Juice, after being squeezed from different fruits, is kept in huge vacuum-sealed tanks where it can sit for up to a year before being packaged! And by that time, the juice has lost all its flavor, which is why manufacturers have to add artificial flavoring to make it taste fruity again. In most cases, cereals are loaded with refined carbohydrates and sugar. Even if the label assures you that it's fat-free and whole grain, check the list of ingredients. You'll most likely see that the product is full of sugar. Despite common belief, most yogurts don't contain probiotic bacteria since the process of pasteurization kills all these microorganisms. When consumed, trans-fats in ice-cream can cause high cholesterol, stroke, heart disease, and even cancer. Ice cream is also loaded with sugar, artificial flavors, and synthetic preservatives. And if it’s pink, purple, or red, it’s most likely been colored with cochineal extract or carmine, additives which can cause bad allergic reactions. Popcorn has some genetically modified ingredients as well as taste-boosting chemicals and additives. This leads to health problems such as heart attacks, digestive issues, allergies, skin rashes, breathing problems, and the depressing list goes on. Even more, popcorn is extremely caloric. These oils, when heated, become nothing more than trans-fats. -One egg contains as much cholesterol as a big greasy burger. -Microwave popcorn’s almost always lined with the same toxic substance you can find in Teflon pans. -If candy doesn’t contain sugar, it contains artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, sucralose, and saccharine. Sugar is a substance extracted from plants like cane and sugar beet which is refined into a white crystalline substance. Since their effect on the blood stream, insulin, and brain are virtually the same, they are both considered sugar in the context of this video. http://www.health.harvard.edu/diseases-and-conditions/glycemic_index_and_glycemic_load_for_100_foods? Realize what’s going on with your brain your body, sugar, and flour. People often stop consuming obvious sugar culprits like sodas and candy bars and trade them for bread and pasta. As previously discussed, those breads and pastas cause the same problems as sugar. #2. Understand levels of addiction Not everyone who drinks becomes an alcoholic. The same way not everyone who eats dessert becomes a sugar addict. We are individuals with different brain chemistry and the important thing is recognizing your own personal level of addiction. If just thinking about giving up sugar seems like a bleak, dark, and unhappy world, understand this is uniquely similar to how addicts feel about substances they abuse. You may be VERY addicted to sugar. #3. Detox You need to spend a period of time completely away from sugar and those dopamine spikes to break the addiction. This will often lead to an initial period of headaches, hormonal fluctuations, and just feeling like poop for a little while. The detox process can last from anywhere from 3 to 21 days. However, on the other side of breaking any addiction is a much healthier place. #4. Become a nutrition label ninja. Sugar is often hiding in places you don’t expect. Yogurt, pasta sauce, are protein bars often have TONS of added sugar You need to become a PRO a reading nutrition labels and feel free to check out my older video on the topic. #5. Balance blood sugar levels by eating balanced meals During the detox process, you need to focus on having balanced meals to keep your blood sugar levels steady to prevent crashes. You do this by eating meals that combine protein, fiber, and healthy fats. Whole egg omelets with lots of veggies, Chicken salads with olive oil dressing, and a grass fed beef stew are great examples of this. Protein, fiber, and healthy fat at every meal. #6. Heal you gut In an interesting study in Switzerland, men who were separated into two group based on chocolate cravings. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/10/12/AR2007101200019.html You do this by eating balanced meals as listed above, avoiding sugar and processed foods, and getting healthy probiotics into your diet. What about honey and agave nectar? Because of how the brain works the more you eat sugar, the more you crave. While these sugars do have mild health benefits, if you are struggling with even a mild sugar addiction, you need to cut these things out. Sooooo what about artificial sweeteners like Stevia? Galit Goldfarb begins with her own story -- becoming bulimic as a teen, and determining to learn all she could about science and nutrition in college, and yet still not achieving health. She studied medical science, opening a clinic after her return. But everyone she treated felt better only in the short-term. She was also diagnosed with cancer. She began to learn all about human health, reading from all the scientific fields until she was able to understand the answer: the guerilla diet (food choices that fight back against everything she had learned!). Goldfarb takes us through ancient human history, demonstrating evidence of the earliest humans' health and diet (living into their 70s and eating plants, nuts, fruits, and legumes) and how humans moved shortsightedly away from that diet. Cancer free (without radiation), her final argument is simple -- while an "omnivore" diet may in the short term taste better, in the long term, it is unhealthy, not only for us but for our planet. Galit Goldfarb has worked within the health field for over 22 years. While working in different research laboratories and with many private clients, Galit has written eight books in the fields of health and personal development, including #1 International Bestseller “The Guerrilla Diet & Lifestyle Program” based on her in-depth research into the ideal diet for humans. Galit is a Professional member of the American Nutrition Association, and the American Society for Nutrition, and holds a BSc (honours) in Biochemistry and Nutrition, an MSc in Medical Science with Distinction, and studied Immunology for a Post Graduate Certificate. As your blood sugar goes up, your body secretes insulin to help lower it back down to a normal, healthy range. Now, carbs are not evil. However, the wrong carbs, especially in high amounts ARE bad for your health. Focus more on vegetables, some yams, little bit of rice, legumes, quinoa and whole grains. Get rid of the bad carbs and eat less total carbs.(2,3,4,5) 3. Eat More Fiber Fiber has so many benefits and sadly, most people are barely getting any. You should be eating at least 25 grams or more. While most Americans are barely getting around 5-10. 4. Eat Smaller Meals, More Often I’m sure you’ve heard about this when it comes to weight loss. However, one of the reasons for the weight loss is the lower blood sugar levels from eating smaller meals. (9,10,11) 5. Watch What You Drink You should never drink your calories -- no sodas, juices, alcohol, “shakes” or anything similar. They all digest quickly and spike up your blood sugar. 6. Manage Your Stress Levels You can’t have health without also discussing stress management. What’s interesting is that stress increases blood sugar levels AND decreases insulin sensitivity. (15,16) And this is because of a change in hormones such as glucagon, cortisol, testosterone, adrenal hormones and so forth. (17,18) 7. Better Quality Sleep You can’t manage your stress if you don’t get enough, quality sleep. Again, this has to do with a negative changes in your hormones when you don’t sleep well. (20,21) 8. Drink Apple Cider Vinegar Apple cider vinegar, like exercise, helps lower blood sugar levels AND improve insulin sensitivity. (22,23,24). 9. Lose Fat Losing unwanted fat and decreasing your belly fat has numerous health benefits. This is even more true with blood sugar levels because the lower your body fat, the higher your insulin sensitivity. 10. Take Natural Supplements Most people just give up after a week or two since they aren’t getting results fast enough, especially for the amount of time and effort.
