Explore the beauty of the radio spectrum as well as show how radio frequency engineering is at the heart of solving many of the world’s grand challenges. Professor Danielle George is Associate Dean for Teaching and Learning in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, and a Professor in the Microwave and Communications Systems research group at the University of Manchester. She completed her BSc in Astrophysics, MSc in Radio Astronomy at The Victoria University of Manchester based at Jodrell Bank Observatory, and her PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with UMIST. She worked at Jodrell Bank Observatory as a senior Radio Frequency Engineer until 2006 when she too up a lectureship post in the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. She was awarded a Professorship earlier this year at the age of 38. Danielle’s expertise in radio frequency and microwave communications has a wide range of applications across a number of industries. To date most of her research and development work has been carried out on a variety of aspects relating to ultra-low noise receivers for Space and Aerospace applications. She is involved in the $1B astronomical instrument, the Square Kilometer Array (SKA), is the UK lead for amplifiers for the $1B Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) telescope and has worked with NASA and ESA on the development of instrumentation for researchers exploring the Big Bang. She has worked with agriculturists on the development of instrumentation to measure water usage, and with a number of multi-national companies such as Rolls Royce where she worked on industrial gas turbine engines. She thoroughly enjoys the teaching aspects of her career and lectures to both undergraduates and postgraduate students, in particular Electronic Circuit Design to undergraduates and Microwave Systems to MSc students. She is passionate about raising public awareness of the positive impact engineering has on all aspects of our everyday lives and highlighting to young people the immense depth and breadth of opportunities a career in engineering can offer. The middle one of three sisters, Danielle grew up in Newcastle where her parents still live. Fascinated by science from an early age, she was given a telescope by her parents when she was eight years’ old and would regularly get up in the middle of the night to watch lunar eclipse. She credits this experience as the moment she first realized how physics and mathematics could be applied in a practical sense outside the classroom and as the first step on her path to her current career. She now lives in Manchester with her husband, Richard, and daughter, Elizabeth.

The science has further opened up the realm of instrumentation engineering. Instrumentation is a multi-disciplinary stream and covers subjects from various branches such as chemical, mechanical, electrical, electronics and computers. Instrumentation engineering is a specialized branch of electrical and electronic engineering and it deals with measurement, control and automation of processes. Apart from covering core subjects such as industrial instrumentation and process control, bio-medical instrumentation and robotics, the students deal with software and hardware topics such as microprocessor and micro controller based instrumentation, VLSI and embedded system designs, computer architecture and organisation and computer control of processes. Computer languages such as ‘C' and C++ are also part of the curriculum. This makes an instrumentation engineer fit for both the hardware and the software industry. Moreover, since instrumentation engineers are presumed to be good at solving problems, the analytical ability is expected to be on the higher side, which is a basic quality needed to excel in the software industry. Do you want to know the difference between noise figure and noise factor? Do you wonder how to diagnose and solve radio interference problems? If you have questions about how to make good radio spectrum measurements or how to diagnose interference problems, you will find the answers in the NTIA Seminar Series on Spectrum Measurement Theory and Techniques. In this series of talks, an NTIA engineer at the Institute for Telecommunication Sciences (ITS) laboratory in Boulder, CO, discusses the fundamentals of radio spectrum measurements. The speaker, Frank Sanders, who has nearly thirty years of experience in this field, recognizes that even for many engineers who routinely use spectrum analyzers, the fundamentals of how they work and how to use them may be a bit murky; even in university lab classes the instructors do not always understand these machines very well themselves. Most of the talks, which are 80-100 minutes long, are divided into two parts. In the first portion of each video, Sanders explores a particular aspect of radio spectrum measurement technique or theory with a whiteboard lecture. In the second part, the lessons of the whiteboard discussion are implemented with actual measurement hardware and radio signals. A few of the talks, which for example involve large numbers of photographs of radar systems, are videos of his Microsoft Powerpoint presentations. In this series, Sanders explains spectrum analyzer functionality in terms of convolution bandwidth and shows how, when convolution is understood along with the mechanics of analyzer design, spectrum analyzer operations and outputs become easy to understand and use. Other topics include (1) what you need to know to use spectrum analyzers to examine all types of radio signals, including mobile radios, radars, and digital data links; (2) the use of low noise amplifiers and how to specify the right gain and noise figure for your receiver and measurement applications; (3) how radar systems work, and how to understand and interpret the signals that you see coming from radars; (4) the ways that radio interference can occur; (5) a methodical approach for diagnosing and solving radio interference problems; (6) the math needed to convert spectrum analyzer measurements into field strengths of radio signals; and (7) the proper conversions for radiation hazard calculations.

Now, I am going to demonstrate the ASK demodulation and analysis function of GSP-9300 spectrum analyzer. This demo kit is an ASK and FSK signal generator. In this demo kit, there are three preset frequency, three Baud rates and selectable continuous or burst output mode. First of all, connect demo kit with the USB port located at the front panel of GSP-9300. Next, connect demo kit output terminal with GSP-9300 input terminal with SMA RF cable. 1. To begin the operation, first, input demo kit parameters. 2. Press option control key, demo kit (F4) key, demo kit (F1) key twice to activate demo kit 3. Press modulation (F2) key and select ASK (F1) key 4. Press frequency (F3) key and select 433 MHz (F2) key 5. Press Baud rate (F5) key and select baud rate of 4800 (F1) key 6. Press output mode (F6) key and select binary code 10101010,and Seq5(F7) 7. This is the end of demo kit parameters input. Next, set up the ASK demodulation & analysis function to observe ASK signals. 8. Press frequency key, center freq (F1) key, input 4, 3, 2, dot, 9, 9, 2 MHz (F2) key to set center frequency as 432.992 kHz. 9. Press span key, span (F1) key, input 5, 0, 0, kHz (F3) key to set frequency bandwidth as 500kHz. 10. Now, ASK signals are shown on the screen. 11. The Department of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement program (ARM) has more than thirty radars spread around the world at three permanent and three mobile sites. These radars come from different manufacturers and operate at different frequencies. This presents some challenges when it comes to monitoring the performance of the entire radar network by the relatively small team. To help with this situation, the radar engineering team has designed a platform for monitoring of multiple instruments at geographically remote sites. This platform, the Watchdog for ARM Radar Network Operations (WARNO), is a multi-level distributed open source set of software that monitors hundreds of different streams of data on each radar. Each installation of WARNO has an extensible and configurable plugin architecture that allows for easy modification of data collection without the need to modify the core code. Each distributed installation communicates with a central monitoring server that accumulates all of the data from each radar installation for ease of comparison. There is an additional plugin architecture for data analytics that allows for higher-level feature detection, as well as warn-on-alarm type features. Data is presented through a robust web interface capable of plotting and statistics on the data, as well as user-based customization. WARNO is written in Python, although plugins can be written in multiple languages.
