Easy DIY Spawning Mops

2556 ratings | 302881 views
HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN SPAWNING MOPS: 1. Buy some acrylic yarn. You can choose any color you'd like, but keep in mind two things. First, eggs will be much easier to see on darker yarn; and second, some people find that fish spawn more readily on green colored yarn. For this project, you will also need scissors, tape, cork bottle stoppers, and a hardcover book that is about as tall as the tank you're going to use the spawning mops in. 2. Cut off a length of yarn and lay it horizontally across the book, near the top. Use a couple pieces of tape to hold it in place while you work. 3. Begin winding the yarn vertically around the book. Go around about 100 times. You can do fewer or more times depending on how thick you want your mop to be. 4. Using the piece of yarn that was laid horizontally across the book, tie a knot at the top. 5. Then take your scissors and cut the yarn at the bottom of the book. 6. Take a cork, place it in the middle of your mop, and fold the mop in half to completely cover the cork. Then, while holding the top tight with one hand, tie a length of yarn around it to keep the cork held securely in place. 7. Boil some water in a large pot. Once it has reached a rolling boil, remove it from heat and soak your spawning mop in the hot water for about 15 minutes. Then rinse it off in cool water, and it's ready to use! Does anyone else have issues with the tips of mop sinking? My mop wants to float on the surface in a big mat.

Might still have air trapped in the strands.....take it in your hand in the tank and squeeze it a few times that should work

It's so helpful

Thank you. I am going to try this. I did not know that my Goldfish were having babies but now I see the eggs they are laying and no plants to lay in. However, maybe if I cannot get to this in time, it is a good thing? Cuz tons of Goldfish need homes.

Can't we use wool instead of acrylic yarn
Button Eyes (11 months ago)
Im gonna go grab me a bottle of wine since I don't have a cork 🤗
M.J. Winters (11 months ago)
When tying the cork in, I would just use a zip tie. They survive the boiling for sterilization just fine, and it's a LOT easier than tying a knot.
James Clemmons (1 year ago)
could you use this in a betta tank to give them a place to hide? thanks

Can I do this for a betta for decor or entertainment? Plz help someone!
Nathaniel Shriver (1 year ago)
Gorgeous Bettas You could do it, but betta's make bubble nests so it would be for your own enjoyment rather than the fish's...
Orca (1 year ago)
Sure you could use this for any fish. If you don't want to breed there's not much of a purpose for it.
Ilias Vanhove (1 year ago)

I have a question on breeding Goldfish. What temperature are they ok with when it comes to breeding. Temp gets like 86 to 88 here sometimes, will they be ok anf if so will the breed at that temp?
Michael (1 year ago)
maybe a rubber band around the top/cork would be easier? :P
Davide Domingos (1 year ago)
they may work but given enough time on water they get hard and break easy
Jack Marriott (1 year ago)
Rubber bands aren’t poisonous for fish
Michael (1 year ago)
Good to know. Wasn't sure what might happen to it inside the tank.

I have comet goldfish. Can you tell the sex of them the same way you tell butterfly goldfish? Also do you know how to tell hoe old a comet is so I can know when they are mature
Razwan Riaz (1 year ago)
I have the same question. I am finding answer from amount for Oranda goldfish and comet goldfish lol. But didn't get the right answer
Jayknee Garner (2 years ago)
I may be able to help you. It took me a while to figure mine out but I finally figured them out! Females will have a more rounded appearance while males are slimmer. During the breeding season the males will develop a bunch of white bumps on their pectoral fins. It almost feels like course sandpaper. The bigger they get the easier it is to tell the difference. Mine are for the most part used to being hand caught as it does less damage to their fins than netting them does. My fish are in the 8"- 12+ range and are 3years and 10 years old. Like I say it took me a long time to figure it out but I also wasn't all that conserved about genders!
Carly Lizards (2 years ago)
Simply Angela OK thanks. I'm thinking of asking breeders online. I have 3 comets.
justahappyfish (2 years ago)

We have an aquarium that is about 60 gallons, and there is no way there is a notebook big enough to accommodate the height of the the aquarium. Is there any substitute I can use for a notebook, or since it is a fairly large tank the size of the notebook does not matter? Thank you for all your help, this was a GREAT video!
lewk s (3 years ago)
I don't think the size matters because the fish will be the same size still
Mr. Ray (3 years ago)
Cut a piece of cardboard the size of your tank.

I put one in my tank for guppy fry to hide in. I made mine from cotton string. I might try putting one with a weight in it so it looks more plant like and provides a hiding place near the bottom.
Sani Kam (3 years ago)
this is great idea. I did same thing with a raffia string, only I planted it as an underwater plant, waving and all

do u put the mop in the parents tank and than move into seprate tank or opposite?
Amy Huang (4 years ago)
My female goldfish just had eggs n i was totally unprepared. My goldfish was in a separate (hospital) tank from the male at that time when i saw eggs. I also massaged the stomach near the anal very gently. Then i noticed that after the goldfish was done laying eggs, the tips of the fins near the anal and the scales around the anal has a little bit specks of black on it. Is that normal? I'm scared the fish will die or have problems later on. I had another fish that laid eggs and i think within a 1-3 months it died. That fish floated to the top of the tank, had trouble swimming, wouldn't eat, and was bloated. Do female goldfish die a few months after laying eggs?
Naked Aquarist (4 years ago)
Will these spawning mops work for any type of breeding fish? I have some Bolivian Rams, Danios? Thank you.
