This presentation was part of the 2014 EERI Technical Seminar Series: Performance Based Design: State of Practice for Tall Buildings (San Francisco, 10/29/2014) For the last decade, engineers in major cities along the West Coast have taken advantage of performance based design concepts to achieve structural designs of tall buildings that are not in strict compliance with the International Building Code prescriptive provisions. The speakers in this seminar have all been at the forefront of the evolution of performance based design procedures, whether in industry or academia, and through this seminar series have presented their experiences and state of the art practice in their individual areas of specialization. Funding for the 2014 EERI Technical Seminar Series was provided under a cooperative agreement (EMW-2013-CA-K00164) with FEMA/U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

David Billington, Gordon Y.S. Wu Professor of Engineering and emeritus professor of civil and environmental Engineering, reflects upon his personal and professional experiences with Fazlur Khan in this lecture titled "Personal and Professional Reflections about a Great Engineer." Khan was a structural engineer who significantly advanced the design of urban buildings and is most famous for his designs of the John Hancock Center and Willis (formerly Sears) Tower. Khan is the subject of an exhibition at Princeton's Engineering Library in the Friend Center that was curated by Maria E. Moreyra Garlock, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering, and Sigrid Adriaenssens, assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering. The lecture and accompanying exhibit commemorate 10 years since the tragic events of September 11 by honoring Khan's contributions to the engineering profession of building design. This collection of talks on skyscrapers includes interviews with three giants in the field of structural engineering -- Bill Baker, Leslie Robertson, and Guy Nordenson -- as well as a lecture by David Billington on Fazlur Khan. These experts hold forth a wide range of subjects, from design inspiration to sustainability to cultural differences in building. These talks were sponsored by Princeton's department of civil and environmental engineering.

This video elucidates the basic of structural engineering works and overview of roles,responsibilities , skills, perks and future of structural engineering. (Structural engineering) Structural engineering is core branch of civil engineering, in which structural engineers are trained, understand, Evaluate, and calculate the stability, strength and rigidity of built structures, for buildings and nonbuilding structures in order to make structure impregnable. It is the responsibility of the structural engineer to develop designs and integrate their design with that of other designers, and to supervise construction of projects on site. They can also be involved in the design of machinery, medical equipment, and vehicles where structural integrity affects functioning and safety. ( Profession ) Structural engineers are responsible for engineering design and analysis. Entry-level structural engineers may design the individual elements of a structure and that is the beams, columns, and floors of a building. More experienced engineers may be responsible for the structural design and integrity of an entire system, such as a building. Structural engineers often specialize in particular fields, such as bridge engineering, building engineering, pipeline engineering, industrial structures, or special mechanical structures such as vehicles, ships or aircraft. (Qualification) Most structural-engineering jobs require at least a bachelor’s degree in engineering. Many employers, particularly those that offer engineering consulting services, also require certification as a professional engineer. A master’s degree is often required for promotion to management, and ongoing education and training are needed to keep up with advances in technology, materials, and computer hardware and software and government regulations. (Future) The U.S. Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS) states that employment of civil engineers is projected to grow 8 percent from 2014 to 2024 about as fast as the average for all occupations. Having good grades from a highly rated institution should give a job seeker an advantage over the competition. As infrastructure continues to age, civil engineers will be needed to manage projects to rebuild bridges, repair roads, and upgrade levees and dams as well as airports and building structures of all types. Structural analysis performed by ASI in conjunction with INACHUS FP7 Project providing USaR with better tools for the location and rescue of survivors in collapsed structures. Software Used: Extreme Loading for Structures (http://www.extremeloading.com) is an advanced non-linear structural analysis software tool designed specifically for structural engineers. ELS allows structural engineers to study the 3D behavior of structures through both the continuum and discrete stages of loading. This includes static and dynamic loads such as those generated by a blast, seismic events, impact, progressive collapse, and the wind. Unlike many structural analysis software tools which are based on the Finite Element Method (FEM), ELS utilizes a non-linear solver based on the Applied Element Method (AEM). This allows ELS is to automatically analyze structural behavior during elastic and inelastic modes including the automatic yielding of reinforcement, detection, and generation of plastic hinges, buckling & post-buckling, crack propagation, membrane action & P-Delta effect, and separation of elements. The resulting debris and impacts with structural elements are also automatically analyzed and stress redistribution is inherently calculated. Structural engineering is a specialized branch of civil engineering that entails analyzing and designing structures -- things like buildings, bridges and even concert stages. Engineering is a big discipline that involves a systematic approach to designing solutions to problems experienced in the real world. There are many different fields of engineering, like mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, chemical engineering and systems engineering. And within these categories there are various subcategories-- and structural engineering is a subcategory of civil engineering. Transcript Ever wonder how tall buildings can withstand windy days, or why bridges don't collapse when large trucks drive over them? The answer is structural engineering. Structural engineers use physics and math to design and analyze the sturdiness of structures, things like bridges, buildings, concert stages, and even roller coasters. Don't get me wrong. Designing any one of these things can involve multiple types of engineering, but it's structural engineering that's responsible for making sure that that structure won't collapse or fall over. You see, a structure must be able to handle the forces or loads that it's likely to experience. Take a skyscraper, for example. It not only has to support itself, but also all the people and furniture inside the building, and then external factors, like wind, snow, or an earthquake. The materials and geometry that make up a structure influence how it may respond to those forces. Different materials have different properties, like strength, weight, and flammability, that can influence a structure's sturdiness. For example, steel is generally stronger, and weighs more than wood, and different geometric shapes work better for different purposes. For example, a square or rectangular base can typically hold more weight than a triangular base. Structural engineers perform calculations to determine the best materials and shapes to use in order to build a study structure. The next time you find yourself at the top of a roller coaster, you can thank structural engineers for doing their part to make sure it's nice and sturdy.
