ahmad syakirin the location is perfect, yes. But u need a lot of pre-existing and revolutionary commercial ideas to make the factor works. No one can deny the ability and visions of Singaporean government. They made miracles. As Malaysians , we r not doing bad ourselves but we need a lot improvements and to curb corruptions. We have a lot of resources and geographical advantages to even make ourselves a first world country, but we still haven't get there yet....

ahmad syakirin It is not pure luck, Malacca was once the busier port along the straits of Malacca.

It's just an independent state/island from mainland Malaysia. Just like Hong Kong and Taiwan. the difference tho, you need a passport to cross the sea in Singapore.

I'm all in favor of attracting foreign investors. However, attracting foreign investors is not an ends but a means. Lee Kuan Yew attracted foreign investors so as to raise money to build up Singapore's infrastructure. At this point, it is doing very well. If Singaporeans don't want the government to continue in their tracks, the government should listen. Life is not all about economic (monetary) issues, yet that is exactly what they are doing. Piyush Gupta said Singaporeans are going through a crisis of identity. He believes Singaporeans should embrace the identity of Singapore as a global city. This is a problem that he can't seem to see. Singaporeans (as far as I know) are very content with what they have achieved and wish for the government to focus on the general welfare of the people and not so much on increasing the GDP to tremendous levels. That is not a crisis of identity. The problem Piyush Gupta has is that Singaporeans don't agree with his view and not a crisis of identity (maybe there is a crisis of identity on other issues, but not on this one).

Singapore has no other strengths than serving as a shipping port and a stable tax haven for international finance. As long as they remain politically stable and the shipping lanes don't change, Singapore will stay wealthy. Imo, one alternative that could further long term economic stability is investing in gambling, become the Monaco/Macao of South East Asia.

To all: If so inclined, you may like to copy-&-paste these phrase into an internet search bar & see what you find: 1) " eduardo luiz p. saverin bentley disproportionately male plummeting birth rates " 2) " pianist melvyn 陳萬榮 admiral 張志賢 Louis Missouri ".

+Jeremy WCK I mentioned finance. It's due to the low taxation + stability combo enforced by the dictatorial regime. I think Singapore is at 17% direct tax while London is at 40%. Basically, poor people living there are fucked unless they're gifted or lucky enough to win in a cut-throat meritocracy.

Singapore has no other strength than a shipping hub? Please note, among other strengths, Singapore edged past Hong Kong as the world’s No. 3 financial center, according to a survey by London-based research firm Z/Yen Group. The Southeast Asian city-state ranks behind London and New York, and two points ahead of Hong Kong on the Global Financial Centres Index, published April 6 on the firm’s website. The index, which has a scale of 1,000 points, is based on surveys of 2,520 financial-services professionals, according to the press release. The ranking reflects key competitive areas including business environment, financial sector development and infrastructure of the 86 hubs around the world covered by the survey.

What Lee Kuan Yew did worked, as the saying goes "If it ain't broke don't fix it"
Mark Dignam (2 years ago)
+Law19157 That really is a naïve comment.  It's like saying don't maintain your building until it falls down.   The economy of the world is constantly changing.  The challenge in this clip is for the govt to balance positioning Singapore as a global centre for capital movements and corporate operations, with the needs of the average people.
