3 Rules to Avoid Violating Fair Use on YouTube

06:13
Even if the copyrighted material you use in your YouTube videos falls under Fair Use, you can still get into a lot of copyright issues and difficulties. The only entity that can determine if your use of copyrighted material falls under "Fair Use" or not is a court of law. YouTube doesn't make any judgement calls on fair use. They only give copyright holders the ability to find their material on YouTube through Content ID and determine what they want to do with the video that's using their material. Here's a few rules to help you avoid violating fair use and running into copyright problems on YouTube. How to write a good essay: Paraphrasing the question

14:39
Do you sometimes struggle to begin writing an essay when taking an exam? Good news! There is an important writing skill that will help you improve your essay introductions. This technique is called "paraphrasing", and it means rewriting something using different words. In this lesson, I will teach you how to paraphrase successfully and how to change essay questions into your own words. These skills are very useful for university and high school students, as well as any students writing English proficiency exams like the TOEFL or IELTS. TAKE THE QUIZ: http://www.engvid.com/how-to-write-a-good-essay-paraphrasing-the-question/ WATCH NEXT: Essay Writing – 6 ways to compare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8WSzwBD7GQ TRANSCRIPT Hi, there. My name is Emma, and in today's video I'm going to teach you something very important for if you're taking any type of test that has a writing component. So, if you are taking the IELTS, the TOEFL, the CELPIP, even just a university test, it can be any type of test, but if you're asked to write something like an essay or a paragraph, this video is for you. Okay? So I'm going to teach you a very important skill that will help improve your marks when it comes to writing on tests. So, let's get started. So, I have here an essay question. This question is actually... I've seen it on the IELTS. You know, you have similar types of questions on the TOEFL, sometimes in university. The question is this: "Education is the single most important factor in the development of a country. Do you agree or disagree?" Or maybe: "To what extent do you agree or disagree?" So, this is an example of a question you might be asked. Now, a problem a lot of students have is in their answer to this question. They see this, and they think: "Okay, education is the most important factor in the development of a country, yes, I agree." So then they... Or: "I disagree", and they start writing. And what do they write? Usually the very first thing students will write is this: "I agree that education is the single most important factor in the development of a country because..." So, what is the problem with this? Is there any problem to start off your essay with something like this, or to start off your answer? There's a big problem. So I want you to take a moment and think: "What could be the problem with starting your essay off with this sentence?" Okay, well, if you noticed, you have here the word: "education, education, is, is, the single most important, most important factor". If you notice, these are the same. They're the exact same, except for: "I agree that" and "because". The student, here, has used the exact same wording that is in the question. So, if you do this on the IELTS-and many students do this, same with on the TOEFL-you actually will lose marks, and same with in university, because you're not showing your abilities; you're just copying what somebody else has said or what the essay question is. So, in this video, I'm going to show you first off... First off, I'm going to tell you: Don't do this, don't copy. And I'm going to teach you ways in order to improve yourself and your answer by changing this wording. How can you change your introduction so it's different than what the question is? Okay? So, let's look at how to make these changes. Okay, so what we are going to do in order to change the question into a proper answer that doesn't just copy the question, is we are going to paraphrase. So, the word here is: "paraphrase". This might be a new word for you. What does it mean to paraphrase something? Well, when we paraphrase, it means we take a sentence that, you know... We take somebody else's sentence and we change it into our own words. Okay? So, we change the words of a sentence, we also change maybe the sentence structure, but we keep all the same meaning. Okay? So, the meaning from the sentence you copy, it stays the same, same meaning, but different words and different sentence structure. Okay? So it's in your words, but this other person's meaning. So, we are going to paraphrase this example of a question into our own words. So, first we're going to look at how to do that using vocabulary and synonyms. So, we have here the same question: "Education is the single most important factor in the development of a country." How can we put this into new words or our own words that keep the same meaning? Well, we can use synonyms. So, this might be a new word for you, too. A "synonym". "Synonyms" are words that have the same meaning, but are different words.

25 RULES To Follow When Living With ROOMMATES

09:47
At some point in our lives, it's likely we will live with other adults in a roommate type situation. This is actually a really good thing, as roommates help you grow as a person and living with others reveals a lot about ourselves. However, things can also get frustrating at times as everyone comes in with different expectations. The very best advice is to not take things personally, and have frequent and open communication. After that, here are 25 Rules To Follow When Living With Roommates. 25 Rules To Follow When Living With Roommates | List25 Talk about who takes showers when, and be considerate with the hot water. The sounds of, ahem, adult intimacy, are only enjoyable for those directly involved. Don't borrow things without asking. Ever. Refill the toilet paper roll when it's out. Don't gossip or talk trash about your roommate. Do not expect your roommates to either join you, or vanish, when you have friends over. Don't get your feelings hurt if your roommate doesn't want to be your BFF. Take turns taking out the trash. Everyone takes care of their own pets. Send a postcard (or bring home a small present!) when you go on vacation. Observe quiet hours. If you have a filtering water pitcher, such as a Britta, REFILL IT WHEN YOU POUR YOURSELF A GLASS. Figure out what to do if someone forgets their keys and gets locked out. Consider drafting a roommate agreement that all parties sign the day you move in, that clearly states some the "rules" everyone one agrees on. Does cooking mean you do the dishes yourself, or if you cook and your roommate partakes does that mean they automatically must do the dishes? What are the consequences of not doing your chores, aside from living in a dirty house and putting more work onto your roommates? Don't smoke in the house. Feel free to splurge on a maid service if you're both in agreement on it, and include it with your monthly bills. Agree to thermostat temps, put it in writing, and if you must, tape it to the wall beside the thermostat. Your significant other spending the night now and then is one thing. A dead plant is not a decorative plant and should be removed post haste. If you live in a dorm, you and your roommate both need to study. When it comes to decorating a communal space such as the living room or kitchen, remember those spaces are SHARED and should reflect everyone living in the house, not just one person. Discuss if there's communal food and what the rules are. Set expectations! Want more? Once you understand the Medicare basics of Part A and Medicare Part B, you will be faced with choosing one of three paths to take with your Medicare. . Medicare Part A is that portion of your health insurance that pays for your healthcare whenever you are an inpatient in a medical facility. As soon as you become an inpatient in a hospital, Medicare Part A takes over. The same when you become an inpatient in a skilled nursing facility or hospice. The one exception is that if you are not able to physically get to a medical facility for healthcare, Medicare Part A also pays for home healthcare. Think of Medicare Part A is inpatient insurance. Medicare Part B is the part of Medicare that pays for outpatient and physician services. This is the portion Medicare insurance you use when you see a doctor or have lab tests or physical therapy and so on. Medicare Part B also includes some wellness coverage. Medicare Part B is the part of Medicare people use most often because most of our medical care is via outpatient services. Even many surgeries and hospital services are now done as an outpatient and are thus covered under Medicare Part B. It is important that this Medicare explained video communicate what you need to know about Medicare. Understanding Medicare is important. So Medicare made clear is the first step to making an informed decision. Your Original Medicare (Part A & B) is good anywhere in the country. You can see any doctor, go to any medical facility in any state or territory, as long as they accept Medicare. You do not need to get permission from a primary care physician. Freedom of Speech: Crash Course Government and Politics #25

06:52
Today, FINALLY, Craig is going to talk about Free Speech! Now, free speech is so important because it not only allows you to critique the government, but it also protects you from the government. But it's essential to remember that not ALL speech is protected equally under the First Amendment, and just because you have a right to free speech doesn't mean your employer, for instance, can't fire you for something you say (unless your work for the government and then things get a bit more complicated). So we'll take a look at a couple significant Supreme Court cases that have gotten us to our current definition of free speech, and we'll also discuss some of the more controversial aspects of free speech - like hate speech. Hank takes a break from the desk to bring you to the lab in order to demonstrate some important points about the practical side of chemistry - experimentation in the laboratory. You'll learn what to wear in the lab, how to dispose of chemicals safely, how to avoid the most common accidents, how to pour solutions properly, what the HazMat diamond means, what an MSDS is, and how to use a fume hood. And as a reward for sticking with him through this maybe less-than-thrilling lecture, you'll see Hank subject himself to an exciting piece of safety apparatus. -- Table of Contents Proper Lab Attire 0:51 Disposing Chemicals Safely 6:30 Avoiding Common Lab Accidents 5:40 Proper Pouring 5:19 Hazmat Diamond 2:26 MSDS 3:05 How to use Fume Hoods 3:38 -- Want to find Crash Course elsewhere on the internet? Why art is important | Katerina Gregos | TEDxGhent

10:02
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Katerina Gregos is convinced that contemporary art has an important role to play in society, as one of the last frontiers of free expression. Today, artists and cultural practitioners, rather than politicians, are leading some of the key discussions about the state of the world. Contemporary artists challenge each and every one of us to reinterpret social and political events, and crack cemented opinions as well as dominant narratives propagated by the media and those in power. As an internationally respected curator, Katerina has curated a number of exhibitions dedicated to exploring the relationship between art, politics, democracy, the new global production circuits, and human rights. Let yourself be inspired by Katerina’s talk at TEDxGhent 2014, and find out what contemporary art can contribute to society. It is about the time that you are not eating. 31:24 Insulin inhibits lipolysis, stopping you from burning fat. 32:24 On a 7 day water only fast, your insulin falls and you switch from burning food to burning fat. 33:13 During fasting, as your insulin falls, you get a counter-regulatory hormone surge, increasing adrenaline, noradrenaline, growth hormone and cortisol. 33:53 There is a period of gluconeogenesis at around 24 hours into fasting. You will burn protein, not muscle. 35:40 If the old protein is never broken down, you cannot build new protein. 37:26 You get much better retention of lean mass with an intermittent fasting strategy over cutting calories. 38:24 Biggest Loser style diets sink metabolic rates. 42:15 Women can fast. Ghrelin is the hunger hormone. Women have higher ghrelin spikes. 43:01 If you don't eat over 24 hours ghrelin spikes 3 times, at breakfast, lunch and dinner, then drops. Hunger does not continue to increase. 45:04 Cravings disappear with fasting and keto. 49:38 You can eat high carb foods and keep low insulin. 51:09 Sugar is more fattening than other carbohydrates. 53:51 Natural foods have natural satiety mechanisms. 01:08:31 Type 2 diabetes is misunderstood by doctors. 01:10:08 Blood glucose is a symptom of type 2 diabetes. We treat the symptom, not the disease. 01:12:15 Type 2 diabetes is reversible, except for the very late stage. 01:16:42 The longer you've been overweight the more it effects weight loss. 01:18:08 There are conflicts of interest in medicine. Much evidence is produced by pharmaceutical companies. Universities take funding from industry and produce shoddy research. 01:30:21 Bias in nutrition science is rampant and has stymied the advancement of actual science. Special interest needs to be out of research.

Always seek the advice of a qualified healthcare provider with any questions you may have regarding a medical condition. Water moves from the more diluted solution to the more concentrated solution - from lower to higher osmolality. Sodium, being the major extracellular solute, is the principal determinant of plasma osmolality and the most important regulator of fluid balance. A normal blood sodium level is kept between 135 and 145 mmol/L. Hyponatremia occurs when blood sodium falls below 135, while hypernatremia is when it exceeds 145. Clinical manifestations of sodium disorders reflect disturbances in water movement in the brain. In hypernatremia, high blood sodium levels draw water out of the brain cells, causing dehydration and shrinkage. Whereas in hyponatremia, low concentrations of plasma sodium drive water into brain cells, making them swell, causing edema. Both situations produce neurologic symptoms, which can range from headache, confusion, to seizures, coma or even death. Hypernatremia most often occurs because of inadequate water intake, or excessive water loss or excretion. Water intake is regulated by thirst. When a decreased body fluid volume or an increased plasma osmolality is detected, the brain perceives it as thirst and produces water-seeking behavior. Impaired thirst mechanism is a common cause of hypernatremia in the elderly. The body loses water primarily by excreting it in urine. Water excretion by the kidneys is mainly regulated by vasopressin, a hypothalamic hormone that causes the kidneys to retain water in response to low blood volume or high plasma osmolality. Impaired vasopressin release, renal dysfunction, and use of certain diuretics, are common causes of excessive water loss through the kidneys. Fluid loss through the digestive tract is normally negligible, but can be substantial in vomiting or diarrhea. Sweat loss though skin can be significant in extreme heat or during excessive exercise. Chronic hypernatremia is treated with oral hypotonic fluids, while acute or severe hypernatremia may require intravenous administration along with constant monitoring to avoid overcorrection. For hyponatremia, treatment depends on the body fluid volume: - In low volume, or hypovolemic hyponatremia, both sodium and water levels decrease, but sodium loss is relatively greater. This commonly occurs due to loss of sodium-containing fluids, as in vomiting and diarrhea, especially when loses are replaced with plain water. This type is managed by rehydration with isotonic fluids. - In high volume, or hypervolemic hyponatremia, both sodium and water levels increase, with a relatively greater increase in body water. This often results from fluid retention in conditions such as heart failure, liver cirrhosis, or kidney failure; and is usually treated with diuresis. - In normal volume, or euvolemic hyponatremia, sodium level is normal, but there is an increase in total body water. This can be caused by excessive water intake combined with renal insufficiency, or syndrome of inappropriate ADH secretion, which causes the kidneys to retain more water. This type is managed by restricting free water intake and addressing the underlying cause. Premenopausal women are more susceptible to acute hyponatremia with severe brain edema, perhaps because female hormones increase vasopressin level, and inhibit the brain sodium-potassium pump, which pumps sodium out of the cell and helps maintain normal brain volume.

Monetary and Fiscal Policy: Crash Course Government and Politics #48

09:19
Today, Craig is going to dive into the controversy of monetary and fiscal policy. Monetary and fiscal policy are ways the government, and most notably the Federal Reserve, influences the economy - for better or for worse. So we’re going to start by looking at monetary policy, and specifically how the Federal Reserve uses interests rates as a means of controlling (or at least attempting to control) inflation. We’ll then move onto fiscal policy - that is the government’s use of taxation to raise and spend money. It’s all, well, pretty controversial, but as it seems Americans hate taxes the most, monetary policy is most often used - meaning that the Federal Reserve plays a hugely significant role in steering the U.S. economy. EPA and Army Propose New "Waters of the United States" Definition

01:26:39
NOTE: For captions for the first few minutes of the event please click the CC button to turn them on. Open captions begin at 2:24. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of the Army are proposing a clear, understandable, and implementable definition of “waters of the United States” that clarifies federal authority under the Clean Water Act. Unlike the Obama administration's 2015 definition of “waters of the United States,” the proposal contains a straightforward definition that would result in significant cost savings, protect the nation’s navigable waters, help sustain economic growth, and reduce barriers to business development. Free-Market Marijuana

03:21
By and large, marijuana legalization represents progress, argues writer Annie Lowrey. It’s well documented that prohibition has a tremendous fiscal cost, not to mention a far worse human cost. Researchers have also convincingly argued that cannabis is far less dangerous than legal substances such as alcohol. As a result, a solid majority of Americans support legalization. But are there significant public-health risks associated with legalization? In a new animated video, Lowrey highlights some pitfalls of free-market marijuana, including how the current lack of federal oversight has led to the absence of safety tests and standards. Furthermore, marijuana dependence and frequency of usage is increasing, and knowledge of the negative health effects of cannabis is not widespread. For more from Annie Lowrey, check out her article 'America’s Invisible Pot Addicts' here: https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2018/08/americas-invisible-pot-addicts/567886/

Free Case Study Video and Report: https://shorttermrentalacademy.com/optin-v2 Airbnb rentals are an amazing opportunity for existing (and new) investors to maximize their real estate returns. As well in many regions, airbnb has less scrutiny and regulation than a tradational rental property. Who is Adam Martin? In 25 short years, I’ve had the opportunity to see over 17 countries, and driven the entire West Coast from Whistler all the way through California and Death Valley. I hold an honours degree in International Business Management (BBA), I have been a partner in three start-up small businesses, and travelled professionally through Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba as a door-to-door salesperson. At 24, I quit my job to become a full time real estate investor working with Matt McKeever and Jeff Wybo. With very little capital and little borrowing power, I was forced to get very creative in how I sourced and funded my first deals. Since that first deal I've converted my student rental property to an Airbnb property to increase my returns while reducing my management headaches. Even though you probably don't choose to spend a lot of time thinking about it, your pee is kind of a big deal. Today we're talking about the anatomy of your urinary system, and how your kidneys filter metabolic waste and balance salt and water concentrations in the blood. We'll cover how nephrons use glomerular filtration, tubular reabsorption, and tubular secretion to reabsorb water and nutrients back into the blood, and make urine with the leftovers. Rossi VS Marquez 😱Best Overtake in MotoGP Season 2017 Part2/2

11:06
Rossi VS Marquez Best Overtake in MotoGP Season 2017 MotoGP : Grand Prix motorcycle racing refers to the premier class of motorcycle road racing events held on road circuits sanctioned by FIM. Independent motorcycle racing events have been held since the start of the twentieth century[1] and large national events were often given the title Grand Prix,[2] The foundation of a recognised international governing body for motorcycle sport, the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme in 1949 provided the opportunity to coordinate rules and regulations in order that selected events could count towards official World Championships as FIM Road Racing World Championship Grand Prix. It is the oldest established motorsport world championship.[3] Grand Prix motorcycles are purpose-built racing machines that are generally unavailable for purchase by the general public or able to be ridden legally on public roads. This contrasts with the various production-based categories of racing, such as the Superbike World Championship and the Isle of Man TT Races that feature modified versions of road-going motorcycles available to the public. The championship is currently divided into four classes: MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3 and MotoE. The first three classes use four-stroke engines, while the MotoE class (new in 2019) uses electric engines. The 2019 MotoGP season comprises 19 Grands Prix, with 12 held in Europe, three in Asia, two in the Americas, and one each in Australia and the Middle East. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "F1", "Formula 1", and "FIA World Championship" redirect here. For other uses, see F1 (disambiguation), Formula One (disambiguation), and List of FIA events. Formula One (also Formula 1 or F1) is the highest class of single-seater auto racing sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and owned by the Formula One Group. The FIA Formula One World Championship has been one of the premier forms of racing around the world since its inaugural season in 1950. The word "formula" in the name refers to the set of rules to which all participants' cars must conform.[1] A Formula One season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix (French for 'grand prizes' or 'great prizes'), which take place worldwide on purpose-built circuits and on public roads. The results of each race are evaluated using a points system to determine two annual World Championships: one for drivers, the other for constructors. Drivers must hold valid Super Licences, the highest class of racing licence issued by the FIA.[2] The races must run on tracks graded "1" (formerly "A"), the highest grade-rating issued by the FIA.[2] Most events occur in rural locations on purpose-built tracks, but several events take place on city streets. Formula One cars are the fastest regulated road-course racing cars in the world, owing to very high cornering speeds achieved through the generation of large amounts of aerodynamic downforce. The cars underwent major changes in 2017,[3] allowing wider front and rear wings, and wider tyres, resulting in cornering forces closing in on 6.5g and top speeds of up to approximately 375 km/h (235 mph).[4] As of 2019 the hybrid engines are limited in performance to a maximum of 15,000 rpm and the cars are very dependent on electronics—although traction control and other driving aids have been banned since 2008—and also on aerodynamics, suspension, and tyres. While Europe is the sport's traditional base, the championship operates globally, with 11 of the 21 races in the 2018 season taking place outside Europe. With the annual cost of running a mid-tier team—designing, building, and maintaining cars, pay, transport—being US$120 million,[5] Formula One has a significant economic and job-creation effect,[citation needed] and its financial and political battles are widely reported. Its high profile and popularity have created a major merchandising environment, which has resulted in large investments from sponsors and budgets (in the hundreds of millions for the constructors). On 8 September 2016 Bloomberg reported that Liberty Media had agreed to buy Delta Topco, the company that controls Formula One, from private-equity firm CVC Capital Partners for $4.4 billion in cash, stock, and convertible debt.[6] On 23 January 2017 Liberty Media confirmed the completion of the acquisition for $8 billion.[7][8

Media Institution: Crash Course Government and Politics #44

08:45
So today we're going to look at the rather thorny issue of the media and its role in politics. Wether you're talking about older forms of media like newspapers and radio or newer forms like television and the Internet, all media serves the same purpose - to provide information to the public. So we're going to discuss their strengths and weaknesses and examine how both content creators and consumers play a role in the information that is told. It could be argued that because the media only relays information it isn't actually important to the American political system, but when you look more closely at what and how this information affects voters as well as their elected officials, we can more clearly see its importance as a political institution. There's No Such Thing As An Unregulated Market

We all want the safety and dependable quality that “regulation” is supposed to provide. Government can provide it to some extent, but markets can do it better, if we let them. How to practice emotional first aid | Guy Winch

We'll go to the doctor when we feel flu-ish or a nagging pain. So why don’t we see a health professional when we feel emotional pain: guilt, loss, loneliness? Too many of us deal with common psychological-health issues on our own, says Guy Winch. But we don’t have to. He makes a compelling case to practice emotional hygiene — taking care of our emotions, our minds, with the same diligence we take care of our bodies. Neil deGrasse Tyson and panelists discuss de-extinction in the 2017 Isaac Asimov Memorial Debate at the American Museum of Natural History. The TRUTH about Fundrise Real Estate Investing

18:31
Fundrise. Real Estate Investing with some pretty substantial returns. Is it worth it? Is it legit? Should you invest in it? Here’s what I discovered. Enjoy! Add me on Snapchat/Instagram: GPStephan Join the private Real Estate Facebook Group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/therealestatemillionairemastermind/ The Real Estate Agent Academy: Learn how to start and grow your career as a Real Estate Agent to a Six-Figure Income, how to best build your network of clients, expand into luxury markets, and the exact steps I’ve used to grow my business from $0 to over $120 million in sales: https://goo.gl/UFpi4c Fundrise is a real estate investing service that allows you access to private market real estate deals that they say should “deliver superior risk-adjusted returns over time versus a portfolio of publicly traded stocks.” The biggest difference is that Fundrise is NOT publicly traded on a stock exchange, but they are publicly available. By being publicly available, this means that anyone can invest because they comply with the SEC disclosure regulations, and by doing so, they don’t limit themselves to accredited investors So there’s gotta be a catch, RIGHT? So I read through all 225 pages of their fine print. Here’s what I found. First concern is lack of liquidity. By investing through Fundrise, you’re pretty much tying up your money for 5 years. Even though they say that if you pull out your money prior to then at their redemption rate, which is 97% at its lowest - they still make it very clear there is no guaranteed return of your investment with no immediate plan to buy back your shares. As from their fine print: “If we do not successfully implement a liquidity transaction, you may have to hold your investment for an indefinite period.” It goes on to say “Fundrise Advisors, LLC, our wholly-owned subsidiary, has the authority, in its sole discretion, to limit redemptions by each shareholder during any quarter, including if the Manager deems such action to be in the best interest of the shareholders as a whole.” Second concern I have is their fees…which they say are 1% annually. This seems a bit high compared to other lower cost options, namely a Vanguard REIT - which charges 0.26% annually as a fee, or 74% LESS than FundRise. But, in FundRise’s defense, they’re a smaller company which invests in riskier assets that should generate higher returns to compensate to the higher fee. My third concern - and also a major reason I’d never invest in this - is that the dividends are taxes as ordinary income at your ordinary income rate. One of the many advantages of holding long term investments is capturing the long term capital gains tax rate - this is typically SIGNIFICANTLY lower than the tax rate for ordinary income. My fourth concern is how this investment will hold up in a down market. While I agree with their market strategy and can’t find any faults with where they’re investing, at some point there will be a plateau in growth, while these returns are possible NOW, I’m unsure how sustainable these are long term - and again, if you want to re-balance your portfolio, you may be stuck with your investment. And they very much acknowledge this in their fine print: “The significant growth we have experienced, particularly with respect to assets under management and revenues, will be difficult to sustain.” Fifth, I’m always a little hesitant about companies that give referral fees. While often it’s a nice gesture to give customers SOMETHING for referring business, and I totally agree with this business model, in the age of the internet, there will be people out there who will write falsely positive reviews just to get the referral bonus. When this happens, honest criticism becomes buried or harder to find. For someone wanting exposure to real estate, I believe there are many other REIT options out there that offer the liquidity and tax treatment that put you in a much better position, even if they’ll give you slightly lower returns. I’d rather sacrifice a percent or two JUST to have access to my money when I need it. So overall, no it’s not a scam - and there are some positives about what they’re doing - but from what I see, the downsides just outweigh the upside, rendering other options as more attractive when put side by side. Imagine this alternative could help millions of people quit smoking and came with only a fraction of the harmful chemicals that cigarettes do. Well, you don’t have to imagine it. It exists. E-cigarettes are the most innovative and promising smoking-cessation product yet invented. So, public health officials and anti-tobacco activists are all in favor of this life-saving innovation, right? Actually, they’re almost all totally against it. Why? Because, incredibly, they make no substantial distinction between e-cigarettes and real cigarettes -- even though they are completely different products. To begin with, e-cigarettes aren’t cigarettes. They contain no tobacco. Instead, a liquid containing nicotine derived from tobacco leaves is vaporized, and users of e-cigarettes inhale that vapor. Vapor, mind-you – not smoke. This is significant because the real harm from tobacco comes from the combustion process, which releases hundreds of toxic compounds known as tar. Since e-cigarettes have no tobacco and no combustion, they release no tar. This makes them, according to Britain’s Department of Health, at least 95% less harmful than tobacco cigarettes. E-cigarettes do contain nicotine, an addictive drug. However, there is little evidence that nicotine alone is bad for you, making it similar to, say, caffeine--a drug used every day by millions of people. Brad Rodu, an oral cancer specialist at the University of Louisville, put it this way: “I love coffee, and I’m sure I could get caffeine if I smoked my coffee beans…but I would be paying a much different price in overall health [if I did].” In other words, when it comes to addictive substances like caffeine or nicotine, it isn’t the addictive substance that’s harmful; it’s how it’s delivered. As South African psychiatrist Mike Russell said about cigarettes: “[People] smoke for [the] nicotine, but they die from the tar.” And again, there’s no tar in e-cigarettes. Does this all mean e-cigarettes are completely safe? Of course not. Nothing is completely safe. E-cigarettes are a relatively new innovation so more research is needed, especially on long-term effects. There’s also a place for sensible regulation to ensure consumer safety. But unlike normal everyday products, any potential risk posed by e-cigarettes is far outweighed by a real – not potential – good: saving lives by providing the nicotine that smokers enjoy without delivering the deadly toxins that can kill them. Many former smokers have successfully used e-cigarettes to help them kick their nicotine addiction altogether. A recent study in an Oxford Journal peer-reviewed publication, Nicotine and Tobacco Research, said that e-cigarettes could reduce smoking-related deaths by 21 percent. That’s thousands of lives every year. For the complete script, visit https://www.prageru.com/videos/whats-wrong-e-cigarettes

Small Town/Rural Land Use Policies and Public Health Outcomes Webinar

56:06
Communities across Ohio are realizing the significant impact that our built environments have on public health outcomes. Both built and natural environments are shaped by land use, or the policies and regulations communities use to manage their development. Communities can control land use through zoning regulations, building and maintaining transportation infrastructure, preserving or maintaining open space, or creating financial or policy incentives for certain types of development. These strategies are customized for specific land use contexts, such as major cities or rural areas. This webinar will examine public health challenges in small towns and rural areas and effective land use and design strategies that county, township, and village governments use to improve health outcomes. Health professionals, planners, policymakers, and transportation professionals are encouraged to register. Recorded: May 22, 2019

It is part of the innate immune system,[1] which is not adaptable and does not change over the course of an individual's lifetime. It can be recruited and brought into action by the adaptive immune system. The complement system consists of a number of small proteins found in the blood, in general synthesized by the liver, and normally circulating as inactive precursors (pro-proteins). When stimulated by one of several triggers, proteases in the system cleave specific proteins to release cytokines and initiate an amplifying cascade of further cleavages. The end result of this complement activation or complement fixation cascade is stimulation of phagocytes to clear foreign and damaged material, proxy inflammation to attract additional phagocytes, and activation of the cell-killing membrane attack complex. Over 30 proteins and protein fragments make up the complement system, including serum proteins, serosal proteins, and cell membrane receptors. They account for about 10% of the globulin fraction of blood serum and can serve as opsonins.[citation needed] Three biochemical pathways activate the complement system: the classical complement pathway, the alternative complement pathway, and the lectin pathway. Most of the proteins and glycoproteins that constitute the complement system are synthesized by hepatocytes. But significant amounts are also produced by tissue macrophages, blood monocytes, and epithelial cells of the genitourinal tract and gastrointestinal tract. The three pathways of activation all generate homologous variants of the protease C3-convertase. The classical complement pathway typically requires antigen—antibody complexes (immune complexes) for activation (specific immune response), whereas the alternative pathway can be activated by C3 hydrolysis, foreign material, pathogens, or damaged cells. The mannose-binding lectin pathway can be activated by C3 hydrolysis or antigens without the presence of antibodies (non-specific immune response). In all three pathways, C3-convertase cleaves and activates component C3, creating C3a and C3b, and causes a cascade of further cleavage and activation events. C3b binds to the surface of pathogens, leading to greater internalization by phagocytic cells by opsonization. In the alternative pathway, C3b binds to Factor B. Factor D releases Factor Ba from Factor B bound to C3b. The complex of C3b(2)Bb is a protease which cleaves C5 into C5b and C5a. C5 convertase is also formed by the Classical Pathway when C3b binds C4b and C2a. C5a is an important chemotactic protein, helping recruit inflammatory cells. C3a is the precursor of an important cytokine (adipokine) named ASP (although this is not universally accepted [6]) and is usually rapidly cleaved by carboxypeptidase B. Both C3a and C5a have anaphylatoxin activity, directly triggering degranulation of mast cells as well as increasing vascular permeability and smooth muscle contraction.[6] C5b initiates the membrane attack pathway, which results in the membrane attack complex (MAC), consisting of C5b, C6, C7, C8, and polymeric C9.[7] MAC is the cytolytic endproduct of the complement cascade; it forms a transmembrane channel, which causes osmotic lysis of the target cell. Kupffer cells and other macrophage cell types help clear complement-coated pathogens. As part of the innate immune system, elements of the complement cascade can be found in species earlier than vertebrates; most recently in the protostome horseshoe crab species, putting the origins of the system back further than was previously thought. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- CHECK OUT NEWEST VIDEO: "Nucleic acids - DNA and RNA structure " https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lZRAShqft0 -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

The Senseless Ambiguity of North American Turn Signals

13:43
There are studies linked below that demonstrate a tangible safety benefit of amber turn signals. You might want to check them out. Though it might be small, the benefit is demonstrably there. This has always bugged me, and no one talks about it. Our automotive lighting regulations in North America are stupid when it comes to tail lights. This video is about what is stupid, why it’s stupid, and what we could do about it. Here are some studies showing that amber turn signals are indeed safer: The following NHTSA study found between a 3 and 28% decrease in liklihood of collision with amber turn signals, although it acknowledges that some of this may have been related to simply having a separate indicator for braking and turning and not explicitly the color; https://www.nhtsa.gov/sites/nhtsa.dot.gov/files/documents/811_037.pdf This study showed a significant descrease in reaction time to a brake signal when the vehicle is fitted with amber turn signals--partially explained by “Specifically, the subjects knew whether the red or the yellow turn signals were to be expected”. This suggests that the design should make clear even when the lights aren’t lit that there is a separate indicator for a turn signal. https://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/handle/2027.42/64041/86955.pdf;sequence=1 And wouldn’t ya know it, the IIHS has done some research. It’s a shame they aren’t making a bigger fuss about this: http://www.iihs.org/iihs/sr/statusreport/article/44/8/3 You can support this channel on Patreon! Chicago N. America Bitcoin Conference - Philanthropy, Emerging Markets & Regulation

Superintendent of Financial Services for New York, Ben Lawsky, has issued his proposed regulations for a Bitlicence governing Bitcoin businesses. I've warned people repeatedly about the fact that regulators are not our friends -- so the onerous proposal came as no surprise. Many Bitcoiners seemed shocked and caught off guard that the proposal could be so unrealistically strict. Some examples include Bitcoin companies being unable to retain profits in Bitcoin, requirements that small startups hire expensive compliance personnel, requirements that inventors and programmers obtain a license before creating new alt coins, rules which would essentially end mining etc. The regulations are at the core a thinly veiled ban of Bitcoin in New York. These actions didn't surprise me at all. Mr. Lawsky has proven himself to be a corrupt and dishonest political manipulator who is a clear enemy of progress, innovation and this community. So why engage him? (Definitions: Dishonest: not being truthful (eg: claiming he had no knowledge of Charlie Shrem's arrest timing then using it as political theater during his hearings, claiming he would carefully evaluate input from the Bitcoin space then not doing so etc.) Corrupt: dealing in a dishonest manner for personal gain (eg: working with bank cronies to further protectionist policies which greatly harm jobs and Bitcoin, pushing policies which do not have a primary goal of serving the public good....etc.) Political manipulator: using political tactics, media, duplicity, political theater (such as invoking events like the tragedy of 9-11 -which was mentioned in the hearings- and fears of terrorism as the justification for these anti innovation actions when, in reality, all Bitcoin on planet earth has only a fraction of the value we know with certainty was laundered by HSBC for example) Furthermore, his power does not come from competence, knowledge or even an election but from threats of violence. Lets be honest, without the threat of violence (his threat of using his power as an unelected political official to place people in jail for use of math) he would have no standing in this space and most Bitcoin people would have never even heard of him. If Mr. Lawsky had to let his ideas stand on their own merit without force and violence he would be laughed out of every Bitcoin meeting with his proposal that Satoshi should have had a license before inventing a coin. Instead of laughing at him we've made him famous in this community and look to him as some sort of leader simply because he has threatened us with violence. So why deal with him? The extreme and damaging Bitlicence proposal shows that he has no intention of operating in an honorable, fair or even remotely logical manner. Why spend time spinning wheels in an attempt to use logic to show the reasons his plans are bad when he clearly does not care about the merit of his plans? Bitcoin leaders keep seeming to be holding out hope that with just one more white paper or one more AMA or one more legal letter we can get him to see the light. He does not care about right or wrong. He cares about fame and personal gain and his political career and helping his banking cronies by harming Bitcoin. By engaging him we only further this harm. THE ALTERNATIVE What do I propose instead? I do not believe it productive to engage with someone who wishes us ill and who has shown no intention to operate honestly or with reason or the most basic logic. I think that all of the significant advocacy efforts wasted on engaging with Lawsky should be instead spent on PRODUCTIVE activities which are actually likely to yield positive results.
