Learning Chinese is hard enough as-is. Finding quality resources shouldn't add to that burden. Over the years, I've found resources that were complete failures and that were gold-mines, which is what I'll be talking about here. iChineseReader The Ultimate Digital Reading Resources for Chinese Learners

02:09:34
This 2-hour webinar is to introduce to you the powerful new features of the upgraded version of iChineseReader (爱读) and learn how to make use of it to benefit your students and teaching. The very nature of Chinese, a pictographic language with its writing and pronunciation independent from each other (语和文相对独立), determines that meaningful reading in the language is more circumscribed than in its Western alphabetic counterparts by reader's actual level of vocabulary and proficiency. To a L2 learner, a Chinese character is simply an undecipherable picture without having actually learned it. Thus Chinese reading materials can hardly of any help in language classes unless they are appropriate and relevant to the proficiency level and curriculum contents of the targeted users. In light of this, the new version, apart from the original 1000+ authentic books for extensive interest reading, offers: • 400+ leveled texts by experienced classroom teachers, spanning 20 levels and categorized under the 15 thematic topics and sub-tropics of the AP Chinese Tests; • 300+ reading passages tailored to the core knowledge areas covered by K-5 Chinese Immersion Curriculum required by the Common Core States Standards. • eQuizzes, printable worksheets and benchmark reading assessment to be integrated with your Chinese curriculum to offer differentiated instructions. This webinar will be composed of three sections. Chelsea Li, project manager of iChineseReader (爱读) and a former High school Chinese teacher, will introduce the new functions and features of the platform. Ying Jin, an experienced Chinese teacher from Cupertino High School, will demonstrate her effective strategies of using iChineseReader (爱读) to improve students' reading skills in Chinese as a foreign language classes from Beginner to AP levels. Alice Kuang, a Mandarin and English bi-literacy teacher in Mandarin immersion programs, will show you how classroom teachers can use Running Records from iChineseReader (爱读) to record and monitor what progress students are making, and to quickly determine a starting place for students to begin selecting books to read independently, as well as how to take, score and interpret reliable records.

The Case of Unequal Distribution of Educational Resources and Poverty in Rural Chinese Schools

06:01
This multimodal media production (MMP) examines the issue of the unequal distribution of educational resources in China’s primary education. Schools in remote rural regions are lack of instructional equipment, technology supports and teaching staff. Some students there have great difficulty getting to schools due to poor infrastructure and severe natural environment, and as “left behind kids”, many receive very little care or attention. In stark contrast, children in affluent regions enjoy abundant opportunities and advanced education. Therefore, this product seeks to showcase such growing inequality and call for attention and resolutions towards it. In the media product, possible causes of the problem like lack of educational funding, poor economic status, poor infrastructure, shortage of assistance from outside, and very limited teacher education program available, are carefully analyzed. To help deal with the problem of unfairness, the researcher looks into the achievement of “PROJECT HOPE” initiated in early 1990s by Chinese government, which aims to help protect the schooling and education rights of children in rural regions. Then, practicable strategies are put forward. It is suggested that the government should allocate continually large sums of money to promote primary education in rural areas. Some advanced teaching tools, classroom supplies, and more books should be offered. Transportation is another critical aspect that needs to be taken care of. Besides, more teacher education programs should be provided. PTA is a necessity as well. Lastly, the researcher’s personal participation and plans for getting involved in helping solve the problem are discussed.

Environment in India and China: Innovations Part 1 | The New School

01:37:23
Though China and India are known for their explosive growth rates and impressive achievements in social and economic development, much of the world continues to watch with apprehension as growing industry in both nations degrades natural resources and ecosystems. The New School's India China Institute (ICI) will address issues of resource management and environmental sustainability at a conference entitled The Environment in India and China: Histories and Innovation. "We are proud to host such distinguished experts to contribute to our understanding of how to create a sustainable environment in the world's fastest growing economies," said ICI Director Ashok Gurung. "This conference draws on the interdisciplinary nature of The New School, and gives opportunity for scholars and activists alike to combine theory and research with real-world situations." The conference has three themes, Ecology,History and Innovation. For the first theme, the concept of ecology is analyzed through meaning, metaphors and models in order to better understand the interaction of markets with state policies and the ecosystem. The second theme, history, will focus on changing environmental views of each region and the local beliefs towards the natural world. Finally, in the innovation section, speakers will explore the ways individuals and groups engage with growing environmental problems by creating or refurbishing new technological and organizational systems. Dambisa Moyo on 'Winner Take All: China's race for resources and what it means for us' | 27.06.2012

01:21:20
Our planet's resources are running out. Nations are competing over increasingly scarce commodities: oil, food and water. Shortages mean dizzying price rises. Meanwhile, China has embarked on one of the greatest commodity rushes in history. In Winner Take All Dambisa shows how this scramble for resources threatens world stability and discusses what action is needed for a just, balanced and peaceful global economy. Dambisa Moyo is the critically acclaimed author of How The West Was Lost and Dead Aid. She was chosen as one of Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2009. She holds a PhD in Economics from Oxford University and a Masters from Harvard University Kennedy School of Government, and has worked at the World Bank and Goldman Sachs. She was born and raised in Lusaka, Zambia.

How can such wanton generosity be allowed?” - law professor, Xu Zhangrun. China has just offered Africa another $60 billion for emerging economic developments, but is this a slight of hand aimed at funnelling out the continent’s resources, or is it a sincere gesture of assistance? South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa, has vehemently denied accusations insinuating Chinese neo-colonialism taking root in Africa. Even Chinese President, Xi Jinping, rebuked the notion of ulterior motives, telling African leaders his country’s investments in the continent have “no political strings attached”. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you feel good, please support the author by subscribing to our channel to track the next video. Part 1- Introduction to Chinese Characters

10:04
[CC] English subtitles [CC] 開啟字幕 www.ABCsOfChinese.com All 100,000 Chinese characters are merely different combinations of 400 simple pictographs and ideographs (think Egyptian hieroglyphs). In order to rapidly learn Chinese characters and successfully retain them, the secret is to first thoroughly master these 400 basic pictographic components! Our radical approach ("部首", ha ha) to quickly mastering copious amounts of Chinese characters is this: Learn the basic pictographic components 幺 艹 白 木 before attempting to the learn the Chinese character 藥. Consider for a moment that in chemistry you learn the basic elements of the periodic table before learning more complex compounds. Similarly, in phonetic languages like English you learn the basic phonetic symbols A B C before you learn a complex word like "medicine". Our online curriculum utilizes this same logical "building block" methodology to learn Chinese characters. Try it out for FREE at www.ABCsOfChinese.com
