The Kalaidzhi bride market takes place in the southeast of Bulgaria every year. Unmarried women are often paired off with financially strong men.
But more and more young Roma are rebelling against the old tradition. For young Kalaidzhi the annual bride market at Bachkovo Monastery is the only chance to find a partner. Their Orthodox Christian faith and traditional code of conduct prohibit them from dating, flirting or having any other pre-marital relations. The Kalaidzhi - a name meaning tinsmiths or boilermakers - marry only within the group. Finding a spouse from outside - and in particular a non-Roma Bulgarian - is out of the question. Love is only a secondary consideration. What matters is the dowry. A growing number of young Roma, however, are rebelling against the traditional marriage market. They want to make their own decisions, and to love and marry the person of their choice. For girls especially - some as young as 15 when they are put up for marriage - the wedding is the end of self-determined life. They will subsequently be housewives and mothers. The film accompanies 17-year-old Teni and 19-year-old Maria in the week before the market day. For them it means buying a lot of new clothes and masses of other preparations. Can this be a way to find true love? And how is the outdated ritual affected by the Internet and social media?

interessting if people like this say they will only marry other people from their same clan (culture, race or what ever you want to call it- because it is essentialy the same) it is tradition or culture...but if a white person would say it (or lets rather say a german, french, white american and so on) it would be racism..oh man i love these double standarts
So weird that the girls try to look lighter skinned because it’s more beautiful, yet me a pale girl over here in America wishes I had her complexion. We always want what we can’t have. This was a really interesting vid tho, we srsly are so lucky
how backward culture. no shit these eastern european countries are backwater compared to the western ones. it seems like the eastern are more related to how women gets treated in asian and middle east then the western part of europe
the outraged comments- especially those by bulgarians- are ridiculous. what's so terrible in trying to preserve a unique identity and cultural heritage and where is the great harm done to these girls? would it be better if they started using tinder at 16 or hanging out in shady clubs waiting to be picked up?
also, is the western "liberal", "normal" way of dating and marriage is so successful that you scoff? what's the latest divorce percentage in bulgaria? 30%, 40%?
Too bad that Bulgaria has enough rednecks to interfere with the bride market day.Charles Chaplin was of Roma heritage and his Mother and siblings are on the role for the poorhouse in England briefly as a child. Considering that at the heights of his career he was the highest paid person in the USA maybe not all immigrants/minorities are what the "Dotard" would want us to believe.
Historically, Bulgarians have been very tolerant, accommodating
and supportive to the gypsies living in their country. During the socialist era
they were given FREE apartments in order to “assimilate” with the Bulgarian society.
Unfortunately, most of the gypsies are uneducated and not motivated to break
the cycle of poverty. They are one of
the most challenging problems Bulgaria face today morally, financially and culturally.
wtf is this?:( ok ppl ho arent bulgarians tell me?:D how do you love this rome ppl? case they dont give us reasons to love them:D they give us like 1 reason to love them for that reason they give us also 100 reasons for us to hate them.:( if you lived with them like us i dont know if anyone else can put up with the killing raping massive stealing and destroying my country slowly(PS with the help of the corrupt politics of course:D).:(
I'm from Turkey and I'm quite surprised with the fact that the name "Kalaidzhi" is Turkish. "Kalay" means tin, and the suffix "-cı/-ci/-cu/-cü" makes it an occupation. Like "futbolcu" means "footballer" in Turkish, "kalaycı" means "tinsmith", and the voiceover pronounces it exactly same way with "kalaycı" in Turkish. The more surprising thing is, here in Turkey, "kalaycı" used to be one of the primary occupations of Roma people back in the day when people used copper kitchen utensils - exactly in the same way with Roman Super Mario guy narrates in the video what he did for living.
I searched Kalaidzhis' affiliation with Turkish people online but couldn't come up with any results. Do you know about their background, history, religion, etc?
They are nomads originated from northern India and they travelled through the old silk route to reach Turkey and spread all over Europe. You are right, may be they were named in the Ottoman reign in Turkey. Back then Turkey was rich and traders and people like this were drawn to Istambul.
Sad, colour hierarchy even in this culture @19.57
Establishment & cultural fear of melanin.
Ok, plain English.
Didn't mind the story concerning lower caste white people, parental pimping, backward culture, unattractive hippies
But the tradition of a vampirish concubine to become attractive with the irony of gypsies evolving from India.... guess they can fuck right off too.
They are resilient in their culture and that's commendable. Many will say it's old, outdated, and orthodox.... but overall I didn't see anyone unhappy, man or woman. In many ways it keeps families safe. Look at the lady married to "Mario". She seemed as happy and confident as any woman who's married for 30 years. Men and women both get both satisfaction and happiness through culture. How many people do YOU know that are miserable on their own free will? Culture exists because people as a whole have little idea of what they want in life.
Its so funny. These people have strict ceremony's in which they all feel good about, than you have western people without culture and ceremony's bashing them for being closed minded and backwards. This is a way of life, just like the way of life in western countries is being slave to the system and working your ass off in a job that you hate, coming home to a nagging wife with a low paycheck. These people are living in the moment and are seriously happy in their lives and have structure etc etc. Hardcore capitalist countries on the other hand are chaotic from within but held together with police state.
This is basically speed dating in their own culture. You meet and flirt with someone, if you fall for one another you take it further. I guess eventually marriage, with a dowery. Let them practice what they want to, I just wish the women were able to work more.
Tradition to some simply means "Do what your parents tell you to do because you don't want to embarrass the family name."
I can't understand it most times. Tradition can be so important in some countries where your life is really not your own.
