book for data on diplomatic relationships between countries, publications of International Institute for Strategic Studies such as The Military Balance for matters of military, and US government publication Patterns of Global Terrorism for matters of terrorism. Political globalization is measured by aggregating and weighting data on the number of embassies and high commissioners in a country, the number of the country's membership in international organization, its participation in the UN peacekeeping missions, and the number of international treaties signed by said country. This measure has been used by Axel Dreher, Noel Gaston, Pim Martens Jeffrey Haynes and is available from the KOF institute at ETH Zurich Like globalization itself, political globalization has several dimensions and lends itself to a number of interpretations. It has been discussed in the context of new emancipatory possibilities, as well as in the context of loss of autonomy and fragmentation of the social world. Political globalization can be seen in changes such as democratization of the world, creation of the global civil society, and moving beyond the centrality of the nation-state, particularly as the sole actor in the field of politics. Some of the questions central to the discussion of the political globalization are related to the future of the nation-state, whether its importance is diminishing and what are the causes for those changes; and understanding the emergence of the concept of global governance. The creation and existence of the United Nations has been called one of the classic examples of political globalization. Political actions by non-governmental organizations and social movements, concerned about various topics such as environmental protection, is another example. David Held has proposed that continuing political globalization may lead to the creation of a world government-like cosmopolitan democracy, through this vision has also been criticized as too idealistic.

John Sterman– From Climate Change to Political and Personal Change
The science is clear: the Earth is warming; human activity, particularly combustion of fossil fuels, is responsible; and climate change poses grave risks to our prosperity, our health and our lives. The historic Paris Climate Accord entered into force in November 2016, but in June 2017 the United States announced it intends to withdraw from the agreement. What is the future of global efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions? Will the Paris agreement unravel, or will other nations, along with states, cities and companies in the US, make up the difference? Can we build an economy powered by clean, renewable energy in time? We’ll explore these questions with an interactive simulation developed by MIT and ClimateInteractive.org. For complex, contentious issues like climate change, change happens when people learn for themselves. Professor Sterman will demonstrate how their interactive tools are being used by political leaders, policymakers, and members of the public around the world to build shared understanding of climate change and the task before us. Finally, we’ll discuss what can each we do, professionally and personally, to build a safer, sustainable world in which all can thrive. John D. Sterman is the Jay W. Forrester Professor of Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management and a Professor in the MIT Institute for Data, Systems, and Society. He is also the Director of the MIT System Dynamics Group and the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative. Sterman’s research centers on improving decision-making in complex systems, including corporate strategy and operations, energy policy, public health, environmental sustainability, and climate change. His work ranges from the dynamics of organizational change and the implementation of sustainable improvement programs to climate change and the implementation of policies to promote a sustainable world. Sterman pioneered the development of “management flight simulators” of corporate and economic systems which are now used by corporations, universities, and governments around the world. He is the author of many scholarly and popular articles on the challenges and opportunities facing organizations today, including the book, Modeling for Organizational Learning, and the award-winning textbook, Business Dynamics. Nepal towards Political Changes, Elections and Development ||
Published Date: 27 Nov, 2017 .. Socio-psychological status was still under the influence of feudalism. Society was segmented into feudal and peasants. In national level feudal were Kings and their closely related ministers and high level bureaucrats. Whereas at local level, feudal were those who were relatives and keen of the local government authorities. His Majesty’s government was careful in appointing authorities to maintain the system. Nepal was suffering badly due its poor literacy rate. Majority of the population was illiterate only because of this socio-psychological situation. The education was rare, few had the chance to study and that was not enough to change the fate of Nepal. ... In 1960, King Mahendra used his emergency powers and took charge of the State once again. Political parties were outlawed and all prominent political figures, including the Prime Minister, were put behind bars. Civil liberties were curtailed and press freedom muzzled. King Mahendra, then, through an "exercise of the sovereign power and prerogatives inherent in us" promulgated a new constitution in December 1962 introducing a party-less Panchayat system. In November 1990, after the Jana Andolan movement, the new Constitution was adopted and the country became a constitutional monarchy. This constitution forced the monarchy of King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev to hand over decisions of government to the Nepali people....... Gyanendra took complete control, on 1st February 2005, he dismissed Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba's government for failing to make arrangements for parliamentary elections and being unable to restore peace in the country, which was then in the midst of a civil war led by Maoist insurgents.... On May 18, 2006 the Parliament unanimously voted to strip the King of many of his powers. May 29, 2008, a new constitution was voted on by the Nepalese Parliament, which declared that the monarchy would be deposed and a new parliamentary republic would become the Nepalese political framework. Constitution of Nepal 2015 is the present governing Constitution of Nepal. Nepal is governed according to the Constitution which came into effect on Sept 20, 2015, replacing the Interim Constitution of 2007.......... During the writing of this article, more than 3 million Nepali called to vote today for provincial & federal legislative elections. This ascertains important milestone to implement new constitution of Nepal. Right after the people’s movement in 2006, Dr. Chaitanya Mishra in his paper “Political Transition in Nepal: Toward an Analytical Framework” had written, A potentially momentous political transition has been underway in Nepal beginning April 2006. It is likely that the transition will mark a key political break with the past. He had added, “To the extent that monarchy renews itself, which appears unlikely, it will be rendered politically and militarily powerless, and undivided sovereign powers will finally be vested in the people and their representatives. It is also likely that the state and society in Nepal will become more democratic, inclusive and plural than in the past.”..... Many of Nepali people have seen the developed society and some of them have heard about it. They know every citizen in the country is as important as the leader. The thought and the behavior of every individual affect the speed and rate of the development. The tendency to seek the better life is the move towards the development of the society and whole nation. The level of effort applied by individual utilizing available resources towards the better life leads the nation to the development. Seeking logical explanation on everything rather by greed or self-interest, respect of labor, respect of individual regardless of his/her situation, freedom of speech, balancing of rights and duties, productive working mechanism, desire of better life, good family leads the whole society and the nation towards the development. Remote societies need special attention by their local leaders. ..... Will Sudanese Political Upheaval Bring Positive Change?

Will it lead to positive, democratic change or more of the same as al-Bashir? South Sudan-based journalist Patrick Oyet and our Mohammad Al-Kassim analyze. Story: Sudan's army has ousted veteran president Omar al-Bashir, but protesters against his iron-fisted rule denounced a "coup" and thousands rallied outside army headquarters as a night-time curfew kicked in. In a somber televised address on Thursday, Defense Minister Awad Ibnouf announced "the toppling of the regime" and said Bashir had been detained in 'a secure place', bringing an end to his three decades in power. Thousands of protesters were staging a sit-in for the sixth night running outside Khartoum army headquarters as the military council's curfew began at 10:00 pm (2000 GMT) despite growing international pressure to hand over to civilian rule. The army had earlier warned protesters not to defy the curfew. 'Stay put and guard your revolution,' said protest organizers in a rallying call urging residents to remain at the Army compound as the curfew neared. Washington said Khartoum should "exercise restraint and to allow space for civilian participation within the government". 'The Sudanese people should determine who leads them and their future and the Sudanese people have been clear and are demanding a civilian-led transition,' State Department spokesman Robert Palladino told reporters. The European Union urged the army to carry out a "swift" handover to civilian rule. Ibnouf said a transitional military council would replace the president for two years, adding that the country's borders and airspace were shut until further notice. State television later broadcast footage of him taking the oath to become head of the council, alongside his new deputy, army chief of staff Lieutenant General Kamal Abdelmarouf. Bashir, who swept to power in a 1989 coup, was one of Africa's longest-serving presidents and is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) on charges of genocide and war crimes. Organizers of the protests that have rocked Sudan since December vowed to press on until the whole regime was swept aside. The protesters' Alliance for Freedom and Change said the regime had kept 'the same faces', and urged demonstrators "to continue their sit-in in front of army headquarters and across all regions and in the streets". Alaa Salah, who has become an icon of the protest movement after a video of her leading demonstrators' chants went viral, said that 'change will not happen with Bashir's entire regime hoodwinking Sudanese civilians through a military coup'. Thursday's announcement meant 'we have not achieved anything', said Adel, a protester outside the army headquarters, where defiant demonstrators have braved tear gas and gunfire to keep up the sit-in. 'We will not stop our revolution. We are calling for the regime to step down, not only Bashir,' he said.

Are Your Political Beliefs Genetic?
The brain isn’t partisan, but when we move to political extremes, it can affect our physiology and psychology. The Genes of Left and Right: Our political attitudes may be written in our DNA https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-genes-of-left-and-right/ “The genes involved in such complex traits are difficult to pinpoint because they tend to be involved in a huge number of bodily and cognitive processes that each play a minuscule role in shaping our political attitudes. Yet a study published in 2015 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B managed to do just that, showing that genes encoding certain receptors for the neurotransmitter dopamine are associated with where we fall on the liberal-conservative axis.” Political Orientations Are Correlated with Brain Structure in Young Adults https://www.cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(11)00289-2 “We speculate that the association of gray matter volume of the amygdala and anterior cingulate cortex with political attitudes that we observed may reflect emotional and cognitive traits of individuals that influence their inclination to certain political orientations. For example, our findings are consistent with the proposal that political orientation is associated with psychological processes for managing fear and uncertainty.” The Myth of the Teen Brain https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-myth-of-the-teen-brain-2007-06/ “Considerable research shows that a persons emotions and behaviors continuously change brain anatomy and physiology. Stress creates hypersensitivity in dopamine-producing neurons that persists even after they are removed from the brain. Enriched environments produce more neuronal connections. For that matter, meditation, diet, exercise, studying and virtually all other activities alter the brain, and a new study shows that smoking produces brain changes similar to those produced in animals given heroin, cocaine or other addictive drugs. So if teens are in turmoil, we will necessarily find some corresponding chemical, electrical or anatomical properties in the brain. But did the brain cause the turmoil, or did the turmoil alter the brain?“ ____________________ Your brain is extremely complex and it influences the way you think and the choices that you make. In 2015, the far-right Law and Justice party, or PiS, won both the presidential election and a slim parliamentary majority. Since then, they’ve been working to cement their power by firing judges, purging the military and civil service, and cracking down on protesters and the media. All of this has put the country on a collision course with the European Union that could threaten Europe’s hard-won peace and prosperity following centuries of conflict. जापान का संविधान Japan ka samvidhan/Constitution:-BA 2nd year political science paper-1st [Hindi]
The Meiji Constitution was the fundamental law of the Empire of Japan, propagated during the reign of Emperor Meiji (r. 1867–1912). It provided for a form of mixed constitutionaland absolute monarchy, based on thePrussian and British models. In theory, theEmperor of Japan was the supreme ruler, and the cabinet, whose prime minister was elected by a privy council, were his followers; in practice, the Emperor was head of state but the Prime Minister was the actual head of government. Under the Meiji Constitution, the prime minister and his cabinet were not necessarily chosen from the elected members of the Diet. Pursuing the regular amending procedure of the "Meiji Constitution", it was entirely revised to become the "Post-war Constitution" on 3 November 1946. The Post-war Constitution has been in force since 3 May 1947. The Potsdam DeclarationEdit On 26 July 1945, Allied leaders Winston Churchill, Harry S. Truman, and Chiang Kai-shek issued the Potsdam Declaration, which demanded Japan's unconditional surrender. This declaration also defined the major goals of the post-surrender Allied occupation: "The Japanese government shall remove all obstacles to the revival and strengthening of democratic tendencies among the Japanese people. Freedom of speech, of religion, and of thought, as well as respect for the fundamental human rights shall be established" (Section 10). In addition, the document stated: "The occupying forces of the Allies shall be withdrawn from Japan as soon as these objectives have been accomplished and there has been established in accordance with the freely expressed will of the Japanese people a peacefully inclined and responsible government" (Section 12). The Allies sought not merely punishment or reparations from a militaristic foe, but fundamental changes in the nature of its political system. In the words of political scientist Robert E. Ward: "The occupation was perhaps the single most exhaustively planned operation of massive and externally directed political change in world history." https://youtu.be/5KAq4GB6FlA https://youtu.be/Ngz6wFPtKvI https://youtu.be/s0oqwpADAmA

The collapse of Venezuela, explained
Venezuela is in chaos. How did we get here? Correction at 1:58: The Supreme Court tried to strip the country’s National Assembly of its powers in March 2017 and not 2016. We regret the error. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Venezuela was once the richest country in Latin America. It has the largest known oil reserves in the world and its democratic government was once praised world wide. But today, Venezuela’s democratic institutions and its economy are in shambles. The country has the highest inflation in the world, making food and medicine inaccessible to most Venezuelans. Over the last four years, its GDP has fallen 35%, which is a sharper drop than the one seen during the Great Depression in the US. The country’s murder rate has surpassed that of the most dangerous cities in the world. These conditions have sparked months of protests against the president, Nicolas Maduro. And it’s easy to see why: the country has become measurably worse since his election in 2013. Karl Marx remains deeply important today not as the man who told us what to replace capitalism with, but as someone who brilliantly pointed out certain of its problems. The School of Life, a pro-Capitalist institution, takes a look. For gifts and more from The School of Life, visit our online shop: https://goo.gl/O1tWri Download our App: https://goo.gl/kj9Vvr FURTHER READING “Most people agree that we need to improve our economic system somehow. It threatens our planet through excessive consumption, distracts us with irrelevant advertising, leaves people hungry and without healthcare, and fuels unnecessary wars. Yet we’re also often keen to dismiss the ideas of its most famous and ambitious critic, Karl Marx. This isn’t very surprising. In practice, his political and economic ideas have been used to design disastrously planned economies and nasty dictatorships. Frankly, the remedies Marx proposed for the ills of the world now sound a bit demented. He thought we should abolish private property. People should not be allowed to own things. At certain moments one can sympathise. But it’s like wanting to ban gossip or forbid watching television. It’s going to war with human behaviour. And Marx believed the world would be put to rights by a dictatorship of the proletariat; which does not mean anything much today. Openly Marxist parties received a total of only 1,685 votes in the 2010 UK general election, out of the nearly 40 million ballots cast…” You can read more on this and many other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org at this link: https://goo.gl/Rt3zri MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/93tGtZ Watch more films on POLITICAL THEORY in our playlist: http://bit.ly/2dma0Sn Do you speak a different language to English? Bernie Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez are obviously demagogues,” Carlson said of the 2020 presidential candidate and first-term congresswoman. “They don’t mean half of what they say. The other half they don’t really understand. They’re not impressive. But on this one issue, they are absolutely, indisputably right.” Hosts: Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian Cast: Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian *** The Largest Online News Show in the World. What is POLITICAL ECOLOGY? What does POLITICAL ECOLOGY mean? POLITICAL ECOLOGY meaning - POLITICAL ECOLOGY definition - POLITICAL ECOLOGY explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Political ecology is the study of the relationships between political, economic and social factors with environmental issues and changes. Political ecology differs from apolitical ecological studies by politicizing environmental issues and phenomena. The academic discipline offers wide-ranging studies integrating ecological social sciences with political economy in topics such as degradation and marginalization, environmental conflict, conservation and control, and environmental identities and social movements. The term "political ecology" was first coined by Frank Thone in an article published in 1935. It has been widely used since then in the context of human geography and human ecology, but with no systematic definition. Anthropologist Eric R. Wolf gave it a second life in 1972 in an article entitled "Ownership and Political Ecology," in which he discusses how local rules of ownership and inheritance "mediate between the pressures emanating from the larger society and the exigencies of the local ecosystem", but did not develop the concept further Other origins include other early works of Wolf as well as John W. Cole at the University of Massachusetts, Hans Magnus Enzensberger and others in the 1970s and 1980s. The origins of the field in the 1970s and 1980s were a result of the development of development geography and cultural ecology., particularly the work of Piers Blaikie on the sociopolitical origins of soil erosion. Historically, political ecology has focused on phenomena in and affecting the developing world; since the field’s inception, "research has sought primarily to understand the political dynamics surrounding material and discursive struggles over the environment in the third world". Scholars in political ecology are drawn from a variety of academic disciplines, including geography, anthropology, development studies, political science, sociology, forestry, and environmental history. Political ecology’s broad scope and interdisciplinary nature lends itself to multiple definitions and understandings. However, common assumptions across the field give the term relevance. Raymond L. Bryant and Sinéad Bailey developed three fundamental assumptions in practicing political ecology: First, costs and benefits associated with environmental change are distributed unequally. Changes in the environment do not affect society in a homogenous way: political, social, and economic differences account for uneven distribution of costs and benefits. Second, this unequal distribution inevitably reinforces or reduces existing social and economic inequalities - "any change in environmental conditions must affect the political and economic status quo." Third, the unequal distribution of costs and benefits and the reinforcing or reducing of pre-existing inequalities has political implications in terms of the altered power relationships that then result. In addition, political ecology attempts to provide critiques and alternatives in the interplay of the environment and political, economic and social factors. Paul Robbins asserts that the discipline has a "normative understanding that there are very likely better, less coercive, less exploitative, and more sustainable ways of doing things". From these assumptions, political ecology can be used to: - inform policymakers and organizations of the complexities surrounding environment and development, thereby contributing to better environmental governance. - understand the decisions that communities make about the natural environment in the context of their political environment, economic pressure, and societal regulations - look at how unequal relations in and among societies affect the natural environment, especially in context of government policy.

In normal times, when Labour does badly, the Tories mop up the votes and when the Tories falter, the Labour party is the beneficiary. But today they are both falling in the polls and in the case of the Tories it is more of a power dive than just a free-fall. Right now, the latest EU election voting intentions poll from YouGov puts The Brexit Party rising to 35%, The Lib Dems trailing in second place with just 16%, Labour dropping to third place with 15%, the Greens in fourth on ten percent, the Tories in fifth on 9%, Change UK on 5% and UKIP on 3%. According to the poll, 62% of Tories who voted Conservative at the last general election in 2017, will vote for the Nigel Farage Brexit Party. While on the Labour side 35% will vote for The Brexit Party. And when looking at those 2017 Conservative voters who voted to leave the EU in 2016, 78% will be voting for The Brexit Party and on the Labour side 47% of 2017 Labour voters who voted to leave in 2016, will also be voting for The Brexit Party. Under the D'Hondt system of allocating seats, if replicated across the nation, this would give The Brexit Party the first two seats in every region bar Northern Ireland where they are not actually standing a candidate. And now that Theresa May's fate has all but been sealed, the talks between the Tories and Labour have ground to a halt without an agreement being reached - no surprise there then. So all eyes will be on those that come forward over the next days and weeks to take her place in Number Ten. And until that vacancy has been filled, Brexit will be on hold, on both sides of the House of Commons, which will leave a clear field for Nigel Farage to wreak havoc with his Brexit Party next week. Although we'll get a good idea of the thinking amongst the front runners in the run up to any Tory party leadership election, it will only be when they get into post that any changes in Brexit policy will start to become apparent. And much of that will hinge on the reception their appointment gets from Brussels and the EU27 leaders. Will whoever takes over, end up just trying to rehash the Withdrawal Agreement? Or will they try and restart the whole exit procedure requiring a huge Article 50 extension in the process? Or will they do the sensible thing and pull the plug on the EU immediately and take the country out on WTO terms? I would guess, that those wanting a PM with firm Brexit views as well as one prepared to take the decisive leave decision that this country needs so much, will find themselves disappointed. And Labour's fence sitting in an attempt to not only give the Tories enough rope to hang Theresa May by, but to also try and play to both sides of the Brexit divide, has definitely not paid off. As indicated by the party's polling figures. In fact, if Labour does not make hay while the Tory sun don't shine, could Corbyn be for the chop too? The end result of all of this is that a party that wants to do what the electorate voted for is winning massive support, and those that do not are losing support hand over fist. Now, there's a message there, if I could just put my finger on it. All that our parliament has achieved since the Referendum in 2016, is to show the world how not to operate a democracy and how to bring the entire government and parliamentary system to a complete halt - And it's the people in it that are at fault! #Brexit #TheBrexitParty #NigelFarage Sources: https://yougov.co.uk/topics/politics/articles-reports/2019/05/17/labour-and-tories-lose-majority-support-brexit-pro https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-48303811 https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/may/16/labour-brexit-party-european-elections-nigel-farage

bell hooks + Jill Soloway - Ending Domination: The Personal is Political I The New School
The early feminist movement was dedicated to the proposition that the personal is political—an insight that has come to be increasingly mocked and ridiculed. In their careers, renowned scholar, poet, and author bell hooks and Emmy-winning television writer and creator of Transparent Jill Soloway have countered this trend, making strong use of the autobiographical to generate critical discourse and awareness of injustice. In this conversation, hooks and Soloway discuss their excavations of the personal and its politics, and how this search strengthens liberation efforts rather than diminish them. About the speakers: For more than three decades, bell hooks (née Gloria Watkins) has been recognized internationally as a scholar, poet, author, and radical thinker. The dozens of books and articles she has published span several genres, including cultural and political analyses and critiques, personal memoirs, poetry collections, and children's books. Her writings cover topics of gender, race, class, spirituality, teaching, and the significance of media in contemporary culture. Jill Soloway is an American comedian, playwright, feminist, Emmy-winning television writer, and award-winning director known for creating, writing, executive producing, and directing the Amazon original series Transparent. Article 35A: Political Turmoil In Jammu And Kashmir
Click Here For Latest Political News & Updates ►http://bit.ly/2uhxJgc Away from the attention that Article 370 usually invites, a section of BJP sympathisers are steadily pushing the party's less-noticed promise of altering Article 35A of the Constitution, which empowers the J&K government to define "permanent residents" of the state. The article enables the state to provide special rights and privileges that permanent residents can enjoy but has been criticised by BJP as a provision that encourages alienation, deepens the concept of a separate identity and creates a political gap between J&K and the rest of India. Jordan Peterson: The fatal flaw in leftist American politics
What is political extremism? Professor of psychology Jordan Peterson points out that America knows what right-wing radicalism looks like: The doctrine of racial superiority is where conservatives have drawn the line. "What’s interesting is that on the conservative side of the spectrum we’ve figured out how to box-in the radicals and say, 'No, you’re outside the domain of acceptable opinion,'" says Peterson. But where's that line for the Left? There is no universal marker of what extreme liberalism looks like, which is devastating to the ideology itself but also to political discourse as a whole. Fortunately, Peterson is happy to suggest such a marker: "The doctrine of equality of outcome. It seems to me that that’s where people who are thoughtful on the Left should draw the line, and say no. Equality of opportunity? [That's] not only fair enough, but laudable. But equality of outcome…? It’s like: 'No, you’ve crossed the line. We’re not going there with you.'" Peterson argues that it's the ethical responsibility of left-leaning people to identify liberal extremism and distinguish themselves from it the same way conservatives distance themselves from the doctrine of racial superiority. Failing to recognize such extremism may be liberalism's fatal flaw. Jordan Peterson is the author of 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos Read more at BigThink.com: http://bigthink.com/videos/jordan-peterson-the-fatal-flaw-lurking-in-american-leftist-politics Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript: I would like to talk briefly about depolarization on the Left and the Right, because I think there’s a technical problem that needs to be addressed. So here’s what I’ve been thinking about. It’s been obvious to me for some time that, for some reason, the fundamental claim of post-modernism is something like an infinite number of interpretations and no canonical overarching narrative. Okay, but the problem with that is: okay, now what? No narrative, no value structure that is canonically overarching, so what the hell are you going to do with yourself? How are you going to orient yourself in the world? Well, the post-modernists have no answer to that. So what happens is they default—without any real attempt to grapple with the cognitive dissonance—they default to this kind of loose, egalitarian Marxism. And if they were concerned with coherence that would be a problem, but since they’re not concerned with coherence it doesn’t seem to be a problem. But the force that’s driving the activism is mostly the Marxism rather than the post-modernism. It’s more like an intellectual gloss to hide the fact that a discredited economic theory is being used to fuel an educational movement and to produce activists. But there’s no coherence to it. It’s not like I’m making this up, you know. Derrida himself regarded—and Foucault as well—they were barely repentant Marxists. They were part of the student revolutions in France in the 1960s, and what happened to them, essentially—and what happened to Jean-Paul Sartre for that matter—was that by the end of the 1960s you couldn’t be conscious and thinking and pro-Marxist. There’s so much evidence that had come pouring in from the former Soviet Union, from the Soviet Union at that point, and from Maoist China, of the absolutely devastating consequences of the doctrine that it was impossible to be apologetic for it by that point in time. So the French intellectuals in particular just pulled off a sleight of hand and transformed Marxism into post-modern identity politics. And we’ve seen the consequence of that. It’s not good. It’s a devolution into a kind of tribalism that will tear us apart on the Left and on the Right. In my house, I have a very large collection of socialist, realist paintings from the former Soviet Union—propaganda pieces, but also kind of harsh impressionist pieces of working-class people and so forth—and I collected them for a variety of reasons. Now you could debate about the propriety of that given the murderousness of those regimes. And fair enough, I have my reasons. But I don’t have paintings from the Nazi era in my house, and I wouldn’t. And that’s been a puzzlement to me because I regard the communists, the totalitarian communist regimes, as just as murderous as the Nazi regimes. But there’s an evil associated with the Nazi regime that seems more palpable in some sense. So I’ve been thinking about that for a long time. And then I’ve been thinking about a corollary to that, which is part of the problem with our current political debate. On the Right, I think we’ve identified markers for people who have gone too far in their ideological presuppositions. And it looks to me like the marker we’ve identified is racial superiority.

Open Political Systems
Take the full course: https://systemsacademy.io/courses/political-complexity/ https://twitter.com/systemsacademy The term open political system refers to political systems that have the characteristics of open systems in general; namely that they have a high degree of exchange with their environment and are normalized to respond to changes through feedback and adaptive capacity. Likewise, they are open in the sense of being able to include the distributed perspectives and interests of a wide section of the population into the decision-making process. Open political systems are dynamic in nature in recognizing the need to be responsive to changes within the external environment and to adapt to those changes. The open–closed political spectrum has become in recent years identified as a replacement to the traditional left-right spectrum to define the most important features to political systems in the age of globalization and increased interconnectivity.

Dan Britt - Orbits and Ice Ages: The History of Climate
Another lecture in IHMC's award winning lecture series. http://www.ihmc.us Climate change has become a major political issue, but few understand how climate has changed in the past and the forces that drive climate. Most people don't know that fifty million years ago there were breadfruit trees and crocodiles on the shores of the Arctic Ocean, or that 18,000 years ago there was a mile-thick glacier on Manhattan and a continuous belt of winter sea ice extending south to Cape Hatteras. The History of Climate provides context of our current climate debate and fundamental insight how the climate works. Political Ideology: Crash Course Government and Politics #35
So today Craig is going to look at political ideology in America. We're going to focus on liberals and conservatives and talk about the influencers of both of these viewpoints. Now, it's important to remember that political ideologies don't always perfectly correspond with political parties, and this correspondence becomes less and less likely over time. So, sure we can say that Democrats tend to be liberal and Republicans tend to be conservative, but we're not going to be talking about political parties in this episode. It's also important to note, that there are going to be a lot of generalizations here, as most peoples' ideologies fall on a spectrum, but we're going to try our best *crosses fingers* to summarize the most commonly held viewpoints for each of these positions as they are used pretty frequently in discussions of American politics.
