Jason Zweig: "The Devil's Financial Dictionary and The Intelligent Investor" | Talks at Google

01:07:25
Jason Zweig will discuss his latest book, The Devil's Financial Dictionary, and how he went about distilling everything he had learned in almost three decades as an investing journalist into definitions of Wall Street terms that are, in many cases, only a few words long. Markets are driven much more by psychology and history than by economics. In writing The Devil's Financial Dictionary, Zweig was guided largely by a saying of his father's: "It's remarkable how much you have to learn in order to realize how little you need to know." “This is the most amusing presentation of the principles of finance that I have ever seen.” —Robert J. Shiller, professor of finance, Yale University; Nobel laureate in economics; author of Irrational Exuberance “Part social commentary, part instruction manual, Zweig’s book is must-reading for anyone who presumes or desires to understand the investment world…. Like the book in which they’re contained, each of Zweig’s entries is pointed, witty, and revealing of important and useful truths. The Devil himself, a.k.a., [Ambrose] Bierce, would be proud.” —TIME About the Author Jason Zweig writes a weekly column, "The Intelligent Investor," for The Wall Street Journal. He is the author of The Devil's Financial Dictionary, a satirical glossary of financial terms; Your Money and Your Brain, on the neuroscience and psychology of financial decision-making; and The Little Book of Safe Money, an investing guide. The editor of the revised edition of Benjamin Graham's The Intelligent Investor and co-editor of Benjamin Graham: Building a Profession, Zweig also assisted the Nobel Prize-winning psychologist Daniel Kahneman in writing his book, Thinking, Fast and Slow. Before joining The Wall Street Journal, Zweig worked at Money, Forbes and TIME.

He was also the mentor and professor of well-known billionaire investor, Warren Buffett. The 2006 revised edition of the book ‘The Intelligent Investor’ has added commentary by Jason Zweig, a famous wall-street investor and editor. These added commentaries are used to relate the Graham’s idea to the present world. It highlights that the book has time-tested techniques. The book has over 600 pages (although originally around 500 page but the added commentaries in revised edition increased the width of the book) Warren Buffett (worth over 73.1 billion dollars) says- ‘This book is by far the best book on investing ever written’. Needless to mention that this book is Warren Buffett’s all time favourite. He also admitted that the book helped him in developing conceptual framework for his future investments and capital allocations. Further, he made the following remarks about the book in its preface:  Investing doesn’t require a stratospheric IQ, unusual business insights, or inside information. What’s needed is a sound intellectual framework for making decisions and the ability to keep emotions from corroding that framework. This book precisely and clearly prescribes the proper framework.  Pay special attention to chapters 8 & 20.  Outstanding results are based on three things – Effort, Research, amplitudes of market (This book will allow you to profit from them, not participate) The Intelligent investor by Benjamin Graham book has a number of great concepts and a must read for all the stock market investors. The first few chapters of the book are dedicated to the general concepts of market. As the book was originally written in 1949, the book has lots of details about the bonds, preferred stocks & inflation. The next few chapters describe the methods to analyze stocks, concerning balance sheet, cash flow etc. The second half of the book is of more importance for the stock investors as it explains the different strategies of the defensive & enterprising investors, along with chapters on management, dividend policy and case studies. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Declaration: No copyright image or music has been used on this channel. Security Analysis By Benjamin Graham | Animated Book Summary

09:07
Security Analysis has been continuously in print for more than sixty years. No investment book in history had either the immediate impact, or the long-term relevance and value, of its first edition in 1934. By 1951, seventeen years past its original publication and more than a decade beyond its revised and acclaimed 1940 second edition, authors Benjamin Graham and David Dodd had seen business and investment markets travel from the depths of Depression to the heights of recovery, and had observed investor behavior during both the calm of peacetime and the chaos of World War II. The prescient thinking and insight displayed by Graham and Dodd in the first two editions of Security Analysis reached new heights in the third edition. In words that could just as easily have been written today as fifty years ago, they detail techniques and strategies for attaining success as individual investors, as well as the responsibilities of corporate decision makers to build shareholder value and transparency for those investors. =================================================== 💰Get a Coinbase Wallet! - https://www.coinbase.com/join/5a4bf25... The Intelligent Investor by Ben Graham - Animated

05:39
This book contains a lot, but I think the key takeaways from it are: 1. Decide whether you are an enterprising (active) or defensive (passive) investor. Don't try operate in a middle ground because that is where people get killed. 2. Invest with a margin of safety 3. Mr. Market is there to serve you 4. Investing is most intelligent when it is most businesslike.

BRK Shareholders Panel (Part 1): "Why did you buy Berkshire Hathaway stock?"

12:57
About the Subject Warren Buffett took the helm of Berkshire Hathaway in 1964, when its book value per share was $19.46 and its intrinsic value per share was far lower. Today, its book value per share is around $155,501* and its intrinsic value is far higher. The growth rate in book value per share during that period is 19.2%*compounded annually. From “The Essays of Warren Buffett: Lessons for Corporate America” (Third Edition) By Lawrence A. Cunningham, Warren E. Buffett * Updated from Berkshire Hathaway 2015 annual report About the Speakers Paul Lountzis serves as President of Lountzis Asset Management, LLC, which he founded in 2000 and is based in Wyomissing, PA. He has more than 25 years experience in the investment industry, beginning his career with Royce & Associates, a New York City-based investment advisory firm managing the Royce Mutual funds. Mr. Lountzis spent nine years – the last five as a partner – at Ruane, Cunniff & Goldfarb, Inc., an investment advisory firm managing more than $9 billion, including the Sequoia Mutual Fund. At Ruane, Cunniff & Goldfarb, Inc., Bill Ruane assigned him to conduct a number of specific research projects for the consideration of Warren E. Buffett, Chairman and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, Inc. Thomas Russo commits capital to leading global consumer products companies whose brands enjoy growing market shares in parts of the world undergoing economic growth and enjoying increasing political stability. He prefers companies with sufficient cash flows from existing operations, combined with balance-sheet strength, to allow investments to activate emerging markets. He backs rare management teams willing to invest to secure robust future returns even when such investments burden current reported profits. Mr. Russo believes that family-controlled companies are often uniquely well positioned to bear burdens on reported profits in pursuit of long-term gains. Accordingly, he often invests in public companies where founding families still retain control and significant investment exposure, to reduce management agency costs and to align owner interests. As a Managing Member of Gardner Russo & Gardner LLC, Mr. Russo oversees Semper Vic Partnerships, as well as separately managed accounts. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College and Stanford Business and Law Schools. Memberships include Dean’s Advisory Council for Stanford Law School, Dartmouth College’s President’s Leadership Council, Heilbrunn Center for Graham & Dodd Investing (Columbia), Facing History and Ourselves and Storm King Art Center. Whitney Tilson is the Founder and Managing Partner of Kase Capital Management, which manages three value-oriented hedge funds. He is also the co-founder of Value Investor Insight, an investment newsletter. Mr. Tilson has co-authored two books, The Art of Value Investing: How the World's Best Investors Beat the Market and More Mortgage Meltdown: 6 Ways to Profit in These Bad Times. He was one of the authors of Poor Charlie’s Almanack, the definitive book on Berkshire Hathaway Vice Chairman Charlie Munger, and has written for Forbes, the Financial Times, Kiplinger’s, the Motley Fool and TheStreet.com. He was named by Institutional Investor in 2007 as one of 20 Rising Stars, has appeared dozens of times on CNBC, Bloomberg TV and Fox Business Network, was on the cover of the July 2007 Kiplinger’s, has been profiled by the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post, and has spoken widely on value investing and behavioral finance. Mr. Tilson received an MBA with High Distinction from the Harvard Business School, where he was elected a Baker Scholar, and graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College with a bachelor’s degree in Government. Jason Zweig (moderator) is the investing and personal finance columnist for The Wall Street Journal. He is the author of The Devil’s Financial Dictionary, a satirical glossary of Wall Street (PublicAffairs Books, 2015), and Your Money and Your Brain, on the neuroscience of investing. BRK Shareholders Panel (Part 2): "What's the best advice you received from Warren Buffett?"

14:05
He is also the co-founder of Value Investor Insight, an investment newsletter. He is the author of Your Money and Your Brain, on the neuroscience of investing (Simon & Schuster, 2007). Zweig is also the editor of the revised edition of Benjamin Graham’s The Intelligent Investor (HarperCollins, 2003), the classic text that Warren Buffett has described as “by far the best book about investing ever written.” Links: - http://www.jasonzweig.com/ - http://topics.wsj.com/person/Z/jason-zweig/1586 The Museum of American Finance is the nation’s only independent museum dedicated to preserving, exhibiting and teaching about American finance and financial history. Housed in an historic bank building on Wall Street, the Museum’s magnificent grand mezzanine banking hall provides an ideal setting for permanent exhibits on the financial markets, money, banking, entrepreneurship and Alexander Hamilton. The Museum is an independent, non-profit 501(c)(3) Smithsonian affiliate creating non-ideological presentations and programs for purposes of education and general public awareness. Financial education is at the core of the Museum’s mission, seeking to promote lifelong learning and inquiry. As a chronicler of American financial achievement and development, the Museum seeks to play a special role as a guardian of America’s collective financial memory, as well as a presenter and interpreter of current financial issues, thereby connecting the past with the present while serving as a guide for the future.
