Episode 19: Self-Help Vs. Victimhood Politics

34:33
Podcasters like Tim Ferris and Joe Rogan draw millions of listeners who are more interested in self-improvement than identity politics. Are these “podcast bros” (as the New York Times has dubbed them) placing too much emphasis on individualism and not enough on collective injustices? Or are they offering an empowering alternative to debilitating narratives of victimhood? The FEEcasters are joined by guest-host Sean Malone to discuss! John Sterman– From Climate Change to Political and Personal Change

01:00:01
The science is clear: the Earth is warming; human activity, particularly combustion of fossil fuels, is responsible; and climate change poses grave risks to our prosperity, our health and our lives. The historic Paris Climate Accord entered into force in November 2016, but in June 2017 the United States announced it intends to withdraw from the agreement. What is the future of global efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions? Will the Paris agreement unravel, or will other nations, along with states, cities and companies in the US, make up the difference? Can we build an economy powered by clean, renewable energy in time? We’ll explore these questions with an interactive simulation developed by MIT and ClimateInteractive.org. For complex, contentious issues like climate change, change happens when people learn for themselves. Professor Sterman will demonstrate how their interactive tools are being used by political leaders, policymakers, and members of the public around the world to build shared understanding of climate change and the task before us. Finally, we’ll discuss what can each we do, professionally and personally, to build a safer, sustainable world in which all can thrive. John D. Sterman is the Jay W. Forrester Professor of Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management and a Professor in the MIT Institute for Data, Systems, and Society. He is also the Director of the MIT System Dynamics Group and the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative. Sterman’s research centers on improving decision-making in complex systems, including corporate strategy and operations, energy policy, public health, environmental sustainability, and climate change. His work ranges from the dynamics of organizational change and the implementation of sustainable improvement programs to climate change and the implementation of policies to promote a sustainable world. Sterman pioneered the development of “management flight simulators” of corporate and economic systems which are now used by corporations, universities, and governments around the world. He is the author of many scholarly and popular articles on the challenges and opportunities facing organizations today, including the book, Modeling for Organizational Learning, and the award-winning textbook, Business Dynamics. Laughably Biased or Fair & Balanced Climate Change Debate?

"Fox News contributor George Will on Sunday argued that climate change was a hoax because the world had also gotten warmer during the Middle Ages...Fox News contributor Kirsten Powers asserted that climate change had become an "article of faith" for liberals, making the president's effort an "overtly political move." Are Your Political Beliefs Genetic?

05:09
The brain isn’t partisan, but when we move to political extremes, it can affect our physiology and psychology. The Genes of Left and Right: Our political attitudes may be written in our DNA https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-genes-of-left-and-right/ “The genes involved in such complex traits are difficult to pinpoint because they tend to be involved in a huge number of bodily and cognitive processes that each play a minuscule role in shaping our political attitudes. Yet a study published in 2015 in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B managed to do just that, showing that genes encoding certain receptors for the neurotransmitter dopamine are associated with where we fall on the liberal-conservative axis.” Political Orientations Are Correlated with Brain Structure in Young Adults https://www.cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(11)00289-2 “We speculate that the association of gray matter volume of the amygdala and anterior cingulate cortex with political attitudes that we observed may reflect emotional and cognitive traits of individuals that influence their inclination to certain political orientations. For example, our findings are consistent with the proposal that political orientation is associated with psychological processes for managing fear and uncertainty.” The Myth of the Teen Brain https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-myth-of-the-teen-brain-2007-06/ “Considerable research shows that a persons emotions and behaviors continuously change brain anatomy and physiology. Stress creates hypersensitivity in dopamine-producing neurons that persists even after they are removed from the brain. Enriched environments produce more neuronal connections. For that matter, meditation, diet, exercise, studying and virtually all other activities alter the brain, and a new study shows that smoking produces brain changes similar to those produced in animals given heroin, cocaine or other addictive drugs. So if teens are in turmoil, we will necessarily find some corresponding chemical, electrical or anatomical properties in the brain. But did the brain cause the turmoil, or did the turmoil alter the brain?“ ____________________ Your brain is extremely complex and it influences the way you think and the choices that you make. Political change equals climate change for blacks

42:04
At some point we as black people have to break the yoke of the Democratic Party if we want to break the cycle of destruction we have been living under. It will take a political break, but we also need to create an economic system that gives us power to control our politicians and not the other way around. The black politician does nothing for us other than pay lip service because we are an economically weak people. Politicians ignore us because we lack that power. In spite of all of the discrimination from 1865-1965, blacks found a way to prosper. Since 1964 with all of the government help we somehow found a way to become permanent victims and regress. And before you get unhinged, the Republican Party is not the solution either. But why even talk about a party whom we never support? Just so you know, poor normally means black. Here is an article I just came across. I think it fits with this information I am sharing. http://savingourfuture.com/2015/06/might-disappointment-in-obama-lead-some-african-americans-to-discover-conservatism/2/

Nepal towards Political Changes, Elections and Development ||

09:46
Published Date: 27 Nov, 2017 .. Socio-psychological status was still under the influence of feudalism. Society was segmented into feudal and peasants. In national level feudal were Kings and their closely related ministers and high level bureaucrats. Whereas at local level, feudal were those who were relatives and keen of the local government authorities. His Majesty’s government was careful in appointing authorities to maintain the system. Nepal was suffering badly due its poor literacy rate. Majority of the population was illiterate only because of this socio-psychological situation. The education was rare, few had the chance to study and that was not enough to change the fate of Nepal. ... In 1960, King Mahendra used his emergency powers and took charge of the State once again. Political parties were outlawed and all prominent political figures, including the Prime Minister, were put behind bars. Civil liberties were curtailed and press freedom muzzled. King Mahendra, then, through an "exercise of the sovereign power and prerogatives inherent in us" promulgated a new constitution in December 1962 introducing a party-less Panchayat system. In November 1990, after the Jana Andolan movement, the new Constitution was adopted and the country became a constitutional monarchy. This constitution forced the monarchy of King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev to hand over decisions of government to the Nepali people....... Gyanendra took complete control, on 1st February 2005, he dismissed Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba's government for failing to make arrangements for parliamentary elections and being unable to restore peace in the country, which was then in the midst of a civil war led by Maoist insurgents.... On May 18, 2006 the Parliament unanimously voted to strip the King of many of his powers. May 29, 2008, a new constitution was voted on by the Nepalese Parliament, which declared that the monarchy would be deposed and a new parliamentary republic would become the Nepalese political framework. Constitution of Nepal 2015 is the present governing Constitution of Nepal. Nepal is governed according to the Constitution which came into effect on Sept 20, 2015, replacing the Interim Constitution of 2007.......... During the writing of this article, more than 3 million Nepali called to vote today for provincial & federal legislative elections. This ascertains important milestone to implement new constitution of Nepal. Right after the people’s movement in 2006, Dr. Chaitanya Mishra in his paper “Political Transition in Nepal: Toward an Analytical Framework” had written, A potentially momentous political transition has been underway in Nepal beginning April 2006. It is likely that the transition will mark a key political break with the past. He had added, “To the extent that monarchy renews itself, which appears unlikely, it will be rendered politically and militarily powerless, and undivided sovereign powers will finally be vested in the people and their representatives. It is also likely that the state and society in Nepal will become more democratic, inclusive and plural than in the past.”..... Many of Nepali people have seen the developed society and some of them have heard about it. They know every citizen in the country is as important as the leader. The thought and the behavior of every individual affect the speed and rate of the development. The tendency to seek the better life is the move towards the development of the society and whole nation. The level of effort applied by individual utilizing available resources towards the better life leads the nation to the development. Seeking logical explanation on everything rather by greed or self-interest, respect of labor, respect of individual regardless of his/her situation, freedom of speech, balancing of rights and duties, productive working mechanism, desire of better life, good family leads the whole society and the nation towards the development. Remote societies need special attention by their local leaders. ..... The Constitution, the Articles, and Federalism: Crash Course US History #8

13:04
In which John Green teaches you about the United States Constitution. During and after the American Revolutionary War, the government of the new country operated under the Articles of Confederation. While these Articles got the young nation through its war with England, they weren't of much use when it came to running a country. So, the founding fathers decided try their hand at nation-building, and they created the Constitution of the United States, which you may remember as the one that says We The People at the top. John will tell you how the convention came together, some of the compromises that had to be made to pass this thing, and why it's very lucky that the framers installed a somewhat reasonable process for making changes to the thing. You'll learn about Shays' Rebellion, the Federalist Papers, the elite vs rabble dynamic of the houses of congress, and start to find out just what an anti-federalist is. Poland is pushing the EU into crisis

08:08
Poland’s far-right party is subverting democracy, and setting the country on a collision course with the EU. For more detail on the 2017 Independence day march, read this excellent piece by Christian Davies in the Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/nov/18/more-girls-fewer-skinheads-polands-far-right-wrestles-with-changing-image Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Poland is changing. In 2015, the far-right Law and Justice party, or PiS, won both the presidential election and a slim parliamentary majority. Since then, they’ve been working to cement their power by firing judges, purging the military and civil service, and cracking down on protesters and the media. All of this has put the country on a collision course with the European Union that could threaten Europe’s hard-won peace and prosperity following centuries of conflict. To truly understand the international conflicts and trends shaping our world you need a big-picture view. Nigel Farage: Big political change is coming in Britain

03:30
Support: http://www.ukip.org/donations | http://www.ukipmeps.org | http://twitter.com/Nigel_Farage • European Parliament, Strasbourg, 23 October 2012 • Speaker: Nigel Farage MEP, Leader of the UK Independence Party (UKIP), Co-President of the 'Europe of Freedom and Democracy' (EFD) Group in the European Parliament - http://nigelfaragemep.co.uk • Debate: Conclusions of the European Council meeting of the 18-19 October 2012 - with statements by the European Council president Herman Van Rompoy and the Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso [2012/2640(RSP)] Transcript: Well, Mr Van Rompuy, when you first appeared here in what proved to be a rather expensive speech, I said you'd be the quiet assassin of nation state democracy. And sure enough, in your dull and technocratic way, you've gone about your course. But I have to say, you're even worse than I thought you were going to be. I thought it was just going to be a federal Europe - a federal union. But actually it appears with every statement you make that what you now want is the total subjugation of the states to completely undemocratic structures based in Brussels. I misread the bailouts. I thought that when the bailouts happened - and I could see the panic around this chamber, people fearing the economic meltdown. But you of course were calm through it all, because you saw the bailouts as your opportunity to take control. Just think how Ireland today is managed. Greece, for that matter. The sinister-sounding Troika [Commission-ECB-IMF] come in, 50 officials spend a few days in the country, investigate the situation and then tell puppet prime ministers what they may or may not do. And I note great enthusiasm in this chamber for Spain to have a bailout. Lots of members here want Spain to accept the bailout so that they too are subjugated to this new order. Indeed in Italy, the appointee there, Mr Monti, is very keen for his own country to be bailed out, because, to quote him, he fears that parliamentary democracy could bring down the European Union. So I think it's pretty clear that your next phase is for those who haven't been bailed out and may not need to be bailed out; you now want them to sign guarantees, budget guarantees, and to have the power to strike down national budgets after they have been through parliaments. I have to say, I feel that the eurozone is now in a very drk place, economically, socially, politically, and I fear that the countries trapped inside it - in that prison - will be there for many years to come. So it's odd against this backdrop that the Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to the European Union. It's true that Germany hasn't invaded France since 1945, but I don't think there was any prospect of that happening, unless of course what you're all saying is that the Germans are inherently bad people. No, the treath actually came from Russia, and we should be thanking NATO. And we should be thanking millions of American soldiers who served on European soil to maintain peace. Yet I don't hear a word of that because we loathe America and everything that it stands for. No, this is now a divided, split Europe, with neo-Nazi politics on the rise, with violent demonstrations in the streets. And I frankly think that the award of that Nobel Prize devalues that whole organisation. Well, it's not all bad news, because in Britain the opinion polls are clear that a clear majority of Brits now want to leave this Union, leaving David Cameron as piggy-in-the-middle, trying to pretend to be a Eurosceptic when he comes over here, going back home and claiming victories - but he's stuck. And I predict one thing: Big political change is coming in Britain because he's losing the support of millions of his own voters. .................................. • Video: EbS (European Parliament) .................................. • EU Member States: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Estonia, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, United Kingdom

Separation of Powers and Checks and Balances: Crash Course Government and Politics #3

08:31
In which Craig Benzine teaches you about the US Governments Separation of powers and the system of checks and balances. In theory, the Legislative Branch, the Executive Branch, and the Judicial Brach are designed to keep each other in check, and to keep any branch from becoming too powerful. In reality, the system was designed to keep the president from becoming some kind of autocrat. For the most part, it has worked. Craig will call in the clones to explain which powers belong to which branches, and to reveal some secret perks that the Supreme Court justices enjoy. Jordan Peterson: The fatal flaw in leftist American politics

09:45
What is political extremism? Professor of psychology Jordan Peterson points out that America knows what right-wing radicalism looks like: The doctrine of racial superiority is where conservatives have drawn the line. "What’s interesting is that on the conservative side of the spectrum we’ve figured out how to box-in the radicals and say, 'No, you’re outside the domain of acceptable opinion,'" says Peterson. But where's that line for the Left? There is no universal marker of what extreme liberalism looks like, which is devastating to the ideology itself but also to political discourse as a whole. Fortunately, Peterson is happy to suggest such a marker: "The doctrine of equality of outcome. It seems to me that that’s where people who are thoughtful on the Left should draw the line, and say no. Equality of opportunity? [That's] not only fair enough, but laudable. But equality of outcome…? It’s like: 'No, you’ve crossed the line. We’re not going there with you.'" Peterson argues that it's the ethical responsibility of left-leaning people to identify liberal extremism and distinguish themselves from it the same way conservatives distance themselves from the doctrine of racial superiority. Failing to recognize such extremism may be liberalism's fatal flaw. Jordan Peterson is the author of 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos Read more at BigThink.com: http://bigthink.com/videos/jordan-peterson-the-fatal-flaw-lurking-in-american-leftist-politics Follow Big Think here: YouTube: http://goo.gl/CPTsV5 Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigThinkdotcom Twitter: https://twitter.com/bigthink Transcript: I would like to talk briefly about depolarization on the Left and the Right, because I think there’s a technical problem that needs to be addressed. So here’s what I’ve been thinking about. It’s been obvious to me for some time that, for some reason, the fundamental claim of post-modernism is something like an infinite number of interpretations and no canonical overarching narrative. Okay, but the problem with that is: okay, now what? No narrative, no value structure that is canonically overarching, so what the hell are you going to do with yourself? How are you going to orient yourself in the world? Well, the post-modernists have no answer to that. So what happens is they default—without any real attempt to grapple with the cognitive dissonance—they default to this kind of loose, egalitarian Marxism. And if they were concerned with coherence that would be a problem, but since they’re not concerned with coherence it doesn’t seem to be a problem. But the force that’s driving the activism is mostly the Marxism rather than the post-modernism. It’s more like an intellectual gloss to hide the fact that a discredited economic theory is being used to fuel an educational movement and to produce activists. But there’s no coherence to it. It’s not like I’m making this up, you know. Derrida himself regarded—and Foucault as well—they were barely repentant Marxists. They were part of the student revolutions in France in the 1960s, and what happened to them, essentially—and what happened to Jean-Paul Sartre for that matter—was that by the end of the 1960s you couldn’t be conscious and thinking and pro-Marxist. There’s so much evidence that had come pouring in from the former Soviet Union, from the Soviet Union at that point, and from Maoist China, of the absolutely devastating consequences of the doctrine that it was impossible to be apologetic for it by that point in time. So the French intellectuals in particular just pulled off a sleight of hand and transformed Marxism into post-modern identity politics. And we’ve seen the consequence of that. It’s not good. It’s a devolution into a kind of tribalism that will tear us apart on the Left and on the Right. In my house, I have a very large collection of socialist, realist paintings from the former Soviet Union—propaganda pieces, but also kind of harsh impressionist pieces of working-class people and so forth—and I collected them for a variety of reasons. Now you could debate about the propriety of that given the murderousness of those regimes. And fair enough, I have my reasons. But I don’t have paintings from the Nazi era in my house, and I wouldn’t. And that’s been a puzzlement to me because I regard the communists, the totalitarian communist regimes, as just as murderous as the Nazi regimes. But there’s an evil associated with the Nazi regime that seems more palpable in some sense. So I’ve been thinking about that for a long time. And then I’ve been thinking about a corollary to that, which is part of the problem with our current political debate. On the Right, I think we’ve identified markers for people who have gone too far in their ideological presuppositions. And it looks to me like the marker we’ve identified is racial superiority.

Where US Politics Came From: Crash Course US History #9

13:57
In which John Green teaches you where American politicians come from. In the beginning, soon after the US constitution was adopted, politics were pretty non-existent. George Washington was elected president with no opposition, everything was new and exciting, and everyone just got along. For several months. Then the contentious debate about the nature of the United States began, and it continues to this day. Washington and his lackey/handler Alexander Hamilton pursued an elitist program of federalism. They attempted to strengthen the central government, create a strong nation-state, and leave less of the governance to the states, They wanted to create debt, encourage manufacturing, and really modernize the new nation/ The opposition, creatively known as the anti-federalists, wanted to build some kind of agrarian pseudo-paradise where every (white) man could have his own farm, and live a free, self-reliant life. The founding father who epitomized this view was Thomas Jefferson. By the time Adams became president, the anti-federalists had gotten the memo about how alienating a name like anti-federalist can be. It's so much more appealing to voters if your party is for something rather than being defined by what you're against, you know? In any case, Jefferson and his acolytes changed their name to the Democratic-Republican Party, which covered a lot of bases, and proceeded to protest nearly everything Adams did. Lest you think this week is all boring politics, you'll be thrilled to hear this episode has a Whiskey Rebellion, a Quasi-War, anti-French sentiment, some controversial treaties, and something called the XYZ Affair, which sounds very exciting. Learn all about it this week with John Green. Hey teachers and students - Check out CommonLit's free collection of reading passages and curriculum resources to learn more about the events of this episode. Much of America's politics came from debates between democratic republican Thomas Jefferson and federalist Alexander Hamilton: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/alexander-hamilton While Jefferson would go on to become president, Hamilton heavily influenced President George Washington who set many American political ideals in his farewell address that Hamilton helped craft: https://www.commonlit.org/texts/washington-s-farewell-address Follow us! http://www.twitter.com/thecrashcourse http://www.twitter.com/realjohngreen http://www.twitter.com/crashcoursestan http://www.twitter.com/raoulmeyer http://www.twitter.com/saysdanica http://www.twitter.com/thoughtbubbler Turn on the captions. You Want REAL Political Change? Repeal the ‘Federal Reserve Act 1913’

10:02
You Want REAL Political Change? Repeal the ‘Federal Reserve Act 1913’ A buzz word used by many presidential candidates is “change”. Indeed, for the past several election cycles, it’s been a prominent word used in all presidential campaigns. However, just as conspicuous in most of these campaigns is the fact that the candidates who talk of “change” do not tell us specifically what changes they are talking about. Sure, we get generalizations about ‘ending the war’ and ‘changing the way Washington does business’, but the actual changes being promised by candidates of any political persuasion are a mystery to us... SOURCES: by Alan R. Adaschik Guest writer for Wake Up World About the author: Alan R. AdaschikAlan Adaschik was born in New London, Connecticut in 1943. He was raised in Brooklyn, New York and attended Franklin K. Lane High School. Upon graduation, he was accepted as an engineering student by the University of Michigan in its Naval ROTC program. Upon completing college, Al qualified for Navy flight training and received his wings as a Jet Fighter Pilot in June of 1966. After completing his tour of duty, he left the service and earned a MBA from Long Island University. Al has worked as a Flight Test Conductor for the Grumman Aerospace Corporation, a Financial Analyst for the Singer Company, a Senior Financial Analyst for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, and a Financial Administrator for the City of Fort Lauderdale. In 1994, Congress passed the unconstitutional General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) which made the United States a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO). Acting as Attorney Pro-se for the voting citizens of this nation, Al sued our government over the constitutionality of GATT. The Court ruled his lawsuit was without merit on technical reasons and Al did not pursue the matter further. Al has written three books; “While We Sleep – A Story of Government Without Law”, “An Alaskan Adventure – A Travelogue and Environmental Treatise” and his latest book, “100 Years of Deception: A Blueprint for the Destruction of a Nation”. Al also developed and hosted a website called “The Constitution forum” (which is no longer online) and as host of this site, authored a plethora of political articles and essays, many of which can still be found online at various websites. The article enables the state to provide special rights and privileges that permanent residents can enjoy but has been criticised by BJP as a provision that encourages alienation, deepens the concept of a separate identity and creates a political gap between J&K and the rest of India. CA Electricity Flame Out

02:45
Due to recent wildfires in California, PG&E is going up in flames. The utility is filing for bankruptcy, and while many are blaming man-caused climate change, it’s not the villain in this horror story. VISIT Clear Energy Alliance https://clearenergyalliance.com/ FOLLOW us! Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ClearEnergyAlliance Twitter: https://twitter.com/clearenergy Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/clearenergyalliance For list of sources and downloadable transcript: https://clearenergyalliance.com/project/ca-electricity-flame-out/ Script: La La Land is getting a disastrous dose of reality. Wildfires sparked by utility lines have ravaged the state, forcing California’s largest utility to announce it is filing for bankruptcy. Pacific Gas & Electric’s wildfire liabilities could be as high as $30 billion, triple its market value. Predictably, PG&E, state politicians and activist groups have been quick to point the finger at man-caused climate change. That excuse may be convenient, but it’s far from accurate. University of Washington climate scientist Cliff Mass told the Daily Caller that climate change had little to do with the state’s massive wildfires. A 2016 National Academy of Sciences paper agrees with that assessment. The NAS concluded, “The risk of any individual fire depends on forest management, natural climate variability and human activities in the forest.” Consider that for decades California’s restrictive zoning laws in urban areas have incentivized people to build millions of homes in fire-prone regions. PG&E couldn’t keep up with the enormous amount of work needed to be done in replacing old and poorly maintained infrastructure while trimming millions of trees in a service area the size of Florida. State leaders should have allocated a lot more money to reduce the fire danger risk, but PG&E customers are already paying about 65 percent more than the national average for electricity, largely because of the state’s love affair with wind turbines and solar panels. PG&E has signed $34 billion dollars in renewable energy contracts to buy power from wind and solar installations well above current market rates. The political pressure to embrace all things renewable while not fully facing energy reality is a script for a disaster movie. But this horror flick is real, and ultimately the citizens of California will be picking up most of the tab for their state’s energy mismanagement. Unfortunately, the scripts for more California wildfire disaster sequels are still being written, but man-caused climate change is not the villain. For the Clear Energy Alliance, I’m Mark Mathis. Power On.

POLITICAL THEORY - Karl Marx

09:28
Karl Marx remains deeply important today not as the man who told us what to replace capitalism with, but as someone who brilliantly pointed out certain of its problems. The School of Life, a pro-Capitalist institution, takes a look. For gifts and more from The School of Life, visit our online shop: https://goo.gl/O1tWri Download our App: https://goo.gl/kj9Vvr FURTHER READING “Most people agree that we need to improve our economic system somehow. It threatens our planet through excessive consumption, distracts us with irrelevant advertising, leaves people hungry and without healthcare, and fuels unnecessary wars. Yet we’re also often keen to dismiss the ideas of its most famous and ambitious critic, Karl Marx. This isn’t very surprising. In practice, his political and economic ideas have been used to design disastrously planned economies and nasty dictatorships. Frankly, the remedies Marx proposed for the ills of the world now sound a bit demented. He thought we should abolish private property. People should not be allowed to own things. At certain moments one can sympathise. But it’s like wanting to ban gossip or forbid watching television. It’s going to war with human behaviour. And Marx believed the world would be put to rights by a dictatorship of the proletariat; which does not mean anything much today. Openly Marxist parties received a total of only 1,685 votes in the 2010 UK general election, out of the nearly 40 million ballots cast…” You can read more on this and many other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org at this link: https://goo.gl/Rt3zri MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/93tGtZ Watch more films on POLITICAL THEORY in our playlist: http://bit.ly/2dma0Sn Do you speak a different language to English? स्विटजरलैण्ड का संविधान constitution of switzerland BA 2nd year:(political science paper 1st)[Hindi]

05:18
The Constitution was adopted by popular vote on 18 April 1999. It replaced the prior federal constitution of 1874, which it was intended to bring up to date without changing it in substance. The groundwork for today's Swiss Constitution was laid with the promulgation of the Constitution of 12 September 1848, which was influenced by the ideas of the United States Constitution and the French Revolution. This constitution provided for the cantons' sovereignty, as long as this did not impinge on the Federal Constitution. This constitution was created in response to a 27-day civil war in Switzerland, theSonderbundskrieg. The Constitution of 1848 was partly revised in 1866, and wholly revised in 1874. This latter constitutional change introduced thereferendum at the federal level. Beginning in 1891, the constitution contained the "right of initiative", under which a certain number of voters could make a request to amend a constitutional article, or even to introduce a new article into the constitution. This mechanism is called federal popular initiative. Thus, partial revisions of the constitution could be made any time. The Federal Constitution was wholly revised for the second time in the 1990s, and the new version was approved by popular and cantonal vote on 18 April 1999. It came into force on 1 January 2000. The 2000 Constitution of Switzerland consists of Preambule and 6 Parts, which together make up 196 Articles. It provides an explicit provision for nine fundamental rights, which up until then had only been discussed and debated in the Federal Court. It also provides for greater details in tax laws. Most notable to an outside observer was the abatement of the restriction on the Swiss neutrality, which allowed the country to become a full member of the United Nations in 2002. Owing to constitutional initiatives and counterproposals, the Swiss Constitution is subject to continual changes. https://youtu.be/tZdBdM2RAMA https://youtu.be/Ngz6wFPtKvI

What is POLITICAL ECOLOGY? What does POLITICAL ECOLOGY mean? POLITICAL ECOLOGY meaning

04:37
What is POLITICAL ECOLOGY? What does POLITICAL ECOLOGY mean? POLITICAL ECOLOGY meaning - POLITICAL ECOLOGY definition - POLITICAL ECOLOGY explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Political ecology is the study of the relationships between political, economic and social factors with environmental issues and changes. Political ecology differs from apolitical ecological studies by politicizing environmental issues and phenomena. The academic discipline offers wide-ranging studies integrating ecological social sciences with political economy in topics such as degradation and marginalization, environmental conflict, conservation and control, and environmental identities and social movements. The term "political ecology" was first coined by Frank Thone in an article published in 1935. It has been widely used since then in the context of human geography and human ecology, but with no systematic definition. Anthropologist Eric R. Wolf gave it a second life in 1972 in an article entitled "Ownership and Political Ecology," in which he discusses how local rules of ownership and inheritance "mediate between the pressures emanating from the larger society and the exigencies of the local ecosystem", but did not develop the concept further Other origins include other early works of Wolf as well as John W. Cole at the University of Massachusetts, Hans Magnus Enzensberger and others in the 1970s and 1980s. The origins of the field in the 1970s and 1980s were a result of the development of development geography and cultural ecology., particularly the work of Piers Blaikie on the sociopolitical origins of soil erosion. Historically, political ecology has focused on phenomena in and affecting the developing world; since the field’s inception, "research has sought primarily to understand the political dynamics surrounding material and discursive struggles over the environment in the third world". Scholars in political ecology are drawn from a variety of academic disciplines, including geography, anthropology, development studies, political science, sociology, forestry, and environmental history. Political ecology’s broad scope and interdisciplinary nature lends itself to multiple definitions and understandings. However, common assumptions across the field give the term relevance. Raymond L. Bryant and Sinéad Bailey developed three fundamental assumptions in practicing political ecology: First, costs and benefits associated with environmental change are distributed unequally. Changes in the environment do not affect society in a homogenous way: political, social, and economic differences account for uneven distribution of costs and benefits. Second, this unequal distribution inevitably reinforces or reduces existing social and economic inequalities - "any change in environmental conditions must affect the political and economic status quo." Third, the unequal distribution of costs and benefits and the reinforcing or reducing of pre-existing inequalities has political implications in terms of the altered power relationships that then result. In addition, political ecology attempts to provide critiques and alternatives in the interplay of the environment and political, economic and social factors. Paul Robbins asserts that the discipline has a "normative understanding that there are very likely better, less coercive, less exploitative, and more sustainable ways of doing things". From these assumptions, political ecology can be used to: - inform policymakers and organizations of the complexities surrounding environment and development, thereby contributing to better environmental governance. - understand the decisions that communities make about the natural environment in the context of their political environment, economic pressure, and societal regulations - look at how unequal relations in and among societies affect the natural environment, especially in context of government policy.

POLITICAL THEORY - John Maynard Keynes

11:18
John Maynard Keynes was arguably the greatest economist of the 20th century. He discovered the idea that governments should stimulate demand during economic downturns – and was the creator of both the IMF and the World Bank. His ideas continue to underpin a lot of the modern economic system.
