beneath the surface COMMUNITY SOLUTIONS FOR THE GLOBAL MINING THREAT Project Vision: Preventing Human Rights Abuses Related to Mining The objective of this multi-‐year project is to build a multimedia toolkit that educates, empowers, and connects communities impacted by extractive industries. The toolkit aims to stop human rights abuses before they occur and to put communities in a strong position to protect their rights and fight for justice. The project uses videos to share stories and practical advice from communities already impacted by mining with communities where mining will soon occur. These stories will form the foundation of a video toolkit that provides communities with strategies and techniques for protecting their rights, and inspires them to action. Cutting Edge Tools for Community Organizations All videos will be published with a facilitator’s guide to help maximize the impact of video screenings and support communities in taking meaningful action. Videos will be distributed on DVDs, USBs, and online, along with links to relevant guides and further information on key topics and strategies covered in the videos. Key partners will also be provided with projection equipment and hands-‐on training to launch their grassroots distribution program. Video Collection: Year 1 ● The Impacts of Mining (Peru, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe) ● Baseline Data and Environmental Monitoring (Nigeria) ● Community Mapping and Resistance to Mining (Ghana) ● Building a Resistance Movement (Peru, forthcoming) ● Negotiating for Environmental Protections (Bolivia, forthcoming) ● Resettlement and Relocation (Zimbabwe, forthcoming) Iteration & Year 2 The second phase of our project emphasizes distribution, feedback, and iteration. We will hold special screenings with target audiences in Haiti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and other countries where mining poses an imminent threat. We are also seeking feedback from experts and practitioners on how to improve the content, and our distribution and implementation strategy. Get Involved! If you’re interested in collaborating on the project, hosting a screening, or providing advice or feedback, please contact Jessie Landerman at [email protected]

Find more effects of mining right here: http://www.buzzle.com/articles/how-does-mining-affect-the-environment.html Mining is the source of all the substances that cannot be obtained by industrial processes or through agriculture. Mining and the Social Sciences - Panel Discussion
The social sciences have an important role to play in understanding mining’s impact on people and place, and its effect on different types of social systems and processes. The panel will provide a range of perspectives about how social scientists can shine a light on the mining industry, and its activities and impacts. By developing a deeper understanding of the mining industry’s broad reach, and by engaging diverse stakeholder groups, new perspectives about mining’s role in society can emerge. This event is hosted by SMI's Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining, the Centre's Director Professor Deanna Kemp will facilitate the discussion. PANEL Adjunct Professor Anthony (Tony) Hodge - Former President of the International Council on Mining and Metals, currently at the Robert M. Buchan Department of Mining Engineering, Queen’s University, Kingston, Canada. Dr Sarah Holcombe - Senior Research Fellow at the CSRM. Sarah is a social anthropologist with 20 years’ experience working in Aboriginal Australia within NGOs, including the 2 major Northern Territory Land Councils. Anthony (Tony) Kelly - Tony was senior lecturer in Community Work at The University of Queensland for over 20 years and has worked as a consultant to government, corporations and NGO’s in ways of working with communities. The Impact of Mining on Women
The Marikana massacre most certainly turned the spotlight on the women in mining communities by bringing into sharp focus the challenges facing the widows of the slain mineworkers. Fazila Farouk of SACSIS talks to Samantha Hargreaves of Womin about the broader impact of mining on women in mining communities and learns about land grabs, water grabs and the health impacts of environmental degradation and water pollution, which create an additional burden for the women behind the mineworkers. Women in mining communities, both within sender communities and recipient communities, are often also engaged in unpaid labour that subsidises the profits of big mining companies. The negative impacts of mining well outweigh any social responsibility investments made by mining corporations, contends Hargreaves. For a transcript of this interview please visit the SACSIS website at http://sacsis.co.za/site/article/1818.

MINE 391/486 Mining and Environment, Prof Marcello Vei
The UBC (University of British Columbia, Canada) professor Marcello Veiga sings parodies in his Mining and Environment (MINE 391) students to explain the environmental and social effects of mining and he claims that new miners must change their attitudes..This is a parody telling the story of a irresponsible miner who believes that he can extract gold using mercury and dunmp everything in the rivers because nobody is watching him in a remote site in the North of Canada. The song stresses that if you don't know how to do responsibly...just don't mine it. At the end of the course, the students have to sing parodies related to the environmental impacts of mining. This is a talent show and the winner receives $ 1000.
